WELCOME

Hello... …and welcome to issue 67 of Australian Simply Cards. As always, this month’s issue is jam packed with inspirational projects, new techniques and loads of ideas to keep you crafting all month. Of course, we have a fantastic free gift for you as well, and if you head over to page 12, we have some ideas to get you started using your free Prima paper stack and stamp set. We love to keep up with the new colour trends here at Australian Simply Cards and this month, we feature one of the hottest colour combinations of the season – freesia, grey and white. Head over to page 16 where Debbie Pamment creates some stunning cards using this pretty palette. We always enjoy experimenting with a new product and this month we explore Vertigo Film. Turn to page 24 where Linda Lucas creates some lovely cards using this exciting new product. It’s always fun to make cards for family, but it’s important to remember that friends are a big part of our lives too, so on page 33, Kathy Jones celebrates friendship with some pretty cards using the latest products from JustRite Stampers. No matter who you’re creating for, die-cutting will probably play a part in your design. It’s a popular technique and this month, we share some inspiring ways to use dies with our masterclass on page 43. If you’re looking for an alternative to the norm, then 3D cards are a great idea. In this issue, Sue Smyth shares her ideas for pyramid cards over on page 52. We’ve also got fresh inspiration for using embossing folders. We all have embossing folders hiding in our crafty stash, and they’re a great way for adding texture and interest to card backgrounds. But there are other things you can do with them. Turn to page 62 to find out more. We have all your feminine makes covered this month with pretty floral designs over on page 70, then if you need a card in a hurry, check out the quick-make designs over on page 77. Of course, these are just the highlights of what we have for you this issue and we have lots more including all the latest news and the usual tips and tricks. And if you can’t wait for next issue, take a sneaky peek at our digital preview of issue 68 by visiting www.ppjump.com/asc68preview So until next month… Happy crafting!

Mellow yellow Debbie Pamment Designer

reesia, grey and white is such a classic colour combination that can be used for anything from retro adult styles to a baby’s nursery. The tones can range between soft pastels and vibrantly bright hues. I personally love to work with yellow and think it isn’t used enough in cardmaking. Luckily though, this colour combination is trending at the moment so hopefully we’ll see a lot more yellow being used! My first job for this set of cards was to source some yellow, grey and white patterned paper. I personally prefer to use paper pads that

F

16

Debbie Pamment creates some gorgeous cards using this season’s hot colour combination of freesia, grey and white

range in size from 6x6” to 8x8” as the patterns are downsized to suit. Often though, there are only a few papers in each pack to suit your designs, whether that’s due to the patterns or the colours available within the pack. If you do struggle, in today’s digital age, it’s relatively easy and cheap to access designer papers online to suit the style you’re aiming for. You can get a whole set for a few dollars and they are usually instantly available as a download once you’ve completed payment. Then it’s up to you which of the designs you choose to

www.australiansimplycards.com.au

print off. Of course, you do need to have a colour printer. I found three sets of complementary patterned papers suitable for my needs and within five minutes they were bought and downloaded onto my printer. I could also easily re-size each pattern to suit my work and only needed to print off those patterns I wished to use. For these projects, I simply inserted them into a word document and printed them off at the size they opened at. The other advantage of digital papers is that you can select the weight and texture of the card you print onto. I

like to use medium-weight cardstock, but if weight is an issue for postage reasons, you can print on a lighterweight card. Also, you will always have access to these designs in the future once they are saved – you never need to worry about running out of your favourite design again, or not being able to find it because it’s out of print. I had great fun using digital patterend papers for this project and also enjoyed creating fresh and bright cards with this gorgeous colour combination. Have a go and get stuck into this trendy mix of hues. l

Vertigo Film

Linda Lucas Designer

Linda Lucas creates some stunning cards using Vertigo Film, a new product that achieves fabulous results

I

t’s always exciting to start crafting with new products on the market, but if they’re unfamiliar to us, we may be tempted to stay away from them only to make the discovery, much later, that they’re amazing! Imagine Crafts Vertigo Film is new on the market and is no exception to this scenario – as you will discover. It can be used to add an optical dimension to your craft projects. With it being a translucent patterned material, Vertigo reflects and refracts light, creating dazzling visual

24

effects. It’s available in six amazing patterns and two versatile sizes – 6x6” and 12x12” – making it great not only for cards, but also for scrapbooking and mixedmedia projects. The creative possibilities with this product are endless – I have dry-embossed it to give added texture, stencilled it using inks and a sponge dauber, die-cut it in various ways, added shimmer, stamped on it, and every time, a very different result has been achieved, giving each card a unique look and

www.australiansimplycards.com.au

definitely creating a stunning end result. Although Vertigo is thick and sturdy, it can be cut not only using dies, but also scissors, paper trimmers and punches. It can then be placed over artwork to help create dimensional layers. I have worked with both the textured and the smooth side of the product. It’s best to ink on the textured side and stamp on the smooth side. The effectiveness of this can be seen on the Autumn Blooms design. Vertigo is so versatile and

allows you to create any style of card, whether it’s clean and simple or complex with lots of layers and embellishments – you’re only limited by your imagination. l

TOP TIP A Spellbinders Grand Calibur machine has been used to die-cut in this collection. The following set up was used working from the bottom to the top of the stack: Spellbinders grey base plate A2, Junior Metal Shim, Vertigo Film, die, pink embossing plate. Brands can vary, so always check instruction sheets before cutting
