The MP series coilovers offer the most features and the best quality for under $1350. HSD Coilovers use a Monotube damper design favoured by high end suspension companies and each kit is TUV approved. This level of quality and performance is usually found on much more expensive suspension products.

HIGH QUALITY MONOTUBE DAMPERS Cheaper aftermarket dampers use a twin-tube design with low pressure gas whereas our Monotube damper design uses large diameter pistons and a much higher gas pressure to better stabilise the oil within, even under extreme and prolonged use.

ISSUE PREVIEW

FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE EVERYTHING… Few things knock our socks off like a beautiful car, or intricate workmanship. With our second annual Style Book, we truly couldn’t be more excited to share with you the stories within these pages. Almost surely, the reason you’ve got this book in your hands has something to do with the immaculate cover. It’s a rare sight – and even rarer on a cover – to find an RWB Porsche flying down the backlit streets, but Akira Nakai’s latest creation, aka “Tiffany,” has travelled all the way from Hong Kong right into your hands – in glorious form – thanks to the stunning work of photographer Linus Lam. Keeping with that exclusive theme, we’re venturing into futuristic territory with a brand-spanking new project lead by Ben Schaffer, Unplugged Performance and its new performance and aero line for the Tesla Model S. You might recognize his name as one of the leaders in all things JDM and tuning with Bulletproof Automotive and, now, he’s set to attack the latest trend in the growing EV market. Our love for petrol and ear-shattering exhausts will never die,

but this is a market that’s not going away anytime soon, and hey – the Model S is a looker, especially in front of Phillip Awad’s lens. Someone had to build it, and we’re just happy we could show it to you here. What’s a Style Book without a highlight on the latest suspension and wide body trends and some of the hottest wheel builders around? Inside, we dive into the evolution of air suspension and what makes a body kit install a proper one. Too many people cut corners without even knowing it so, here, we answer all of your questions. After that we go inside Brixton Forged and the process behind its flawless, completely bespoke wheels. We also have an exclusive interview with CEC Wheels President and CEO Claus Ettensberger, who is celebrating the company’s Euro tuner roots and its 25th anniversary as one of the best. We really spit and polished this issue. For our Buyers Guides, we spared no expense in hunting down the most soughtafter parts and accessories to build your

STYLE.2

ride exactly how you want. From pages and pages of wheels to body kits, suspension components, lighting, interior and exterior accessories, it’s literally all here. Just know that we’re giving your wallet ample warning. The experts at Chemical Guys follow that up with a “how-to” for getting that showroom shine. Want your paint to sparkle diamond clear? Want your wheels to pop in the sunset? We’re sure you’ll find a few tips worth your while (we did), and it’s all in time for the summer show season! It’s so close we can almost feel our sunburns. So dive in, get stoked, learn something new and get inspired. Feel free to drop us a line if you’d like at letters@pasmag.com. We’re more than happy to bring you this second offering of our Style Book and, as always, thanks for picking us up.

TURBOFAN (GIRLING)

Photography by George Webster & Terence Gamble Despite their influence on style, it’s difficult to pinpoint exact trends when it comes to wheel design. Wait. Right. Spinners. Those were...ummm...great. Aside from those masterpieces, we’ve seen a steady stream of (insert number here) spoked wheel styles, but it seems two trends have been taking over of late. Throughout the community, we’re seeing directional wheels stake their claim as a stylish and functional pair of shoes, but it also seems we’re seeing a resurgence of a motorsport-inspired trend throughout the Euro community. And we’d like to welcome the return of the turbofan. Technically, it’s not a wheel (the original fans fit over top of certain wheels only) and original turbofans are hard to come by, but brands like fifteen52 (EVO SC shown,

right), Rota and Livery are incorporating side-cut designs into their wheels, or making new fans altogether. To the untaught, they leave people scratching their heads, but tell us about a better wheel/accessory that is equal parts form and function and you’ll earn some wicked bragging rights. Turbofans look awesome, they’re like nothing else, and they’re constantly cooling your brakes with wicked forces of air that would otherwise flow right passed the wheel. BMW? Audi? Porsche? V-dub? They were highly popular in the ‘80s across Germany and Europe, and if you have an older model Euro, they’ll look even more at home. And they’ll get you plenty of props in the process. Have a set of your own? Send us pics at letters@pasmag.com! - JL GET THE FULL PICTURE

GET IT FROM THE SOURCE It’s no secret that you get what you pay for. A little extra dough on any part for your car will help you out in the long run. With the introduction of wide body kits that are more technical than ever, the fact is that a little extra cash and a trustworthy source will keep you from looking like a fool. GReddy is one of those trustworthy sources. You probably know that they deal exclusively in Rocket Bunny

kits, but did you know that they’re the cream of the crop? The only RB kits they sell are ones directly from Kei Miura. Why are the Japanese kits the best? Top quality construction and fitment that only precision manufacturing can provide. Every TRA Kyoto-designed wide body goes through some pretty futuristic tech to make it onto your car. It begins with a full vehicle

laser-scan. This creates a detailed 3D digital rendering of the vehicle. From there, the CG rendering is then revised and refined until it meets Mr. Miura's exacting standards. After having its negative carved out via CNC mill to build symmetrical master molds(!), the end result is a superior fitting FRP aero kit. So, don’t look like a fool. Get it right and get it from the source. - MS

DIGITAL DREAMER

My goodness. If only these cars were real. Impressive, yes. But what’s even more so is that the virtual Picasso behind these images, concept artist Khyzyl Saleem, is only 21 years old. That’s right, he just turned legal drinking age, he’s teaching his elders a few things in this new age of digital design. And he’s only been doing it for four years. He dove into Photoshop at just 17 and began experimenting with images and tools, and today, his photomashes and digital paintings are among the most creative and progressive in the world of digital automotive renders. The Manchester, U.K. has been trending everywhere, most recently because of a design collaboration with Liberty Walk that saw an LED-laden BMW M3 take center stage during a Top Gear Live event. "Those cars I designed for Top Gear Live are quite a personal achievement for me," he said on his @the_kyza Instagram account. "Seeing something you’ve helped create in the flesh is an amazing feeling." Today, he’s offering his skills professionally to a growing number of automotive projects, but his main gig is with The Design & Print Co., which deals with everything from brand marketing to design and multimedia campaigns. So, which automaker is going to be the first to snatch him up? We can’t wait to see those cars… - JL

If there’s one thing that’s become bigger than wide bodies and air suspension this year, it’s big wings. And what else is there to do when the show scene becomes saturated with the same thing? You differentiate yourself. Here come the memes. Enthusiasts are plastering decals on the underside of their wings, each with their own motto, charm, or attitude. Such classics include JJ Dubec’s "#WhatsNext" Or Killagram’s "#FINANCIALMISTAKE." Other popular choices are "#DATBOOTYTHO," "Twerk It Miley" and other ass-associated jokes. Memes on memes, jokes on jokes, wings on wings. This is a trend we’d love to see become even bigger in the coming year, so do us a favor and keep up the good work. Do you rep a wing sticker? Do you plan on it? Send us some pictures of what you have, or what you’re going to stick to your booty at letters@pasmag.com. - MS

SENPAI NOTICED ME

Photography by Kevin Choi Renders by Raymond Leung and EJ McCauley People are driving around with anime characters on their cars. Some are fairly conservative and feature Pokémon or a main character in an action pose, while others are full-on panty shots of school girls. Straight class, guys. Straight class. Anyway, as you shake your head in astonishment or disgust, know that the name for this is "itasha." The word itasha is a union of "itai" or "ouch" and "sha," the Japanese word for car. It literally means "ouch-car" or "painful-car," depending on who you ask. The Japanese also refer to them as "painfully embarrassing" and "painful on the wallet" because all that vinyl isn’t cheap. That’s the awesome thing about itasha, though. It’s seen as embarrassing and the owners of the cars love it. Someone points and laughs and the driver just rolls with it. For them, it’s the ultimate showing of their two loves: anime and cars. Of course, it has spread like wildfire and JDM enthusiasts are embracing it. Darren Balico, of SNTRL, is one such enthusiast. His Nissan S14 has already had a couple iterations, with another in the works. All of them have featured anime babes and manga bombs with vinyl and decals galore. A team out of Chicago called the "4 Star Itasha Crew" has also hopped on the otaku train and will debut some designs at Tuner Galleria in 2015. You should be on the lookout yourself. Just notice them, senpai. - MS FILL 'ER UP

COMING OUT OF

RETIREMENT

There’s no denying that the Weds Kranze ERM still has status demand these days. Old and tired ERMs are being restored and sold for a pretty penny, and they’re snatched up quickly when a "for sale" ad shows up in the classifieds. Well, Weds Wheels North America took notice and bugged their HQ in Japan so much that the original designer of the ERM, Sugimoto, was like, "Fine! Jeez…" New for 2015, we finally get the Maverick 709M. So, what’s new? The Maverick is a two-piece, has reinforced gussets between the wheel spokes and is forged from even better material. Also, as Kranze is now synonymous with the luxury scene, it didn’t make sense to launch the sport-inspired wheel into the VIP niche. Maverick picks up where Kranze left off as Weds’ new sport design wheel division. Could we see other manufacturers follow Weds’ lead and re-launch some old favorites? What would you like to see? Get at us at letters@pasmag.com. The 709M is available in 18- to 20-inch sizes with a step-lip option and most fivebolt patterns. Go get yourself some new Japanese retro-mesh! - MS

