Praga Cars gathered crowds at Autosport show

I

t was not the first time Praga has exhibited at the Birmingham Autosport as a race car and a go-kart manufacturer, but it was the first time in 68 years when Praga exhibited as a road car manufacturer. The presentation was assisted by the new UK partner and dealer – a world renowned Litchfield motors who is among the best UK car specialist. The stand gathered crowds from the first day and among the global competitors the interest among both public and professionals was amazing. The stand presented a race car Praga R1S with an atmospheric version of the Renault-Alpine 2,0L engine rated at 235bhp. It was the first exhibition of the car on a global scale and the debut proved to be successful with one car sold and a full booking list for testing. The other car on exhibition was the Praga R1R, the R1 road legal sister car powered by a turbo charged version of the same engine. This unique vehicle sets a completely new perception on how fast can a road legal car be on a race track. The R1R is very difficult to compare to any other car and the interest we gathered in Birmingham proved to us that we have hit the sweet spot of our special cus-

tomers. You will be able to see its sheer performance at the Goodwood festival of speed where the Praga R1R was officially invited for running presentations. Autosport saw also the world premiere of the new Praga infotainment system which combines car configurator and visualization, user manual, setup configurator, online service diagnostics, sat-nav, racing telemetry and many other functions. This system in not

new only for Praga but it is new for all the race car manufacturers. The Praga R1 / R1R owners using this software will be able to compare their real data from race tracks via cloud sharing and even complete beginners will be able to set up and service their cars using this very sophisticated step by step manual with detailed animation. Warm welcome was given to the Praga R1 by all of the UK racing series organisers such

a Brit Car Endurance, GT Cup prototype or Time Attack. We are sure that the Praga R1 will be a very interesting and competitive addition to their grids and we hope that we will see many of them around. KARTSHOP AMPFING: Success Story of Praga’s Dealer in Germany In a small, ordinary municipality in Germany called Ampfing, there is an extraordinary man. Torsten Kostbade owns a company Kartshop Ampfing GmbH & Co. KG which has a great karting track, provides kart rental, runs a shop and so on. Moreover, Torsten is an official Praga dealer in Germany who leads a racing team. His track is perfect both for beginners and professionals. We came to Ampfing to ask Torsten a few questions.

Torsten, could you please describe your track to us? What is specific about it? What are the best parts? Well, for me, it is a very technical track – it is a difficult track for drivers due to its number of turns and hilly surroundings. You also provide a kart rental and visitors can actually race on the track where big races take place... People can basically just come and race? Yes, basically yes. This track is open for rental every day from 10 AM to 1 PM and then from 2:30 PM to 10 PM. Now about Praga – what do you like the most about Praga gokarts? For me, the quality is important – that is actually the best thing about Praga. Also the service and the whole team that develops and sells the karts is great.

KARTSHOP AMPFING

How do you feel about sales of Praga karts in Germany? I am very happy because we started to cooperate – I think – 12 months ago and they have sold very well. With Praga, it is better than it was before.

RACE REPORT

Successful end of season for PRAGA Kart Racing! Podium position for Jorge Pescador (KZ2). Seven pilots in the factory team Praga. Successful end of European season. This year’s European karting series are slowly coming to an end. Traditional end of prestigious WSK series is the WSK Final Cup which took place last weekend at Adria Karting Raceway. Text by Filip Schovánek and Photos by Tadeáš Marek

E

very year, the factory team of PRAGA Kart Racing takes part in this racing event. This year Praga was represented by seven pilots. After CIK FIA series, a class Mini is back in the big races. Carles Martinez, who is from the beginning of this season a regular factory driver, was joined by Peruvian pilot Rafaelito Modonese for whom this cup was an European premiere. Carles was able to stand out from the competition and get to the finals in which he climbed up 2 positions and eventually ranked 21st. Praga had three pilots in category KFJ. Eliseo Martinez had already won at Spanish championship this year and he continues to represent Praga team fantastically in international races, too. Alex Legnaro and Matěj Pavlíček are well-known factory drivers that represent Praga at Czech championship. Their goal in Adria was to gain as much experience as possible for the following season

