Physical Therapy Lecture Series: Memory Support/ Medication Management TUESDAY, MARCH 8, 10:30 A.M. GLH Solarium
Do you find yourself having trouble remembering to take medication, which medication to take, what day/time it is or numerous other things that we may forget during the day? Is this normal aging or a sign of a more significant issue? This is a topic no one wants to talk about, but it’s vital to maintaining independence and safety. The Outpatient Rehabilitation Department has experts who can assist in these areas. Join us for a meeting with our Outpatient Occupational Therapist and Speech and Language Pathologist, where they will discuss ways our team can support you or your loved one. This program will be repeated on Monday, March 28, at 10:30 a.m., in the Keystone Room.
Courageous Presidential Decisions
The Knotwork Band FRIDAY, MARCH 11, 7 P.M.
Deike Auditorium & Channel 956
Like Celtic knotwork, this trio is an intricate whole formed by simple individual lines utilizing the talents of the band members, which are interwoven to form each piece of music. This trio performs Celtic folk music from Ireland, Scotland, England and Brittany, as well as American and World music with ties to Celtic folk music, either musically or historically.
Irish Folk Traditions
MONDAY, MARCH 14, 2 P.M.
Deike Auditorium and Channel 956
Ireland has a rich tradition of tales that warmed its long winter nights: fairy tales that haunt, leprechaun tales that delight, wonder tales that teach and amuse and ancient myths that rend the heart. This performance samples each tradition, in anticipation of St. Patrick’s Day. Performed by resident Dennis Strain.
THURSDAY, MARCH 10, 10 A.M. Keystone Room
Six courageous Presidential decisions will be explored. These controversial decisions sometimes hurt the president and their party but were good for the United States. For example, when President Truman fired MacArthur. Program is presented by Masonic Village resident historians Walt and Margie Cook.
The Films of Stanley Donen
Korean War: Home Front
Patton Campus, Williamson Multimedia Room $25
Keystone Room
FRIDAYS, MARCH 11 – APRIL 8
Stanley Donen, a director and choreographer, was one of the most influential directors of movie musicals in the 1940s and ’50s. He began his career in the stage chorus of Pal Joey (1940), where he met Gene Kelly, starting a long collaboration with the dancer. He later directed and produced films such as The Pajama Game (1957) and Funny Face (1957). Cindy Rose, an English, Arts and Humanities profesor at Harrisburg Area Community College, will instruct. Call ext. 14509 to register.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 16 , 10:30 A.M. The American home front during the Korean War was far different from that of World War II. Then and now, the American people had little understanding of the significance of the Korean War, nor did they understand the hardships that our servicemen and women had to endure while serving. Dr. Robert Wheelersburg discusses the Korean War’s “Silent Warriors,” and brings the importance of their service to American society and their place in history.

SUNDAY, MARCH 20, 2 P.M.
Named after the famous big band leader, Glenn performs well over 350 shows a year. His arsenal of instruments includes: custom accordions, trumpets, harmonicas, trombone, flugelhorn, baritone, ukulele, button accordion, keyboard and more! As a vocalist, the ability to sing harmony live with himself is unique. The sound is equivalent to a 14-piece band. Audiences love when Glenn “mingles” and interacts with people. It’s not uncommon for him to stroll and sing and include people in the show! The show features clean humor, which is original and many times unrehearsed and spontaneous.
Outside the Loft
SUNDAY, MARCH 20, 3 P.M.
Deike Auditorium and Channel 956
Outside the Loft is made up of a trio of talented musicians: Van Hoffman (vocals and saxophone), Beverly Spangler (vocals and keyboard) and Mark Raubenstine (vocals and guitar), who perform acoustic versions of well-known songs from the 50s to the present. You’ll hear songs by artists such as Simon & Garfunkel; The Everly Brothers; Mamas & Papas; Peter, Paul & Mary; and Gerry Rafferty, just to name a few.