REINVENTING THE WHEEL Interview with CEC Wheels CEO, Claus Ettensberger By Jordan Lenssen // Photography by Shaun Keenan & CEC Wheels

A

mong the automotive aftermarket elite, CEC Wheels is celebrating 25 years of German performance, art and engineering. Rooted in the dawn of the German tuning scene, CEO Claus Ettensberger has taken his experience competing and building alongside the pre-Mercedes-Benz tuner AMG with Lorinser, and put that directly into his products today. That rich tradition, born in Stuttgart, Germany, has led to some of the most recognizable, timeless designs that have often been imitated, but never duplicated. Designing each wheel from the ground up, CEC’s 25th anniversary, “Made in Germany” collection highlights some of the most unique manufacturing processes, materials and artistic creations to ever leave Ettensberger’s office. We were lucky enough to catch up with the tuning maestro and dive into his inspirations, techniques and insights into one of automotive’s most fashionable style items...

PASMAG: What inspired you to get into the tuning scene? Claus Ettensberger:

I came to this country in 1987. I used to work at Lorinser, the Mercedes tuner. There were basically two [tuners] in Stuttgart, Germany; one was AMG and the other was Lorinser. There was no other Mercedes-Benz tuner in the world besides those two companies. AMG got bought out by Mercedes-Benz and is now part of the company. So I came here in ’87 and was scouted by an American entrepreneur who used to do AMG in the states before it became AMG U.S. After he lost AMG, he came to us at Lorinser and wanted us to bring the

company to the States. So I came with them – I wanted to stay with them for two years – and I enjoyed the work environment, the ethics and the way of life in the United States. I decided to leave the company and form my own in 1990, with the blessing of Lorinser at the time. What ideologies drive the brand and the company?

Basically, in 1990 I started CEC to represent the finest aftermarket and tuning companies from Germany. News spread quickly in Germany that I was here and doing a great job for Lorinser, so all of the other companies that were around at the time: AC Schnitzer, Remus Exhaust, AZEV Wheels

and Antera wheels – these companies knew of the success I had with CEC and importing fine European tuners, and they all basically wanted me to become their importer. So that’s how CEC was built. Every single high-end German or European tuning company wanted us to be their representative because of the German heritage that I have, and also because it was easy for them to speak to me because I spoke the same language. The ideology behind the products is that we always pursue perfection. All we do is high quality – top quality craftsmanship. We don’t take shortcuts. For us, I firmly believe that our products are not just show, they’re also go. Our

Interview with Claus Ettensberger

REINVENTING THE WHEEL

utmost priority is quality, safety and we never overprice. We’re not bling. Sometimes that hurts me for sure. Remember spinners? All of my dealers were telling me I had to get them, and I said, ‘There’s no way in the world that we’ll sell spinners.’ It’s much more important to me to have longevity, to have quality and a reputation. You cannot be everything to everybody. I’ve turned down 24-inch wheel requests for the ML, and 22 inches for the S Class at the time, and there was not one tire that was load-rated for the S-Class with 22 inches, so all we could do was 21 inch. A lot of customers had bent rims or blown tires and came back and said they should’ve listened to us in the first place. What makes your wheels so attractive to European vehicle designs?

Being from Germany, I basically design our wheels, together with our team, around European cars and, predominantly, MercedesBenz, Porsche, Audi and BMW. But I’m from Stuttgart, and Porsche and Mercedes blood runs through me day in and day out. I do love BMWs, don’t get me wrong, but when I design wheels I always have Mercedes-Benz in mind.

If you could design a set of wheels for any manufacturer, what company would it be?

Was there a turning point when you knew you wanted to work with cars?

How involved are you in the design and manufacturing process?

That would be Mercedes-Benz, for several reasons. I’m from Stuttgart, it’s my favorite car company. They also design cars that allow us to put wheels on it. MercedesBenz is actually endorsing it to an extent. They don’t mind, as long as the product is proper and fits right, if you take of a factory wheel and put on a CEC wheel for that matter. As long as it’s safe and not over the top and ‘bling, bling.’ They’re the only company that doesn’t cause you to lose your warranty if you put a set of aftermarket wheels on your vehicle.

I wanted to do two things: I either wanted to be a soccer player, or I wanted to be in the car business. Those were a couple things that were my childhood dreams. And since I’m from Stuttgart and was surrounded from an early age by Mercedes-Benz and Porsche cars, I just grew fond of that. To top it all, when I was a little kid, one of my neighbors used to be a marketing manager at Mercedes-Benz, and at that time there was no Internet or email, so marketing at that time was strictly catalogs, brochures, posters, pins, model cars and all that – that’s what they used as marketing material. That neighbor was so nice he literally brought home – every time they made something new from Mercedes-Benz, he brought one sample home and gave it to me. So I had Porsches and Mercedes around me my whole life. I wish I had them now! I got brainwashed, let’s put it that way!

I’m very involved in designing the wheels, actually. Rudy, who is in the office with me right now, is a wheel designer. So we come up with ideas. We look at current market trends, we design around cars and especially MercedesBenz, and we always strive to reinvent the wheel, which is very difficult. The wheel has to be round, we know that, but there’s only so much we can do when we want to make it lightweight, good looking on not just one car, but four car manufacturers. So I’m involved from the initial sketch all the way to the manufacturing process. I fly to our manufacturers. We don’t only make wheels in Germany, we make wheels in Asia as well. But our highlight wheels, the ones we introduced at SEMA: the C25, C26, C27 – the Anniversary Collection – those are made in Germany. But you can’t just sell $2,000+ wheels to everybody. There’s a demand for lower-priced, more mainstream wheels and designs, and we have factories in Asia that make them for us. Very good ones, I might say. One of them makes wheels for all the German tuners right now, and some of them are also making wheels for MercedesBenz right now. If you look at the new S Class – the S63, they have a forged wheel on that car. When you take it off and turn it

Rudy Ghaly (CEC Wheel Designer): You’ll see that on

the dealership floor. Once you go there you’ll see wheel displays all over the dealership floor, and even here in the United States. You won’t see that at BMW or Audi – they only promote their performance brands.

“You have the most freedom when you design a three-piece wheel. You can vary the inners, the outers, the lips with a step or flat. But it’s also an expensive process…”

around it says ‘Made in Taiwan’ on the back, which I would have never thought. But they’re making better parts in Asia now than some manufacturers in Europe because they amortize. In China or Taiwan or Thailand, there is so much freedom and growth that they just go to Europe, buy German machines – which are the best machines to make wheels with, and they have the facilities with much newer manufacturing processes then they have in Europe in many cases. What construction style gives you the most freedom in design?

You have the most freedom when you design a three-piece wheel. You can vary the inners, the outers, the lips with a step or flat. But it’s also an expensive process and it’s a little bit tricky because three-piece wheels can leak if they’re not put together properly. So my favorite design is a monoblock design or my new two-piece design, which has a special manufacturing process where you take the entire front of the wheel as one piece (dish and face), and the rear as the second piece. Usually a two-piece has a barrel and the center that fits in, so we came up with a new manufacturing process and it works very well. But I have to say monoblock is the easiest wheel to make that is solid and strong, with no leaking whatsoever.

REINVENTING THE WHEEL

Do you see any current trends taking the market?

A current wheel trend for us, and for most of the wheel manufacturers, is a directional wheel design. A true directional one, meaning the left rotation is different than the right rotation. If you want a set of wheels for a [front/rear offset, like a] Ferrari 458, we are essentially making you four different wheel designs: the two front ones – one left, which propels to the front on the left side – and one right, which propels to the front on the right side, then the same for the two rear wheels. That’s the trend that we are going toward right now. Let’s take the Mercedes SLR [and the turbine wheel], for example. The wheel on the left side was the same as the right side. So if you take the left wheel that has a rotation to the front and move it to the right, it has a rotation to the rear. We make it directional where they look and flow air the same. We are basically doubling up on inventory. But that’s what I want to do. I want to be special. If I make a directional wheel, it has to be directional. I think, that is going to take over the market for the next three or four years. And we are a trend setter because we were one of the first ones to have it in our C26 collection, made in Germany.

Are there any fashion designers who influence your products?

Not so much. You know who influences me in design? Frank Stephenson (Lead Design Director at McLaren). I went to his factory in Woking and he gave me the royal tour and told me that he designs a lot with nature in mind: flowing with animals, organic, panthers jumping, whales in the ocean and how smooth they move. That actually helped me a little bit to come up with the directional wheel design. And Henrik Fisker (of Fisker Automotive) too; he’s a close friend as well. These guys influence me more than Giorgio Armani and Hugo Boss, because they are in my field. But it is always good to learn from people who are smarter and brighter and have achieved more than you. What is the biggest change you’ve seen since starting in the industry?

