You’ve been framed

Janelle Graham Designer

Janelle Graham shares her secrets for the perfect framed designs

e’re spoilt for choice when it comes to frames at the moment. There are so many products to choose from – whether it’s traditional wood veneer frames or modern rhinestone shapes – so it’s easy to incorporate this particular trend into your designs. If you’re like me and shabbychic is your style, then you’ll be happy to know that most of the frames available are ornate, textured and old-fashioned. But no matter what they’re made from, the key use of any frame is to highlight the main aspect of a card. This could be a sentiment, a printed

W

18

image on the paper, another type of embellishment or a stamped image. The frame is there to make these elements stand out. A frame can also be used to add colour impact to an otherwise monochromatic design. Many frames available can be altered to suit your requirements using inks, mists, chalks, acrylic paints or Distress Paints, as well as paper that can be used to cover the frame. Prima and Webster’s Pages have a wonderful range of resin frames and co-ordinated embellishments. These are great as they are lightly coloured and can be easily

www.australiansimplycards.com.au

incorporated into your card design. Wooden and chipboard frames are similarly easy to adapt. If you want to create many layers on your design, flat frame styles are best to use. These include frames cut from cardstock or felt using dies. Digital stamps and other downloadable frame images are also great for layering; the best thing being that you can get some very attractive designs for free. Great variety can be achieved when stamping frames, either directly onto your card front or stamping onto cardstock, colouring and then cutting out. If you want to add texture to

frames like these, embossing folders are an excellent choice. But you can also choose techniques that add texture such as gluing crumpled tissue paper and then painting it, adding texture paste then painting, or adding glitter, microbeads or heat embossing. For the most interesting effects, design your card so that elements go in and out of your frame. For example, you could have a flower that is under part of the frame and then spills over the top of another part of the frame. But whatever you do, this is certainly a time to think outside the box. l

Beyond the boundaries

Karelyn Joy Designer

DOWNLOAD Find the templates used to create these cards at www.practicalpublishing.com.au/downloads

Karelyn Joy shares her ideas for making simple shaped cards with a contemporary colour scheme

love the anticipation and surprise of opening the envelope of a greeting card, especially when the card hidden inside has bumps and lumps and does not feel like a rectangle at all! Shaped cards have paved the way for creativity to stretch beyond the boundaries of plain rectangular or square-shaped cards, and Christmas is the perfect time to explore these endless opportunities. There are many dies available to cut an A5 card blank into various shapes and sizes. Spellbinders Grand Nestabilities dies are up to 6" in size and have loads of decorative-edged shapes perfect for transforming your ideas into creative cards. By

I

82

placing one edge of the die above the folded edge of the card, your die-cutting machine will cut through both layers of the card, leaving the fold as a hinge, so you’re left with a shaped card ready to decorate to your heart’s content! However, when you don’t have a die-cutting machine at your fingertips, DIY templates are easy to make and a cheaper alternative too. The easiest way to begin is by tracing the A5 card face onto A4 cardstock and extending the edges according to the shape you want. For the bonbon card, I simply extended the horizontal edges to incorporate the pull ends of the bon-bon. I based the size on a DL card, so used that as

www.australiansimplycards.com.au

my guide. Once I was happy with the shape, I traced it onto folded A4 cardstock and cut around the shape through both layers. You can then use the same template to trim patterned papers to fit perfectly onto your card shape and let the decorating begin! Another way of creating a shaped card effect is by adding to the edges of a standard folded card. The tips of Christmas trees and baubles can overhang the edges of your card, giving you more space to decorate and another focal point too. In the card ‘Merry and bright’, I simply cut out gift shapes and attached them to the top of the card. I added foam tape to the centre present to

add a 3D look to the design. But what about envelopes for shaped cards? The simple answer is to create cards within the boundaries of regular-sized envelopes, just like I did for the ‘Celebrate bon-bon’ card. Speciality stationery shops sell DL and 145mm square envelopes in a range of papers and colours to match your designs. You can also buy templates to create your own envelopes or download printable envelope templates from online sites. So, as you begin your Christmas crafting this year, try to think beyond the boundaries of the basic card and who knows what creative shaped cards will be hiding inside your envelopes! l
