Boulder named as a top green city for families BOULDER – Boulder is taking honors for being green, claiming the No. 6 spot in the Best Green Cities for Families analysis performed by SmartAssest, a financial technology company. The analysis ranked 327 of the largest cities in the U.S. on metrics that reflect environmental friendliness and family quality of life. Falling in with such green and great places to live as Honolulu, HI and Ann Arbor, MI – Nos. 1 and 5, respectively – Boulder was noted for the “admirable” goal of becoming a zerowaste community by 2025, which requires that the city divert and reuse 85 percent of all waste. Currently, Boulder diverts about 34 percent of waste, according to SmartAsset. Boulder also rates well for the percentage of commuters who get to work by some form of environmentally-friendly transportation. At 40 percent, the city ranked seventeenth among the 327 cities analyzed. Top-ranked Honolulu was noted for its EPA air quality index of 27, the third best out of the cities in SmartAsset’s study, and for its low average household carbon footprint of 41.25 tons of carbon dioxide per year. College towns rated well
in the analysis, scoring more than half of the top ten cities. Boulder, Ann Arbor and Berkeley have long been active in the environmental movement. A growing number of Americans are concerned about protecting the environment. According to a recent Gallup poll, 64 percent of respondents say they worry about global warming a “fair amount” or a “great deal.” Sixty percent of respondents say the effects of global warming have already begun, and thirty-one percent believe that it will eventually. Parents, Millennials and Baby Boomers are among groups growing in concern about climate change. Parental organizations like Moms Clean Air Force, Climate Parents and Mothers Out Front are being formed by and for those who want to support climate action. And an increasing number of the two most populous American generations, Millennials and Baby Boomers, say the care about sustainability and are willing to pay more for it, according to a recent Nielsen global online study. Nielsen’s study found that Millennials (18-34) are the most willing to pay extra for sustainability – almost three-out-of-four of those surveyed responded

Fifty-one percent of Boomers (50-64) surveyed are willing to pay extra, an increase of seven percentage points since 2014. To find the best green cities for families, SmartAsset analyzed data on 327 of the largest cities in the U.S. Eleven metrics were considered, with six of these reflecting a city’s level of environmental friendliness, including the average household carbon emissions, the percentage of commuters who do not drive to work alone and the number of farmers markets. The remaining five data points measure the overall quality of life for families in each city, such as crime rate, unemployment rate and cost of housing. Data for the metrics is from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, FBI Uniform

MORTGAGE EXPERT
Ask these HOA questions before you buy BOULDER - If you’re considering buying a condo or townhome, it’s important to do your research. A condo or townhome complex usually belongs to a Home Owners Association (HOA), and unit owners pay HOA dues for items like common area maintenance, snow removal and insurance. Be sure to ask the following questions: Is the HOA well-managed and do many homeowners actively participate in the meetings? Obtain meeting minutes from recent HOA meetings and read through them. Is the HOA in good financial standing? Looking at the HOA’s records will show if it has sufficient financial reserves, if it’s imposed any special assessments, and how frequently HOA dues have increased in the past. Are the HOA dues a good value? Learn what the dues cover and determine whether you’ll actually use the amenities you’re paying for, like a pool or fitness center. Is the HOA overbearing or under

Spring home staging tips
SUZANNE PLEWES RE/MAX Alliance
LOVELAND – As the saying goes - “all the world’s a stage” - so here’s your chance to play your part with these spring home staging tips. If you’re looking to sell, these helpful recommendations might just give you a leg up in the market. Make a good first impression First impressions can
make or break the deal. If you even want to get your buyers to step inside, you need to make sure that your property looks attractive from the outside first. A landscaped and manicured front lawn and some flowers on the front porch will go a long way in setting the stage and creating expectations. Pack up your winter wardrobe Step up your spring cleaning game. I’m sure you’ve taken the time to make sure the windows are clean and the place looks fresh, but what about those closets? Everybody wants BIG closets! The fewer clothes you have in them, the bigger they will appear. So grab those non-essential items and pack them away for the season. Who needs
a reminder of winter this time of year anyway? Add bright colors While you’re at it – you might as well remove any reminders of dreary winter days. Brighten up your home with some color! Drapes looking dull? Replace them with some richer hues. Add a pop of color with some throw pillows. Bring some warmth to any room with some fresh flowers. It’s amazing what a bouquet of brilliant tulips or vivid exotics will do to enliven the space.
