Pitbull loves Praga R1
I
t’s not often that you find Praga as the star of an international music video, however this is the case for the latest music video for the song Greenlight by hip-hop artist Pitbull. The video features not one, but two Praga R1Ts. Armando Christian Pérez, more commonly known as Pitbull, accepts only the best in his music videos, and his latest video was definitely no exception as the video features two of the biggest hip-hop stars, Pitbull and Flo-Rida, racing in our cars: Praga R1T. The lightweight race car coupled with a Renault F4R 832 Turbocharged engine features among a number of eye-catching sportcars including a Lamborghini Huracán, Porsche 911 and BMW i8, however despite being in the company of these amazing cars the full-carbon bodied Praga R1T stands out over these as the main attraction. Featuring some amazing cars, beautiful women, great music and great racing scenes with the Praga R1T, it’s definitely worth a watch! For the video, search for Pitbull - Greenlight on Youtube or go to www.youtu.be/R7xbhKIiw4Y
The Praga R1T gets a power boost.
D
uring the 2015/2016 winter we redesigned the exhaust system for Praga R1T which allowed us to gain extra ca. 30HP in high RPM. That means the Praga R1T has now over 360 bhp. Also the torque has been increased in the high RPM for greater maximum speed. The new exhaust is also lighter while the durability has been increased. It uses exhaust muffler at the end instead of straight pipe, so the noise level is far below track requirements.

Denmark: Classic Car Race Aarhus
Y
ou might not have heard of the CCRA, but in Denmark it is very well known among the car enthusiast community. The Classic Car Race is the largest car event in the northern part of Europe. The amazingly well organised event located in the green parts of beautiful Aarhus presented real racing, historic fun racing, F1 presentational rides, super car runs and this year also one exquisite solo drive of the Praga R1 race car. Praga was invited to the CCRA as a guest and it had a very special position at the festival which has been founded 7 years ago by a Czech honorary consul Niels Brøchner. Czech Republic had its own exhibition

n the 11. 5. 2016 President Andrej Kiska visited factory C2i in Dunajska Streda, where Praga makes its carbon-fibre components. Andrej Kiska entered in the Praga R1 car and appreciated the level of professionality and quality of this cutting edge super-sport. •
space where Praga was invited to represent Czech Republic to the 40.000 strong crowds of Scandinavian spectators. The Czech ambassador Jiri Brodsky was also at the stand during the weekend where he was most helpful with the entire organisation. Being a star of a show was never hard for the Praga R1 but when Mr Brøchner sat behind the wheel for the running presentation all the cameras were pinched on the car with an extraordinary intensity. Niels covered lap after lap speeding up every round and at one moment it seemed that he will empty the tank doing so. „Although I already drove an ex-F1 car this morning driving the Praga was a thrill and I enjoyed it so much“ commented the founder after his presentational solo run.
The Danish spectators formed a firm circle around the R1 wherever it appeared and they asked about pretty much all there is to ask about the car. The quality of automotive culture in Denmark is hard to compare to and it came as a pleasant surprised of how much the Danish people new about the Praga brand and its history. The Classic Car Race Aarhus is an exemplary car event which has something for all, the true petrol heads as well as families looking for an interesting weekend program. It was a great honour for Praga to be invited and to be able to support such an event. We already have some great plans on cooperation with the organisation team of CCRA and we are looking forward to them all. •

PRAGA WAS PRESENTED AT GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED Text and photos by Jan MartĂnek

