Remembering Larry

A

As people age, they tend to accumulate many personal effects. By the end of one’s life, these accumulated items can be extensive and deeply meaningful. As photographers, we have something unique to offer clients that can help them deal with a loved one’s belongings after they have passed. This service is separate from the usual photographs or digital records of a person’s life: it focuses on the physical artifacts they leave behind.

People keep items that remind them of past events or relationships, but ultimately, the importance lies not in the items themselves but in the memories they evoke. The object’s value is tied to the memory it represents. As photographers, we can help families preserve the meaning of these items through digital documentation, so people can feel free to let go of the material objects because now they have a photographic record and a connection to the memory of their loved one

As we get older, elderly family members pass, and the sheer volume of accumulated belongings can be overwhelming. I discovered the solution introduced here through personal experience, and in conversations with professionals who help families organize possessions after the loss of a loved one It’s clear this is an increasingly valuable service in a world filled with material clutter.

Offering a service to digitally document someone's belongings for posterity is a niche, but increasingly relevant offering. This type of service is often referred to as personal or family archiving or heirloom documentation

It involves photographing personal possessions, heirlooms, and other items of sentimental or historical value.

A Collection of Small Things

I discovered the need for this service a few years ago when my wife’s uncle, Larry, passed away Larry was an incredible person with good taste (mostly), and during his late 60s and 70s, he traveled to many far-flung parts of the world. He acquired an extensive collection of items during his travels some valuable, others simple trinkets.

For Larry, these items represented mementos, memories, and valued objects from his journeys. After his passing, however, their monetary value was unclear, and without the stories behind them, their personal significance was lost We were left to figure out what to do with his collection boxes and boxes of unlabeled items. The solution we came up with was to create a digital gallery of his mementoes.

As a photographer, I often provide clients with access to images via online galleries Just as we restore and preserve photographs, we can also record the physical artifacts of a person’s life. There are four key reasons to offer this type of service:

1. Preservation of Memories: Digital documentation allows families to preserve the memories behind important items like furniture, artwork, clothing, and keepsakes

2 Estate Planning and Insurance: Some people document belongings for practical reasons, like estate planning or insurance claims. A detailed digital archive helps in case of loss, theft, or damage.

3 Historical or Genealogical Projects: Families may contribute to historical records by documenting personal stories, letters, and memorabilia.

4. Downsizing and Legacy Planning: As people downsize or plan their legacy, this service helps preserve memories without the need to hold onto physical items.

Photographers offering this service typically combine their photography with organizational skills, providing clients with high-quality images, digital catalogs, or albums. If you’re thinking about adding this to your photography business, it aligns well with creating lasting memories through imagery.

The Approach

To document items effectively, you can use a combination of product photography and archival photography Product photography techniques, designed to sell items, can be adapted to this context by focusing on accurate representation. Archival photography focuses on the technical accuracy of an item’s condition, ensuring that details are preserved for future reference

When I documented Larry’s belongings, I photographed each item from multiple perspectives to provide a complete record. The resulting images helped us determine which items had value and what to keep, give away, or sell.

Equipment and Setup

For smaller items, I use a portable photography lightbox While a full studio setup is overkill for small objects, a lightbox offers a compact and flexible solution. I used a 24-inch portable lighting cube, which has reflective walls, LED lights, and various background options. It’s compact but accommodates most items, from small trinkets to larger objects (still smaller than about 30” in one direction).

“these items represented mementos, memories, and valued objects from his journeys ”

I used a tripod and a small turntable to capture each item from different angles, ensuring thorough documentation. A good depth of field (around f/8) allowed me to keep the entire object in focus. Proper lighting is key as shadows detract from the details, so I used a diffusion panel to create even lighting.

Labeling and Organizing

As part of the process, I labeled each item to keep track of what was photographed. I labeled boxes with letters and items with numbers, photographing the label first to ensure everything was organized. This method is especially useful when dealing with a large volume of items.

Delivering the Results

Once I had completed the photography, I adjusted the images for white balance and ran a batch process to streamline editing. Deliverables can include either a custom website or a proofing gallery for the family to view and share the images. For me, it is generally easier to simply set up a proofing gallery but that is a personal preference for the photographer.

Photographing meaningful objects is a way to preserve memories without holding onto the physical items. For families dealing with the loss of a loved one, this service offers a way to keep the connection alive without overwhelming them with belongings Connecting with agencies that assist families during these transitions can provide photographers with access to an important and meaningful niche

Parent has been a Nikon user since the 1970s and loves to highlight the details of the insects’ texture, colour and symmetry in his macro portraits of these tiny creatures His images have been published around the globe and featured on Caters News, Yahoo News, Nikon Owner Magazine, My Modern Met, The Montreal Gazette, McLean’s, Royal Ontario Museum’s Biodiversity Centre in Toronto, National Wildlife Federation, Trail Canada, La Métropole, and the Ottawa Museum of Nature As well as being an accredited member of the PPOC since 2019, he is also a Fellow Member of the Royal Geographical Society UK, Fellow Member of the Canadian Royal Geographical Society, Fellow Member of the Royal Geographical Society Hong-Kong, Etymology Society Canada and a Nikon Professional Service Canada Member.