Light up the space Maximize the appearance of natural light wherever and whenever possible. Pull up the blinds, raise the shades – let the room be illuminated with outdoor light. Keep it airy with some light colored window curtains or breezy valances. Basically, let the sun shine in. And one of the most important spring home staging tips is to make the yard entertaining That’s right - just like when it comes to first impressions - making your home appealing on the outside is just as important
as it is on the inside. You want your buyers to envision themselves hanging out and entertaining in the yard. Create a seating area, plant flowers, add a bird feeder – do whatever you think will make the outdoor space inviting, habitable and homey. There’s more to a home than just the house – make your yard a place where people want to hang out and socialize. There you have it... a simple plan to set the stage for success. Play your part by ensuring that your property wows from entrance to exit with these practical spring home staging tips. Suzanne Plewes is a Broker Associate at RE/MAX Alliance in Loveland. LAWN AND GARDEN
Weeding can be fun BOULDER COUNTY On most of the house calls I do on sick lawns, conversation inevitably turns toward dandelions. Not because the weed is causing the lawn’s problem, but because many people want it out of the grass. So, when on a recent LawnCheck I spotted dandelions sprouting through the grass, I figured we’d get around to talking about them sooner or later. We stepped around them, talked over them, and strolled past them without any mention of the weed. We talked lawn care, disease suppression, and overseeding with nary a whisper of question on control. The suspense was killing me. As the visit drew near to a close, I figured I’d get the “dandelion mention” by asking if there were anything else about the lawn she’d like to discuss. Not a word about the cheerful little flower. Finally I broke, waving a hand towards the few dandelions and asking if she needed information on them. “Oh, I just pull them,” she said, “I have
this great weed puller.” She went to the garage and brought back a longhandled tool with four claws at the tip (Fiskars Stand-Up Weeder). Stabbing it into the ground with the claws surrounding the dandelion, she stepped on the foot platform and rocked the weed from the ground in seconds. Lifting the tool, she ejected the weed from the claws like shells from a pump-action shotgun. The sound was oddly satisfying. No wonder she didn’t want advice on controlling dandelions. She had something far more fun. And it does a great job on many types of weeds – thistle, mallow, or western salsify, for example. Anything with a central root is fair game. In Colorado, having a weed free lawn is rarely attainable. With the pressures of hot, dry summers, lawns don’t compete as vigorously as in other states where conditions are more moderate in temperatures and water. Unless the weeds are carpeting the ground
CAROL O’MEARA CSU Extension
more than the grass, digging them is a good way to keep things to a dull roar in the lawn. Bees love dandelions so keeping a few around for them is helpful. And the leaves are delicious in salads, on pizza, or sautéed as you would spinach. Like spinach, the leaves taste better before the plant has flowered. Using a hand-held weed puller is useful for working in flower or vegetable beds. The fork-tipped tool comes with long or short handles for working around plants. It pops the weed from the soil and saves arms and shoulders from the strain of pulling the weed. One plant pulling doesn’t eradicate is the most hated weed in our gardens: field bindweed (Convovulus
arvensis). Despite being a member of the morning glory family, there is nothing ‘glorious’ about it. It snakes through the garden. It entwines itself through branches, along trellises, and into every nook and cranny of the area. Pulling this plant results in a nightmare out of Greek myth – four hydra-like plants sprouting from the single plant pulled. Its roots reach 20 feet long and have many nodes for regeneration of sprouts when surface shoots are pulled. Stamina is required in pulling to control this plant because it must be done repeatedly and frequently, until the energy in the root system is exhausted and the plant can no longer regenerate. If pulling weeds to the point of obsession is not for you, mulching garden
beds is a great method of weed control. In order to control weeds mulch should be applied to a depth of four inches across the surface of the garden. Weed control fabric, when laid underneath the mulch may help, but research is suggesting that this fabric may limit water and air from getting to roots. HOME INSPECTION EXPERT
Home inspections worth the effort
BOULDER - After you have qualified for a mortgage, searched for a home, found one, made an offer that was accepted... next comes the home inspection. Time spent with an inspector can provide invaluable information about the home, how it works, and whether there are enough issues with the property to walk away from it or renegotiate the purchase price with the seller. Most real estate agents have relationships with home inspectors. Some buyers use those referrals, others prefer to find their June 10-11, 2016
own inspector by asking friends or searching online. Regardless, it’s important to vet an inspector before hiring one. It may be wise to begin your search for an inspector before even finding a property to avoid scrambling to find one to meet an inspection objection deadline. During your walk through with the inspector take notes about how things work and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Home inspectors expect questions and generally welcome them because they believe their job is to help a buyer make an
RICK JACQUEMARD
Flatirons Home Inspections educated decision about a home purchase. Items such as combustion air, filters, gas shut-off valves, and sump pumps are foreign territory to many
