FEAR THE REAPER HONDA CIVIC TYPE-R WILL WE GET ONE?

THE INTERNET IS DROOLING and they want more. Honda has released teaser after teaser of their new Civic Type-R, and now they’ve unveiled another concept in Paris at the auto show. With orders now open for the new hothatched Civic overseas, those of us in North America are left asking, “What about us?” There are a few theories on this; one of which stating that we won’t ever see a performance version of the Civic here because of what’s called “fleet wide fuel economy.” Bringing over a turbocharged model and introducing it to a fleet of fuel conscious commuters isn’t going to help Honda’s average fuel consumption, and could actually result in fines should it go over the limit. Two more rumors have come out, the first being that Honda will forgo the Euro version to give us our own Type-R instead. The 2.0L turbo engine from overseas could be plunked into the current-gen Civie with some Type-R upgrades. The second is that a reworked version of the CR-Z platform could be the home for the Type-R heart. What do you think? Could it happen? Would you settle for a different version of the Type-R? IT’S BIGGER, IT’S MEANER, AND ITS BITE IS AS SHARP AS ITS BARK. Lingenfelter Performance Engineering and Southern Comfort Automotive partnered together to tackle Chevrolet’s Silverado and inject it with a long list of enhancements to bring us the 550 horsepower supercharged “Reaper.” Starting up front with an optional Magnuson TSV1900 supercharger system, air is pushed through the 6.2L V8 is out of a CORSA Performance exhaust system, which all sits 3-inches higher thanks to a set of Fox Racing 3.0 factory series shocks with remote reservoirs that allow 9.2 inches of travel up front and 11.2 in the rear. Making use of that power and height advantage, the Reaper rolls over obstacles using optional 17-inch beadlock wheels and General Grabber A/T tires, housed under flared wide body fenders. Among other enhancements are a new front end for steep approaches, rock guards, and a floodlight system that includes two light bars for 11,480 lumens. Three versions of the Reaper are now available at select Chevy dealers, starting from the mid $50,000s.

The GMC Sierra 1500 full-size light-duty pickup, Yukon full-size SUV and Terrain compact SUV ranked highest in their respective segments in the 2015 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study. The GMC brand gained six spots, moving up to No. 10 overall (in a tie). The 2015 study tracks 2012 model year vehicles in the third year of ownership. Both the Sierra 1500 and Yukon also achieved the highest score in their segments in the 2014 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study. “The momentum continues at GMC with this recognition,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC Sales and Marketing. “We expect all of our vehicles to perform at the highest level every time a customer gets behind the wheel and this achievement validates our commitment to dependability and reliability.”

LOW-LIFE LUXURY Tjin Edition. We know them from the Camaros, the Mustangs, the 2014 SEMA-award winning Ford Focus, and the absolutely slammed F-150 featured in the last TRUCKS issue – and perhaps you’ve even spotted them on their RoadShow tour. Now they’ve lowered the boom on Ford’s biggest SUV, getting down the old school way with air ride and custom pulled fenders by Unique Fabrication and Josh Freeman – a necessity to ﬁt a giant and gleaming set of Rotiform TMB 24s ﬁnished in a unique bronze hand-chosen by Rotiform’s own John Whipple. The TMBs match perfectly in color and rarity to the Axalta paint scheme, which covers the exterior in a faded robin’s egg blue that leaves us feeling warm, fuzzy, and yes – in love. Helping air it down, Tjin called on VIAIR for compressors, Accuair for air management and AirREX for their digital gauges to manage the air pressure

in the struts and tank, mak this Expedition as much a show-shocker as it is daily driver. Comfort takes precedent as much as style here, but a Vortech charge cooler, side exit MagnaFlow exhaust and six-piston Baer big brake kit makes sure it hits all the performance marks, too. No detail was left unturned and to that end, the Katzkin black leather interior provides ample luxury for listeners of the audiophile-worthy sound system ﬁlled with Sony components and Scosche distribution blocks and wiring. The flawless and intricate workmanship helped the Expedition take home Ford’s prestigious SEMA award for Outstanding Achievement in Design. SMALL PICK-UP, BIG POTENTIAL In case you missed it at the Detroit Auto Show, Hyundai ﬂipped the small truck world on its head with the Santa Cruz Crossover – and it may very well be built if the press and public opinion have anything to do with it. Filling a thin segment of small pickups aimed at the younger market, Hyundai’s aim with the Santa Cruz is to ﬁll the role of both crossover and adventure vehicle. The truck bed expands for a variety of