The biggest change is that the manufacturers nowadays are jumping on the bandwagon and cutting into our [aftermarket] cake. Like the S63 I just mentioned, to most consumers this car is good the way it comes from the factory – there is very little you can do to it [to make it better]. So the basic consumer says, “I want to get a Mercedes and I want to have a customized Mercedes, so I am going to get an AMG,” which is an S63. Most people will not customize their car any further. In

the old days you had to get a basic Mercedes and bring it to CEC to make it look different or customize it. Nowadays the trend has changed. The number one competitor is now the OEM factory. You can buy a carbon fiber spoiler for a 3 Series or 5 Series for $699. It’s probably not made in Germany anymore, but that doesn’t matter, it’s a great quality product and tuners, like AC Schnitzer can never compete with them. If you buy a Schnitzer spoiler right now, it’s probably $1,900, because they don’t make them in the same quantity like a BMW factory would make it. So the industry has changed tremendously. The only things that you can still sell for these high-end cars are custom wheels, because wheels are fashion, like shoes – easy to change. They are like shoes for ladies; when you put them in stilettos they look great, and they have lots of them. The same goes with wheels. Wheels are an easy customizing item and it is also easy to change them back to stock. Any closing comments?

All I can say is that my job is probably one of the best jobs there is because I turned my hobby into a business and I wouldn’t want to do anything else. I love to be in the car business, I love cars and I hope I can do another 25 years in this business before I retire. We hope so, too.

Knock, knock. The future is here. By Micky Slinger // Photography by Phillip Awad

I

t seems like every year there is a promise of some insane automotive future. Some seemingly well-off and well-adjusted individual promises a flying car, which is pretty much a smart car with some folded wings bolted to it, paired with a good Photoshop job of it flying high in the clouds. They take money from Kickstarters or investors, make up delays, and then fade into the night like a ninja trained in scamjutsu. What most people don’t realize is that the future is already here, and it’s made by a South African entrepreneur who also builds rockets and has a name that sounds like designer cologne. Elon Musk brought us the Tesla Model S in 2012 and the improvement train (or should I say Hyperloop) hasn’t put on the brakes. The Model S, as of 2015,

has become a full-fledged performance car with the introduction of its almost 700-horse P85D variant. Dual electric motors, rear-wheel-drive, a transmission that never has to shift and instant throttle response - all without the need for gas - have naysayers blushing. However, as some owners have noted while cruising around in their luxury spaceships, the car often gets confused for other large, four-door, upscale sedans. The Jaguar XF and BMW 5 Series are the usual suspects. As a neighbor to both the Tesla Design Studio and a Supercharger station in Hawthorne, California, Ben Schaffer of Bulletproof Automotive has been taking notes. Tesla is big, but it’s getting bigger, and with all of its energies focused on keeping up with demand, surprisingly, nobody has looked

at making aftermarket improvements to the Model S. Mercedes has AMG, so why shouldn’t Tesla have something similar? In 2014, the doors to Unplugged Performance were opened right across the business park from Tesla's Design Studio, who actually gave Schaffer and his crew the goahead to work over the cars they design. “We’re friends with some of the guys there and they gave us a lot of encouragement to start the Unplugged brand,” Schaffer says. “In fact, we started it with their blessing. An important part of us deciding it was the right opportunity was having the manufacturer’s support.” The reason that no one has really tackled a Tesla project until now is the connotation that the Model S can’t be tinkered with. They said the same about the GT-R (R35) back in 2007, but look how that turned out. Schaffer, having much experience in modifying upscale vehicles that

“can’t be tuned,” moved forward with that mindset. And after many concepts and variations, the Unplugged Performance P85+ Model S you see here emerged from the shop. Now, this isn’t just some slapa-widebody-and-wing-on-it-andsay-“Tada!” venture. Unplugged went above and beyond to match the quality and craftsmanship that goes into cars that share the same price tag. To give you an idea, one of their first hires was an ex-Ferrari F1 composite specialist. Each part they developed needed to have zero negative effects on the efficiency of the Tesla. There had to be no downside. “There are so many factors that go into play to make a part that makes sense,” Schaffer explains. “Most of the parts out there are a tradeoff – you trade one thing for something else. You trade looks for ground clearance, or you trade a wide body for efficiency, or you trade power for a noisy exhaust

that pisses off the neighbors. It’s very hard to tune a car where it’s all upside and no downside.” It’s not surprising then that the skirts, diffuser and spoiler on the car all have little to no effect on the OEM aerodynamics of the car. The Model S left the factory with very little drag for increased efficiency, so the last thing Unplugged would want is to strand you in the middle of a road trip because they developed parts that steal power and aren’t aero efficient. While tinkering with the Model S was getting thumbs up from Tesla, Unplugged’s work also caught the eye of aftermarket wheel powerhouse BBS. Working in tandem on the design and manufacturing, the 21-inch beauties that take up residence on all corners came to fruition. These BBSs are tailormade for the Model S. If you tried to put them on something else, it just wouldn’t ride right. Schaffer says it was a no-brainer going into business with BBS. “BBS is excited about what we were doing,” he says. “From our side, anything that we don’t make with our own hands, we only want to bring in partners that we think fit the long-term image for the brand. BBS is the kind of brand you want for wheels.” There is just no

compromise when it came to putting together this upscale plug-in. You won’t find coilovers or an air system under the wheel arches. Instead, you’ll find the factory units paired with a kit that Unplugged offers to dial in the ride height according to the owner’s preference. There’s already a selectable suspension system onboard the Tesla, Unplugged just toyed with it a bit to produce some tasteful low. Absolutely everything is designed and manufactured inhouse. Aero bits? Check. Interior carbon fiber pieces coated in the same BASF clear coat used on the Tesla? You got it. Upholstery made from Rolls-Royce carpeting, Lamborghini Alcantara and Ferrari leather? All custom-stitched and made to order. Regular aftermarket just isn’t good enough for a car of this caliber. Even the headlights received a blackout treatment and were upgraded with improved projectors and lenses, which are etched with the Unplugged logo, but are invisible in the beam. None of this was easy or plug and play, however. The Model S is an advanced vehicle with complicated systems to match. Schaffer tells us that every part design had at least 20 iterations before a concrete product was good enough to

work with the systems and provide the same efficiency - the most difficult being the menacing, revised front fascia. “The front bumper was the most difficult project we’ve ever done, as far as aftermarket,” Schaffer recalls. “All of that new technology comes with some very challenging systems. We actually reused all of the factory components that give the car its function, which is extremely difficult to do.” The fog lights are a shining example of this. Even though they look aftermarket, they’re actually the stock units. Being flipped upside down and trading places from left to right, the daytime

running lights now have the same curvature as the new bumper, which looks awesome, and the hidden ducts that feed air to the cooling systems at speed retain their function. Yes, it would have been easier to go another route, but in the words of Schaffer, “When you buy a $120,000 high-end car, you want it to have the parts that you bought.” As of right now, there are no plans to squeeze a little extra juice out of the batteries that run down the middle of the car. Has Unplugged looked into it? Of course they have, but doing so would void the warranty. Do you really want to

lose your warranty when a replacement battery costs as much as a brand-new WRX STI? “At the end of the day, it’s all about passion,” says Schaffer. “We do things that we like and that we believe in, and after driving the Model S for the first time, we just knew that this was something special and needed to be treated as such.” The future isn’t a bunch of wishy-washy promises of winged cars. The future is already here. Right now, it’s being upgraded in Hawthorne, California at its parents’ neighbor’s house and it’s pretty special.

n the heart of Chiba, Japan lies a shop completely unbeknownst to the untold eye. Operating as the workplace, and often, sleeping quarters of RWB founder, Akira Nakai, its downtrodden exterior blends seamlessly with the environment around it. Hiding the automotive beauty and genius within, from the outside, it is a literal example of its owner's motto, "Rough World." The list of automotive legends is brief, but it's in this place that Nakai san developed a concept that would put him amongst some of the greatest builders that the world – let alone Japan – will ever see. The idea? It began more than 20 years ago, with Nakai as a core member and leader of "Rough World," a group of drifters and professional drivers who set out

to build the best, most radical Toyota AE86s and Mark IIs that side of the Pacific. The wide wheels, negative camber, low ride heights and propped hoods were unheard of at the time. To outsiders, they appeared to be nothing more than an attention grab, but their cars were all function. They were built rough, and they were driven rough. It wasn't long before Rough World wrote its name into Japanese automotive folklore just three years later with RWB and the Porsche 911. Renamed RAUH-Welt Begriff, or "Rough World Concept," look at the front splitter or rear wing of almost any RWB Porsche and you'll see "Zwiete (or Sekund) Entwicklung," denoting the "second development" of the Rough World. Nakai has taken each of the styles from the original Rough World builds –

“This is a car I’ve loved since I was a child. For me, I believe it is the ultimate – but simple – sports car.” - Akira Nakai shakotan (low ride height), onikyan (extreme camber), hippari tire (stretched tires) and tsuraichi (becoming one with the body) – and infused them into the 911 in a way that seems completely natural to the timeless German grand tourer. "This is a car I've loved since I was a child," Nakai tells PASMAG of his muse. "For me, I believe it is the ultimate – but simple – sports car." His first RWB and the company's flagship is "Stella Artois," a 1986 930 featuring a fully-built, naturally-aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six pushing 355 honest horsepower. Spec'd with RWB-specific components that include an Aragosta coilover kit, custom roll cage, titanium exhaust, custom SSR wheels, seats and of course, the signature RWB 930 aero kit, its coke-bottle shape – an extreme derivative of Porsche racers like the Group 4 Jägermeister 934, or 1976 Martini 935 – formed the basis for every RWB build to come.

