a note from
R.W. Grand Master S. Eugene Herritt
“
EACH MASONIC CHARITY TELLS ITS OWN STORY OF CHANGED LIVES, and they are only possible because of people like you. Each charity demonstrates a different mission, but all have positively impacted countless lives in 2017. The Masonic Library and Museum of Pennsylvania inspired and educated others on Pennsylvania Freemasonry’s history.
My husband was a Mason and a born giver, and he believed in supporting good causes. Today, I support the Masonic Charities in his memory. If you have any kind of money, you want it to go to good use, because, for most people, it doesn’t come easy. With the Masonic Charities, you just know your money is going to where it’s needed most and will make someone’s life better. My hope is that my gifts change someone’s life, whether that’s the life of a child or a senior like myself. It should be important to everyone to leave a legacy that other people can benefit from. Take it from a 99-year-old.” -MAGGIE HEADLAND, annual Masonic Charities Fund donor, Masonic widow and Order of the Eastern Star member
The Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation provided education, programming and scholarship opportunities to develop leaders of the next generation. The Masonic Children’s Home gave a safe, stable home and opportunities to grow, explore interests and learn life values to 40 youth in need. Individual tutoring sessions and college scholarships allowed children to reach for the stars, thanks to donor support. The Masonic Villages provided care and security to seniors, regardless of their health or ability to pay. More than 2,800 residents discovered and rediscovered their passions within a loving environment. The Masonic Charities Fund offered help at a local, national and international level for Masonic and non-Masonic projects alike. In life, it matters not what we receive, but what we give. Thank you for supporting your favorite Masonic Charities in 2017 and for keeping Pennsylvania Freemasonry and its philanthropic goals alive and well. Now, it’s time to read the stories of those who have been touched by your generosity and foresight. *If you are new to Freemasonry, it is important for you to understand what we, as Brothers, can do together to change the lives of those in need. Feel free to share this Annual Report with those who may not fully understand Pennsylvania Freemasonry and our five various charities that impact those of all ages. Your membership, leadership and commitment is sincerely valued. Together, we can make the world a better place.

one-of-a-kind artwork, historic book and rare document inside the Masonic Library and Museum radiated history for its visitors to learn from and enjoy.
The Masonic Library and Museum has become a national icon where people can visit to understand and appreciate the past and present of Pennsylvania Freemasonry. In 2017, the Masonic Library and Museum welcomed students, academics, artists, public visitors and Masons from across the world. Each unique room, hand-crafted piece of furniture,
In 2017, the Masonic Library celebrated 200 years of existence. Thanks to people like you, the library now holds a record 75,000 volumes and 30,000 archival manuscripts and collections on the histories of Freemasonry, philosophy, religion, architecture and more. membership books. As more and more people access these historic documents, oils, dirt and debris from handling will degrade the pieces over time. Hopefully, these treasures will be fully protected and never lost. In 2017, 27 Masonic lodges met inside the building, while Masons, organizations and individuals held fine events in the renovated ballroom (pictured right). Your support allowed the Library and Museum to astonish 14,040 visitors in 2017, the highest number in recent years.

“I have been going to the Masonic Temple since my early days in DeMolay, and I always find or learn something new about it at every visit. In my opinion, it is one of the wonders of the Masonic world. From those who designed and built it, to everyone who has helped care for it over all the years, I say thank you. This is part of the legacy of Freemasonry in Pennsylvania, and we’re all proud of it.”
“A visit to Philadelphia is not complete without a guided tour of the Masonic Temple. This is truly one of the most lavish and ornately decorated buildings I have ever seen. Everything is immaculately maintained. Seeing George Washington’s Masonic apron was a nice surprise. If you are on an art tour of Philly, this is a must see.” - A TRIPADVISOR ONLINE REVIEW ®

THE PENNSYLVANIA MASONIC YOUTH FOUNDATION
You helped YOUTH BUILD CONFIDENCE
Brianna Geiner and Andi Collman
YOUR GIFTS HELPED YOUTH BECOME LEADERS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. In 2017, with support from contributors like you, members of the youth groups supported by the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation embraced the importance of charitable outreach, leadership skills, academics and friendship. Annual programming and antibullying workshops taught youth to be contributing members of their communities and lead by example. 6