jobs and activities, and the rear-hinged rear doors allow for easy cabin access. “The Santa Cruz crossover truck concept meets the unspoken needs of a growing Millennial lifestyle we call ‘Urban Adventurers’,” said Mark Dipko, director, corporate planning, Hyundai Motor America. “This new crossover allows them all the expandable utility they need throughout their active week, from work-life professionalism, to social interests, to a whole variety of outdoor pursuits, without the typical compromises they have come to expect from the industry’s current product offerings.” Powering the Concept is Hyundai’s 2.0-liter turbo diesel powertrain, putting out 190 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque through its HTRAC all-wheel drive system, which the company says could achieve as much as 30 mpg.

INTO THE TRUCKIN’ FUTURE DAIMLER’S SUPERTRUCK & WESTERN STAR 5700 XE

The Mid-America Trucking show had a glimpse into the future of the industry with Daimler’s latest Freightliner SuperTruck, and the Western Star 5700XE, set for production this May in Cleveland, North Carolina. Through advanced aero and an all-new Detroit powertrain DD15 engine (455-505 hp & 1,650-1,750 lb-ft) and DT12 automated transmission, the 5700 uses almost 15% less fuel than its competition, meaning less stops and more cash in driver’s, or company pockets. The Freightliner SuperTruck is equipped with the DT12 automated transmission and predictive technology that controls the vehicle speed using GPS and digital 3D maps. And in test drives, at a weight of 29.5 metric tons (65,000 lbs. GVWR), it consumed just 12.2 mpg at 65 mph. In addition, it achieved 115% greater freight eﬃciency over a 2009 baseline truck. With a $40 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, it appears the future of truck transport is just around the corner. Maybe Homer Simpson’s experience with the “Navitron Auto Drive” system wasn’t far off the truth after all…

BRONCO COLLABO Skyjacker 40th Anniversary Ford Bronco 4x4 Back in 1976, some of us may have been playing with toy cars nearly identical to this. Perhaps not as radical, but Skyjacker and Matchbox have teamed up to throw back to one of the originators of the off-road trend. Taking the 1976 Bronco, the design teams utilized a dream roster of suppliers to build the ultimate classic off-roader to celebrate Skyjacker’s 40th anniversary at the 2014 SEMA show in its traditional colors. Highlighted by Skyjacker’s latest suspension products, BMF wheels, Bushwacker body upgrades, Hedman headers and SSBC brakes, the modern components make it ultra-trail worthy, while the yellow

roll-cage and driver canopy give it a retro-flair that makes this Bronco truly one of a kind. “The concept was to utilize the trail-tested, tough-as-nails 1976 Bronco platform and beef it up with the full Skyjacker off-road treatment. The end result is a Matchbox Bronco that will tackle any terrain in its path,” says Felix Holst, Vice President, Wheels Design at Mattel. Best of all, each of these products are available for anyone looking to build their own ‘66-77 Bronco. And if you’re looking for a bit of nostalgia or want to get the younger generation in on the action, Mattel has even created a 1:64 scale of the iconic workhorse, available at select toy stores and online.

BACK IN (AND BUILT FOR) BATTLE

Nissan announced its return to pick-up territory in a big way, launching the full-size 2016 Titan XD. Flanked by a 5.0L Cummins turbo diesel, the truck is 100-percent American, with design and engineering being conducted in Tennessee, California, Michigan and Arizona, while Tennessee and Indiana build the engines. Final assembly will happen in Mississippi. The Cummins turbo diesel will output 310 horses and 555 lb-ft of torque, but its maximum payload of 2,000 pounds and towing capacity of 12,000 pounds (when properly equipped) really shows its muscle. The new fully-boxed, full-length ladder frame offers extreme stiffness and resistance to lateral, vertical and torsional bending. Best of all, while it offers heavy-duty performance, the Titan XD will also offer unrivaled comfort via Nissan’s NASA-inspired “zero-gravity” seats, which we can attest are one of (if not the) most comfortable long-distance chairs we’ve ever sat in. Expect pricing on the redesigned Titan XD to be above the 2015 mark of $29,640 (base) when it is launched later this year.