"The Porsche is, in its origin, one of the most compact sports cars," Nakai says. "The widebody style is fitting because aside from the Porsche's size, there are design elements that aren't available from other cars." Long after its establishment in the Japan underground, RWB made its first appearance stateside at the 2011 SEMA Show in the form of the green (now black) "Pandora One" 964 Carrera 4, white "Hoonigan" 964 Turbo and grey, unmarked "Pandora Two" 993. Nakai's workmanship immediately led to a cult following, headlining social media channels, YouTube, auto shows, and the creation of 12 RWB locations worldwide. Aside from the authorized dealer locations, the entire RWB operation is run by Nakai, his painter Nojima Yusuke, and his business manager Ichiraku Toshiya. His latest work is what you see here. Appropriately named after the factory mint green paint reminiscent of Tiffany & Co., this 1990 Carrera 2 964, or "Tiffany," is the first project by RWB Hong Kong, a sub-arm of expert

vehicle consultants and builders, ReinART.Design, who oversee the RAUH-Welt brand and its operations at this 12th and newest shop. What differentiates RWB from other wide body manufactuers is that Nakai doesn't simply distribute prefab parts – he builds each car, conceptualizing and customizing each one entirely on his own. After carefully selecting the name and color (nowadays in collaboration with his clients), he determines the fitment and the vehicle's driving character based on his customer and their geographic location. Where eager clients were previously required

“Basically, I don’t measure. When I cut, I measure with feeling…”

RWB Quick Q&A with Akira Nakai What is the most difficult aspect of an RWB build? AN: The hardest part is working on a car from over 20 years ago in a country that I’ve never been to before. Do you prefer naturally aspirated or turbocharged engines? AN: NA has a direct feeling and I love it. My “Rotana” was my fi st turbo. I’m taking on the challenge of seeing how far I can go with the air-cooled Porsche RWB style, which I love.

to ship their 911s to his shop in Chiba, the 12 shops now act as a stomping ground for Nakai to execute his craft. An astute perfectionist, Nakai begins each project with the suspension. His partnership with Aragosta means a tailored, trackworthy Type S coilover setup that meets the requirements of street and track driving, with the stiffness needed to run low ride heights and the tuning ability to perfect his tsuraichi and customer-specific handling character of each car. After her suspension is set up, Nakai properly secures Tiffany's 964 kit front bumper, custom grilles and signature black rubber seals. Then he moves to the piece de resistance: the fenders. While each vehicle is a labor of love, it's here where Nakai has garnered his reputation, and where each Porsche becomes an RWB.

ONE L VE.

TUNING ESSENTIALS // 2015 STYLE BOOK // 2ND EDITION

Every cut into the body, every wide body fender, and each installation is done entirely by feel. Using just his eyes, his hands, and his experience, Nakai has given each of his 300-plus cars – and in this case, Tiffany – its unique character. "Basically, I don't measure," he says simply. "When I cut, I measure with feeling because there are differences in the tools I use, and even the air pressure for each country. There are also differences in climate, in road conditions, so where I fit a fender is also different. It's intuition – a gut feeling." He doesn't know exactly how wide his fender flares are, or how the wheels will fit immediately. When he's done installing the fenders, Nakai spray paints Tiffany's front lip and rear diffuser, mounts them, and tapes and caulks every exposed body seam. It's a series of massaging his work until it is absolutely perfect. That couldn't be more evident than the wheel installation and alignment. Typically, the wide fenders of an RWB build require wheel spacers for proper fitment.

OWNER: ReinART.Design BUILT BY: Akira Nakai (RAUH-Welt Begriff) LOCATION: Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong ENGINE: 3.6L flat-six cylinder HORSEPOWER: 236 HP TORQUE: 215 LB-FT

Wanting to match the special nature of Hong Kong's first RWB, ReinART.Design and Nakai contacted Cody Williston and Adam Majcherkiewicz from Brixton Forged to create a one-off set of 18-inch CM16 wheels that require no spacers, finished in Brixton's special colored gloss process, for a brushed rose gold barrel that complements the high-class, Tiffany & Co. theme. Aligning the wheels, Nakai pulls out a small rule and two small metal tubes, tapes each one to the ground beside the wheels on either side, then starts pulling on the steering wheel. After a few minor adjustments to the tie rods, he goes for a test drive and makes one minor adjustment on the side of the road in Kowloon Bay. Inside, the car is just as organic. No bells or whistles, it's not far evolved from its stripped form. After all, Nakai's creations are meant to be driven, and driven rough. To that end, ROTtec carbon SRS bucket seats, Schroth Racing Profi II harnesses, an RWB-badged Momo Porsche GT3 Cup steering wheel and Rennline fully adjustable aluminum pedals sit inside a custom four-point roll cage. time, the completely rebuilt 236-horsepower engine sings the flat-six song beautifully through an FVD set of headers and dual outlet sport exhausts. Like the AE86s and Mark IIs that came before, Nakai's cars might grab your attention with their radical style, but it's as much about great balance and performance. "There is no one part about the build that I like the most," he admits. "I'm much more about the balance of the entire thing." When it's all said and done, Nakai's latest masterpiece takes him just four days from his arrival at Hong Kong International and RWB Hong Kong. Soon after, he's jet-setting to his next canvas. "Right now, I don't think of myself as living in Japan. I live in the world. I'm not concerned whether it's a far country or a nearby country. I live with my RWB family around the world. I go to the airport every week with that in mind." "We only have one life. I believe this is a great experience and I don't want to put it to waste. That is why I will do this to the end." Like a true artist.

SHOW SEASON CAR CARE S

REFRESH YOUR RIDE WITH THE CHEMICAL GUYS

pring is just around the corner (we promise), and as much as we all need the sun and warmth, so do our prized possessions that we painfully put into storage in the fall. That's right, our rides. With spring and summer on their way, here are a few things that are a must to make up for lost time during winter. The best of your's and your ride's time could not be better spent any other way than cleaning, washing and being close with some amazing products. The gang at Chemical Guys Canada are the one-stop shop for all your spa day needs, so you and your car can get reacquainted. Let's walk you through the steps of using our products and methods: After removing your car cover, inspect your exterior for anything that may have settled on the paint and might cause scratching. Once you've made note, set up your garage or driveway for a wash. We use a two bucket wash system, with both buckets having clean water and grit guards. One bucket will have only clean water and other will have water and 2 oz. of our Citrus Wash and two Wash Mitts. You should start by giving your car a hose rinse to remove any dust or contaminates that may have settled over the winter during storage. Spray your wheel wells with Bare Bones to clean and protect the wheel liners and let it sit. Next, spray your rims with our wheel cleaner and let that sit as well. Then you will want to start washing; starting on the roof, then hood and trunk, always washing small sections and overlapping the locations about 25 percent so you don't miss any spots. When you're working your way down your ride, gently massaging your paint to help that shine get out, always remember to rinse your mitt in the clean water bucket to remove any dirt or contaminates before you go to the soap bucket to get more soap to wash. With your second mitt, wash your rims and wheel well edges. Now that you've fully washed your ride, let's rinse. Whether you use a garden hose or a pressure washer, use the same method for the best result.