T
he beautiful scenery of Goodwood House premises with its racing genius loci ensures that there is no other event in the world which would attract so many wheel speed legends both mechanical and professional. Drivers like Lewis Hamilton, Jari-Matti Latvala, Jenson Button, Ken Block, Jackie Stewart, engineering legend Ross Brawn or motorcycle company owner and actor Keanu Reeves all helped to create a very special atmosphere of the FoS 2016. It was the first appearance of Praga cars at the festival to which it was invited with the lightweight super sport car Praga R1R. “Race cars for the road” was the official invitational title for the category which was newly created for the fast growing family of cars which are more at home at the race track than on public roads. The running presentation of the group which was merged with the super sports cars stably held firm attention of the crowds. The very short hill climb course was for most part
used to entertain the spectators and only one run throughout the weekend was officially timed and ranked. The presentations were full of burnouts, power slides, engine noise and flames and even in the company of all the most exotic contemporary supercars the Praga R1R had barely any competition when it came to entertaining the crowds. The official Praga test driver Tomas Vojtech who drove the car during the weekend did not tired of showing how easy is to light the rear tyres should you need too and accompanied by a large acoustics bangs the R1R kept on spitting flames. „It is a great honour for me to represent Praga at the Goodwood festival and I am glad that we could show the potential of R1R in front of so many fantastic people. The track is a little short but very fast and attractive for spectators. I believe that even against such a fierce competition we could be amongst the fastest here in the timed lap.“ Tomas Vojtech commented after his presentational rides. Although the timed lap has a little true comparison value it always sparks an ambi-
9
tions to compare all the most ultimate cars out there at one time and one place and hence it is well watched. The particular run ended up to be the wettest and muddiest run of them all. Ken Block together with a heavy rain just before the shootout prepared a very muddy track full of deep water puddles which suited the heavier cars ideally with four wheel drive and standard street tyres. With all of the electronic driver aids off Tomas was struggling with the lack of adhesion but still managed to have the fastest speed at the end of the first sector as he danced towards the 5th position overall. „The barely legal street semi slicks tyres we used were not an ideal choice given the conditions and as I did not want to meet the rye I took a very reserved approach. Ending up 5th was a pleasant surprise and it just shows how potent the car could be even in conditions which are far from ideal“ commented Tomas. The Goodwood Festival of Speed is truly the car festival to visit as you can see the most interesting cars there ever were and the 2016 edition added the Praga R1R to this elite. •

First race at Hungaroring I
n Hungary’s Hungaroring, Praga deployed turbo version with Aleš Jirásek behind the wheel. The atmospheric version was driven by Tomáš Vojtěch from team Autotechnologi and the starting list grew pleasantly due to the two Praga cars. From early training sessions, Jirásek was among the fastest in all categories. Qualifiers for both sprints and endurance were excellent – one second place and two fastest times in a crowded starting grid, which was filled with contemporary GT3 category cars and one Renault RS 01 special. The first sprint did not change into an absolute victory in the end. After duels with Miro Konopka, Aleš acquired 4th place overall and 1st in the D5 category. „We both raced in our own category, it would make no sense to risk collision just for the feeling of absolute ranking. I could draw blueprints of the rear bumper of his Lambo, off-hand,“ Jirásek joked at the finish line. The second sprint went significantly better. Several collisions before the start of the race eliminated quite a few of the most dangerous rivals and subsequent penalization of Jakub Knoll meant a rather easy way to a decisive victory. „Everything was excellent. We dealt with the start, where we usually lose some distance because of the lower output, and
the car ran like a dream,“ summarized Aleš. The hour-long endurance race ended in the fifth lap for Praga. The cause was damaged exhaust manifold gasket and the resulting loss of output. „We are a factory team, so we work on the development of the car and we push it to its limit – we are trying to find out how far the technology will let us go. From
time to time, that means that we go past the limits of reliability. We take it as a part of the development that allows us to improve our ordinary cars,“ commented Jiří Lojan, executive director of the PRAGA Cars company, on the retirement. •