among European drivers. Eliseo managed to climb up 10 positions in pre-final and eventually finished 16th. The most successful category was KZ2. The factory team Praga was represented by two pilots. Jorge Pescador is a successful and sturdy driver of the blue team. The new backup was a Czech driver Dominik Polcr. In Friday‘s qualification, Jorge managed to finish 6th. After Satudays‘ heats he was already standing on a imaginary podium. His stable performance resulted in third position. In prefinal he managed to improve his position even more and passed the finish line as the runner-up. As a result, Jorge could start from the first row in final. He was leading from the very beginning of the final. After various dramatic duels in the first half of the race, Jorge managed to become a leader again and he stayed in that position for 5 more laps. Later, pilots switched their positions and kept them safely to the very end of the race. Top 3 pilots

passed the finish line with a competitive edge. Jorge Pescador finished second which meant a podium position for his factory team Praga Kart Racing as a great end of this season. Jorge Pescador commented on his racing weekend: “The whole cup was very successful for us from the very beginning – we showed our speed. Praga chassis, IAME engine – everything worked perfectly so I could focus only on my performance on the track. I would like to thank the whole team for this season. I’m grateful for being a part of factory team Praga. The end of season was positive and I believe that next year we will be able to follow up on our results from this year. We will do our best towards this goal during the winter preparations.” 2015 season definitively came to an end. A part of PRAGA Kart Racing team will soon move to the USA where they are going to take part in SKUSA SuperNationals in Las Vegas. •

Multiple podiums at Las Vegas! Double podium in the KZ2 Jorge Pescador finished third in the S2 category All podium positions for Praga’s factory pilots Text by Filip Schovánek and Photos by Alexandros Vernardis

A

fter finishing karting season in Europe, a part of PRAGA Kart Racing team had moved to the USA where they took part in the SKUSA SUPERNATIONALS race the new track in Las Vegas, close to the newly remodeled WestGate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. Factory team was represented in 5 categories at once. The youngest factory pilot was Petr Ptáček junior who raced traditionally on the Formula K chassis in the TaG Junior category. Unfortunately, Petr had a technical problem in qualifying due to which he couldn’t start from the front rows in the heats. In spite of that, he was able to get better and better regularly so in the final he started from 25th position. Right at the beginning he took advantage of a crash in the first turn and managed to climb up to 13th position. Unfortunately, shortly before the end of the final Petr had to leave the competition due to a problem with a mounting of a radiator that loosened and therefore, all the liquid leaked.

RACE REPORT

American pilot Andrick Zeen competed with Praga chassis in the TaG Senior category. Andrick didn’t manage to finish one of the scoring heats so in the final he started from 42th position. There was not much space for overtaking maneuvers on the narrow track. He passed the finish line 31st. Schedule of the event was separated into two sections – morning and afternoon. This schedule allowed pilots to start in two classes at the same time so the factory team Praga and Formula K nominated three pilots in more categories. Spanish pilot Jorge Pescador (Praga) competed in both S2 and KZ2 categories. Patrik Hájek a Gary Carlton (both Formula K) started in the categories S1 and KZ2. Pescador stood out from the competition during qualification in the S2 category. His masterly performance continued in all of the heats in which he managed to finish with the fastest time. In the final, he started from the pole position. Most of the final race he was a leader of the entire field. Just a few laps before the finish line he dropped to third standing which meant a podium position for Praga team.

Patrik Hájek undertook a few practice sessions in the S1 category, however, due to his problems with an engine he was forced to quit. His teammate Gary Carlton was among the best pilots in the S1 category during the whole weekend and in the final, he started from the third place. Gary had already finished his ride in the KZ2 category before he started in the final of the S1 category and it was clear that he is perfectly ready for another race. During the whole race, his performance was invariably good and he managed to pass the finish line 2nd. So Gary is the second pilot who won a podium position for the team. The factory team had the biggest representation in the KZ2 category – Carlton, Hájek and Pescador. Starting positions in Sunday’s final were influenced by the last Saturday heat races. There was an huge crash right in the first turn. Jorge was forced to quit and he was limping his way back to his team. Unfortunately, the same thing happened to Gary who was forced to ask for a medical examination because of his injured left arm. Patrik managed to get to the front row of pilots. Due to a small collision with one of his rivals, he was sent off the track and eventually finished