Rinse your wheels, rims and tires before you rinse the paint, then start from the top, just like you did when you were washing. As well as rinsing top-down, keep your water stream at a 45-degree angle - this will not only help push soap and contaminates downward and off your car, but also get in all the edges and clean them as well. The next step is very important. When inspecting your paint, as the flow chart (left) will show you, always go by the feel of your paint. The best way to do this is by putting your hand in a plastic bag. If the paint is smooth, then you're good to move onto the next step applying a paint sealant or wax to refresh your paint. But what do you do if your paint feels rough? Start with a clay bar to remove contaminants from your paint. Always remember: never use your clay bar dry. Always use Chemical Guys Clay Bar Lube. Once this is done, you may need to compound and polish to completely recondition the paint. If you know how to do this step, great! If you would like to know how, we can teach you at our special University Detailing Class. Check it out at chemicalguyscanada.ca. At this point, your paint is in good condition and ready for our Jet Seal sealant. Then you're ready for wax. You can apply one of the many waxes we offer. and applied by hand or machine, we have the perfect wax for you and your ride. Next up is dressing your tires. Again, we have a few different tire dressings depending on the look you are going for, whether it is natural or a high-gloss shine. Just spray it on and wipe it off! Now that the outside is ready, let's touch up the interior. Here are a couple of different things you can do depending on the type of interior you have: Our Inner Clean spray is the best solution for cleaning all hard plastic surfaces; Nonsense Super Cleaner will take care of cloth and carpets; and one of the many leather cleaners and conditioners we carry will refresh your leather seats and get them ready for the warm sun. Using our amazing glass cleaner, finish each window, inside and out. Now, the last and final step: spray one of our amazing air fresheners. With just two sprays in each foot well, run your fan in recirculation mode to have your ride totally show ready! Make sure to check out our website chemicalguyscanada.ca and take a look at all of our amazing products, and watch our How-To YouTube videos for even more info. BODY ENGLISH

By Jordan Lenssen Photography by Phillip Awad, Linus Lam, Marcel Lech, Jordan Lenssen, ReinART.Design

THE MANY DOS (AND IMPORTANT DON'TS) OF BOLT-ON WIDE BODIES Wataru Kato, Kei Muira, Akira Nakai. They're the latest in a long line of popular body modiďŹ ers, and arguably the most successful when it comes to kits that draw crowds. With the help of social media and their almost-guaranteed show appearances, Liberty Walk, Rocket Bunny and RWB have brought the new era of wide bodies to the masses.

I

t's a stark difference to days passed, when tuners pulled and rolled metal or molded, sanded and painted fenders. While that is still the only option for many builders, bolt-ons have taken over as the quickest and easiest way to give a vehicle some literal flare. But just how quick and easy is it? It seems that while over fenders have gained immense popularity, they have also garnered as much (or more) criticism because of this

56

PASMAG

Wide Body Feature_V3.indd 1

misconception. While some may think it's a simple job, the work behind the current offering of wide bodies is anything but. There's a reason there are so few successful names across the globe, and why so many DIYers have failed. "There is a lot of work under the fenders that you don't normally see [in order] to do a proper job," Gerard de Peralta of SERIALNINE says. "It's completely welded and sealed as if it were a stock car."

"Being the nature of body panels, almost nothing out there is a perfect fit...This comes down to material science as well." Matthew Law, ML24

THE WIDE

BODY MOVEMENT

Attend just about any show and you'll likely see a rivet-heavy kit from one of the names above. They're rough, aggressive and make a bold statement with no apologies. Sure, there are plenty

of wide body designs that make use of entire fender replacements, like Do Luck, Prior Design and

Varis, but the trend has shown that exposed bolts are the rage. Nakai himself has built numerous molded RWB Porsches, but take a look at his recent builds and try to find one with a seamless wide body fender. The Jeopardy music just ended. As a result of their "too cool for school" looks, it seems numerous installers and enthusiasts have been duped into thinking the bolts simply mean "bolt on." True, the bolts are how they are secured, but that's just the beginning. The result is a shabby job that becomes a nighmare for some. There's nothing more disappointing than seeing a perfectly worthy car and kit sitting stagnant at a

show, with a crowd of people shaking their heads in dismay. "I see a lot of bad fitment," says de Peralta. "They just don't take the time to make sure the gap is perfect, or the parts are lined up. There is definitely a bit of a difference between a professional install and a home job." Each fender from each of the major players, whether it's FRP, carbon fiber, fiberglass or otherwise, goes through a strict design process to ensure proper fitment. "I like to study the form of the car. Each kit is unique to a specific car, so it works with the lines, the curves and the overall design," automotive designer and builder

z CUTTING

"...unless you are a trained and experienced builder, leave the body kit installs to a professional, well-known body shop. These "Dos and Don'ts" are by no means a manual, but knowledge is power, and having that extra little bit may help you (or someone you know) recognize and save an improper install." z KNOW YOUR MATERIAL All body kits are made up of some sort of flexible polymer, but knowing what a kit is made of might help you make a more informed decision before settling on a design.

• Understand your material. Is it ABS, FRP, fiberglass, carbon fiber? Can it even be repaired? Cost will likely be a factor in your kit decision-making, but so should repairs. Almost all body shops can repair fiberglass, and FRP/CFRP is fairly easy to fix, too. That's likely not the case with ABS, and materials like polyurethane can be susceptible to warping and paint adhesion issues.

DO

58

PASMAG

Wide Body Feature_V3.indd 2

Cutting a fender results in a significant loss of exterior metal around all of your fenders to ensure and maximize travel. It's a grotesque sight that looks like surgery gone wrong. Usually this means the under fender (that plastic/metal guard protecting your wheel well from water and dirt) gets cut as well, creating an open gap between the outer skin and the under fender.

• Cover everything you aren't working on first. Sparks and debris can easily imbed to paint and moldings, creating a lot of unplanned work and expense. • Fit your fenders temporarily. • Measure each corner to get the body as even as possible. Measure, eyeball, measure again, and yes, measure again. • Cut to maximize the travel of your suspension. • Use a plasma cutter (if available) for cleaner cuts.

DO

Matthew Law of ML24 tells us. For that reason, it's imperative to ensure proper placement to avoid gaps and spaces, between the existing body and over fender.

We'll make this brief and advise that, unless you are a trained and experienced builder, leave the body kit installs to a professional, wellknown body shop. These "Dos and Don'ts" are by no means a manual, but knowledge is power, and having that extra little bit may help you (or someone you know) recognize and save an improper install.

NEXTMOD's Tom Nguyen has a few don'ts:

• Do not put pressure

DON'T on cutting tools. "Just allow the tool to work its way through the metal. Applying too much pressure can bend or break a tool, and at such high RPMs, it can become extremely dangerous." • Pre-drill the over fender or body. Paint first and drill/install after. "The heat cycle from a paint booth can shrink or warp the panel slightly, so pre-drilled holes may not line up after," he says. • Over cut the inner or outer fender. It's easier to cut again then add on lost material. • Fill any openings with expanding foam. It is porous and absorbs moisture, eating the metal from the inside out.

Untitled-1 1

2015-03-12 2:56 PM

z SEALING / WELDING / PAINT FINISHING • Fill the gap around the wheel well and extend it to the new over fender. New sheet metal panels need to be cut and welded in to provide a factory-like inner fender, by extending it to match up to the bottom of the new over fender. • Etch prime the new inner fender (and any exposed bare metal), then weld, prime and paint. The new inner fender should create a flat surface from underneath the over fender into the wheel well. • Dress each new over fender with some form of weather stripping to close any gaps on the exterior of the vehicle. The result is a watertight install with protection from the exposed parts of the fender and into the wheel well.

DO

• Avoid sealing / welding

DON'T a single gap. You'll soon have a rust bucket. • Simply tack weld the outer fender shut. Instead, extend your inner fender to the new overfender - otherwise your fenders will be extremely noisy and exposed to the kicked up dirt and grime. There have also been horror stories of suspension travel maxing out at speed, only to have a driver stuck on the side of the road because the leading edge of their tackwelded fender literally sliced their tire in half.

BECAUSE OF THE INHERENT NOISE OF THE WIDER FENDERS (AND USUALLY WIDER, STICKIER TIRES), "WE MAKE ABS INNER FENDERS THAT FIT REALLY WELL AND ARE COATED WITH BED LINER, WHICH KEEPS IT A LITTLE QUIETER," DE PERALTA SAYS. "THE INNER FENDER HELPS BECAUSE IT DEFLECTS THE DEBRIS AS IF IT WERE A NORMAL CAR." TIP

"Each kit is unique to a specific car, so it works with the lines, the curves and the overall design," Law says. For that reason, it's imperative to ensure proper placement to avoid gaps and spaces... z FITTING "Being the nature of body panels, almost nothing out there is a perfect fit," Law says. "Everything out needs a certain degree of fitting in one way or another. This comes down to material science as well. Anything that's composite, fiberglass, carbon fiber or ABS plastic or polypropylene, these are polymers and they flex."

• Know your suspension travel and wheel fitment. • Know your geography. Does the kit allow enough ground clearance depending on your suspension and where it will be driven? These are all things to consider, especially depending on the material your body kit is made of.

DO

z SUSPENSION Usually, wider also means lower. Suspension, whether it's air or coils, is a critical aspect of any wide body build. If you're building solely for the track, coils are always recommended. If you want functionality, adjustability and curb rash avoidance, then air is likely the way to go. In either case, there are some things you should know. "A lot of the roads here aren't perfect," de Peralta says. "In Japan there are cars that are unfathomably low – lower than air cars – and insanely stiff, but they can get away with that because they don't need to run over anything. Their roads are just so good."

