WELCOME

Hello... ... and welcome to another fantastic issue of Australian Simply Cards. We’re really starting to feel the heat of the summer now and of course, that brings with it the build up to the festive season! To help you along with your Christmas crafting, we have some very inspiring projects to share. We start our Christmas features on page 14 with some ideas for using the fabulous Spellbinders stamp set and embossing folder that come free with this issue. Then, get on board with the nautical trend as Teresa Abajo creates some sea-inspired cards over on page 18. For fans of stamping and colouring, look no further than page 28, where Kathy Jones creates some gorgeous Christmas cards using the latest designs from Flourishes. And our masterclass this month, on page 37, explores three brands of spray ink to help you decide which one is best for you. What’s Christmas without a little bling? I know I love to pretty up my Christmas cards with a little sparkle and shine and if you’re the same, head to page 44, where Julie Price joins the Design Team with some sparkling ideas. With the Christmas season creeping up on us, this month we also focus on the latest festive offering from Hot Off The Press with some cute homespun ideas from LeNae Gerig over on page 53. Even at Christmas time, flowers still play a key part in our craft stash and this month, Alicia Barry shares her techniques for making beautiful flowers to suit your papercraft projects all year round. Turn to page 63 to find out more. With everything that’s got to be done around the festive season, we can sometimes find ourselves short on time for making those all-important cards. If you find yourself in this situation, turn to page 82 for some quick-make ideas from Janelle Graham. And don’t forget our Cardmaker of the Year competition is well underway with loads of fantastic prizes to be won. It’s your last chance to enter before our closing date, so find out more on page 26 and get cracking with your designs. Now these are just the highlights of what we have for you this issue and we have lots more including all the latest news and the usual tips and tricks. And if you can’t wait to see what we’ve got in store for you next time, head to our digital preview of Issue 62 at www.ppjump.com/asc62preview So until next month… Happy crafting!

Add a bit of sparkle and shine to your Christmas creations with these gorgeous cards by Julie Price

hiny tinsel and colourful baubles surround us at Christmas time and sparkle and bling are all part of the festive appeal. There are many ways to incorporate a bit of bling into Christmas cards. There are a lot of glitter glue brands including Derivan Kindyglitz and Ranger Stickles and these can be used with a variety of pearls and rhinestones in lots of different shapes and sizes. Self-adhesive and iron-on

S 44

bling, such as the ones I’ve used on some of my cards, make adding sparkle really easy and you can find BLINGabilities to co-ordinate with Spellbinders dies too. They are so easy to apply, really effective and the crystals can be applied to cardstock and even clothing. To apply them, cut out the shape from the crystal transfer and remove the white backing. Place the clear transfer onto cardstock or clothing then heat your iron on

www.australiansimplycards.com.au

a wool setting (no steam). Place the iron on top of the clear plastic transfer and hold for 5-10 seconds if working with cardstock or 25-30 seconds if working on clothing. Do not move the iron around as this may move the stones. The clear plastic will not melt when the correct heat settings are used. When cooled slightly, you can then carefully peel back the plastic. If the crystals have not adhered properly, repeat the

heating process. Rhinestones and pearls can then be coloured to co-ordinate with your card design using Copic markers. Don’t be afraid to experiment with contemporary colours when using gemstones and bling. You will have a much wider choice if you don’t limit yourself to red and green tones. I hope these card designs will inspire you to add a bit of sparkle to your Christmas and fill it with bling this year! l

Keren Baker Designer

Take it with a pinch of salt

Keren Baker shows you how to create colourful kids’ cards using items you already have in your home

s crafters we’re always looking to learn new techniques and expand our existing skills. However this can come with a great deal of expense, so luckily this technique uses household items that you probably already have in your cupboard. When you want to experiment with this technique, sea salt or salt crystals are the best to use. They tend to soak up more water and paint and create a stylised pattern. The technique is simple; start by creating your colour using acrylic paints – I used paints that I’d bought for my kids. When you’ve got the right shade, thin it down with water,

A

but not too much, so you’ll still have a vibrant colour. Some colours work better than others. I find that adding white makes it harder to create the salt pattern while using primary colours worked the best.

Get the look It’s also important to use the right paper – you’ll find you might need to experiment to find which paper works best for you. Watercolour paper is great for this technique, but I didn’t want the texture ‘fighting’ with the salt look. Whatever you choose to use, thinner cardstock isn’t suitable for this technique. You’ll get the best results when using thicker

cardstock coated with a waterresisting finish. This will stop the paint from soaking directly into the paper. Let the paint sit a little while before adding the salt to create the best effect. After adding the salt, let the paint dry completely to create the best effect. Once dry, gently brush the salt from the cardstock. Some of it may stick to the cardstock – just rub if off gently using your fingers.

Embellishing I’ve used the technique in many different ways – as both backgrounds and embellishments. This is also a technique that works really well in conjunction with stamps.

Creating cards for kids can be very tricky as you don’t want to make them too cute. The new stamp sets from Hero Arts were perfect for this – they are great for kids in all age groups. This technique also works well in combination with ProMarkers and paper piecing to give it even more interest. l