In 2023, Paul published “Insect Symphony: A Comprehensive Guide to Insect Macro Photography” where he not only illustrates the techniques he uses to capture he visually stunning images but also invites readers to appreciate the beauty, at all scale of the natural world.

GM - Please tell us a little about yourself and why you like photographing insects

I am a Canadian insect photographer with a passion for capturing the often-overlooked world of insects I've always been fascinated by nature, and over time, I developed a deep curiosity about the tiny creatures that play such a vital role in our ecosystems My journey into insect photography began as a way to share my fascination with these incredible creatures, their unique behaviours, and intricate details that most people never notice.

What draws me to photographing insects is the challenge and reward of revealing their beauty in a way that captures their essence. Insects are often misunderstood or dismissed, but when observed closely, they’re astonishingly complex and visually stunning Each species has its own personality and unique features, from the delicate wings of a butterfly to the armoured body of a beetle It’s these moments of connection with such small, intricate creatures that fuel my work and keep me inspired

GM - Why is it fun and interesting to photograph insects?

Photographing insects is incredibly interesting and challenging for several reasons First, it’s like entering a whole new world one that’s right under our noses but often goes unnoticed. Insects are so diverse and complex, with each species having its own unique traits and behaviours. It's like capturing a moment from an alien universe, but it's all happening right here in nature.

What makes it especially exciting is the challenge of working with such small, fastmoving subjects Insects don’t stand still for long, so getting the perfect shot requires patience, precision, and a keen eye for detail There’s an element of surprise as well every time I go out, I never know what I might find. A hidden moth resting on a leaf, a dragonfly hovering in the sun, or a beetle navigating its tiny world—every encounter feels like a discovery.

GM - When did you get started with this type of macro photography?

I first got into macro photography about 20 years ago, though my fascination with insects and nature goes back much further. I’ve always been drawn to the natural world, and I remember as a child spending hours outside, observing the tiny creatures that often went unnoticed I started with general nature photography, but I quickly became captivated by the challenge of photographing small, intricate details up close I realized that insects, in particular, offered an incredible opportunity to explore both the art and science of photography. Their tiny, often hidden features delicate wings, shimmering colours, and fascinating behaviours—became a subject I was eager to capture in a way that allowed others to see them in a new light.

GM - What’s the biggest challenge with photographing insects?

One of the biggest challenges in photographing insects is their movement and size Insects are small, fast, and often unpredictable, which makes it tricky to get sharp, well-composed shots They don’t stay in one place for long, so timing and patience are key. You can spend a lot of time waiting for the right moment when an insect settles just right, only for it to fly off or move in a completely different direction. Another challenge is the lighting. Insects are often found in areas with dappled light, under the canopy of trees or in dense foliage, which can make it difficult to get consistent, flattering lighting Using the right equipment, like macro lenses and portable lighting setups, can help, but it often requires a lot of trial and error to get everything right

GM - What gear do you recommend for photographing insects?

A good quality macro lens is the foundation of insect photography I use a Nikon 200mm f/4 Micro lens, as it offers excellent sharpness and the ability to photograph small subjects at 1:1 magnification. This allows you to get incredibly close to the insect while maintaining detail and clarity, and a good distance from the insect A sturdy tripod or monopod is also crucial for achieving sharp, focused images, particularly in low-light conditions or when you're shooting at small apertures for more depth of field. A tripod also helps when you're trying to keep your camera steady while photographing small movements or behavior. If you’re working in a more confined or awkward space, a monopod can be more flexible Lastly, insects are often found in low-light environments, such as under tree canopies or in the shade, so having a reliable light source is vital I use a flash or a ring light to provide consistent and controlled lighting. A flash diffuser can help soften the light to prevent harsh shadows and highlights, giving a more natural look For a more controlled setup, I also recommend using a speed-light with a soft-box or diffuser, I use a R1C1 Speed-light system

GM-Canyoutellusaboutyourdigitaldarkroomprocessafteryougettheimagesoffyourcamera?

Once I’ve selected the best images, I start making basic adjustments I typically begin with exposure adjustments, correcting any overexposure or underexposure issues After that I’ll then adjust the white balance to ensure the colors are true to life, especially since insects can have such vivid, intricate colours that need to be represented accurately In macro photography, where you’re often shooting at very small apertures and high magnifications, noise can sometimes become an issue, particularly in low light I apply noise reduction to smooth out any graininess in the image. At the same time, I sharpen the image to highlight the fine details, especially around the insect’s features like eyes, wings, and legs.

GM-Whatdoyoubelievemakesyourimagessuccessful?