• Make sure you cut enough of the body for your travel needs. • Try to get your new, lowered suspension as close as possible to the stock geometry. Roll center adjusters, moving pivots, new toe links, ball joints and control arms are all things to consider.

DO

• In extreme cases, raising the front/rear sub frame may be necessary - especially with air - to avoid destroying any critical parts. • Lowering may also affect your driveshaft angle, so make sure it is optimized for performance and drivetrain longevity.

• Place air lines close

DON'T to moving/heated parts and exhaust systems. • Let air lines kink. • Hard line any components that should be moving freely.

"We saw a dude hard line the car to his suspension," de Peralta laughs. "It was the copper line and it lasted six days. It broke off right at the coilover and rendered the car immoveable and unworkable because he couldn't get a jack under it or air into the coil."

Still think bolt-on over fenders are the easy way out? Next time you contemplate criticizing one, consider the time it took to get everything just right. Or perhaps, you'll have a tip or two to make it even better. Like the Liberty Walk cars say: "Imagine all the people living life in peace."

$1,795 | bulletproofautomotive.com

Unveiled this January at the Tokyo Auto Salon, the new carbon fiber front lip spoiler from Varis Japan's sub-brand, Magnum Opus, adds a bit more aggression to the luxury Lexus RC-F while still keeping its appearance classic and timeless.

This design is a full front fender replacement for the FR-S, with a width increase of +20 mm across the full sweep of the wheel, instead of just the apex at the top of the fender arch. This alleviates exaggerated camber solutions and keeps the rotational arc of the tire away from the corner light. The goal is to offer a square setup solution, and one that is truly unique.

AIRING IT OUT Let me see you get low

(You scared?)

By Micky Slinger | Photography by Jeremy Alan Glover, Icon Media, Intuned Online, William Lam, Kevin Choi, Cimon Brouillette, Anna Taylor & Jordan Lenssen

Pssssssht. Up. Pssssssht. Down. There really is nothing comparable to the feeling of adjustability at your fingertips. That's exactly why air suspension is such a tremendous trend today. Coilovers are great for adjustability and damping rates, but the sometimes harsh ride and the fact that you have to physically get out of your car, take your wheels off and take your tools out leaves much to be desired. That's the point when your buddy down the street airs up from inside his old LS 400, laughs, and rolls off. However, air suspension still seems to be a mystery to some. There are wild misconceptions, genuine concerns, and the question of "How exactly did we get here?" You came to the right place, friend-o. We've done our homework, so here's our essay.

68

PASMAG

TUNING ESSENTIALS // 2015 STYLE BOOK // 2ND EDITION

LOW LIFE HISTORY In recent history, air suspension was synonymous with the VIP scene and it almost exclusively stayed that way for quite some time. Now, everyone and their mother can get a kit tailored for their vehicle. The exotic takeover has Lexuses (Lexi?) and Acuras moving over to make way for the Liberty Walk Lamborghinis and Rocket Bunny GT-Rs. What came before all of this though? The answer is mini-trucks.

"In the '90s, small trucks were extremely popular and lowering them was popular as well," explains Kevin Crowhurst, President of Air Assisted. "People were finding new ways to get lower and there was a need to have some form of adjustable suspension to lift [the vehicle] back up."

"Air suspension, for many years, was called a major modification. That would score somebody a lot of points in their class or category, and maybe be the difference between them taking home the trophy or not." – Kevin Crowhurst, President of Air Assisted

The '90s was the era of minitrucks and low-riders. With air suspension systems available from their larger off-road brothers, the systems were adapted to fit and used for low. Of course, with the competitors in the sub compact show scene always looking for a new edge to get a leg up on their rivals, air suspension was the way to go. "Air suspension, for many years, was called a major modification," Crowhurst says. "That would score somebody a lot of points in their class or category, and maybe be the difference between them taking home the trophy or not."

As you can imagine, jamming a truck setup into a Civic has its downfalls. The ride was also super mushy and handling was diminished, and as Freddie Fernandez of Autofashion USA tells us, there were even larger sacrifices. "If somebody tried to do a bag setup, they would have to cut into the unibody," Fernandez laughs. "With air cylinders, it was pretty much bolt-on. You'd just have to make custom brackets."

Air cylinder suspension systems were a step up and the first air solution for imports. They were essentially piston systems with smaller components to match the sub compacts they were being installed in. The ride quality still wasn't great, but it was leagues better than what truck bags had been delivering. In 2003, rumors of a company in Japan developing vehicle-specific kits, with air bags designed to replace the spring on the strut, began swirling. That company was Airrunner. Fernandez, having previously worked with the lead engineer, jumped right on board, put his Scion xA on air and didn't look back.

"The bags were different and everything was just made for the car," recalls Fernandez. "The comfort was there and the reliability was there – almost like the OEM stuff, just more adjustable." Vehicle-specific kits with improved management systems really changed the game. Nowadays, air systems are digitally controlled and come with preset ride heights that you can change right on a remote or your phone. To give you an idea of how far they've come: high-end OEMs like Audi and Mercedes-Benz offer air suspension kits as factory options now.

AIRING IT OUT

OVERBLOWN MISCONCEPTIONS Even though air suspension has been in the car modification scene for about 20 years, there are still a lot of 'what ifs' for potential buyers. How do you not end up like the VW, whose bags leaked and now can't even get a jack under the frame to tow it out? Research and do your homework is the simple answer. In this market, you really get what you pay for, and air suspension isn't a market where you want to be learning the hard way. For a first time buyer, it's best to go with middle- to high-range equipment. If you cheap out, it'll bite you later.

"A first time buyer is probably best going with a digital system with preset ride heights that are modern and easier to use," advises Crowhurst. "Something that's less intrusive and doesn't require any major modifications to your car." So now that you know where to aim your sights, you need to know what exactly it is you're shooting for. With a market that's so saturated with different setups, it's easy to lose your target. Looking at vehicle-specific kits ensures reliability. Universal kits can be slapped on anything and likely aren't tested on your exact model. Once your kit is picked out, get it done right.

"Make sure you're going to someone reputable to do your install, otherwise you could end up hating it," warns Fernandez. "A lot of people say, 'Oh, I can install it,' and next thing you know they're saying, 'F@#$ bags!'" "There's a lot of wiring involved and air line running," Fernandez continues. "It's something that's running in your car; like anything else, you've got to do maintenance – it's not going to run right all the time." Make sure to check your rubber as well. Continental or Firestone, those same people who make your tires make most high quality bags and sleeves. That also means less of a worry for those of you looking to run air in colder climates. Their rubbers run in snow, too.

The air trend trickled down through trucks to sub compacts, the dub scene to VIP, and now to the present, with everyone – from FR-Ss to Lambos – airing up. Air suspension has come a long way and has a lot of heritage that has lead to it being the most popular choice for a comfortable, everyday suspension. When it comes to navigating this saturated market: know what you're looking for and talk to people with knowledge and reputation in the world of air. After all is said and done, catch up with your friend in the LS and show him how you air out: across the street from your car with your iPhone.

Behind the making of Brixton Forged Wheels

T

aking a look through our Wheel Buyer’s Guide, you’ll see no shortage of quality manufacturers on the automotive stage. Prime among those is none other than Brixton Forged. Opening shop just over two years ago, they are young guns in the forged wheel industry, but have staked their claim as one of the most elite and exciting tailormade forged wheel companies to date. Manufacturing top-class lightweight monoblock and modular three-piece forged wheels, Brixton Forged uses unique and proprietary finishes showcasing not only their per-

Rooted in the heart of Los Angeles, California and founded by engineering and marketing professionals Adam Majcherkiewicz and Cody Williston, Brixton Forged incorporates an intricate team of seasoned professionals. “This company is sitting on a solid foundation of certified engineers, designers and branding professionals with a key focus on designing and producing the best forged wheels in the world,” Williston says. Recognizing that good design is enduring design, the Brixton Forged collection beautifully

Clients can choose between compression forged monoblocks or three-piece models that focus on concavity or trackability, with exposed or hidden hardware options that include 12-point stainless steel or aerospace-grade titanium, which is 29-percent stronger and offers weight savings of 45 percent, or over three pounds. They use locally sourced and forged aerospace-grade

demonstrates this idea as a leading bespoke wheel manufacturer that offers a truly tailored experience with a classic, but progressive flair. Since the beginning, Brixton Forged has sourced, manufactured and finished their entire product line in the Sunshine State. As a result, “We make full use of the outstanding talents of our engineers and maintain full control over the quality of our wheels at every stage of the production process,” Williston says. Today, you’ll find their wheels on the most popular show-stoppers all around the world, with a global dealer network ranging

from R1 Motorsport in California all the way to Simon Motorsport in Dubai. “We’ve always been tuners at heart,” Majcherkiewicz says. “Having the passion and talent behind it certainly helps, and you end up being able to create something that’s not only of the highest quality for the client, but high-quality in the sense of the brand too. Our clients deserve to have a wheel that represents quality from the core, and are proud to show friends and other industry enthusiasts.” Without further delay, let’s take a look at the processes that raise Brixton Forged above the bar.

