WELCOME

Hello... …and welcome to issue 65 of Australian Simply Cards. It’s been a very busy month for us here at the office. I’ve just returned from CHA, where I had the chance to check out all the new products and upcoming trends we’ve got to look forward to in the world of crafting this year. It’s such an exciting time of year and I can’t wait to bring you some fabulous ideas inspired by the show in future issues. As always, our designers have created some fantastic projects to keep you inspired and busy over the coming months, and to get you started is your free gift – a Graphic 45 paper pack with die-cuts. Flick to page 14 for some ideas on using these. If you’ve been shopping lately, you will notice that white and blue tones are very popular colours in fashion as well as crafting. Teresa Abajo creates some stunning cards using this popular combination over on page 18. With a year of birthdays ahead, it’s no doubt at some stage you will be need a card in a hurry so head over to page 26 for some fun quick-make card ideas from Tara Capewell. If you’ve got a bit more time on your hands, then this month, our masterclass is all about brayering and Janelle Graham has lots of ways to use this forgotten tool over on page 32. I love accordion-fold cards and they can be so much fun to create. This issue, Julie Price shares her ideas for making some lovely folded cards on page 40. If you’re still struggling to keep up with your New Year’s resolution to recycle more, then we’ve got the perfect technique to get you on track. Linda Lucas has some pretty ideas for incorporating old greetings cards into your creations over on page 48. And if the new year means a new baby to you or a loved one, then we have some wonderful handmade cards to mark the occasion. Kathy Jones has some fabulous ideas for this lovely occasion on page 64. Of course these are just the highlights of what we have for you this issue and we have lots more including all the latest news and the usual tips and tricks. And if you can’t wait for next issue, take a sneaky peek at our digital preview of issue 66 by visiting www.ppjump.com/asc66preview So until next month… Happy crafting!

Out of the blue Teresa Abajo creates some stunning cards using the popular colour combination of navy blue and white

he world of fashion is a brilliant source of inspiration when it comes to papercraft colour combinations. Fashion houses invest many millions of dollars in their collections, and their survival often depends on the colour choices they make and how they coordinate with one another. Blue is due to be a really popular shade for 2014, featuring heavily in designer collections. Looking through clothing catalogues it’s clear to see that navy, electric and even powder blue are all set

T

to be a hit in the fashion world. According to colour psychology theories, blue can invoke feelings of peace, security and calm. Think along the lines of a tranquil ocean or the sky on a clear summer’s day. This makes it a fantastic choice for cards of a comforting nature, such as those with sympathy sentiments. Not all shades of blue are perceived as sedate and serene however. The more brilliant blue colours can be quite exhilarating. Take the vibrant feathers of a peacock

www.australiansimplycards.com.au

or exotic plumes of parrots for example. Such shades of blue can add an equally dramatic touch to a card, and can make birthday or congratulations cards a little more exciting. When it comes to colour co-ordination, a fresh, crisp white is perhaps the most powerful shade to choose. Contrasting yet complementary, this colour combination works well on a diverse range of handmade cards. I didn’t have to look too far for supplies in shades of blue. While there are few patterned paper ranges out at the

moment that are purely blue, I found Washi tape, background stamps and stencils handy for adding patterns and texture. Inks in the appropriate hues are easy to come by, with many options available from Ranger and Tsukineko to name a couple. Let blue embellishments stand out against white cardstock too, for a classic, yet on-trend look. I have put together a set of cards that I hope will inspire you to consider adding a little blue to your next card collection. It’s a versatile tone as I hope you’ll see here. l
