essential INTRODUCTION
Hello... nd welcome to the latest edition of Australian Papercraft Essentials. We’ve had a lot of fun putting this issue together – it’s absolutely jam-packed full of ideas for all your crafty makes. Are you enjoying the start of autumn? I always get a burst of energy as soon as the cooler weather hits. As well as the lower temperatures (and the excuse for a change of wardrobe), I enjoy the different colours that are on display. I just love earthy tones and anything nature-inspired as a base for my creations. Our free gift feature captures this look perfectly. Mel Garner has used some strong autumnal shades on page 10, to go with the ultra-cute Woodware owl stamps that come as a bonus with this issue. For those who love a glorious vintage look, Sandie Downey’s cards using the new FabScraps range on page 18 will be just the thing. What’s wonderful about this style is that it can very easily be used for different occasions and audiences (even men!). Of course, this time of year also means Mother’s Day is not far away. We have some stunning designs for mums of all ages in our Cut out and keep section, which starts on page 35, incorporating pearl flourishes for instant pizzaz. And for even more inspiration for Mother’s Day cards, check out our readers’ gallery on page 32. No matter what time of year it is, stamping is always a favourite teachnique and, as usual, we have it well covered with some adorable new Bildmalarna and Some Odd Girl sets on pages 39 and 47. Our in-depth masterclass feature on page 52 focuses on the popular Washi trend. You’ve probably used it as a tape in the past, but have you tried Washi sheets? We asked Kim Dellow to demonstrate the best ways to incorporate these into modern designs and the results are impressive. We’ve also got some nifty quick makes with Andrea Neville’s suggestions on page 62 for making the most of online freebies, and Tara Capewell on page 68 uses ready-cut step cards to fantastic effect to make cards for boys of all ages. You must check out the dinky tool embellishments she has included! With all this as well as the usual tips, news and letters, I think I’ll let you get started. Happy crafting!

Back to basics Whether you’re new to crafting or simply need to take stock, here you’ll find everything you need to get started...
Tools of the trade
The paper trimmer Also known as a guillotine, this is a must-have for straight lines. A lightweight 12” trimmer is recommended, with a levered cutting plate. Among the brands favoured by our designers are Making Memories (www.makingmemories.com) and Fiskars (www.fiskarscraft.eu).
Adhesive solutions
The craft knife
There’s a mind-boggling array of adhesives on the market, but to start with your best bets are: doublesided tape, which can easily be trimmed to size; 3D foam tape or pads to add dimension; and a roller glue that is easy to dispense without making your fingers sticky.
There are many types of craft knife available and they prove indispensable when it comes to cutting and scoring. Invest in one that has a changeable blade, or a scalpel.
Scissors A large pair of kitchen scissors is fine for nonprecision cutting, whereas you’re likely to need a very small precision-tip pair for all the fiddly jobs that require pinpoint accuracy. You’ll also be thankful for a pair of small Tefloncoated scissors to cut sticky materials with minimum hassle.
The bone folder For crisp folds, you can’t go wrong with a bone folder. The smooth surface reduces friction for neater folds, helping you achieve professional-looking projects.
The cutting mat You’ll need two different types of cutting surface: a self-healing cutting mat for cutting, piercing and setting eyelets, and a Teflon-coated craft mat, preferably infused with glass for strength, non-stick and able to withstand high temperatures.

Cardstock You can never have too much card! Available in every shade imaginable and in different weights (thicknesses) to suit, cardstock is essential for matting, making your own card blanks, creating your own embellishments and much more. Buy pre-cut and folded card blanks for speedy creations!
essential BASICS
How to... make the most of Distress Inks anger Tim Holtz Distress Inks and ink refills are fantastically versatile products that are perfect for adding all sorts of distressed and aged effects to your designs. Due to their water-based qualities they also make a great watercolour medium, and all that you need to take full advantage is an old ceramic tile or non-stick craft mat and a paintbrush. This extends their versatility even further and makes them a must-have item for any craft kit. Distress Inks are ideal for using as watercolours, as the card and step-by-step guide here illustrates.
R
How to... use Distress Inks as watercolours
Stamp your image onto white cardstock using a VersaFine inkpad.
1
Press your Distress Inks onto a nonporous surface such as a ceramic tile or a non-stick craft mat and mix it together with a little water.
2
Pick up the colour with your paintbrush and paint it onto the stamped image, building up the colour in layers to add intensity where desired.