LINE ART Brixton’s wheel offerings come in a wide variety of styles, all expertly designed by their in-house engineering team. They decide the optimal forging for each project: the depth, concavity and shape, and order the forgings if they don’t already have them. After all of the vehicle-specific model engineering, FEA testing and client approval, the raw aluminum forgings take the first step in the manufacturing process and begin taking shape. Here, the overall face shape is turned into the profile of the final product. The same thing goes for the barrel, which may have to be customized to match the face design. Through unique machining processes and evolution in tooling, each Brixton Forged wheel begins its life towards a truly showstopping wheel.

CUT ‘N’ CREATE

6061-T6 blank aluminum forgings to guarantee the highest quality, and utmost predictability, both in construction and on-vehicle performance. By sourcing quality components from a regular and local supplier, the team at Brixton is just a stones-throw away from where it gets its products, keeping everything within the family, and ensuring a safe, reliable and topnotch product. “Basically, what stands us apart from the rest is that we have hardly ever duplicated a wheel set. Each set is tailored to our client's tastes and driving preferences. We also source everything locally from California,” Majcherkiewicz says. “So we don’t just bring components in from overseas and assemble them in California. We pride ourselves on making sure we have access to the guys who have been doing it for years and years. In the end, we can trust the product and there are no surprises.” 92

Next up is the HAAS CNC machine, which takes the rough profile and beautifully cuts into the forged aluminum like a hot knife through butter. Spitting out the engineers’ designs into a language called “G-Code” the series of commands define where the cuts will happen, and with what-sized tools. Brixton Forged uses the highest-quality CNC mill and drill bits in the industry, and it’s the reason you see such renowned finishes and intricate designs, somehow exiting the mill looking as if they’ve already been polished. Due to their highly customized nature, each wheel comes standard with a milled billet aluminum Brixton Forged center cap, or centers can be custom bored to fit existing OEM center caps. For clients looking for that lightweight edge, Brixton can mill the back pad area to trim as much as 1.76 lbs. from each wheel, while still obtaining maximum strength and rigidity.

Stage 4

HANDCRAFTED While each component might look smooth as silk as it is removed from the CNC machine, the truth is, each edge – even some flat spots – are likely covered in burrs. To ensure a perfect canvas before any finishing work is even attempted, Brixton Forged puts each wheel through a bath to clean the wheel of any residue, and follows that with a hands-on de-burring, filing, buffing and polishing process. Multiple eyes inspect every wheel before it moves on. When they pass the visual and feel tests, their special finishes – high-luster to brushed – are applied. Wheels with multiple color tones (or combinations of brushed and highluster finishes) are put through the powder-coating process and

HANDCRAFTED finishing stages as many as four times so that no spot – no detail – goes unnoticed. “For finishes, we utilize some of the best craftsmen in the California area,” Majcherkiewicz says. “We do the design, engineering, cutting, and sourcing of components ourselves. It ensures the product is always of consistent quality by some of the most skilled professionals in the wheel manufacturing industry.”

Stage 5

FRAMEWORK Once the center is built and passes inspection, it is mounted to a rim half made from domestic, aircraft-grade aluminum. Each rim half is spun forged and heat treated twice to achieve maximum tensile strength before it undergoes the same finishing process and is fitted to the center.

Stage 6

PICK A COLOR, ANY COLOR Brixton Forged prides itself on its workmanship behind each piece of aluminum, but its color selections are equally as impressive. Using a combination of powder-coats, Brixton Forged can replicate just about any color, and offer a unique number of finishes specific to each wheel and hardware accessory. Standard hardware finishes are polished, matte black or gloss black. For transparent coat finishes, Brixton Forged uses a series of industry-leading and handselected colors, allowing a color finish that still showcases the top-quality metal craftsmanship and finish underneath. To date, the only finish the company doesn’t offer is anodized, but with the number of brushed and polished options, there are more than enough to keep clients happy. “We have some of the best rendering software and digital artists, too,” Majcherkiewicz explains. “We can bounce back color options [to the client] right on the spot and dial that to exactly what the client wants.”

Stage 7

THE GRAND FINALE After the wheel and each of its components are finished, the final assembly sees each face, dish and bolt hand collected and installed by Brixton’s certified technicians. Every bolt is carefully torqued to specification, every seal is inspected, and every tolerance – from the center-to-dish gap to the runout – is exact. Each wheel undergoes a final quality inspection 94

before being cleaned one final time, then it’s off to be wrapped, boxed and shipped to the client, who, depending on order numbers and time of the year, has waited five to eight weeks for their pristine product. But when it’s one of the nicest, most customizable, durable and highest quality wheel sets available in the industry today, we say the wait is well worth it. “Every time a design comes through for someone’s car – any project – it comes across my desk, and it could be minute changes, or things that completely affect the concavity,” Majcherkiewicz says. “But it’s those little tweaks that, in the end, give it a completely tailored finish. And that’s what Brixton Forged came from, basically. It’s that want - to come out with something that the client loves, that you’ve put the time into, and that showcases to others that we’ve put 110 percent into it.”

WHEELS 101 By Jordan Lenssen // Photography by Adam Zillin, Cullen Cheung, Hoonigan, Linus Lam, Phillip Awad

OK, let's cut to the chase. Your car's awesome. It's got the latest kit, the biggest wing, the freshest paint, brandspankin' new bucket seats, and matching harnesses and interior lighting…But you're rolling on a giant set of dubs, and they're from the VIP you just sold to build this. What gives? They don't match! That'll cost you some style points at the show, and on the road. Maybe we said awesome too soon. There are few things that can define or decline a vehicle's style like a set of wheels. Size, finish, width, offset, construction – all of these things can vary drastically and require the perfect combination of compliments to help define your vehicle's purpose and style. So, what do you need to know? Are you style heavy? Motorsport inspired? Do you want to hard park or fly down the back straight into the horizon? Let's take a look at some of the different wheel types and to help you decide what works best for you…

MANUFACTURING PROCESSES GRAVITY CAST This is the most basic (and typically, cost effective) process of manufacturing. Utilizing gravity, aluminum is simply poured into mold. Because there is no pressure on the material, it is less dense than a pressure cast, meaning more material to meet the required strengths, resulting in a heavier wheel. Cast constructions tend to have less detail due to the lack of machining/milling processes involved. LOW-PRESSURE CAST Lighter and stronger than gravity casting, these are often what you'll find from OEMs. It uses pressure to draw the material up into the mold, resulting in a denser, stronger and lighter wheel by using less material than gravity casts. 96

PASMAG

Wheel Guide Intro_V2.indd 1

FLOW FORM A flow-formed wheel can begin life as either cast or forged billet aluminum. The wheel is either molded (cast) or pressed into a blank (forged), but with a shallow barrel. Using heat and high-pressure rollers, the barrel is spun pressed (or flow formed) into shape. This aligns the molecular structure (grain) of the aluminum, resulting in a thinner barrel with less rotating mass for optimal efficiency and highstrength over a cast-only construction. Flowformed cast wheels can offer barrel strengths closer to forged wheels, without the cost.

MAT CAST This process takes a one-piece cast with a short barrel and places it on a roll-forging machine (similar to flow forming), which pulls the barrel and elongates it to size. This strengthens the barrel material, aligning the structure and reducing weight while still maintaining a lower cost. It is a process developed and licensed by Enkei, which claims to make the barrel as strong and light as a forged wheel.

FLOW FORMED FORGED

FLOW FORMED CAST

HIGH-PRESSURE CAST Similar in process to the low-pressure cast, high-pressure casts draw the material into the mold, but at higher pressures, resulting in greater strength and weight savings. You can find high-pressure casts on many high-performance OEM vehicles.

CONSTRUCTION ONE-PIECE Can be cast or forged (monoblock) aluminum. Because of the mold, a cast wheel will typically lack the finer details of a forged wheel, which can be CNC milled for detail and weight reduction. In forged form, these are the lightest of the wheel types. TWO-PIECE Typically, these consist of the face and barrel, but companies are also manufacturing inner or outer barrels mounted to the face and opposing barrel piece. These can be cast or forged faces and barrels, or a mix of the two to reduce cost. The centers can be either welded or bolted to the barrel, giving the appearance of a three-piece without the price. THREE-PIECE Made of an inner barrel, outer barrel and face, they are bolted together and sealed inside to prevent air leakage. These are the most customizable wheels due to the various materials, colors and finishes available. Again, these can be cast or forged faces and barrels, or a mix of the two to reduce cost. Proper assembly and quality components are key to prevent air leakage issues. FOUR-PIECE The future of wheel technology…just kidding.