Masonic youth programs also taught young adults to look beyond themselves and into the lives of those in need. DeMolay, Job’s Daughters and Rainbow Girls volunteered and raised money for charities including Hearing Impaired Kids Endowment, Children’s Dyslexia Centers, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, the Masonic Villages and more in 2017. Together, supporters and adult volunteers had a large impact on student academic achievement by mentoring, training, educating
and supporting youth outside schoolhouse doors. This improved the motivation and concentration levels of youth while encouraging them to pursue advanced education. In 2017, $198,750 from caring individuals like yourself was invested in 54 hardworking youth through scholarship opportunities, so they could have the chance to attend college. Nearly $1.5 million has been awarded to deserving Masonic youth since the creation of the Educational Endowment Fund in 1989.

“Jobies has taught me the meaning of giving back and the importance of stepping outside of myself. When I joined at 10 years old, I was shy. Jobies helped me make friends and grow as a person. Now, I can see the younger girls doing the same. The service projects we do are great because we can see our hard work directly benefiting other people.” -BRIANNA GEINER, member of Job’s Daughters (pictured on p. 6, left)
“Through Jobies, I’ve built relationships and gained confidence. I learned I can do anything I put my mind to, which helped me when I was applying for college. I’ve held several positions and have mentored younger girls. Now that I’m older, Jobies is benefiting me in additional ways, including scholarships and networking opportunities for future internships and jobs.”

MASONIC CHILDREN’S HOME
You helped SAVE THE LIVES OF CHILDREN
Bridget and Autumn
YOU GAVE CHILDREN A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE. Thanks to you, the Masonic Children’s Home continued to provide for kids in need in 2017. These are children who were raised in unstable environments and, in many cases, had lost all hope. In 2017, five new children came to the children’s home. Many of these children, as well as current children, required medical and dental care, academic assistance and needed items like clothing, bedding, school supplies and more. 8
MasonicCharitiesPA.org
Education is one of the primary factors that determines someone’s financial success. Children who come from troubled social or economic environments are less likely to do well in school. Together, children’s home donors did something about this. Thanks to you, the Resource Center improved the kids’ learning abilities and computer skills by providing a calm and quiet place to study and individualized tutoring sessions. Twenty-two children earned a spot on their schools’ honor roll in 2017,
and three seniors were accepted into post-secondary degree programs. Also, thanks to you, the children’s home underwent its first major renovation in 24 years. Half of the children’s cottages were renovated so each child would have his or her own bedroom, and shared spaces were redesigned to be more open and modern (additional cottages will be renovated in 2018). The Resource Center was also renovated and now includes a multi-media room for group activities and learning.

“When I first came to the children’s home, I was scared because I was away from my family, but now I really like it here. I have friends I can play with and people I can talk to. All the girls I live with are like a mix of friends and sisters. I like the house parents here, too, because if you ever make a mistake, they can help you fix it.” -BRIDGET, children’s home resident (pictured on p. 8, left)
“I came to the children’s home when I was 10. At that time, I didn’t have nice things. I never got new clothes or things that I needed. I would like to thank everyone who gives to the children’s home because they don’t know how much they’ve changed my life. I have learned how to be a leader and express myself. I have wonderful memories to take with me in life, and I hope to make everyone proud.”

In 2017, with the continued decline in government reimbursements for health care services, the futures of many aging adults were counting on caring donors. Statewide, more than 50 percent of nursing care residents are unable to afford the care they receive. In 2017, revenuegenerating opportunities were expanded at Masonic Villages to
Across Pennsylvania, Masonic Villages has been refining resident and community care for 146 years through various services including hospice, home care, rehabilitation, adult daily living care, child care, volunteer opportunities and consulting. “We’ve lived at Masonic Village for 19 years. We met here and were married here. We love the care we receive and the security. The people are nice, and there are excellent medical services. When you give to Masonic Village, you give to a worthwhile cause. It is one of the few fraternal organizations that cares for its members, their families and the community regardless of financial circumstances.” -ART AND RUTH LININGTON, residents (pictured on p. 10)
“There’s nowhere else in the world like this place. It’s a place that will take care of you for the rest of your life. My kids, who live hours away, feel good knowing I’m getting everything I need. My husband was seven years older than me, and he wanted to make sure I would get care after he passed. We chose Masonic Village with that in mind. Staff here are wonderful. They’re eager to help and are polite. They’re just like family.” -EVELYN CRANE, resident (pictured above)