RACE REPORT
nother race was held in the middle of May, two weeks after racing in Hungary; this one was on Austria’s Red Bull Ring. Just as the last year, there was a tough competition with many Division 5 cars and contemporary GT cars. Aleš Jirásek twice acquired 11th place (absolute ranking) in sprint qualifiers and 9th place in the endurance race. „The brand-new surface is unbelievably slick. Steerability was marginal, especially in wet conditions…“ The first race was a combination of wet racetrack and dry tyres. Aleš managed to push forward in the very beginning and then, despite a careful beginning, held a position near the front of the pack. He finished 9th, as his car started to fail in the last lap and he lost two positions. „During the briefing, we were told that there will be one pace lap and then the start. In the end, there were three laps and we were not prepared for that, so we ran out of fuel near the end. It was a good race, however. I am glad that competitors were careful on the half-dry track and did not take unnecessary risks,“ said Jirásek about the early morning race. The second sprint was on a dry track and went very well for Praga. Jirásek managed to fight his way from 11th to 3rd place in absolute ranking. „We took advantage of competitors‘ hesitation, managed to hold a great pace and we did the very best we could. I am totally satisfied, because we can not really match 500-horsepower Normas – they are something else, as far as speed goes,“ rejoiced Jirásek after finishing the race in which 37 cars partook. In the hour-long race, Praga R1 started from the pit, as a small technical problem could not be resolved in time. Aleš quickly went from the very tail to 10. position, but
Race at Red Bull Ring, Austria then he got stuck – safety car had to enter the track because of a violent collision and ranking was frozen for the last 15 minutes. Praga Racing Car team was also penalized for refueling outside of specified space and moved down to final 15th place in absolute ranking. However, ranking in the class did not change due to a larger lead and the team
kept the first place. „We wanted a video recording of the refueling mistake, but it could not be solved in the end. I race for more than 15 years, but I never saw such mayhem that Austrian race management caused here. But we are leaving happy, as we could not show much more than we did,“ concluded Jirásek the Red Bull Ring performance. •

RACE REPORT
Praga excelled on home ground
Praga Cars. Praga Grand Prix Slovakia turned out great for and added two second vehicles have won the Endurance race and one eight place in two sprint races.
P
raga R1Ts have been introduced to thousands of spectators during the Grand Prix of Slovakia. One of the company’s cars was under control of Aleš Jirásek, Praga’s driver during the whole FIA CEZ season and the current leader in the D5 category. In the qualifications he has grasped two second and one third place. Patrik Němec sat behind Praga’s wheel on Thursday’s training and in qualifications for sprint races finished sixth and seventh. He also participated in the endurance along with Tomáš Vojtěch and they delivered together the sixth best time. It was really hot when the Saturday’s sprint race started; needless to say that these conditions affected the whole race. Jirásek started on the third position and began the race successfully dealing with ambitious Miro Konopka, catching up with second Knoll. Breath-taking duel turned out better for Aleš who managed to seize the second place and won the D5 category. “The heat was extreme so I had to be really careful about the temperature of the tires. We expected better times for each lap but the second place is alright,” commented Jirásek on the initial sprint race. Patrik Němec had some hard times dealing with GT3 vehicles and Norma of Václav Janík as well. He finished on the eight place (and the third place in the D5 category). “I haven’t been in a racing car for a whole year but I was lucky to keep the pace and have competitive times with racers who participate in the whole championship. GT3 cars were slower in the technique-oriented parts of the race but I didn’t want to enter more drastic duels – so that the car would be in one piece at the end,” commented Patrik on his performance. Early evening Endurance race began at light but finished when the sky turned almost completely dark. This gave a magical feeling to the experience of the spectators. Jirásek stared on the third place and managed to get all the way to the front during the fourth lap and – what’s more – stayed first until the very end. “This was a great race for us! Rosina with Konopka gave me some hard time

with their GT3 Lambo at the end. Luckily, I had some solid lead at that point and so I’ve managed to finish first,” explained Praga’s driver at the finish line. Vojtěch and Němec enjoyed several duels with other drivers and still managed to finish on the fifth place (and third in the D5 category). “Our sensor broke down so we weren’t able to use the car’s full potential. But it still drove quite fast and we both have enjoyed the race,” stated Tomáš Vojtěch on this experience. It rained before the second sprint race and the surface of Slovakiaring was drying out slowly – so the drivers decided to change the
tires before the race. Aleš Jirásek fell down to the third place in the first lap but masterfully got ahead of Malchárek and his BMW M6 GT3 - and therefore got to the second place. He kept attacking on Rosina because his Lamborghini’s tires were wearing out much faster than Praga’s. There was especially exciting duel in the last lap but Rosina was able to handle Jirásek’s effort and have won the race. “It was great to compete with Štefan because you know that he doesn’t play dirty. The race must have been exciting for the spectators as well, because the outcome wasn’t certain until the very end. We