FORGED Forged wheels are the pinnacle in strength, light weight, and design. Starting from a single block of billet aluminum, they are offered in monoblock (one-piece), two-and three-piece versions. Monoblocks are typically the strongest of the three. A high-pressure, heated forge press stamps a wheel-shaped blank. If it is a monoblock, the blank is flow-formed to create the barrel, then it travels to CNC milling, deburring and finishing to create the face design and final product. A two- or three-piece version sees the face go from stamping to CNC milling, while the barrel is flow-formed into shape. Because forged wheels start as a single piece of aluminum, there are zero compromises in material density and consistency, but the elaborate construction process means they are on the top end of the price scale.

CALCULATE YOUR OWN OFFSET By Micky Slinger

You see these numbers: -38 et, -10 et, 7 et… What do they all mean?! Well, if you're looking for a new set of shoes or want to figure out your own, here's how you get your offset: 1 Turn your wheel face down on the ground. Measure from the bottom of the inside of the wheel, straight up to the rim lip. 2 Now, measure from your hub straight up to the rim lip. 3 Take both of your results and convert them to millimeters (mm). 4 Divide the bottom lip measurement (longer measurement) by two. 5 Subtract your hub-to-lip measurement from the resulting number Voila. You have your offset!

EXAMPLE

Bottom to lip= =7"11" Hub to lip 11" = 279.4 mm 7" = 177.8 mm 279.4 / 2 = 139.7 mm 139.7 – 177.8 = -38.1 mm OFFSET = -38.1

SPUN FORGED This technology melds forging and flow-forming and technologies at the same time. A single piece of billet aluminum is forged pressed, but while it is being spun – often at an angle – to help create the shape. This creates a circular molecular structure for ultimate strength. It then undergoes a flow-form process similar to a traditional forged wheel, followed by CNC milling and finishing. MOLD FORGED Starting from a solid block of billet aluminum, this puts a wheel through a series of forge presses that progressively stamp the wheel and barrel into shape before going to milling and finishing. It strengthens the molecular grain structure differently than flow forming, but offers similar impressive weight savings and strength.

Photography by Jeremy Alan Glover

Tires. An essential part of style? Some would say no, others would argue yes. If you’re of the latter, we tend to agree, because at the end of the day, whether we’re talking about a VIP or a Best in Show winner, a vehicle’s style is reflected in the care and attention given to every aspect and component.

TEMPERATURE RATING Again rated from high to low, tires are given an A, B or C designation for their ability to dissipate heat and resist heat degradation. The temperature rating is based on a 30 minute test at high-temperatures to ensure against sudden tire failure or a drop in performance.

With the latest stance movements, a lot of us are trying to experiment with sizes to get that one-off custom tire fitment. While we admit it can look amazing when done right, these fitments are nowhere near recom mended widths, camber or offsets. In some States and Provinces it is illegal to have any part of the wheel extending beyond the bodywork (case in point, the Province of Quebec vs. hellaflush). And when there’s a lot of time and money put into creating that perfect look, make sure to do your research to get the rubber and the style that’s best for you! 118

PASMAG

Tire Guide Intro.indd 1

SPEED RATING Q R S T U H V Z W Y

= 99 mph, 160 km/h = 106 mph, 170 km/h = 112 mph, 180 km/h = 118 mph, 190 km/h = 124 mph, 200 km/h = 130 mph, 210 km/h = 149 mph, 240 km/h = 149 mph, 240 km/h = 168 mph, 270 km/h = 186 mph, 300 km/h

18 IS THE DIAMETER OF THE WHEEL (IN INCHES)

LOAD RATING KILOGRAMS

TRACTION RATING Rated from high to low, tires either receive an AA, A, B or C rating. The rating depends on the ability of the tire to stop on wet pavement. Generally you want this to be high, but again it depends on your use (ie. if it’s going to be a street or track tire).

Finally there is the load and speed rating found on every tire. From the factory, these values are expressed as a number and letter after the tire size. Sometimes the speed rating can also be incorporated into the tire size (ie. 265/35 YR18). A 93Y on the load index means the tire can handle up to 1433 lbs. of load. The Y indicates the top speed rating. See the chart below for the complete measurements.

R IS FOR RADIAL TECHNOLOGY

POUNDS

TREAD WEAR This is the number designation given to the tire to determine the wear rate of the tire. The higher the number the better. A rating of 300 should last approximately 30,000 miles (in ideal conditions) and likewise a 400-rated tire should last twice as long as a 200 rated tire. But remember, this does not determine performance – many high-performance tires have lower ratings because they provide excellent grip, but wear fast.

265 MM (10.4 INCHES) WIDE

35-PROFILE IS 35-PERCENT OF THE WIDTH (SIDEWALL HEIGHT = 92.75 MM OR 3.6 INCHES)

LOAD INDEX

When choosing the right tire, there are more factors to consider than just size. You will have to examine the Uniform Tire Quality Grading or UTQG. The UTQG gives an insight as to how well the tire will grip, how it performs under high temperatures and how long the tire should last. The UTQG (ie. 100-AA-A, 300-A-B) is made up of three categories:

“style,” we recommend going with the recommended sizes based on your wheel. Stance and camber aside, properly choosing a tire will ensure longevity and prevent any unwanted blowouts while you’re cruising along your favorite route with no spare in sight.

PASMAG WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL OF ITS PARTNERS IN THE RE-FIT BUILD

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

R E F I T . P A S M A G . C O M

The PASMAG Re-FIT project is a collaboration with Honda Canada to create the perfect blend of style and performance for the third-generation Honda FIT. A global success, the FIT was given the special PASMAG treatment to showcase the versatile platform at major Canadian auto shows across the country. Highlighted by a long list of performance and JDM upgrades, PASMAG sourced a Mugen body kit straight from Japan while a set of WP Pro brakes sit nestled behind six-spoke Fast Hayaku wheels for some motorsport-inspired style. Bisimoto developed a special one-off Pulse Chamber muffler and axles to give the Re-FIT the sound and stability it deserved, which is enhanced by a set of Tein Street Flex coilovers and Cusco front and rear sway bars. The PASMAG Re-FIT project drew wide fanfare at Honda booths across the Canadian auto show landscape, and highlights why Honda continues to be a top platform choice for enthusiasts and tuners worldwide. LOOK OUT FOR THE 16-PAGE RE-FIT MAGAZINE INSERT IN THE AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2015 ISSUE OF PASMAG BROUGHT TO YOU BY

STYLE // MOBILE ELECTRONICS // PERFORMANCE

PASMAG (PERFORMANCE AUTO & SOUND MAGAZINE) was approached by Honda Canada and provided a 2015 Honda Fit EX to show what can be done with the platform that’s been heavily embraced by the automotive aftermarket. To make it a true PASMAG project, the magazine team tackled this “Re-FIT”, taking inspiration from the JDM (Japanese Domestic BROUGHT

Market) and B-spec racing scenes. To get the proper look and feel, PASMAG sourced a full Mugen body kit from Japan, courtesy of Options Auto Salon. This kit gives the Fit an OEM fit and finish, while delivering a sporty and aggressive tone. This was then wrapped in Arlon Graphics’ Aluminum Red vinyl by GTA Wrapz for a unique look, shine and feel, captured expertly at the BP

imaging photography studio. To continue the JDM B-spec vibe, Tein was called on for a suspension solution – and they delivered. PASMAG’s Re-FIT sits pretty on Street Flex coilovers for spirited street and track driving. To back this up, lightweight Fast Hayaku wheels dressed in Nitto NeoGen tires provide style, grip and response. Cusco stepped up to the plate to elimi-

nate body roll in the little hatch with their front and rear sway bars, strut tower bar and front lower arm bar. This chassis is going nowhere. After seeing master builder Bisimoto’s offerings from his own project Fit at the 2014 SEMA Show, PASMAG knew that his genius was needed on the Re-FIT. Rolling easy on new axles, sounding and performing better with the new Pulse Chamber muffler, and having

Puröl engine oil to keep things running smoothly are all definite pluses. Inside, the Re-FIT not only looks trackable, but it’s also very comfortable. Corbeau’s Sportline Boss Evo seats take up the helm with Sabelt four-point harnesses at the ready. While you’re securely fastened through the corners, ATI gauges oversee exhaust, gas and engine/oil temperature, as well as the

voltage output coming from the XS Power battery. PASMAG’s Re-FIT is the Fit that does it all. Whether it’s cruising around town or being a weekend warrior at the track, the Re-FIT has room for groceries, sports equipment and track tires. Whatever life throws at you, this little guy can handle everything, and look great doing it!

WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS AS A MODEL? I believe my experience in photography has helped with my modeling. I understand lighting and composition in depth, and it has helped me gain perspective with my posing and overall look of the photograph. I acknowledge photography as an art form, and it allows me to be artistic as a model.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST BEAUTY SECRET? A well-balanced formula between confidence an humility... and plenty of sleep!

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO CHANGE A SPARE TIRE? Nope! The only problem I've ever had was driving to a photoshoot and my splash guard in the front was dragging on the highway. I thought my bumper was dragging on the ground, so I freaked out and called AAA. The guy wasn't too happy that he came all the way just to cut the guard off and throw it in my trunk!