Insect photography is all about capturing the fine details that often go unnoticed in everyday life. I strive to showcase the intricate textures, patterns, and colours that define each species. Whether it’s the delicate veins in a butterfly’s wings or the minute hairs on a bee’s legs, I focus on bringing these details to life, allowing viewers to see insects in a way they might not have before.I believe that good composition is essential for any successful image By carefully considering the framing, background, and the placement of the insect within the shot, I aim to create a visually appealing image that draws the viewer’s eye to the subject Insects are often found in complex environments, so I work to balance their placement within the context of nature without overwhelming the viewer with distractions

GM-Doyouthinkthatwildlife photography-inthiscaseinsectshasaneffectonconservation?

Absolutely, I believe that wildlife photography, including insect photography, can have a significant impact on conservation. Photography has the unique ability to bring attention to creatures that are often overlooked or misunderstood, and insects are a prime example Most people don’t realize the critical roles insects play in ecosystems pollinating plants, breaking down organic matter, and supporting biodiversity Through photography, I aim to highlight their beauty, complexity, and importance, helping to shift public perception and foster a greater appreciation for them.

GM-Isthereaninsectthatyoucouldhappily photographoverandoveragain?

Yes, there are a few insects I could happily photograph over and over again, but if I had to choose one, it would probably be the dragonfly. There's something endlessly fascinating about them—both in terms of their appearance and behaviour. Dragonflies have incredible colours and intricate wing patterns that make them a joy to photograph Their iridescent wings shimmer in the light, and they have such a delicate yet powerful presence I’m always amazed by their level of detail, from the texture on their wings to the sharpness of their eyes Each species has its own unique characteristics, so there’s always something new to capture, even if I’ve photographed them many times before.

GM-Doyouhaveawishlistforaninsectto photograph?Maybeaspeciesthathaseludedyouto date?

There are some extraordinary insects that would definitely make a photographer's wish list, especially ones that are rare or uniquely beautiful I can think of five species I’d include on my wish list The first would be the Orchid Mantis (Hymenopus coronatus) found in Southeast Asia, Malaysia and Indonesia. The mantis is famous for its stunning camouflage that mimics orchid flowers, it’s a dream subject for macro photography. My second choice would be the Glasswing Butterfly (Greta oto) which is found primarily in Mexico, Panama and Columbia. This butterfly is special because of Its transparent wings which make it a fascinating challenge to capture with light and texture The Giant Hercules Beetle (Dynastes hercules) is a majestic insect that is found from Southern Mexico to Bolivia The males have horns and it is a symbol of strength and rarity This beetle would be very interesting to photograph Another species on my wish list would be the Peacock Spider (Maratus volans) of Australia because these tiny spiders have amazing vibrant colours and a unique courtship dance which would make them an exciting addition to a portfolio. My final choice would be the Jewel Wasp (Ampulex compressa) which is known for its metallic sheen and unique life cycle, it’s a mix of beauty and intrigue

Our volunteers in the booth this year included Jennifer Gilbert, David McCammon, Alph Leydon, Jenn Grachow, Brian Ackin, Dee Potter, Nelli Savelieva. The PPOC representatives probably talked to or were heard by about 300 people and around 100 people scanned the code to enter a draw for a one year annual membership Nearly 5000 people explored the concourse that was jam-packed with all the latest gear from all the major international brands like Canon, Sony, Nikon and Fujifilm, in addition to over 75 engaging presentations by creators from a wide range of genera. The entire event highlighted a passion for imaging, the fun of getting your hands on with some new gear, learning from the pros as well as meeting some of the pros and a whole host of photo enthusiasts from around the region.

ROBERT COPPARD’S MORE THAN EXHIBIT LAUNCH A HUGE SUCCESS AT YMM

The final event in the 2024 YMM Digital Art Exhibit series at Fort McMurray International Airport was a great success Held on November 1, the event showcased the photographic talents of Robert Coppard, whose exhibit More Than captivated the audience with stunning landscape and wildlife imagery from the Wood Buffalo region.

The launch, hosted in the airport’s Observation Area, featured refreshments by Earls Kitchen + Bar and live music from Dan Gillies, creating a lively and warm atmosphere Guests had the unique opportunity to meet Coppard and learn about his personal journey, which began seven years ago when he first picked up a camera to manage stress. “I never thought in my wildest dreams I’d have an exhibit,” Coppard shared during the event.

In an inspiring gesture, Coppard donated all exhibit prints to the Ihkapaska Indigenous Wellness Collective, reinforcing his commitment to the local community The first 40 attendees were also treated to complimentary 4x6 prints from the artist, adding a personal touch to an already special evening

The exhibit, part of a three-month rotation at the airport, will continue to engage travelers and visitors through Coppard’s visual storytelling. As the final showcase in the 2024 series, it highlighted both the artist’s journey and the beauty of the region, leaving a lasting impact on those in attendance

This launch reflected not only the power of art but also the importance of community connections, making it a fitting conclusion to YMM’s successful 2024 digital exhibit series. The airport’s ongoing efforts to support and promote local artists ensure that events like this will continue to enrich the cultural landscape of the region
