WELCOME
Hello... ... and welcome to Issue 59 of Australian Simply Cards. As always, you’ll find lots of stunning projects and ideas to keep you inspired. As the weather warms and we welcome the spring months, our thoughts also turn to the upcoming festive season. It’s always best to get a head start and avoid that last-minute rush, so to get you started with your Christmas cardmaking, our exclusive free gift is a super cute stamp set from Tiddly Inks. These sweet images are sure to get you thinking about your holiday cards and to help you along, Kathy Jones shares her ideas for using them over on page 14. Stay up to date with all the latest looks as we head into the busy season too. This month, our trend feature on page 18 from Janelle Graham focuses on frames and the many ways to incorporate them into your projects. On page 28, we get back to our Christmas projects with some gorgeous vintage cards from Karen George, and if you’re looking for something a little different, our masterclass is all about movement with some fun kinetic cards on page 37. To round off our Christmas features, we have a fun contemporary colour scheme with some fresh ideas for shaped designs from Karelyn Joy on page 82. And as a fun festive project this year, why not have a go at making some of our felt ornaments as demonstrated by Su Pennick on page 90? So we’re all set to get started with our Christmas makes, but we’ve got all other occasions covered too, including quick get well cards. Turn to page 63 for designs that are sure to brighten anyone’s day. Embossing folders always play an important part in any craft stash and of course, they're great for adding texture. If you want fresh ideas for using yours, Teresa Abajo shares some fabulous techniques on page 55. And don’t forget our Cardmaker of the Year competition is well underway with loads of fantastic prizes to be won. There is still heaps of time to get your entry in to us, so check out all the details over on page 26. These are just the highlights of what we have for you this issue and we have lots more including all the latest news and the usual tips and tricks. And if you’re just as excited as us about what next issue has in store for you, take a look at our digital preview at www.ppjump.com/asc60preview So until next month… Happy crafting! Dressing the tree My wife is a subscriber to your magazine and I sometimes help her with her card creations. I used some of her spare cardstock, lollipop sticks, clear stamps and embellishments and came up with these tree decorations. I die-cut different shapes and put them together, then added the names. I hope to sell these along with my wife’s cards at my daughter’s school fair to help raise money for new playground equipment. I hope you like them! Paul Wallworth, by email ASC: We love your tree decorations Paul! Thanks for sending in a picture for us to see – we are sure your wife is happy to have a crafty husband, and what a great way of raising money for your daughter’s school!
We love to hear what our readers have been up to, so send your cards, photos, stories and tips by email to letters@practicalpublishing.com.au or post to: Letters, Australian Simply Cards, Practical Publishing, GPO Box 1457, Brisbane QLD 4001. We look forward to hearing from you! Vintage butterfly My daughter has recently bought me a Cuttlebug, so I was absolutely thrilled to receive the free butterfly die with Issue 56. It is a fantastic start to my die and embossing folder collection. Hope you like the card I made with it. Liz Jones, by email ASC: What great timing Liz. We love your card and we’re sure you’ll make lots more amazing designs using our wonderful butterfly die!
Quick cards I just wanted to thank you for the lovely butterfly die that came with Issue 56 of Australian Simply Cards. It die-cuts beautifully and the die was perfect for a couple of quick cards I needed to get done. Janet Hewson, by email ASC: Your cards are beautiful Janet! You’ve really made good use of our die and we’re glad to hear you like it so much.

Butterflies I have been looking for a good butterfly die for my Cuttlebug and I love the die that came with Issue 56. I bought Australian Simply Cards on my way to work and I couldn’t wait to get started when I got home. I made 40 butterflies that night using patterned paper and cardstock. Based on that night I promised my local animal charity I would have 100 cards for them by the end of the month. I will also have a go at the floral and pin designs as they look really classy. Thanks again! Bev Whitter, by email ASC: We’re so happy to hear you’re making such good use of our die Bev, and what a noble thing to do. The card looks great too, we’re sure they’ll be very pleased!
Happy Christmas! I’ve been experimenting with making my own metal toppers and embellishments from drinks cans coloured with Spectrum Noir pens. Whenever I attempt a new technique, I always try to make a couple of Christmas cards too, so I won’t be rushing in November. For this card I used a Sizzix snowflake die and embossed the die-cut to create a textured topper. I love how the metal makes the snowflake look shimmery and icy. Is this the first Christmas card you’ve been sent this year? Alison Lindsay, by email ASC: Although Christmas cards are slowly appearing in the office from our designers, this is one of the first we received from our readers! And what a lovely idea this is Alison, it looks stunning and it’s a great budget tip too.
The festive spirit Christmas has come and gone 18 times since I started cardmaking, but my friends know I ‘don't do Christmas!’ I really love making individual cards for people throughout the year, but can't be bothered with the factory-style method of making 40 or 50 cards. I’d much rather support a charity!
But Australian Simply Cards has broken my lazy habit. Your beautiful free Kaisercraft Christmas paper pad that came with Issue 49 has finally inspired me to make a few cards for special friends. The cards were so easy and my friends will be startled to find no guide dog puppies in their envelopes this year!
Anne Hayes, by email ASC: Sometimes it can take a while for the inspiration to take hold, Anne, but we’re so glad it did because these are beautiful cards! We’re sure your friends will be very pleased when they receive your Christmas greetings. Thank you for sharing with us. www.australiansimplycards.com.au