1000 The Tundra TRD Pro Desert Race Truck suffered a large gash out of the driver’s side doors after getting caught on a stranded vehicle, tearing the sheet metal in knife-like fashion. Uninjured and still driveable, legendary off-road racer Ivan “Ironman” Stewart coached the team to Toyota’s 304th off-road win. After the victory, the team proved its endurance again by driving the TRDs over 1,000 miles back to the start line.

n a world dominated by big trucks and big personalities, standing out in a crowd can be a difficult thing for a newcomer to pick-ups. Mallory Wetherington was just that person when it was time to upgrade from her Cobalt SS into something bigger and better. She wanted to make an impression. And she’s done just that. Growing up in the heart of America, it was an easy choice to make the transition to a pick-up, but one that differed greatly from the low-riding fourbanger car she was driving. Still, she knew when she settled on the Ford F-150 – one of the industry’s most popular flatbeds and the 2015 North American truck of the year – that she made the right decision. In fact, before she had the truck, she knew what she wanted to do with it: lift it and load it with sound. It’s a winning formula when done right. Thankfully for her, Mallory’s husband Mark works with one of the largest truck tuning and building shops in the United States in DV8 Motorsports. With guidance throughout, he helped source the parts from the best in the business to make it exactly what she’d dreamed. “We’re a one-stop truck shop,” Mark says. “We specialize in diesel performance, wheels, tires, lifted – we’re fully in-house – and we do complete audio builds. The whole nine yards.” Mallory was in great hands. DV8 took care of the BDS Suspension coilover lift kit and Fox front reservoir coilovers and 2.0 Series rear shocks, which lifts the F-150 six inches. When paired with the 22-inch American Force flat black Shield wheels and hulking 37-inch Toyo Open Country tires, it looks as clean as any lifted build we’ve seen. But all that lift makes for a difficult entry, and while Mallory surely has some ups as a figure skating director and coach (which explains the cool shoot location – no pun intended), AMP Research automatic retractable steps are a welcome addition. Just open the door and step up!

The black accents on the accessories, underbody and smoked lamps play a devilish contrast to the white exterior, but it gets even hotter once the lights go out. “I’ve wanted to do white and purple,” Mallory says of her color scheme. You might be asking, ‘Where’s the purple?’, but look closer and you’ll find it on the Smittybilt M1 grille, Fabtech anodized upper control arms, coils, traction bars, tow bar, and Magnitech diff cover. Heck, even the

inlet tube from the K&N filter has been given the royal treatment. Just don’t get too close, or the HornBlasters Shocker Train Horn kit may blow your ears off. When the lights dim, a custom set of purple LED under lights give Mallory the perfect blend of personality and uniqueness compared to many of her pick-up counterparts. “I’ve always been a big fan of interior and exterior lighting, trying to keep it a little different,” Mallory says. “Instead of using the bulbs, we

used tape because it gives it a better glow and the exact color I wanted.” Making sure her interior didn’t feel left out, the A-pillars, foot wells and speakers are tastefully treated in the glow, too. While color is nice and all, the key for her was sourcing a proper sound system. As many of us know, fitting good sound and hard-hitting bass isn’t always the easiest thing in a cab that’s the size of a few large coolers. Good thing DV8 knows a thing or two about custom truck audio. “We had already built her truck completely, so the next step was the audio,” Mark says. “I’d been planning on doing an audio build for six to

“IT WAS EITHER RUN A WHOLE BUNCH OF EIGHTS, OR JUST ONE OR TWO FLAT 10S UNDER THE SEAT IN A CRAPPY BOX THAT YOU COULDN’T SEE!” – MARK WETHERINGTON seven months, and Tony, our Memphis rep approached me and asked, ‘You’ve done Memphis booths in the past, do you guys want to do it again?’ It was just perfect timing considering I was already planning on doing the system in my wife’s truck anyways.” The plan? To build it in time for Spring Break Nationals and have it front and center at the Memphis Car Audio booth. With that in mind, Mark and DV8’s audio installer Kyle Cummings went gangbusters to build the whole system, which meant loading with as much quality gear as possible. The Memphis MCX subwoofer and midrange amps found a home in custom brackets mounted in the headliner, while the SA midbass was tucked neatly under the driver seat. Two sets of MClass components were fitted into the doors – the two midbasses on each side surrounded in glowing purple, and the tweeters mounted right behind the A-pillars. But it’s in the back where the boom goes big. We all know cab space in a pick-up is at a higher premium than a Manhattan loft, so trying to maximize space and sound can be a bit of a formulaic nightmare. “It was either run a whole bunch of eights, or just one or two ﬂat 10s under the seat in a crappy box that you couldn’t see,” Mark laughs. “To get the most sound out of what we were

