anish design maestros Ferm Living were ahead of the pack with the launch of their geometric design cushions in muted pastels. It's a look that shows no sign of waning, and with so many similar fabrics around you can knock up your own version for a lot less. With their retro appeal and versatile palette, these prints are a great way to bring soft, warm spring colour to your sofa.

Love Sewing Loves…
The best new books on all things sewing and quilting
library
By Hugh Metcalf SEWING WITH LETTERS Nicola Tedman & Sarah Skeate, (£12.99, Ivy Press) Proving that Microsoft Word is an essential piece of your sewing kit, Sewing with Letters is a fun little book for both beginners and those with a bit more sewing experience under their belt. Projects range from basic makes, such as these tote bags (below), which can be done as easily by hand as by machine, as well as some more interesting designs using leather, suede and silk. The best thing is that these designs aren’t prescriptive and you can make your makes say anything you like.
CHLOE TELLS YOU HOW TO SEW Chloë Owens (£14.99, Cico Books) One part sewing book, one part 1960s-style children’s book, Chloë Tells You How to Sew is a hardback bound for retromaniacs. If you’ve got a love of florals, orange and teak furniture, you’ll find yourself right at home. Chloë Owens' projects are as delightfully off-the-wall as you’d expect from someone who has illustrated a cat taking on an upholstery project, with dolls and fun home furnishings in bold, vintage-inspired prints.

Love Sewing Loves… QUILT ME! Jane Brocket (£20, Anova Books) Though each of the 20 quilts in Quilt Me! come with piecing information and a step-by-step written tutorial, it feels like a book that’s about much more than just following instructions. Written in the first person, Jane Brocket explores the stories behind each of the creations and gives her ideas on the creative process. The new fabric quilts are gorgeous, but it’s some of the vintage, repurposed fabrics that really have us excited for our next project.
THE MAISON SAJOU SEWING BOOK Lucinda Ganderton (£19.99, Ivy Press) You might best know the famous French haberdashery Maison Sajou for its beautiful and eye-wateringly expensive craft supplies, but thanks to multi-crafter extraordinaire Lucinda Ganderton and The Maison Sajou Sewing Book, it just got a whole lot easier to get some Parisienne chic in your sewing room. The sewing projects inside are all basic, staple makes – bags, cushions, cases and cloths – given an extra dimension by pretty embroidered designs and step-by-step illustrations on the hand stitches you’ll need to use. Our favourite is the 1920s clutch – the perfect make for a weekend in The City of Love.
PRACTICAL STITCHES Nicole Vasbender (£12.99, Apple Press) 176 pages of sewing stitches shouldn’t make you this happy, yet even with just a flick through Practical Stitches, we’re feeling a whole lot more inspired by our sewing machines. If you’re the sort of maker who doesn’t feature too far past a zigzag stitch, this could be just the book to unveil your machine’s true capabilities to you. Each stitch also comes with a handy fact file entitled ‘also known as’, in case your machine has given the stitch a different name, which presser foot and thread type, its common uses and substitutes.

HOW TO MAKE:
SKILL LEVEL: i MATERIALS: i set of napkins i 1 fat quarter of Funky Owls in cream by Timeless Treasures i iron-on adhesive i co-ordinating thread i iron and ironing board i scissors
"Match your thread to the cream border of the owl so any imperfections are less visible" Nicole Daksiewicz
Follow the directions for the iron-on adhesive to stick to the owl fabric. Once the fabric cools, take your scissors and cut around each owl you would like to use leaving a small amount of cream as a border (this is where you will stitch). 1 Fold your napkin how you would like it to be at the dinner table. Peel off the backing paper and position your owl on your napkin. 2 To keep the napkins uniform, measure 2.5cm (1") from the bottom of each one.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1 Using scissors or a rotary cutter and cutting mat, cut each 20x20cm (8x8") fabric square into five pieces – one centre square of 10x10cm (4x4"), two short strips of 5x10cm (2x4") and two long strips of 18x5cm (7x2"). 2 Swap the centre squares around so each quilt square will be unique. Lay out all 30 quilt squares in a six-by-five-square pattern, as you would like the finished quilt to look. 3 Pin one short strip to one side of its centre square, right side to right side. Making sure square and strip are correctly aligned, sew the two together using a straight stitch. 4 Pin the other short strip to the opposite side of the square and stitch it in place in the same way. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to attach short strips to all 30 quilt squares. 5 Lay each quilt square face down and press open the seam allowances on all 30 pieces. 6 Pin a long strip to its quilt square, right side
to right side. Stitch it in place. Repeat with the other long strip along the opposite side of the quilt square. Repeat to make 30 squares. Press open the seam allowances. 7 With right side to right side, pin together two squares from one of the six-square rows. Sew along the edge. Add another square, making sure it is oriented the same way as the first, then another three to give you a strip that is six squares long. Repeat to make a total of five strips of six squares. 8 Press open the seam allowances on the back of all the strips. Pin two strips, right sides together, matching the seams as you pin. Stitch the two strips together. Add the remaining three strips. You now have a completed quilt top – a rectangle of six quilt squares by five. Press open all the seam allowances on the back. 9 Lay the quilt top right side up on the wadding. Trim the wadding, leaving 7.5cm (3") around all four sides of the quilt top. Lay the backing fabric face down, then put the quilt top and the wadding on top. Pin the

three layers together evenly with safety pins, making sure the backing fabric is square to the quilt top. Trim the backing fabric to the same size as the wadding. J Using contrasting thread, tack through all the layers to hold them together. Make sure all three layers lie flat and are evenly aligned. K Using a darning foot and with the quilt face up, start in one corner and work your way along the edge, stitching all three layers together. Stitch any pattern you like – along each block seam is easiest. Keep your speed constant, hold the quilt firmly and move it evenly. Once the top is quilted, remove the tacking and trim the wadding and backing fabric to the same size as the quilt top. L Starting in the middle of one side of the quilt, pin the edge of the bias binding along the edge of the quilt, right side to right side, turning over a small hem on the short end of the bias binding first. Sew the quilt and bias binding together leaving a 1cm (1⁄2") seam allowance. When you reach a corner, mitre the bias binding so it lies

flat. To mitre the bias binding, remove the quilt from under the presser foot without cutting the threads. Fold the bias binding over and to the right, making a diagonal fold at the corner. Keeping the diagonal fold in place, fold the bias binding back over to the left. Pin the corner, turn the quilt, then pin the binding along the next side and sew it to the quilt. Repeat on all sides. M Wrap the bias binding around the edge of the quilt to the back, folding its raw edge under by 5mm (1⁄4in). Hand-stitch the binding to the back of the quil. To machine-stitch the binding, pin the folded edge to the quilt, then machinestitch from the front so the stitches sit in the 'ditch' created by the seam that attached the binding in Step 12. i

Great for kids to make
Make Your Own Cats (set of six), ÂŁ20, www.janefoster.co.uk Jane Foster's bold, poppy prints are almost guaranteed to make you smile as you sew, and they're a great way to get kids involved in making. The Devonbased designer has produced a dazzling haul of make-your-own toy kits, bags, cushions, art prints and stationery, and if you're a fan of British and Scandinavian design from the 1950s and 60s, there's a lot you'll love here. For us, its a close run thing between this six-piece Make Your Own Cats set, her new screen-printed Birdsong cushion, or Tilda – the coolest, chicest rag doll a little girl could sew and own. For a closer peek inside Jane's world, her first book, Fun With Fabric, which features 15 projects to try at home, is out now through Collins & Brown.