are really happy about the whole weekend and I’d like to thank the whole team for the job they’ve done on the car,“ stated Aleš with satisfaction after the race. Patrik Němec with the other Praga car wasn’t so lucky because he had to leave the race – there was a malfunction of the transmission during the second lap. Nevertheless he felt content with the overall experience: “I’d like to thank the entire team for this opportunity and hope that it wasn’t my last time. I’ve had tremendous fun throughout the whole weekend,” commented Patrik on this domestic race. Praga Cars Racing team is now ready to face the next racing event in Italian Mugellu where they will introduce turbo-diesel version of R1T and meet the competition in Gruppo Peroni series. And right after that is the time for Autumn prix of Masaryk Circuit. •

Formula K Italy NGM Motorsport Protagonist of the Italian Championship Karting ACI 2016
T
he partnership Formula K-Ngm Motorsport, born early this year by the collaboration of the Team Treviso with the Praga group, was an appropriate intuition from IPK’s vertexes. This is demonstrated not only with the continuous presence in a lot of categories and in the Italian Championship ACI Karting, but especially with the excellent results achieved by its drivers. An example over all Italian Francesco Celenta of Formula K chassis, driver of the NGM Motorsport, which dominates the ranking of the top category, the KZ2, with KZ10C TM engine, 125 cc with 6-speed gearbox, prepared by the team of Franco Galiffa. Not only the dominance was absolute, showing the gap over his nearest rival, but the same Celenta climbed to the top step of the podium finish in the top three of the championship trial! Also an excellent second place result from the same test in the WSK on the track of Adria. In the same category also competes also his teammate Edoardo Salmaso, who is in his debut in the top category he proved already, which has already proven its growth performance in the race even after the race finishing in 10th place in the last race of Adria. Even in OK Junior category, introduced this year for drivers aged 14 to 16 years, the results of
Team are certainly not worse! It bears witness to one of the first of the young general standings fourteen-years old Nicolò Genisi of Formula K Kart, TM 125 single speed motor, after dominating the first round in Castelletto di Branduzzo collecting several points in the second proof of Sarno. If that were not enough Treviso’s team is massively in the category PRO DRIVER Under and over with its standard bearers Riccardo Nalon, Gianluca Sgorlon and Giampiero Parolin. Nalon, among others, always very fast and powerful in all slopes, has managed in the last race Adria circuit to take home a second place! The Treviso team also competes in Italian championship Rotax with our cutting edge Natalia Balbo in DD2 category that int he first three races has achieved many podium finishes, and the small, gritty talent Filippo Bagnaschi rookie in the category Rotax Junior, in every race he show a growth Rossiniana! Competitiveness and passion thus distinguish this team, that behind the guide stops Nico Biasuzzi, Ermanno Feltrin and Moreno Fortuni, and all their mechanical, are holding high the Color Formula K and the Praga group! •

This is the region where in 1973 the first rollbar - shaped for the iconic Fiat 500 - came out of the factory (which was just a garage, then); this - also - is the production plant for the high-end items of the catalogue, and the starting point for the 1,3 million pieces, handled every year by the company’s warehouse and sold all over the world. Racing suits, gloves, boots… or else, steering wheels, rollbars, harnesses… everything you need to dress a driver, or a racing car, in safety and comfort. Our brief tour into OMP world starts from Genoa (and its Lanterna, the ancient lighthouse and city landmark) because this town

is a constant in OMP’s history. Founded by amateur racecar drivers Percivale brothers in the early 70’s just to assure safety devices to their car, the company grew up to be a powerful brand in both rally and racetrack worlds. In 2008, in the middle of a drastic change in the universes of both motorsport and economy, OMP changed hands. The new hands, however, were still “made in Genoa”: the ones of young brothers Paolo and Alberto Delprato. Not so obvious, in the age of global finance. Nowadays Paolo Delprato is the CEO of OMP, on behalf of the society he owns with the brother. Many are the milestones in the history of OMP. Amongst them, it’s worth to mention two episodes, both regarding Formula One.