doing and to get the best looking box, it really forced us to use the eight-inch subwoofers.” Keeping with Mallory’s desire for a factoryfresh finish that was also functional, Kyle and Mark came up with an intuitive design that would fit and punch. “It’s actually two separate boxes that we built to look like one,” Mark says. “It’s about a cube and two-thirds on each side, and ported. This thing drops, especially with just four eights. It moves a lot of air.” That’s undoubtedly much to do with the box design and hard hitting frequencies provided by the MClass double roll butyl surround and ultra-strong carbon-layered construction. It also makes for Mallory’s favorite part of her blasting beauty. “That came out beautiful,” Mallory says of her enclosure, aka “Bedlam.” “That is Mark’s custom design and he did all the math – it’s just so impressive.” The truck sat loud and proud with Memphis at SBN, and while it didn’t enter any sound competitions because the system was still so fresh, Mallory isn’t ruling any out in the future. Mark is even looking into a supercharger or twin-turbo install, so we doubt this is the last we’ll hear about it. And if you’re within a few blocks of this thing, we can guarantee it won’t be.

t’s fair to say that we all grew up with Hotwheels and RC cars. They were our cars before we had cars. You could own a custom-painted Lamborghini or a VW Bus with surfboards sticking out the back. Some of them were even big enough to carry others. The possibilities were endless and it was a fitting start to the oncoming automotive obsession. Trenton Ulicny is one such enthusiast. On top of being a co-owner of a nutrition chain and a cofounder of a line of fine sake and spirits, vehicles have always been a part of his life. So much so that in 1998, he somehow found the time and started the automotive marketing and strategy group, The Collective. Part of what The Collective does is building show cars for certain companies to show off what their product can really do. In 2014, Trenton was approached by Energy Suspension to build a car for SEMA. “We were asked by Energy Suspension to build either a Tacoma or a Miata,” says Ulicny. “Being that I had a Tacoma in the garage, it was an easy choice, and gave me a reason to build a truck I had been dreaming of for some time.” Ulicny was going to build a truck with toy car inspiration – something that big kids everywhere would love. The goal was to put together a Tacoma that looked the part, performed, and even had an awesome gimmick. Being that Ulicny and his wife are both motorcycle riders, it only made sense for the truck to carry their twin Ducati Monsters, right? This Tacoma is the toy truck that you begged your parents for at Christmas.

Getting a motorcycle hauler onto the truck was one thing, but having it fit was another. Ulicny enlisted the help of the skilled fabricators at Bio Kustumz to bring his original sketches to life. The crew at Bio Kustumz was more than willing and soon got to lengthening, strengthening and modifying the frame of the Tacoma to accommodate the hydraulic loading system. While they were back there, Bio Kustumz added custom four-inch drop spindles, four-linked the rear and moved the rear axle back 10 inches. The new custom rear bumper was originally going to have some sort of bespoke lighting setup, but The Collective’s resident artist, Chris Dunlop, suggested reusing the factory taillights. They were cut in half, resealed and then turned upside down to be mounted. This saved some major headaches and ended up flowing with the bed sides and rear end nicely.

