“2017 A.D.”

Somebody asked me about a coin that was found dated 311 B.C. and asked, “How can that be?” The short answer is, “It can’t be!” Most folks know that “A.D.” stands for the Latin phrase “anno domini” which means “in the year of our Lord” - or the year Jesus Christ was born (not “after death”). So, “B.C.” is the time before the birth of Christ and “A.D.” is time after His birth. This method of dating marks the birth of Christ as the dividing line in human history. While it is true that the prophets predicted the general time frame of the birth of the Messiah, the actual time was not known until the event happened. Also, while the Bible does not give “B.C.” or “A.D.” dates, there are many significant “time pegs” in the Scriptures and secular history that give us reliable information as to dating events that happened before the birth of Christ. The “B.C.” and A.D.” system of dating was not implemented until several centuries after Christ lived and died, so any coin or other artifact dated “B.C.” cannot be genuine. A point needs to be made here: the birth of Jesus Christ, His life, death and resurrection are reliable and the most significant events in the history of mankind. That’s because, “In Him we have redemption, the forgiveness of our sins” (Colossians 1:14) and “there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). The question is, “What difference does “A.D.” make in your life?” Rio Evans is the preacher for the Cañon City Church of Christ, 1718 Franklin Avenue Office phone: 719-275-9696. In Loving Memory Elizabeth (Beth) Ford Boss ELIZABETH (BETH) FORD BOSS (102) passed away the 22nd of December at the Hildebrand Care Center in Cañon City. She was born February 5, 1914, in Carr, CO. to Roy O. and Mary Nettie (Trimble) Elam, Beth graduated from College High in Greeley, CO., in 1931, and UNC in 1935 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education. Her first teaching assignment was in Kanorado, KS, where she taught business subjects at the high school from 1935-1938 until her marriage to Adam Ford. Their son Bob was born in March in 1939, and they moved to Longmont, CO, in November. In 1942, they moved to Lyons, CO, where Beth taught business subjects at the Junior- Senior High for 35 years, retiring in 1977 as a Vocational Business Teacher. During those years she also did graduate work at UNC, CSU, and Western State. She earned great love and respect from her students as she cared about their success. In the words of a student: She made me learn whether I wanted to or not. She was also involved with her students outside the classroom sponsoring various activities. In 1968, she and Adam moved back to Longmont, where she did volunteer work in the office of the Calvary Baptist Church from 19771996. She was also a member of the retired school employees association, the Rebekah Lodge in Lyons, and a lifetime member of the Longmont Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. In her younger years, she liked to read, to play cards with her family, and to travel with Adam in their camper group. After Adam’s death in 1972 and her retirement in 1977, she enjoyed traveling with groups on bus tours. In 1983, she married Fred Boss, a neighbor and friend, and they continued traveling together. In 1996,

they moved to Cañon City. Fred died the following year. Beth was very proud to be still living at home on her 100th birthday. Shortly afterward, her physical health forced her into the nursing home. However, her mind stayed sharp right until the end. In the nursing home one could see her at her computer, playing solitaire, working jigsaw puzzles, sending emails or greeting cards. She also had her favorite TV programs that she would watch on her big screen TV, keeping informed by spending much of the time watching Fox News. Beth loved a good steak and her sweets. She loved puzzles of all kinds—her favorites were cryptograms, crossword puzzles, and on-line jigsaw puzzles. At 102 she may have been one of the oldest persons on Facebook and Skype. Those helped her to keep in touch with her family and friends around the country. Beth proudly displayed photos of all her family members on a large photo board in her room. She leaves her son Bob (Judy) Ford, grandson Chad (Annie) Ford, great-granddaughters, Taylor and Perry Ford, all of Cañon City; grandson Greg (Kenra) Ford of Lawton, OK; greatgrandson Michael (Megan) Ford and twin great-great-granddaughters Abigail and Claire of Baker, FL; great-grandson Zak (Sara) Ford and great-great-grandsons Aiden and Wylie Ford of Grandbury, TX and several nephews. She will be dearly missed by those who knew her and loved her. Beth was predeceased by her husbands, Adam Ford and Fred Boss, and her sister Carol Miller and brother-in-law Roland Miller. At her request no services will be held. A family graveside service in Longmont will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Wilson Funeral Home.

Free legal help available at Cañon City Public Library Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

Another tool will soon be available for individuals in need of legal assistance and do not already have an attorney. The first free legal self-help clinic available to anyone in need will be from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Cañon City Public Library, 516 Macon Ave. The service is provided by volunteer attorneys via computer link, hosted by the library and supported by the Fremont County Combined Courts. The attorneys will assist patrons one-on-one, on a first-come, firstserved basis in a private room, where they can visit with the attorney face-to-face through a webcam and computer screen. This program is not connected to Colorado Legal Services that offers legal assistance free of charge monthly at the County Administration Building. Through the Virtual Pro Se Clinic Program, 10 volunteer attorneys across the state provide the clinics, answering questions, offering assistance with forms, and explaining the process and procedure for legal issues in the areas of family law, civil litigation, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlordtenant law, veteran’s benefits and civil protection orders. “Salida has had one for a couple years, and this will be Fremont’s first,” said Becky Casey, Self Represented Litigant Coordinator for the 11th Judicial District.

If you go What: Free self-help legal clinics When: 2-3:30 p.m. the second Monday of every month. Where: Cañon City Public Library, 516 Macon Ave. Cost: No cost. More info: Call the library at 719-269-9020.