The first throws us back to 1989: on a sunny April afternoon, the San Marino GP takes place in Imola. At lap four, Gerhard Berger’s Ferrari spreads off the track at Tamburello corner at an estimated 180 mph speed. A crash, and suddenly the car is engulfed in flames. The ghost of 1976, of Niki Lauda’s near-miss with death is kicked out in 26 eternal seconds, when the marshals, after extinguishing the fire, put the driver out of the car: he’s alive and well, the fire-retardant racewear saved his life, and that racewar is by OMP: the name begins to spread. One more milestone: 2010, Australian Gp, second race of the season, some centuries after Berger’s accident. OMP, in the meantime, has bound its name to Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher until his first farewell to races. The company has just changed, after having been out of the Circus for a handful of seasons (though alive and kicking in every other championship). The new management has decided to add the last piece to the puzzle of OMP production: a line of safety
belts, that’ll be used by Renault team. The debut is in Melbourne, middle of the night for Italian timezone. All the members of the management, each one in his own living room, stays awake and watches the race, without even notifying each other. As Kubica flies towards an unexpected podium, the managers start to text one other about the race: “Are you watching it? Fantastic, great!”. OMP’s comeback in F1 is accompanied by a P2 as the sunday’s sun rises: a night that Paolo Delprato still recalls as “a strongly good omen, a glorious moment”. Just two episodes, two small boxes where to close a history that’s inevitably bigger. OMP universe - just like the actual universe, in a certain way - is expanding. The catalogue includes over 4 thousands items now, with fire retardant racing overalls as crown jewel. Every suit is directly manufactured in OMP headquarters, as well as a number of further products, such as fire extinguishing systems, top end safety belts and custom racing seats. After achieving a prominent position in the racing world, OMP has made its entry in the top karting universe. A new, revolutionary line called KS 1-R has blossomed in 2016, with the highlight of an ultra light, completely printed racing suit: this has objectively been a technical shock in the karting world. And new surprises are about to show up in the next few months. •

T
he new RTK EVO was developed by IPK with the intention of bringing the feel of a racing kart to the world of rentals. The objective was achieved by bringing the technology developed on the racetracks the "rental" sector. Another two fundamental objectives of the project were the achievement of a high standard of safety and the durability of all the components on the vehicle. A new feature that distinguishes the new RTK EVO is the front bumper with a shock absorption system: the mechanism cushions the impact of the kart against the barriers and, at the same time, decreases the blow felt by the driver. Another important aspect is that the mechanical system also allows protects the plastics used for the front bumper. All the sides of the kart are wrapped in a modular system of bumper strips, fastened to the chassis by rubber inserts. Fully moulded by following the shape of the kart, they give the vehicle a sleek, aggressive look, while protecting the fairings kit. Two features make the bodywork of the new RTK EVO stand out: lightness and the speed of disassembly. The cover consists of three parts: the left side, right side and axle cover; its function is to prevent the driver from
coming into contact with moving parts, such as the engine and the transmission, as well as having been developed to facilitate normal kart maintenance operations thanks to a quick fastening system. As mentioned, safety also has plays a major part in the RTK EVO project: a number of solutions have been adopted to ensure the safety of drivers during the race. The roll-bar is the maximum safety element introduced in case of accident; connected to this system
are car-approved quick release safety belts, which keep the driver in the seat in a crash. The RTK EVO chassis derives from Praga Kart’s racing experience on circuits all over the world. It consists of 32 mm diameter chrome molybdenum tubes, reinforced at high-stress points to increase strength and the longevity of the vehicle, without affecting performance. Like a racing chassis, it is sensitive to adjustments and transmits a unique driving experience to the driver. It also allows

