NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATION
Achieving an Excellent Dining Experience Greg Thomas, director of food services
restaurant provides a full-service menu, while the café features a self-service garden bar, buffet and action cook-to-order stations. The tavern offers wine, specialty cocktails, beers on tap and fresh appetizers. Starting in May and ending in October, dining will also be available on the new terrace (see page 16). The space will also be ideal for other activities, such as our Thirsty Thursdays and live entertainment.
As we serve more than a million meals per year, the Food Services Department is constantly assessing ways to improve the resident dining experience. In 2017, we had many new, exciting changes to our program, and we are looking forward to the future. Our Team Food Services leadership, dietitians and culinary and dining services teams work together to provide the most immersive and comfortable dining experience for you and your guests. Our leadership team includes (l-r in photo): Dolly Junk, Freemasons dining services manager; Shawn Kaley, culinary services manager; Michael Alampi, dining services manager; myself; Christine Wagner, Masonic Health Care Center dining services manager; Marilyn Howell, nutrition services manager; and Sarah Keefer, senior administrative assistant. Over the last few years, research and practice has helped our team prioritize and improve our services. We have taken a look at the dining experiences at other local retirement communities as well as shared our venues and service styles with others. Your experience as residents is more important than research, so we’ve also partnered with Masonic Village’s Food Advisory Council. Current members of the council are residents on the meal plan from across campus who share with us your comments, concerns and questions about dining. If you have an experience, new idea or recipe to share, please do so, as we value your thoughts and input. New Dining Venues

Grand Lodge Hall underwent renovations and updates in 2017 and now offers beautiful new spaces to gather and dine. These include the Cornerstone Restaurant, Café 1911 and the Goose and Gridiron Tavern. The
We appreciate the opinions and suggestions that were shared in response to the reopening of Three Loaves Café. The service style has changed from waited full service to counter service. It has been a big change for everyone, but, as we listen, improvements are being made, including additions to the menu, and the number of customers has been growing. Three Loaves Café’s former concept and style of service has been instituted in Café 1911 with additional perks for you and your guests. Meal Plan Member Benefits This year, we are creating benefits for residents who are on a meal plan. Starting this Mother’s Day, residents who have a meal plan are able to make reservations for special events 48 hours prior to the campus’ opening day of reservations. This ensures first access to prime seating times and dining locations. Look for more information on the growing list of benefits that will be offered to meal plan members in the future. Elements of Dining The dining experience can include everything from atmosphere, staff appearance, service, menu, table and food presentation and more. We have been working hard to ensure all 350 Food Services staff members understand how they can improve your dining experience by providing training sessions on the nine elements of dining. We have also developed a more comprehensive version of the traditional comment card, which can be found on the tables of each campus restaurant to enable you to provide specific feedback to help us improve. To give you plenty of options, we’ve also ensured each restaurant and café on campus has a range of menu and service options. At each one of our venues, allergy restrictions and food preferences are taken into careful consideration and will be accommodated. Your experience is important to us, and we enjoy serving you and your guests!