Next came the fun part: the motorcycle deck. An Amerideck hydraulic loading system was sourced and modified to fit in the now-capable bed of the Tacoma. Spec’d to load up to 2,500 pounds and all from the comfort of the cab, this was the one. All of the components to the hydraulic lift system are tucked neatly under the lift and in the bed of the truck for an extremely clean install. Ulicny explains how it all goes down – and then back up. “The Amerideck Motorcycle Deck was modified to fit the Tacoma, and goes from loaded position to sitting flat on the ground behind the truck to make loading extremely easy,” he says. “Roll the motorcycle up into the wheel chock, add two tie-downs, press a button and they lift onto the back of the truck.” It’s all well and good to have the convenience of loading up a pair of Ducs with the push of a button, but

To combat the weight issues, Icon Suspension remote reservoir shocks were installed in the rear with Firestone airbags. The front sports Icon coilovers, custom built for the ‘Yota, which are dialed down for a tasteful drop. A full Energy Suspension bushing replacement is in effect as well, so everything stays nice and tight while hauling. “Everybody lifts Tacomas, so to stand out from the crowd, make entrance in and out of the Tacoma easy, and achieve that RC truck

slammed look on big tires that every kid (and big kid) loves, we set out to find a way to lower the truck while at the same time tuck 33-inch diameter tires,” smiles Ulicny. “Lots of custom fabrication to the frame, suspension, fenders and wheel wells made it happen.” Bringing down all that weight from speed was also a concern, so Tundra Racing was called upon to convert the rear brakes to discs and the front hubs to six-lugs. StopTech four-piston calipers were slapped on the front as well for peace of mind.

As Ulicny mentioned, under the six-inch flare and three-inch rise Fiberwerx fenders sit 20-inch KMC XD128 wheels paired with some truly massive 285/55 Nitto Trail Grappler tires. A Demello Offroad bumper was custom-widened in the front to match up with the fenders and to provide a hiding place for the 12,000 pound rated TJM winch. Once all was installed, the Tacoma was taken to Wraps1 to get the Avery Denison Matte Khaki wrap with custom red and black accents. California Upholstery followed the red and black accent theme on the inside, as well as putting in the custom Roadwire leather interior. Before this all went down though, the whole cab was coated in Line-X and sprinkled with Dynamat, offering a quiet ride for passengers, but also providing some great acoustics for the sound system. Cruising tunes are performed by a symphony of Audison Prima speakers, processors and amps, while a pair of Hertz Energy ES 250.2 subs boom in the back. Quality components are nothing without quality wiring, so Scosche is on the scene with their EFX power/ ground wiring. It pays off to stay a kid at heart. Not only does it make life just a little more fun, but it also provides you with some kickass hobbies. Ulicny may have started off small with RC trucks and Hotwheels, but now he’s got the best toy to tow around his others.

unning around SEMA is kind of like being at an exotic car show. In the same way that the fifth Ferrari you see is less exciting than the first, seeing the same vehicles at the show with the same things done to them, over and over agin, can carry that same excitement factor. Things start to blur a little and you start being able to really differentiate which cars break the mold. When wading through Ford’s packed internal presence, A.R.E.’s F-150 was one of those vehicles. The big, blue behemoth towered over the Mustangs lined up beside it, shining away and packed up to the grille with goodies. Although it was spotless on the floor, its “extreme sports” theme hinted that you could drive it out the doors of the LVCC, into the desert and ‘have a time’ with the contents stuffed in the back. “Extreme athletes have a lot of gear to take around to their different destinations,” A.R.E. CEO Andy Clutter says of the extreme sports theme. “We thought showcasing a truck for these types of athletes would not only be cool, but a great way to show off how dynamic our products can be.” Indeed. Their ToolMaster HD fiberglass truck cap showed how impressive it is by fitting Tony Hawk skateboards, Shaun White snowboards, a 1987 reissue Harrow bike, three helmets and even a fridge, which all sit on top of twin PickupVault lockable bed storage units. This truck bed is a good time. You’ll notice that each of these things are each mounted to fit, but also to show off. There are some interesting techniques at play to accomplish that, and the man responsible is Trent VanArsdalen of Trent’s Trick Upholstery. Trent, as all builders do, takes advantage of spare parts and odds and ends as often as he can. One of my favorite excerpts from our chat was, “With these builds, everything is just so close, so