15

20th. On Sunday, drivers started from the following positions: Hájek 5th, Carlton 7th and Pescador 14th. The final of the KZ2 category was undoubtedly one of the highlights of this racing event. Tribunes packed with people created an unique atmosphere for racing and every duel was loudly appreciated by public. From the very beginning, Patrik and Gary were seen among leading drivers. Other pilots were behind so it was clear that the winner will be one of factory drivers on the Formula K brand. After 25 laps, Gary was the one who passed the finish line first in KZ2 category, followed by Patrik who had the fastest time of the lap. Afterwards, Gary stopped next to the tribunes and thanked all the fans for their support. This step met public’s appreciation and fans cheerfully applauded and thanked all the drivers for a great results. For the factory team and both of his brands – Praga and Formula K – the SKUSA SUPERNATIONALS was a fantastic success! Pilots managed to get all podium positions – and the second position not only once! Las Vegas was a fantastic end of the 2015 karting season! •

Praga Kart Junior Team

R

acing Kart Muolo & Lotito company was born in 1995 from a collaboration between the two founders, Giuseppe Lotito, who owns a go-kart track in Fasano (Italy) and is a kart driver, and Enzo Muolo - his personal mechanic. They decided to create a factory inside the track, following a racing team and calling it “Racing Kart Muolo & Lotito”. Over time, early successes began to arrive, such as the Italian Championship in 1999 in the national 100 class, the following year the second place in Italian Championship, class 100 junior, the fifth place at the World Championship in 2007 in Sarno in KZ class, and many victories in various regional Championships.

The collaboration between IPK Praga and Racing Kart Muolo & Lotito began in 2011, when the company became an official seller of the IPK PRAGA products and technical knowledge. In 2016 IPK PRAGA decided to create the Praga Junior Team dedicated to young pilots in 60 mini, to help them to approach easily the world of professional karting. So IPK Praga decided to entrust the complete management of this new team to an outside company, choosing the Racing Kart for the experience in kart races and managing a racing team. Racing Kart Muolo & Lotito has created a brand new structure with specialists and technical resources.

In this season the team will take part in the most prestigious karting championships such as WSK Series and the Italian Championship with the best drivers in the international review such as the Spaniard Carlos Martinez and the Italian Francesco Pulito. The objectives to which Prague Junior Team aims are to to win and to always remain at the top of the charts , being in all competitive races, conduct numerous tests and trainings to test the equipment, promote the brand IPK Prague and make every effort to reach these objectives. In the coming years the racing team yearns for increased number of its pilots and so to grow, so that it will take part in all the best races and also in all most important Championships in the world, becoming one of the most important kart racing team in the world. •

CCS: IPK’s new take on camber and caster Text by TKart and Photos by Tadeáš Marek

22

KARTS

The manufacturer of Praga and OK1 and Formula K chassis has developed a new, futuristic system to adjust camber and caster. Let’s look at it in detail. Camber and caster are such important set-up parameters that manufacturers are always investing signifcant time and money to develop easier and more precise adjustment systems. A prime example is the new CCS (Camber Caster System) by IPK, introduced on Praga, OK1 and Formula K factory team karts a few months ago and, based on the excellent results obtained on track, now ready to hit the market.

Adjusting camber and caster separately: this is the key function of the CCS. Wait, haven’t we already seen something like this? “Sure, our Sniper system, which was made with the same materials,” says IPK. So what’s new? Basically, the fixed washer and spherical spacer on the top end of the system (see the render to the side). The two parts are meant to fit together: the first being conical, the other being spherical on the top end. This solution allows the stub axle spacers and the spindle pin to remain aligned as they work together, regardless of whether camber and caster are adjusted on the positive or negative end. In other words, there is constant support along the entire surface, for precise and steady braking at all times.

KARTS

Camber The adjustment range goes from 2 degrees positive to 2 degrees negative: just shift the top bushing and lock it with its keyways. Generally speaking, the lower end uses a neutral bushing, but the new system may also be used for the lower block to get a broader range: from 4 degrees positive to 4 degrees negative.

