THE BASICS

You’ll also need... Computer & printer The free CDs will work on home PCs running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7. Mac users can browse the content files in their Finder window, but unfortunately won’t be able to run the software programs. Choosing a suitable printer for your needs can be a daunting task, as there are so many on the market. For a round-up of some of the best ones available, see our handy guide on page 129.

Paper to print onto

Card blanks You can either create your own from plain cardstock, or buy packs of readymade blanks. You’re then ready to get started on decorating them with your digital elements!

To make the most of digital content, you’ll need to invest in good-quality printer paper. We recommend that you use a weight of at least 120gsm. You’ll find printer paper at all good online and bricks-and-mortar craft shops, as well as stationery supply stores. For a wide variety of printable card, paper, acetate, vellum and more, take a look at CD-ROM specialist Crafter’s Companion’s website – www.crafterscompanion.co.uk

Scissors, craft knife & trimmer For cutting out intricate découpage elements you’ll need a pair of sharp scissors, plus a craft knife for any extra fiddly bits! Craft trimmers are a particularly useful piece of kit, as they allow you cut perfectly neat lines with ease. We recommend the Woodware FingerGuard trimmer, as it comes with several blades for different effects. Visit www.woodware.co.uk for stockist details.

Colouring mediums There are some lovely image stamps on CD1, and if you’d like to colour them by hand rather than digitally, you’ll need a suitable colouring medium. Crafters’ favourites include ProMarker pens, Copic markers and Spectrum Noir pens, watercolour pencils and Twinkling H2Os.

Finishing touches Once you’ve created your basic card design using digital elements from your free CDs, you may want to add finishing touches to make them even more special. Glitter glue, gemstones, ribbon, Glossy Accents, buttons and brads are all perfect for this, so raid your stash and see what you can find!

Adhesive There are many types of adhesives available, and most crafters will have double-sided tape, a glue runner, a glue stick and a glue pen in their stash. When using digital elements, 3D foam pads and/or silicone are must haves for adding dimension to your designs.