I had to go shopping in my attic.” Knowing that this truck came together with repurposed materials ups the cool factor exponentially. Look at the helmets dangling out the side window of the cap. How are those suspended there? Bicycle inner tubes. How do those skateboards and snowboards not knock around the bed? Big o-rings secure those things down. Where did those awesome cast aluminum arms that position the snowboard racks come from? They’re plastic armrest inner-structures from an old van, painted to look like cast metal. Oh, and all of the hardware on the truck has been replaced with an upgraded billet aluminum or stainless steel component, which VanArsdalen manufactures. All of these killer ideas came from the mad mind of Trent. “I also did the stainless steel, laser-cut work inside and outside the truck, which I call ‘Mechanical Wilderness,’” says VanA-

rsdalen. “I really tried to keep that theme throughout the whole truck.” The Mechanical Wilderness theme is featured on the bumpers, grille, inner door panels, interior inserts and even ghosted into the Skyjacker suspension components. That’s dedication. Paired with the snazzy Skyjacker components, Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 “helper” springs provide a bit of assistance with all that junk in the trunk. Air Lift actually made the four-hour drive from Michigan to Ohio, where Trent’s shop is, to make the first F-150 system of its kind. “They physically drove down and mocked [a system] up, then went back to their facility and made it, and then sent it back to me,” VanArsdalen recalls. “It’s a wireless remote control leveling system. It’s almost like a garage door opener controller on the sun visor with three presets and manual settings on it for load.”

Of course the rest of the pickup has a rugged look to back up the components that make up this F-150 funfest. Fab Four bumpers get some custom touches and sit on the front and the back. Bushwacker pocketstyle fenders widen out over the upgraded DUB Monster Energy Edition 538MB wheels wrapped in do-it-all Toyo Open Country tires. LED light bars from Rigid Industries take up residence all over the truck – front bumper, rear bumper, roof and Surco roof rack. And everywhere there’s a light bar, there’s a GoPro to capture the action to show off to your friends when you’re back from playing around. Inside, things are pretty comfy for a capable off-road truck. The F-150 was delivered to Trent as a Platinum, so it already had some tasty leather seats that feature airbags, heating and cooling. As nice as that would be for the driver, it posed as a bit of a challenge for VanArsdalen. “They are airbag seats, so I can’t officially stitch those at an upholstery shop because I have to have the seam that blows up and that becomes a whole issue,” he explains. “I just gutted out the factory inserts and put those new inserts into the seats. They have cooling and heating in them, so I had to use special foam.” Under the newly trimmed seats sit Kicker subwoofers, three in a row, in a seamless install when the seats are down. The rest of the audio system is also Kicker, with components sitting in sunken speaker pods, which recycle

the factory chrome trim rings, and an OEM radio interface to allow the modifications to happen in the first place. Now, you’re probably realizing that this truck has a ton of stuff to power. On top of audio, lights, two coolers and a fridge, there are also multiple integrated charging stations for both smartphones and GoPros. This is where Reikken stepped in. Of course, their batteries help carry some of the load, but one of their 110 inverters is the real Hercules in this setup. “It’s a reversed plug like an RV has, so you just plug the truck in the 110 and it powers the whole truck and all the accessories,” VanArsdalen says. “It’s all built right into the truck. Even the factory 110 in the truck is powered through the other system.” They left this truck on for three days straight at SEMA and then drove it out after with no problems. Enough said. A.R.E.’s ode to extreme sports did very well at the show. Aside from stealing gazes from show-goers, the F-150 won a Ford Project Excellence Award, as well as a Mother’s Shine Award. The latter of which, from Trent’s words, would have still been awarded to the truck “if the thing was still in primer because of all the details.” This is show truck of the highest caliber. It has the looks, it has the performance, it has the goodies, and now it has the recognition it deserves. All of this came together in five weeks before SEMA. Can you imagine what it would have been if Trent had even another week with it?

hen you build an audiofocused vehicle for show, you better have two things: the sound and the look. These two things are essential to pulling people in. Someone could hear your setup from across the venue and come running over to check it out, or you could grab their gaze as they walk on by. People will take pictures and videos. Soon - one way or another - you’re getting noticed. The engineers and installers at Orion Audio in Miami may have just perfected the art with this

LOAD Jeep Wrangler. It has a presence unlike any other with its fold out “wings,” amp racks and earthshaking performance. It’s almost like a peacock when it’s all folded out and bellowing, attracting the attention of bass heads from all over. According to Edgar Cedeño, the head hauncho at Orion Audio, the Jeep was the best and only choice for what they had planned. “For the kind of build that we wanted to do, it just fit because you can take off the doors, you can take off the roof, you can take almost everything off the car.” Explains Cedeño. “It just fit the vision perfectly.”