Through VPC, in 2015, 170 clinics helped 1,122 patrons in 15 counties across the state. Of those cases, one-third was domestic relations cases, one-third was general civil cases, one-sixth was property cases and one-sixth was probate cases. General civil cases included appeals, bankruptcy, collections, small claims, Workmen’s Comp and more. Casey said the courts have realized more and more people are representing themselves. She said in Colorado, in 70 percent of all divorce cases, one or more parties does not have an attorney, and about 60 percent of people in all other cases, excluding criminal cases, represent themselves. “Across the country, as well as in Colorado, there have been the formations of Access to Justice committees in each district to try to find ways to help provide resources for those individuals,” she said.

Kerry Alan Smith

Kerry Alan Smith was welcomed to his Heavenly home on December 31, 2016, after a courageous battle of cancer. He was born on Sept. 24, 1960, to W.T. And Betty Smith in Pueblo. Kerry lived life to the fullest. Everything he put his hand to do he did in a BIG way. He loved deep, smiled BIG, laughed often and did more in 56 years than most people do in 100 years. He worked in many arena’s, from petaling pot holders as a child, selling Mason shoes, moss rock and firewood as a teenager to Preaching the gospel, carpentry and selling Christmas trees. Then the last years of his life owning and operating Top Country Auto Sells. No matter what he did, he was successful. Kerry’s priorities were his children Steven and Betty and his family. We could call him anytime day or night. He gave words of encouragement, a hand up, a shoulder to cry on, but always a smile. He said on more than one occasion, “

Remember my smile.” He was a loving husband, son, father, brother, uncle, grandfather but most of all friend. He left his thumbprint on us all. In 2014, Kerry married the love of his life Sandy White. He often sang “ I’m a lucky man” because he found a pure deep love with Sandy. He is survived by wife Sandy, children Steven and Betty Smith and Glen And Jamie White, grandchildren Noah Brotherton and Marilyn White. Father, W.T. Smith. Siblings, Beckie, Steve, Scott, Debbie, Ann, Bill, Chuck and Cheri, their spouses, and countless loving nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his loving mother, Betty Smith, whom he missed everyday. A Celebration of Life was Friday, Jan. 7, 2017, at the Vinyard Christian Fellowship, 245 S. Raynolds, Cañon City. Arrangements entrusted to Harwood Funeral Home. Online condolences at Harwoodfunerals.com.

Competing on a national television show was the icing on the cake for Sweet Cheeks Cakery. The cake-decorating business recently competed in the Food Network’s “Cake Wars,” a reality competition series. The episode featuring Sweet Cheeks debuted January 2nd. Though Sweet Cheeks didn’t win the competition and the $10,000 prize, owner Gillian Marriott said she was happy to be able to compete on a television show. Marriott and her assistant Sheree Bostic were selected to be on the show after submitting multiple pictures of cakes and audition videos. Marriott said she learned they were selected to be on the show by the end of May and found themselves in California taping the episode by the end of July. Each episode of “Cake Wars” has a theme and Marriott and Bostic competed against three other contestants to create “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” cakes. “It was quite an experience,” Marriott said. “It was a lot of hard work and a quick turnaround during

the four days there to create the cakes.” During the episode, the cakes were critiqued by judges to see which team moves on. Though Sweet Cheeks was disappointed not to move past the first round during the “Batter Up” competition. However, Marriott is excited to start her own local give away in the coming weeks. One lucky winner will get the cake of a lifetime. Details will be in the January 17th Shopper. Marriott was proud of their work. Marriott has baked her entire life, learning from her mother and grandmother. She started Sweet Cheeks officially in 2012, and it’s been a blossoming business that turned into a franchise. The business specializes in weddings, birthdays and specialty sculpted cakes. Sweet Cheeks recently closed its storefront to launch new branding but can be reached at (719) 429-8428 or visit www. sweetcheekscakery.biz/ or www. facebook.com/SweetCheeksCakery. biz/

Kurt Zerby opens independent office in Fremont County Kurt Zerby has been serving the community's real estate needs for nearly 36 years, and beginning Jan. 2, he will begin operating through his own independent office for the first time. "I've looked at doing it several times in the past, things have come up to keep me from doing it," he said. Kurt Zerby Real Estate Group, LLC, is located at 1432 Greenwood Ave. Also part of the team are Ashley Reynolds, listing coordinator, Christina Gray, transaction coordinator, and a soon-to-be-hired buyer's agent. "I'm excited," Zerby said of his new venture. "It feels kind of freeing to be there by myself." After becoming a realtor in February 1980, Zerby was affiliated with Century 21 for 17 years, ReMax for 10 years and then Keller Williams the last 10 years. "We take a lot of pride in trying to be really good at what we do," he said. "Our motto is 'Slow down, do good work.' We are trying to be really methodical, and professional and really de-

tailed about our work so we can do a really good job for people." Going into 2017, Zerby expects to continue to be busy with real estate. He said Realty Times predicts 2017 to be as strong, or stronger, than 2016, going so far as to call it a potential banner year. Zerby said he can see that happening locally. "The market is really good," he said. "As a matter of fact, for December, it's usually one of those months that kind of slows down a little bit, but it's still kind of rocking right now." Zerby, a top producing real estate agent in Fremont County, is one of two Master Real Estate designees here, and he is one of the few local realtors who is a Certified Residential Specialist, Accredited Buyer's Representative, and Senior Real Estate Specialist. "(I've enjoyed) the people you get to work with," he said about his career. "There are so many different people you get to work with that are interesting, there are so many nice people out there," he said. "I enjoy helping

Kurt Zerby them. Almost every time I meet one of them and start working with them, it's like they are friends or family already." In upcoming years, Zerby hopes to grow his business and then be able to spend more time in ministry. For more information, call (719) 276-2500 or visit www. canoncityhomesearch.com.