homebuyers. A home inspection is a visual snapshot in time. Everything in a home is in a constant state of deterioration so things can go wrong after purchase. Feel free to ask how much something will cost to fix. Some inspectors are comfortable giving a range. Others shy away from that because of the numerous variables involved, like the materials used and labor costs. Because the inspector is hired by the buyer cannot disclose information found during a home inspection without the buyer’s

sight for the visitor. Just minutes away from Longmont, Boulder and Estes Park, Gwynne’s Greenhouse carries one-of-a-kind container gardens and hanging baskets, and an unusual and eclectic selection of perennials, annuals, and indoor houseplants, as well as some special vegetables. Pottery, statuary, garden ornaments, garden style gifts and home decor are also featured. Perhaps the piece de resistance is the everexpanding Cut Flower Garden, where customers can create their own bouquets with the abundant blooms or simply meander among the paths for pure enjoyment – taking in the beauty of the colorful and spectacular flowers. Founder and Owner Gwynne Owen has loved gardens and the outdoors since her childhood in Ohio. “We had huge vegetable gardens and flower beds around the house. I also loved walking in the woods with my dogs to explore the wild plants and trees.” Then she moved to Colorado and was working in a law office as a paralegal when her father died and she inherited his brand new Toro key-start 1983 mower. It inspired her to leave her job and start a lawn mowing business in Boulder in 1983. Her ad in the Daily Camera drew in a customer, Bennigan’s Restaurant in the Village Shopping Center, who asked her to mow their lawn and plant a little garden. It was such a success that it led to more than a decade Daily Camera / Times-Call – AtHomeColorado.com
during which she planted all the beds at the entire Village Shopping Center, and also planted and maintained the florascapes for most of the prominent shopping centers in Boulder. “I was doing flower planting for so many clients that I wanted to grow unique varieties of plants to make my work outstanding, and to keep my employees busy.” So in 1994 she bought the greenhouse that is the linchpin for her garden center. Today she has a staff of eight dedicated employees to help with the greenhouse and gardenscapes. Every staff member has been with her for at least 10 years. “We are a small, independent garden center. We design our own container gardens and hanging baskets. We have unique varieties we grow from seeds, plus plant materials. Themes are evident: a high-altitude garden, a Victorian silly garden with dahlias, a theme of color that can be seen across the parking lot to give people ideas. We put the pottery display out front, then the colorful ‘Cut Your Own Bouquet’ garden in front of the Greenhouse.” The cutting garden “The key reason I created the cutting garden was because people would see us at the shopping centers deadheading (removing dead flower heads) to increase blooming and then they would ask if they could cut some of the flowers too. Of course I said ‘no,’ but the idea was born to create a public cutting garden. The greenhouse was run down when I purchased it, so it was ripe for creating a cutting garden to brighten it up. We used whatever materials were around - like bricks to make a maze with the flowerbeds. I mainly planted things that would grow tall so they could be cut to make arrangements.” The popular cutting garden draws people June 10-11, 2016
from near and far. It was created mainly for the public to enjoy, but also as an experimental site for unusual varieties of annuals and perennials to test their durability in Colorado weather. “This method of experimentation allows us to consistently provide the best of the new, old and unique plants for our customers,” Gwynne says. The cutting garden lasts until the first frost. Gwynne’s Greenhouse & Gardenshoppe is fun, economical and conveniently located. People come and cut their own bouquet of fresh flowers. They simply borrow a carton of water and some scissors at the front counter and begin wandering the garden paths. They may cut from whatever is planted in the ground. Most stems are 50 cents, though some specialty flowers are more. They can just ask a salesperson to clarify. “They can also cut from nearby shrubs to add some greens,” says Gwynne. Perennials, annuals and bedding plants “Perennials form the backbone of most great gardens, and are a very important part of our own cutting garden here at Gwynne’s Greenhouse,” writes Erica, the Flower Maven (Gwynne’s daughter), on gwynnesgreenhouse.com. “Perennials and shrubs such as lilacs, peonies, irises, and roses bless our bouquets in their stunning yet usually brief period of blooming. Annuals on the other hand live their short lives to the fullest. “Bedding Plants are mostly... annuals though some are actually temperennials (perennials in
temperate climates). Annuals... grow, bloom, flower and die in one season. They are used to give gardens all-season color and dramatic ‘pop.’ Annuals come in many shapes, sizes and sun tolerances ... we strive to carry a wide and unusual assortment for every gardener’s needs.” Gwynne notes, “We have unique varieties of perennials that others don’t carry. By June we have a beautiful selection of bedding plants and perennials, for shade, part sun and full sun. We offer a master list that people can carry. It caters to special needs, like rabbits in their garden or high altitude. “We are also sensitive to the awareness the public has towards plants that are neonic free. We do not treat any of our plants at this time and are cautious about the plants we purchase from other vendors. Just recently we released beneficial insects to control all the bad bugs, inside and outside the greenhouse. We recently released ladybugs, lacewings and praying mantis; ladybugs can eat 50 aphids a day. We carry the information you need to have these beneficial insects delivered right to your door, too!” Tomatoes “We grow a large selection of heirloom tomatoes, some for growing at high altitudes, like the Mountain Princess and Siberian, which have a short maturity. The Glacier can last through colder weather. A plum-shaped Italian tomato called Principe Borghese is used
Gwynne’s has unique varieties of perennials that others don’t carry.
