Trust Busting in the Progressive Era
During the Progressive Era, the public was alarmed at the power of large corporations.
Presidents Roosevelt, Taft and Wilson acted to dismantle the trusts in railroads, meat packing and oil and to reform banking and taxation.
The 1911 Triangle Fire and Reform
The working conditions came to a head in the
triangle shirtwaist fire and the Bread and Roses strike. Many were killed in the fire, which demonstrated the poor conditions of the industrial workers and led to new labor laws.

Theodore Roosevelt: Conservationist
President Theodore Roosevelt was instrumental in creating our national parks, wildlife preserves and national forests. We discuss the conservation movement of the 19th century and its early initiatives to provide for federal protection of the wilderness.
Urban Reform: How the Other Half Lives
The reformers become more aware of the troubles in larger cities and started the process of urban planning. There was new thinking about poverty and the establishment of settlement houses and social work to aid the urban poor.

Over There: A World Safe for Democracy
As the era ends, we discuss the events leading the United States into World War I, and how initially the policy of neutrality went into preparedness and then intervention amid conflicting public sentiments. We’ll also see the after-effects of the war on U.S. foreign policy.
Upheaval and the End of an Era
The end of World War I was a very disruptive time, with a wave of Labor strikes, anti-radical hysteria and race riots. Once again, we went into a renewed isolationism and conservatism during the roaring 20s.
