Creative Vision From Darkness

Light is a crucial element in photography - chased often, discussed and analyzed, and sometimes cursed when it doesn't cooperate. When we lose light, photography becomes more challenging. But darkness brings a new world that can spark a completely different way of thinking and seeing.

Monika's photography career began in the dark with low light indoor environments while shooting concerts and events. Her transition into the outdoors and natural light was motivated by starlight, aurora borealis, and the Milky Way. It was the lack of light and wondrous night skies of Alberta that influenced and directed her nature photography journey. Monika will discuss her creative vision at night, and how it translated to and influenced her imagery and approach when the sun overtakes the stars.

Irene Rudnyk

Irene says “I picked up a camera around 13 years ago and regularly photographed my main subject, my sister Orysia. Since then, I have been captivated and inspired by feminine beauty. I try to capture the subject in front of my camera in a more creative, romantic manner. I don't strive for realism, but rather a visually pleasing and feminine version of the finished product. While the subject is always the focus of my images, I truly put a lot of thought into the environment and details of the photo. I like to have full creative control over the photoshoot, so I often act as a stylist or creative director and sometimes assume the role of the makeup and hair artist.

Irene Rudnyk

I never was and never will be an overly technical photographer, and I love to show how I achieve my images with just simple techniques and budget setups suited for both professionals and beginners. I enjoy helping other photographers and started a YouTube channel to share my creative projects and help other photographers with tutorials, behind the scenes and DIY videos. I share my art with over 830k subscribers in the hopes of inspiring others and to spread some beauty into the world.”

Pratik Naik

This sneak peeks into the world of high-end retouching will show you how to edit your work and the best practices when working with a professional retoucher. While Pratik Naik's expertise is fashion and beauty retouching, the presentation will include many tips that can be transferred to any genre of photography. Pratik will be sure to accommodate the diversity of the crowd.

During the presentation, we will take a look at retouching from a professional retoucher's point of view: we'll discuss the history and ethics of retouching, considerations to help make retouching your work more accessible, and the best way to set up your workflow when working with a professional retoucher.

Using both landscape and fashion images, we'll consider what adjustments and tools can be used on RAW files to create a solid base before taking them into Photoshop. Once that preparation is complete, we'll move into Photoshop for more in-depth work.

Pratik will demonstrate a traditional workflow in Photoshop using portrait images. The first step is to set a game plan for portrait retouching: note aspects to consider before attempting to edit photographs, discuss layer structure, and then go through each layering step by step, highlighting which tools are best paired with which layers to produce a pleasing result.

In the end, you will come away with a better understanding of the world of retouching, the tools that could benefit photographers, how to improve your retouching workflow, and how to set yourself up for success when working with a professional retoucher.