the caster and camber to be adjusted individually using eccentrics in order to find the right set-up for the kart both indoors and outdoors. The tank holds 8.5 litres of fuel, the wheel rims used are made of aluminium, the axle has a 40 mm diameter and is 5 mm thick, ensuring strength and reliability. Another accessory derived from the racing department is the hydraulic rear braking system, consisting of a self-ventilated 195 mm diameter disc and a mono-block aluminium caliper with two pistons, which ensure sharp braking at all times. The components of the chassis reflect the design philosophy of IPK, in which every accessory is machined from solid using CNC machinery and manufactured with the utmost attention to detail. The seat and pedals are adjustable to allow drivers to find the right driv-
ing position quickly. The seat is mounted on metal runners allowing about 10 cm of travel and the movement is controlled by a handy lever on the left side. The pedals can also be adjusted using a lever operated with a simple gesture by the driver. In this case, there is 20 cm of travel. The complete chassis weighs 155 kg, excluding the engine and fuel. The new RTK EVO introduces a "Cut Off" system that prevents the driver from accelerating and braking at the same time, a system that safeguards the longevity of the engine. The new Rental Praga can be equipped with three 4-stroke engines, the GX200, GX270 and GX390 manufactured by Honda, which provide both high performance and reliability. •

HISTORY
Praga during the Second World War part 2 Text by Radim Širl | Illustration by Tomáš Mácha
T
his issue’s history section continues with Praga’s situation during the Second World War. The last article was focused on Praga’s production of light tank vehicles and their usage during the war. This time we are going to look on Praga’s aircraft prototypes in the context of this era. For Praga, 1930s are marked with extensive aircraft production; needless to say that Praga was one of the pioneers in Czechoslovakia in this field with Praga Air Baby (or E-114) being the most famous plane of the company. However, Praga’s planes were mostly designed for civilian purposes - but this was about to change soon. The first greatest rise in aviation was brought by the First World War: countries at war needed to develop more efficient planes to gain advantage on the battlefield. The planes were especially useful for reconnaissance missions in enemy territory but airplanes were still in their infancy during the WWI. 1930s and the thread of war brought another remarkable advance in aviation and two main categories of war planes have emerged: bombers, slow robust planes designated to attack from above and fighters, small and agile planes designated mainly for protecting bombers or destroying enemy aircrafts. In 1936, there was a public procurement for military reconnaissance plane by the army of Czechoslovakia and Praga participated in this procurement, having decided to merge the reconnaissance and bomber type together. However, before the plane was ready to enter a serial production, Nazi forces had occupied Czech lands. Nevertheless, E-51 was a remarkable attempt by the company to develop an airplane of this kind.
To answer this call by the Czechoslovak air force, Praga’s foremost engineer Jaroslav Šlachta decided to develop a light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. The construction was completed in 1938. Unfortunately, the first flights of E-51 showed several defective elements which needed to be improved. This included overheating of the engine, insufficient aerodynamics and several other technical faults. Also, the wing design had to be improved and the turret at the bottom of the fuselage was changed for an in-built dirigible machine-gun. These changes, if completed, would probably lead to a serial production. However, the occupation forces entered the factory in 1939 and seized the prototype of E-51. The aircraft was subsequently sent to German engineers in Rechlin for study purposes. After this point, the fate of the aircraft is unknown.
HISTORY
The plane was a two-engine light construction. There were three crew members: one pilot plus two people to operate weapon systems. The plane was equipped by two machine-guns, one permanently fixed in the frontal part of the aircraft and one dirigible in the back. Length of the aircraft was almost 12 meters and it had a wingspan of 15.6 meters. Weight of the unloaded plane was 3102 kg and the plane was able to carry bombs up to 500 kg. Two engines Walter Sagitta had total power of 404 kW and provided maximum speed of 380 kph (235 mph). E-51 was also able to ascend up to 7 km. The main advantage of this airplane was its variability: the aircraft
was designated for scouting purposes as well as for bombing runs. However, most European air forces have chosen the combination of heavy bombers and fighters protecting them. E-51 was not able to carry a larger amount of bombs and its reconnaissance benefits would probably prevail, had the plane been used in combat. The case of E-51 serves as a great example of Praga’s situation during the WWII. Company’s production was left at the mercy of Nazi forces and their leaders decided about production or termination of Praga’s vehicles and aircrafts. But this is a topic for our next issue. •
