welcome
Welcome G
’day and welcome to the seventh edition of Cardmaking in Easy Steps. This is my first issue as Editor and I am excited to be joining Australia’s number one card kit magazine. Our focus this time is Love and Music, themes that lend themselves to beautiful uplifting cards with an elegant feel. And just the thing for our approaching summer of lazy hot days and a more relaxed pace, offering extra time for creative endeavours. Your kit is jam-packed full of an amazing selection of patterned papers, cardstock, die-cuts, stamps and embellishments. Best of all, our 68-page magazine contains simple-to-follow steps and illustrations that will both inspire you to create your favourite types of cards and provide a gentle guide for you to venture outside your comfort zone. Our Design Team’s expert knowledge and top tips make learning new skills and techniques fun and easy. We begin on page 12 with Janelle Graham’s 15 gorgeous cards designed using this issue’s kit. You’ll be amazed at just how far your kit can go. Tracey Orchard then suggests a few extra ways to make the most of the resin flower embellishments included in your kit, then returns on page 63 to share another way of adding dimension, this time using creative card blanks. Raw chipboard and die-cuts are versatile staples for cardmakers and Melissa Barnicoat’s designs on page 26 use these to create cards with zip, literally. A special addition in your kit this issue is a zipper – mixing hard and soft elements such as metal and fabric is a hot trend and an instant way of giving cards show-stopping edge.
Debra Hudson
One of the best things about cardmaking is that we’re able to extend the boundaries, and Elaine’s Powell’s shaped cards on page 39 will ensure you don’t have to restrict yourself to standard sizes and forms. Her designs are also included as bonus free templates inside the magazine. Of course, we also have some cards that will give almost instant gratification. Kelly Frunks has created a host of great makes on page 46 that will take no more than 15 minutes each, and on page 51 Christina Leahy rises to the challenge of designing a sketch that can be used in three ways – another really useful starting point for developing cards quickly. Alicia Barry brings bling to her textured cards on page 54, and while a couple of these are obviously ideal for feminine female cards, the others could easily be used for male birthdays. Mel Garner then shows how to get reliable results from the stamps in the kit, with tips on some very effective techniques. In all, we have 49 card ideas which you can create using little more than your free kit! But we know you are a very imaginative lot and you’ll no doubt be able to come up with loads more designs. Please share these with us – you could be featured in a later issue to inspire others. Email us at letters@practicalpublishing.com.au. Now it’s time to get started. Happy crafting!

Whether you’re new to crafting or simply need to take stock, here you’ll find everything you need to get started...
Tools of the trade
The paper trimmer Also known as a guillotine, this is a must-have for straight lines. A lightweight 12” trimmer is recommended, with a levered cutting plate. Among the brands favoured by our designers are Making Memories (www.makingmemories.com) and Fiskars (www.fiskarscraft.eu).
Adhesive solutions There’s a mind-boggling array of adhesives on the market, but to start with your best bets are: double-sided tape, which can easily be trimmed to size; 3D foam tape or pads to add dimension; and a roller glue that is easy to dispense without making your fingers sticky.
The craft knife There are many types of craft knife available, and they prove indispensable when it comes to cutting and scoring. Invest in one that has a changeable blade, or a scalpel.
Scissors A large pair of kitchen scissors is fine for nonprecision cutting, whereas you are likely to need a very small precision-tip pair for all the fiddly jobs that require pinpoint accuracy. You’ll also be thankful for a pair of small Tefloncoated scissors to cut sticky materials with minimum hassle.
The bone folder For crisp folds, you won’t go wrong with a bone folder. The smooth surface of the folder reduces friction for neater folds, helping you achieve professional-looking projects.
The cutting mat You’ll need two different types of cutting surface: a self-healing cutting mat for cutting, piercing and setting eyelets; and a Teflon-coated craft mat, preferably infused with glass for strength, non stick, and able to withstand high temperatures.
Cardstock You can never have too much card! Available in every shade imaginable and in different weights (thicknesses) to suit, cardstock is essential for matting, making your own card blanks, creating your own embellishments and much more. Buy pre-cut and folded card blanks for speedy creations! cardmaking in easy steps

Hooked What an absolutely wonderful magazine!! So far I have bought two issues of Cardmaking in Easy Steps and already I’m hooked. I have only started cardmaking in the last year, and I just love it. This magazine is so full of ideas and helpful hints for beginners to create beautiful cards. Here are some cards that I made with the kit from Issue 4. I do have a question though, where can you buy a scoring board from? Keep up the fantastic work and I'm looking forward to the next issue of Cardmaking in Easy Steps. Callie Drescher, Coringa QLD CMES: Scoring boards can be really useful for ensuring nice crisp folds and are a real timesaver when creating gatefold, easel, trifold or stepper cards. Some boards even help you to create envelopes, gift boxes and much more besides. The Crafter’s Companion Ultimate Pro, available from www.scrapbookboutique.com.au, covers 10 functions in one and even includes a bow maker tool!
Make do & craft I had planned to make eight cards using the Cardmaking in Easy Steps 5 kit but found myself a few hundred miles away from my craft room, without gadgets, gizmos and craft essentials! I therefore had to plan alternative methods. Armed with a Stanley knife, my dad’s metal-edged craftsman’s ruler, an old place mat as a cutting surface, my mum’s button box and embroidery thread, I designed and made these two cards. I think they show what can be done using a little imagination and little else. Shelagh Metselaar, via email CMES: Thanks for sharing your cards with us, Shelagh. They’re very nicely done, and the easel card in particular is so creative! The little seed packets and garden tools that tuck into the front pockets on the apron are a clever touch. These designs prove that you don’t need much more than the kit and a spark of imagination to produce beautiful and unique results.