Caster The CCS guarantees to set the caster from 2 degrees positive to 2 degrees negative; 4 each way if you use the system also on the bottom portion. To adjust the caster, replace the top neutral bushing with a one-degree or a two-degree bushing. It might seem annoying, but, according to IPK, this is the only way to make sure the system won’t be subject to changes during use. In addition, since the CCS system is entirely snap-fit, once it’s reassembled, it remains perfectly aligned. Just loosen the top nut, slide the spindle pin out, replace the bushing, and put it back together. It’s as simple as that.

Handing over the Praga R1 is where our customer care begins Text by Jan Martínek and Photos by Tadeáš Marek

CARS

A good customer support is one of the essentials for Praga’s good reputation. After it has been finished, every car is thoroughly re-inspected and gets a run-in at the dynamometer while the engine performance is measured and logged. Each hand-out is accompanied by a „birth certificate“ with performance data, service book and manual.

Praga R1 hand out, briefing and initial set-up Praga offers the option to pick up the car at the factory and perform its shakedown together with the Praga racing team at the neighbouring Slovakiaring. During the shakedown all systems are checked including engine, breaks, drivetrain and the chassis components. R1 is a very specific car when it comes to driving style. A factory race driver will be on hand to brief the customer on specific driving styles and the setup variations. An initial training is also possible to arrange including passenger rides and simultaneous drive highlighting optimal race line using a shadow car and a radio coaching. It is easy to get a grip

CARS

on operating the car but the initial training forms an ideal base for revealing the car's true potential. The alignment settings are adjustable, together with roll bars and the aerodynamic set up. From the factory the car is set for neutral behaviour but with the assistance of our race car engineer, the factory driver will brief the customer on his telemetry data and analyses the areas which might need improving. The car's set up is then adjusted accordingly to suit the customer's driving style. Praga Cars chooses its dealers with regards to their professional approach and their experience with race cars. This ensures that each customer could get from his dealer the same customer support as from the factory team.

29

30

Maintaining the reliable Praga R1 is easy to operate and maintain and in its naturel it is a simple and reliable machine. All the standard service operations before and during the race are designed to be performed by just one mechanic which further reduces the running cost. The lightweight construction greatly adds to a very low wear and tear which is true for all the components: the engine, gearbox, bearings, tyres, etc. A regular oil change together with a thorough warm ups are therefore the only things the customer has to worry about.

31

Troubleshooting In case the customer believes that there is any issue with the car, our professionals are always ready to help. Each customer gets software for communication with the car. Any laptop with an internet connection is then enough to allow our IT specialist to connect with the car and analyse its systems. Praga is therefore able to help the customer wherever he is should there be any issue with the electronics or the engine of the car. Almost any fault could be detected and in many cases repaired or corrected. Otherwise a step by step guide is given to assist with detecting the cause of the problem.

What to do in case of a crash or a mechanical failure? The construction of the car is made lightweight, strong and durable. Flooring is strengthened by Kevlar fibres and, as well as the non-structural bodywork parts, can be easily repaired by a specialist composite repairer. All the main suspension components are machined from billets which makes them very rigid and also allows for an easy change of bearings and ball joints. Should still any component fail or the damage be too great for repair our dealers have most of the parts in stock and Praga cars have all the spare parts available to be shipped anytime and anywhere on demand.

Post sale services Praga value its customer’s opinions and regularly talks to them and reflects on specific requests and improvement suggestions. We also inform our customers about all the new updates and improvements we perform. For this year Praga prepared a complete new exhaust system for the Praga R1T which increases the power output and optimise the engine characteristics while shedding a significant weight. New is also the option to select a limited slip differential for all models. Naturally Praga offers also an active support and can provide a race car / electronic engineer, mechanic or a driver trainer for races around the world. We always share our experience with our customers as we believe that them wining is Praga´s victory at the same time. Our support services are not our business but our virtue of perfect customer care.