Korean War: International Implications
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23, 10:30 A.M. Keystone Room
More than 5.7 million American troops were engaged in the Korean War, resulting in more than 33,000 combat deaths and another 92,000 injuries. It marked the first armed, global conflict between democracy and communism in what would be known as the Cold War. Join Dr. Robert Wheelersburg as he explores the lasting international impact of this war.
Walking/Hikers’ Club Introductory Meeting
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23, 10 A.M. Grand Lodge Hall Studio B
Are you interested in walking in the beautiful woods and fields of South Central PA up to approximately 90 minutes away from the Masonic Village campus? Destinations/trails will be determined by participants in advance, and we will arrange a schedule. Frequency, length, degree of difficulty, distance from campus and other considerations are all subject for discussion and may vary for each hike. Walks would be intended for those comfortable walking on surfaces other than paved ones. Discuss possible hiking adventure plans to get us started for outdoor fellowship and exercise within the safety of a group in an off-campus locale.

BICYCLING at MASONIC VILLAGE Most people are aware bicycling is a healthy, low impact activity with many potential benefits. Regularly cycling is one way to avoid a sedentary lifestyle while preventing physical and mental health concerns from arising and managing existing conditions. The National Institute of Health and other sources report bicycling can help prevent stroke, heart attack and high blood pressure and may also help prevent and manage Type 2 diabetes or other life-threatening maladies. The roadways at Masonic Village offer a safe, convenient place to get off the couch and get some exercise, and we have committed to making bicycling even safer on campus. Dangerous grates have been replaced with bicycle-friendly ones, making the roadways smoother. Watch for new “share the road” signs coming this spring. The Pennsylvania’s Motor Vehicle Code (Chapter 35: Special Vehicles and Pedestrians – Sub-chapter A) has incorporated laws which allow bicycles on most roads.
MOTOR VEHICLE DRIVERS:
• When passing a bicyclist, drivers must allow at least four feet between their vehicle and the bicycle. • Drivers are permitted to cross the center double yellow line if necessary to provide the required four feet if it is safe to do so. The driver must yield to oncoming traffic and obey other traffic laws. •N o turn by a driver should interfere with a bicyclist who is proceeding straight on a roadway while operating in accordance with Chapter 35. Drivers attempting to turn must yield the right of way to the bicyclist. • It is illegal for motorists to force a bicyclist off of the road, and drivers who do this may face criminal charges.
BICYCLISTS and MOTOR VEHICLE DRIVERS: Please share the road. It’s not just a good idea — it’s the law.
BICYCLISTS:
• If there is only one travel lane, bicyclists may use any portion of an available roadway that has a width of not more than one lane of traffic in each direction or in any circumstance to avoid roadway hazards. • When traveling below the posted speed limit, bicyclists must keep to the right side of the road unless it is unsafe to do so or unless they are making a left turn or riding on a one-way street. The bicyclist must make the decision on where it is safest to bike. Bicyclists are required to follow most of the highway laws motor vehicle drivers are required to follow, such as stopping at red lights and stop signs, riding on the right side of the road, riding the posted direction on one-way streets and not riding on sidewalks. There are instances when bicyclists are not required to follow motor vehicle laws, but these exceptions are posted.

Funeral Team As we make preparations for our final journey, one of the ways we can make it easier on our loved ones is to have our plans in order. There are worksheets available online and in Masonic Village’s Spiritual Care Office to clarify funeral preparations and service preferences, so when that day comes, our loved ones are aware of our wishes. To request these worksheets, contact Spiritual Care at ext. 33106 or your funeral home, or you can search online for “pre-planning my funeral.” One of the privileges we can offer at Masonic Village is to provide a Masonic Funeral Service, as part of the way we honor a brother who has made his final journey and now rests from his labors. Traditionally, this is arranged by asking the brother’s lodge to do the service, but often times, members are unable to travel or garner participants. We have a Masonic Village Funeral Team on campus which
Contact Angela Ortiz, hospice volunteer coordinator, at ext. 33024 to register by March 18.
consists of other brothers who wish to provide such an honor. Brother Ivan Arnold is the Captain of this group, and Brother Mick McCurdy is also a contact. If you would like to help bestow this honor to our fellow Masonic brothers, please sign up by calling Brother Ivan Arnold at 717-361-5724, Brother Mick McCurdy at 717-740-1162 or the Spiritual Care Office at ext. 33106. You may also fill out this form and return it to the Spiritual Care Office or to either Brother Ivan or Brother Mick. Thank you for honoring our Masonic fraternity and your brothers in this way.
