WELCOME p15

Hello p46

Laura Dougherty

… and welcome to issue 57 of your new look Creative Cardmaking. I’ve recently returned to work after breaking my ankle back in March and just wanted to say a massive thank you to all the team here at Practical Publishing for all the hard work and dedication to producing Creative Cardmaking to such a high standard, as well as maintaining their own workload, in my absence. It’s been a really tough couple of months and I couldn’t have got through them without the help and support of my wonderful friends and fantastic family! This month’s issue of Creative Cardmaking is packed full of fantastic summery projects using a variety of favourite techniques and embellishments that we’re sure you’ll enjoy. Your gorgeous free gift this month comes from Polka Doodles and our Design Team certainly had fun designing all the projects in your pull-out guide starting on page 39. Andrea Gourley has some interesting ideas for making the most of baker’s twine on page 22, and if you are like most of us and have a jar of unused spare buttons from old clothes, Stéphanie de Geus shares some fun ways to add them onto your cards, starting on page 26. Keren Baker puts a modern twist on the traditional technique of spirelli in our expert guide on page 30, while Karen Osborne from Acid Drops & Whatnots shares a little vintage humour with us starting on page 48. If you love the look of glossy embellishments but are unsure how to go about creating your own, look no further and flip to our beginner’s guide on page 57. This, combined with all our usual fantastic competitions, giveaways and more make up this month’s Creative Cardmaking. So sit back, pop your feet up with a brew and settle down for a really good read.

Creativenews We bring you details of the latest news and events at craft stores around the country Happy birthday! Acid Drops & Whatnots will be celebrating its first year of trading this month. Designing their own range of humorous stamps was something that owners Karen and Niki had been threatening to do for years as they couldn’t find any funny images suitable for

adults, especially men. A year ago they finally bit the bullet and founded Acid Drops & Whatnots. All their stamp sets are made from premium photo polymer and, they are proud to say, made in the UK. They feature a cast of quirky characters inspired by the art of the 20s and 30s mixed with a dash of modern and vintage humour. This year will also see the exciting launch of the company’s first-ever range of Christmas images, which will definitely bring a smile to the festive season! To see the fantastic range of Acid Drops & Whatnots stamps visit www.aciddropsandwhat nots.co.uk

Perfect patchwork Joanna Sheen has launched a brand-new Everyday Patchwork stamp set, featuring small square and triangular patterns that can be co-ordinated to create stunning patchwork-effect backgrounds and toppers for your cards. With a retail price of just £14.99 we’re sure that with a little imagination this set will bring a wealth of patchwork-themed cards for all occasions. For more information visit www.joannasheen.com

Craft shop spotlight Shop name: Craft-e-Liza Shop address: 2a Newgate Lane, Mansfield, Notts NG18 2LF Manager name: Meryl Marriott How long has the shop been open? We will have been open at this address for three years in August. What made you decide to open a craft shop? As I had been teaching crafts and attending shows for many years I had accumulated an awful lot of materials, and whilst some thought it was the wrong time to do it I decided to open a shop and combine my need for a space to teach and to sell some of the items that I had.

6

Are you a crafter yourself? Yes, I have always loved crafting. Even as a child, I used to make all kinds of things from cardboard boxes. What are your three essential cardmaking items? A good sharp paper trimmer with accurate measuring guide, a score board, preferably with both inches and centimetres, and Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Inks. What crafts do you stock products for? We stock a wide range of items for cardmaking and scrapbooking, but we also stock items for parchment craft, the Melt Pot, jewellery making, sugar craft and cold porcelain.

www.creativemagazines.com

What are your favourite techniques? I love using all sorts of techniques but I especially like to try out anything new. Do you hold workshops/ demonstrations? What workshops do you have planned for the coming month? I hold regular weekly classes for cardmaking, cold porcelain and parchment craft and a sugar craft tutor comes in for our regular sugar craft class. What do you think are going to be the biggest trends in the coming months? Scary Mary 3D Keepsakes are just so impressive, The Melt Pot combined with UTEE creates

some fabulous effects and cold porcelain will be popular. What would you say are the most popular brands that your customers like to use? Ranger items such as the Distress Inks and Markers are always a hit, as well as the 3D Keepsakes from Scary Mary, and Hunkydory – my customers love the papers. What are your top tips for people new to cardmaking? It’s always good to discover little hints and tips and the best way is talking to crafters, so I would suggest finding a group or class. Failing that, subscribe to a magazine where you can find useful information and plenty of ideas.

A hive of inspiration

Krafty inspiration I thought you might enjoy seeing photos of two beautiful cards I’ve made with the free Kraftyhands papers and die-cuts included with issue 53. The paper and images were just lovely and suited my taste perfectly. Shani Thomas, by email CRC: Thanks for sharing these with us Shani, they look gorgeous and we’re sure whoever you send them to will love them as much as we do!

I was struggling for inspiration to make a Father’s Day card for my dad in June and had been putting it off in the hope for a ‘lightbulb moment’. Then I bought issue 55 of Creative Cardmaking and there it was, the Queen Bee cardmaking kit! I was spoilt for choice with the fantastic papers and toppers and all I needed to

do was add the finishing touches to my Father’s Day garden-themed creation. Laura MacDonald, Edinburgh CRC: We’re thrilled that our free gifts were able to help you out of a sticky situation! The card that you made for your dad looks fabulous and we’re sure he loved receiving it.

Special thanks I was delighted to have one of my cards (‘For a special friend’) feature in the Readers’ Gallery of issue 54, thanks so much. Many thanks, too, for a wonderful magazine that’s always filled with creative ideas and the free papers are so welcome. I can see the sense of having the papers separate from the magazine but now find that I mislay the free papers from its specific magazine – am I the only one who preferred it all together? Keep up the good work. Viv Man, by email CRC: We just loved your card entry for our Readers’ Gallery Viv, the colour scheme and embellishments

I just wanted to write and thank you for Creative Cardmaking issue 55. It was buzzing with inspiring free patterned papers and die-cuts. I’ve been a busy bee making the enclosed card to say thank you. My inspiration was at a low and you’ve sweetened it up! Diana Cradduck, Cummersdale CRC: Thanks for your kind words Diana, it seems that the Queen Bee paper pack and die-cuts have inspired many of our readers, as we have had lots of letters and cards sent to us using the fabulous free gifts!