especially for drying. We sell tiny 2- to 3-ounce red tomatoes, and tomatoes in various colors: black, green red, pink. We plant 50 to 100 varieties of tomatoes.” She grows all the typical greens, squashes and peppers, too, and offers a variety of mulches, composts and soils. Visit Gwynne’s Greenhouse & Gardenshoppe Gwynne’s caters to both novice and expert gardeners. The knowledgeable staff can help customers make informed decisions about which perennials and annuals work best in their area, based on altitude, drought-tolerance, pest resistance and other pertinent conditions. The greenhouse and gardens and other parts of the business suffered extreme damage in the floods. During much hard work and dedication to the restoration and improvement of her garden center grounds, Gwynne made wider aisles in all the shopping areas, raised the cutting garden beds and recreated a new maze with display areas to showcase all the fun yard art, statuary and pottery. Enjoy the beauty, bounty and fun of Gwynne’s Greenhouse & Gardenshoppe near Lyons at Highway 36 and 66, at 4559 Highland Drive, Longmont. Call 303.823.6818. For example, introduce a blue piece of art and then use a rug with blue accents, then add a blue toss pillow. • DON’T be afraid to mix blue with black. Once considered to be taboo, from fashion to home decor realms, dark blue and black are colors that are being displayed together. • DON’T paint a wall a deep blue unless it is an accent wall. Deep blue will likely overly darken a room if used as an overall color. • DON’T dismiss opportunities to introduce blue into your space in interesting ways, such as ocean- or water-inspired art or photography. Black remains a staple in home decor. It blends well with other colors and can add elegance to a space. The same can also be said of blue, especially indigo. Yes, blue is the new black. Deep blue has become a favorite for designers, especially those looking to use a dark, rich color without the harshness black can provide. For many homeowners and those in the design community, blue is a preferred choice to black, and it’s gaining popularity. When it comes to using deep blue or indigo, here are some tips to keep in mind: • DO mix deep blue with soft neutrals such as white and taupe. The blue can help make these colors stand out. • DO mix rich shades of blue with sharp contrast colors such as yellow or chartreuse. • DO map your pops of blue throughout a space. Color mapping is a technique in which one can repeat a color throughout a room.

DIY CRAFTS
A heartfelt, handmade card for Father’s Day By Sandi Genovese, Tribune News Service (TNS) When I was little, my dad and I played a game where he would ask me how much I loved him, and I would respond by stretching my arms apart as wide as they would go and hollering “This much!” I’ll bet you did something similar with your dad. I decided to make a card that would illustrate our little game with a cover that reads “Love You” and accordion-pleated pages inside that spell out “This Much!” I would be surprised to find a dad that would not be delighted to get this handmade card for Father’s Day, and it is surprisingly easy to make. Begin with a quick trace around your hand and cut out two of them from construction paper. Cut out a pair of paper cuffs for each hand and add pin stripes with a white pen and a button cut with a circle punch. Cut a long strip of paper
and accordion fold it into 10 equal sections. Label each pleat with letters to spell out your message leaving the middle two sections to be embellished with a heart. Fasten the accordion-folded strip to the inside of each hand, aligning the hands to each other and positioning the pleated strip to sit flush with the cuffs and the table top. This allows the card to stand up and shows off your hand-y work to dad and the whole family. And speaking of family, it’s always fun to get your kids in on the action, helping them to lend their hands to make the same card for their dad. In an age of Snapchats, e-mails and texts, a handmade card with a heartfelt message is sure to stand out, and I don’t mean just a little bit, but This Much! Wondering about widespread bathroom faucets
15 years in a row!
By Ed Del Grande, Tribune News Service (TNS) Q: Dear Ed: We need to choose a new bathroom faucet for our existing sink. The more information I receive the more confused I get and I don’t know what to do. I need to choose between a widespread faucet or a centerset faucet. To help me make the right choice, can you please give me details about widespread and centerset faucets? – Fred, Florida A: Welcome to the world of replacing bathroom faucets. Not only are you choosing style, you also need to choose a faucet type that fits your existing bathroom sink. For example: If you have a single-hole sink, you want to look for a single-hole bathroom faucet. However, when you have a three-hole bathroom sink, you usually need to choose between a widespread or a centerset faucet to correctly match the sink.
Two-handle centerset faucets are the standard compact models and measure four inches from the center of one handle to the center of the other handle. Widespread faucets measure at least eight inches or more between faucet handles. Also, with a widespread faucet, the spout and handles are usually three separate components. Bottom line: Get out your ruler and hopefully with this information you’ll now feel like you measure up to making your final faucet choice.
