ATCs MASTERCLASS

As easy as ATC

Teresa Abajo Designer

Teresa Abajo creates some stunning mini works of art with these Artist Trading Cards

A

rtist Trading Cards (ATCs) are miniature pieces of art. They are a fantastic way to distribute little samples of your work with your contact details on the back, and an equally fantastic way of collecting the work of others. There are two basic rules when it comes to ATCs. The first is their size – they are invariably 21⁄2x31⁄2”. The second rule is that they must never be exchanged for money – they are designed to be given away or swapped. Besides these two rules, anything goes! ATCs aren’t restricted to

the papercrafting world – they can be made of virtually any material (fabric, wood, ceramic, metal) making them a wonderful way to get crafters from many disciplines involved in swaps. Finding people to swap with isn’t too difficult. A quick Google search reveals many sites both in Australia and internationally. Many stores run ATC groups, with regular swap meets making crafting that little bit more social. Formats for swapping differ. It could be a one-for-one swap, or you may be required to make several similar ATCs so

that each member of the swap ends up with a variety of returns. Swaps generally run with a theme, and it’s interesting to see how participants interpret it. For some, making ATCs is only half the fun. Collecting these little works of art can be a source of enjoyment too. Plastic sleeves are available with pockets to hold and protect each ATC and they can be kept in a binder, making it easy to peruse a collection. The size of ATCs makes them perfect for use as gift tags too and they’re a great way to store gift cards. A

completed ATC can be adhered to the front of a card as a feature, and a set of ATCs can be adhered to a canvas for some stunning wall art. While ATCs are certainly not a new thing, the introduction of new products and the discovery of new techniques (and re-discovery of old ones!) will keep this concept fresh for a long time yet. I hope you enjoy this collection of ATCs. They incorporate a range of techniques and styles to kickstart your ATC creativity and get swapping. l

Quick & simple cards for men

Jo Kill Designer

Create quick, simple and effective cards for men. Keeping it simple is the key, as Jo Kill demonstrates

or some reason malethemed cards always seem to be a bit trickier to make than female ones. They take a lot longer to make than other cards too. There is a plethora of techniques, themes and embellishments that can be quickly applied and added. From flowers to fashion, girly cards appear to be a lot easier to make, but you can create the perfect card for men or boys just as easily.

F

Colours and shapes Choosing the right papers and colours are often the first hurdles. A lot of collections are designed with women in mind, but there are ranges that work equally well for men too. Have a look at different collections, even if at first glance they look a bit girly, have a closer look and you may find that they will

50

make brilliant male cards too! Keep the colours simple – neutral tones work really well. They don’t have to be boring either – try incorporating little accents using bright or bold colours to add interest, or choose a coloured cardstock blank rather than the traditional white or kraft cardstock. If you do use a plain card blank, try using a bolder pattern to help balance your design. Most men don’t tend to go for fussy or over-embellished designs – a clean and simple style with lots of background space is probably a safe bet. However, you can still add embellishments without going ‘over the top’. Swap butterflies and flowers for stars and tags to create cards with cleaner lines and you’re nearly there! Change adhesive sparkly gems for matt ones or enamel

www.australiansimplycards.com.au

dots, use metal or wooden embellishments instead of softer feminine ones, and use Washi tape or twine instead of ribbon to create a card that any boy or man will appreciate.

Making the cards To create these cards, I chose the brilliant new range of papers and embellishments from Papermania – Madame Payraud. The name may indicate a feminine range, but the colours and products are fantastically suited for males too! The collection comes with a wide range of muted colours and accessories, but also contains just the right amount of colour splashes to make your cards ‘pop’. Not only does the range come with patterned paper and embellishments, there are also stamps that you can use to

create a quick-and-simple greeting or sentiment. Best of all, if you choose a co-ordinating range or collection, all the hard work of matching colours is done for you – you just have to choose how to fit them together! Don’t forget to check your current stash too, plain and simple dies or punches are brilliant for adding shapes to male cards. Add stitching for simple, yet manly detail and texture. If you don’t want to use a stamped greeting, why not try using letter stickers to create further interest in your cards? Or, you can even use a printed sentiment. There are so many free fonts available and the hue and font style can be matched to complement the papers and cardstock that you’re using with little effort. l

WOW! embossing TECHNIQUE

Embossed sparkle

Louise Collins Designer

Add pops of colour and sparkle to your cards using the newest releases from WOW! hen I used to hear about heat embossing, I would think of gold or silver powder, melted onto basic stamped images. Years on, the traditional method of heat embossing has evolved and transformed into a range of different techniques, using a rainbow of colours and finishes that can be used on just about any surface. The basic method of heat embossing is to apply a wet substance to a surface, such as a stamped image onto card, for the special embossing powder to stick to. This powder is melted using a heat tool and when it reaches the correct temperature, it melts to transform from powdery granules to a smooth, shiny, water-resistant medium. This alone is just like magic, but some of the techniques I have explored in this feature show how to use embossing powders to work with any material or theme you want. I have chosen to use WOW! embossing powders and

W

glitters – the really bright neon colours are so on trend at the moment. The powders keep their strong colour, even after heating. I love the way the embossing glitters look and act just like fine glitter until they are heated. Once you apply heat, a portion of the coloured particles melt into a smooth gloss and the small glitter flakes continue to add sparkle to your project.

Getting started When heat-embossing, you need a slow-drying ink, for instance a pigment ink. Dye inks dry too quickly for this technique and you’ll find they will not hold the powders in place long enough for you to melt them. I chose an embossing ink as it is extra sticky, stays wet for longer and it’s clear. On my ‘Live, laugh, love’ and ‘Follow your dreams’ cards, I have simply covered some chipboard pieces in clear ink and set the powders onto them. I took this a step further with the butterflies by distressing the finished

pieces. You could also use this technique alongside the dual-colour embossing I used on the ‘Inspire’ card and carefully sprinkle a mix of colours onto chipboard or wooden embellishments. You can also emboss onto almost any surface – you could try wooden shapes, metal embellishments, glass or even some fabrics. The only thing to consider when trying out materials to use, is how the material will react with direct heat applied to it for a minute or two. If your material is likely to burn or shrink, like acetate would for example, then it is best to find a different base for your embossing. Besides altering the colours of the embellishments using the powders and glitters, Not only have I shown a way of creating an original background on my ‘Enjoy’ card, but also an alternative way of melting the powders. By heating the embossing powders from underneath, it took a little longer for the powder to reach the required

heat to melt, but the shape was not governed by a stamp or any other uniform design. Instead, the powders were able to flow together and mix a little meaning the edges are rough and more natural. This is ideal for larger areas too. On my ‘Take the journey’ card, I experimented with another way of holding the powders in place, by using a thick texture paste applied through a stencil, which gave my card extra dimension and colour. Of course, any medium that would hold the powder in place could be tried – try using glues, double-sided tape, paints or even some types of wax. Keep in mind that heat embossing requires applying a very high temperature to the powders in order to melt and transform them, which is why I often use tweezers to hold my smaller items whilst heating. When you don’t have a heat tool you could also have a go at placing powdered items on a baking tray and putting them in a hot oven for a few minutes instead. l
