Allentown Band’s Patriotic Concert

Hurricane Agnes - 50 Years After Catastrophe

Brossman Ballroom

Keystone Room

SATURDAY, JULY 2, 2 – 4 P.M. The Allentown Band, America’s oldest concert band founded in 1828, has kept alive the tradition of American Band concerts. The band’s talented musicians, under the direction of Ronald Demkee, share one common goal: to create and preserve concert band music at a level of excellence rarely heard from a community band. The Allentown Band’s “Sousa style” makes the group a favorite at concert venues, city parks, church picnics and university commencements. The band has made four European concert tours, played at New York’s Carnegie Hall, is heard regularly on Philadelphia’s public radio station and performed for Sydney, Australia’s program called “Music That’s Band.”

WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 2 P.M.

Anyone who lived in Pennsylvania remembers 1972's Hurricane Agnes. For many, the storm and floods were a life-changing traumatic experience. Gary Letcher, author of just-published “Bold Forecast – The Hurricane Agnes Deluge,” will remember those days with stories, pictures, video and even music. Residents will be encouraged to relate their own experiences. Mr. Letcher will host a book-signing after the presentation.

Encore Band Summer Concert

SATURDAY, JULY 9, 2 P.M. Deike Auditorium

The Encore Band presents a concert full of your favorite patriotic marches to celebrate the ideals that make America, America! The Encore Band consists of Masonic Village residents and local community members under the direction of Dennis Karafala.

A Historian at the Movies Fish-For-Free Day

SUNDAY, JULY 3, 1 – 4 P.M. Serpentine Pond

4

How long has it been since you have picked up a fishing rod? No fishing license? No problem. Each year, the PA Fish Commission has Fish-ForFree Days when no licenses are needed. Join us at the pond on Serpentine Drive for some catch-andrelease fishing. Bring your own fishing tackle if you have it. Bait and limited tackle will be available. You will catch panfish and maybe bass. Experienced anglers will be ready to help. Limited snacks and water will be provided. Come and go as you want, or just stop by to cheer on your favorite angler.

MONDAYS, JULY 11, 18 AND 25; AUG. 1, 8 AND 15, 1 – 2:30 P.M. Life Long Learning Center

Have you ever wondered about the historical accuracy of the great epic films of Ancient Rome? Are historical Romans, such as Nero or Claudius, depicted as they really were? Did the critical events portrayed in the films actually happen? How much of the spectacle was invented for the film audience? A professional historian separates out the fictional from the actual in films such as “Ben Hur,” “Spartacus” and “I, Claudius.” Resident Bill Decker will facilitate a series of DVD lectures and group discussions on this topic.

What Are the Chances? Probability Made Clear

MONDAYS, JULY 11, 18 AND 25; AUG 1, 8 AND 15, 2:30 – 4 P.M. Life Long Learning Center

Life has many surprises for us. While most of the surprises appear to be random and unpredictable, we try to anticipate them and prepare for them. When we leave the house in the morning, we check the weather forecast and take an umbrella if the probability of rain is high. Or, if we are playing a card game, we either draw a card or pass based on what we see as the possibility of improving our hand. Resident Bill Decker will facilitate a series of DVD lectures and group discussions to give us a basic understanding of the ways in which we can calculate the probability of making the right choices.

Physical Therapy Lecture Series: Incontinence Rehab TUESDAY, JULY 12, 10:30 A.M. GLH Solarium

We know this is not a topic anyone wants to discuss, but studies have shown more than 51% of adults over the age of 65 suffer from some form of incontinence. There is good news: urinary incontinence isn’t something your loved one should simply accept or live with. In fact, there are many effective ways to treat incontinence, regardless of its cause. Masonic Village is fortunate to have a team of occupational and physical therapists trained to deal with this issue. Please join us to learn more about the causes, types, treatment options and more. This informative discussion will be repeated on Monday, July 25, at 10:30 a.m., in the Keystone Room.

Mind Over Matter

TUESDAY, JULY 12, 1 P.M. Life Long Learning Center

Learn about the meaning and benefits of mindfulness to help relieve stress. Mindfulness meditation, meditation techniques and centering practice will be reviewed. Please pre-register by calling 717-361-5699.

Avoiding Scams

Have you ever been a victim of a scam or think you may have been a victim? This presentation will provide information on current scams and how you can avoid being a victim. Come and learn about the top six scams targeted toward older adults, and get some practical tips on how to identify, avoid and report a scam.

Mortality of Presidents Throughout History

THURSDAY, JULY 14, 10:30 A.M.

Keystone Room

U.S. Presidents have had many different ailments, including some that remained secret for years after their terms ended. The health and wellbeing of Presidents Calvin Coolidge, Dwight Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan will be explored. Presented by residents Walt and Margie Cook.

American Tales and Legends THURSDAY, JULY 14, 2 P.M.

Deike Auditorium and Channel 956

The legends of “Paul Revere’s Ride” and “Casey at the Bat” still resonate. Those tales deserve to be retold, as do many less familiar tales that help define the American experience. Stories from New York, the Pine Barrens, Tennessee, Oregon, California and Alaska provide snapshots of life in those areas. Join Storyteller Dennis Strain as he explores these rich experiences. 5
