Mrs. Vanderbilt’s Gala Ball

We examine the vast country estates and European style of living that the aristocrats of the new Gilded Age with their nouveau riche money were able to provide.

Populist Revolt: The Grangers and Coxey

We will explore the People’s Party, a political party that demanded major government changes after the injustices and oppression that caused reforms in the Progressive Era.

MARCH 10

We see an end to the policy of isolationism and start becoming involved in global affairs. We’ll see a case for the events that led up to the Spanish-American War and the building of the Panama CanaI.

At this time, there were more public roles for women and emerging ideas about women’s rights. We will talk about

the suffrage movement and its embattled crusade to gain votes for women.

MARCH 17

Trust Busting in the Progressive Era

During the Progressive Era, the public was alarmed at the power of large corporations.

Presidents Roosevelt, Taft and Wilson acted to dismantle the trusts in railroads, meat packing and oil and to reform banking and taxation.

The 1911 Triangle Fire and Reform

The working conditions came to a head in the

triangle shirtwaist fire and the Bread and Roses strike. Many were killed in the fire, which demonstrated the poor conditions of the industrial workers and led to new labor laws.

Upheaval and the End of an Era

The end of World War I was a very disruptive time, with a wave of Labor strikes, anti-radical hysteria and race riots. Once again, we went into a renewed isolationism and conservatism during the roaring 20s.