GE H80 Turboprop Engine by GE Aviation Czech The right choice for our SM-92TE Praga Alfa to comply the aircraft operators´ needs Text by Martin Kubovčiak | Images by GE Aviation Czech

W

e in Praga have chosen the engine GE H80 for our airplane because the GE technologies are built on a foundation that includes more than one hundred years of research, development, innovation and dedication. Thanks to integrating resources from a former Czech aviation company Walter, we can offer our SM-92TE Praga Alfa with stronger, lighter, and more reliable engine. Turboprop engines under GE´s wing are designed and built for business, civil, cargo transport and agricultural purposes and are operating worldwide. The H80 engine combines the robust turboprop design of the M601 series with GE Aviation's modern 3D aerodynamic design techniques, advanced materials and blisk technology to create a more powerful, fuel-efficient, durable turboprop engine with significantly enhanced high altitude and hot-day performance. With industry-leading maintenance simplicity, including no HSI requirement or fuel nozzles, the H80 delivers significant savings to owners and operators. Compatible with A-803 propeller, the 800 shaft horsepower H80 engine is loaded with performance features that provide expanded capability, flexibility and choice to the turboprop market. That is why we believe that this engine is the most suitable for our Praga Alfa airplane.

Rugged for a reason

Built to handle harsh conditions and extreme environments

No HSI Required 1040 Thermo HP

Every two seconds there is an aircraft powered by a GE engine taking off somewhere around the world.

HISTORY

Praga during the Second World War Text by Radim Širl | Illustration by Tomáš Mácha

T

his issue is dedicated to war times and their impact on Praga’s production and position as an important Czech factory. Praga’s vehicles took part in the WWI as well because several trucks and truck trains were employed by the military on the battlefields. These vehicles played frequently a crucial role of supplying the front lines with food, arms and reinforcements. However, armed and armoured vehicles were a common thing on the fields of the WWII and it is noteworthy that both world wars brought significant technological advances in almost every branch of industry. Praga participated on this progress since the early 1930s by its production of tanks, armoured vehicles and airplanes. Today we will immerse into the history and development of company’s tank vehicles which Praga began developing in 1933. The reason for a large demand for military vehicles by almost all European states was the unstable political situation of the 1930s. Praga was therefore responding to a rising demand of the Czechoslovak army which hoped to fortify republic’s defences in this manner. The first tanks were inspired by English VickersArmstrong construction and were called Praga P-1, sometimes also nicknamed “Little tank mk. 33”. Seventy P-1s in total were employed in the republic’s army and were commissioned to northern borders, where they participated successfully in several fire fights with Nazi Freikorps in 1937-1938. However, the two most important models are light tanks Praga AH-IV (1936 – 1950) and Praga LT mk. 38, later known as PzKpfw 38 (1938 – 1942). The former was equipped with a turret which was armed with one light and one heavy machinegun. AH-IV was primarily designated for export and was purchased by several armies during the late 1930s. Romania bought 36 vehicles, Sweden 49 and Iran 51 to strengthen their defences. After the WWII, even an African

country, Etiopia, ordered 20 AH-IVs for military purposes. In general, acquisition of light and heavy machinery presented an important and expensive step for every country. Therefore, they proved to be very careful when choosing the right armoured vehicle to join their forces. That is why Praga organized several outdoor demonstrations of its products in (both natural and simulated) difficult terrain conditions. For example, Sweden decided to acquire its 49 models only after a demonstration in Krkonoše mountains in 1937. The second eminent tank, LT mk. 38, was however renamed to PzKpf 38 (standing for Panzerkampfwagen – Armoured battle

HISTORY

vehicle) shortly after the Germans took over. The Third Reich’s forces unfortunately seized all 150 tanks manufactured originally for the Czechoslovak army in 1938. Wehrmacht’s officers and technicians quickly recognized the many perks of this vehicle and therefore continued with its production until the very last year of war. The first version of the tank

was equipped with a 37 mm Škoda cannon, two heavy machine guns and solid iron plating (8 – 32 mm). The occupation forces then continued with production of several versions of the tank including a recovery, command, recon and ammunition design. A special design with a flamethrower was developed in 1944; the flames were able to reach a distance of 60 metres and presented a real threat for the infantry. Swedish army ordered several LT mk. 38s before the war – and the contract was actually completed, but only in 1939 when the Germans supplied Sweden with 92 tanks. The company’s situation during the war itself is a topic for our next issue. As well as other important military products under the brand name of Praga. •