The Jeep’s tear-away features were perfect because of what was going to occupy the space. When all was said and done, the Jeep housed two amplifiers per side rack, as well as two on the roof and two inside the rear roofline; all of which are Orion’s newest top-of-the-line offerings: the HCCA series. On the inside, where the rear seats used to be, is an impressive arrangement of power wires, bus bars, crossovers and the five Reikken HO 3209 batteries that help to power this beast. It’s like looking into the command center and seeing where all of the assignments go.

Bass performance is what this build is all about and it has a shocking amount. Four 15-inch XTRPRO subwoofers sit inside the gorgeous, open and mirror-finished box that takes up the Jeep’s trunk. That’s clearly not enough, so the box is lined with XTRPRO XDM104MBF subs, four per side. Ten HCCA tweeters take up residence on the box to seal the deal. But wait, there’s more! The features that you’ve most definitely been drawn to would be the two wings, which swing out on either side of the colossal enclosure. Each one is armed with

four HCCA midrange speakers and one HCCA tweeter for the musical cherry on top. Above all else, the best thing about this Jeep is the fact that it’s a daily driver. You’d think with those speaker wings and amp racks sticking out, it would be stowed, towed, showed, and then stowed again. Everything actually folds up into the back by way of TV stand mounts. The mounting mechanism and swivel heads are perfect for the job. In the words of Cedeño, “You put your soft top up and move on!” “What I like the most about it is the reaction of the people when they see it,” he exclaims.

“When you go to a show and people look at it, there’s just jaws dropping. They’re like, ‘What the hell did these people do?’ Even other brands during CES came over to say that we went over the limit with this Jeep.” Oh yeah, this Jeep was a hit as CES. It probably helped that Orion’s booth was more party than business, and once they demo’d the system on the Wrangler, it was a swamp of people. It shook the hall. Go ahead and search for videos online, but it won’t do as much justice as getting your organs rearranged in person.

“FOR THE KIND OF BUILD THAT WE WANTED TO DO, IT JUST FIT BECAUSE YOU CAN TAKE OFF THE DOORS, YOU CAN TAKE OFF THE ROOF, YOU CAN TAKE ALMOST EVERYTHING OFF THE CAR.” “At CES we put [the volume] halfway once, but we were afraid because the booth next to ours had some glass stands and every time we played music, the glass started shaking really hard,” laughs Cedeño. “We certainly didn’t want to get sued.” So, if half power is enough to worry about breaking your neighbor’s glass, what is full power supposed to be like? The truth is, only four people know because they just had to experience how insane it is. They took it out to the desert where it wouldn’t cause much trouble to let it rip. Cedeño says that’s the first and possibly last time they do it, as there’s no way it would be allowed to play anywhere else. There’s no word on just what kind of output this monster is capable of. Besides a safe place to play, there was one other issue with the build: the weight. When the numbers were crunched, the installers found that they had slapped about 2,500 pounds onto the back of the Wrangler. Next came the fun of finding a suspension that would work.

“We went through five suspensions,” exclaims Cedeño. “The Jeep wasn’t meant to take that kind of weight. Everything kept failing.” Eventually, Orion struck gold with Bilstein, who made up specially valved shocks and custom springs to hold the monumental weight of the system. Adjustable control arms and extended sway bars also lend a hand to sort out the suspension conundrum. Orion wanted it to be a showstopper, but they didn’t want to hide the Jeep’s off-road roots. It sits on some suitable 22-inch TIS wheels, which are wrapped in some seriously meaty 37x12.5 Nitto Trail Grapplers. Proline did a serious solid and manufactured some custom cast iron bumpers and custom fenders, just for the Wrangler. The Jeep is always poised to pull in an audience. When it’s not drawing in all in attendance at a show, it’s getting some love from the authorities as well. “We had four police cars stop us one day,” Cedeño cracks up. “After they took pictures with the Jeep, they let us go!” On the street, on exhibition, wherever it goes, whether good or bad, this Jeep reigns supreme in the attention-grabbing department. Orion is hoping to get out to a few more shows this season like Slamology, a couple NOPI gatherings, and eventually SEMA. Don’t worry because, whether it’s your eyes or ears, you’ll find it.
