Betty was the sixth of nine children to be born to Michael and Helen (Vavra) Zabrusky. From childhood Betty, along with her family, attended St. Michael Catholic Church. She was proud of being a founding member of the Daughters of Isabella. Betty attended school in Cañon City graduating from Cañon City High School. After Helen Zabrusky graduation Betty began a lifelong occupation with Mountain Bell and AT&T. She started as an operator in Cañon City using the switchboard and plug system of the day. She briefly transferred to the Mountain Bell Office in Salida, Colorado and then to Colorado Springs, where she spent the remainder of her career. While with the Colorado Springs office, Betty was promoted from telephone operator to the Secretary of the Pioneer Club consisting of all the retired employees of Mountain Bell and AT&T. She delighted in planning retirement parties and other festive occasions during the holiday season and throughout the year. One of her fondest memories was the occasion when the Pioneers presented several soft balls to the Deaf and Blind school in Colorado Springs. The soft balls were engineered and constructed by Mountain Bell and would emit an audible sound thus allowing blind allowing blind children to play the American pastime of baseball. After completing her career with the telephone company, Betty enjoyed her retirement along with
her sister, Dorothy. They took many trips both in this country as well as abroad. When at home in Colorado Springs they volunteered several hundred hours of service to the U.S. Olympic effort particularly to the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating programs. They were very proud of the brick inscribed with the family name in the wall of the Broadmoor World Arena, as well as a brick in the clock tower in downtown Cañon City. Betty was an avid sports fan. She was a season ticket holder of Air Force football from the very beginning and Michigan State sports teams could always count on Betty’s support. Tailgating at both schools football games was a favorite time for her. Along with sporting events, Betty enjoyed time spent with sorority sisters and members of the St. Joseph Catholic Church community. Betty could always be recognized by her bright smile and red hair. In 2014, when Dorothy and Betty’s health began to decline, they decided to come back home to Cañon City. Since that time she has resided at Skyline Ridge Nursing facility where the nurses and staff have become a second family for her. She is survived by nephews, George E. Johnson, of Lakewood, CO, Ken Zabrusky; nieces, Patricia A. McFarland, Kathy Humphrey, Kris Zabrusky; and sister-in-law Betty Jo (Bernard) Zabrusky all of Cañon City. Somewhere Saloon celebrates anniversary, Thanksgiving Somewhere Saloon, 1208 S. Ninth St., is celebrating its one-year anniversary for its Cañon City location. Owners Donovan and Amanda Baggett previously were in Westcliffe for two years before moving to Cañon City. Somewhere Saloon is known for its smoked wings and original home-cooked meals. Besides the family friendly environment, they
offer live music, such as Lobo and Sheryl every Thursday night. The Baggetts are involved in the local music industry and want to support the community as much as possible. Recently, the restaurant continued its Thanksgiving tradition of opening its doors to anyone who needs a place to go for the holiday. Two days before Thanksgiving, Donovan fires up the smoker for the turkeys.
A buffet-style dinner is given to everyone attending at no charge. It’s also a bit of a potluck with people bringing in side dishes if they want to contribute. Donovan’s background is in music, traveling the country and playing many venues. He served in the Marines for eight years. The restaurant is thankful for all veterans and is partly why they open their doors to the community each
Thanksgiving for those who need a place to go. This year, the restaurant cooked 10 turkeys and served more than 75 people. Donations also were supplied from Mountain Wookies and Waggener. Those looking for a nice homecooked meal should stop by and meet the Baggetts’ amazing staff. Remember their slogan, “it’s 5 o’clock somewhere.”

Continue Christmas tradition with Brady’s Garden Center For more than 50 years, Brady’s Garden Center has been handpicking Christmas trees for its store. Started by owner Dean Brady’s parents, Dick and Rhoda Brady, the business began selling Christmas trees and products in 1961. This year, the tradition has continued with Brady and his brothers and staff personally selecting the trees from BLM land. The staff looks for the highest quality Colorado native white fir trees that will last longer and stay fresh. Brady’s Garden Center also has plantation trees, which usually are shipped in from Oregon and include noble fir and fraser fir. The center stores the trees in a semi-trailer to keep cool, and when on display, the trees are kept in water and in the shade to ensure they stay fresh and don’t dry out. Another family tradition for the Brady family is to have a flocked tree. Flocking is a natural-based spray/mixture that gives a nice color effect on the Christmas trees. Customers can select their tree at Brady’s and then asked for a custom flocking. The center offers multiple colors, such as blue, red, orange, purple and the traditional white. Dean said many people prefer
white because it gives the tree a snow effect for the perfect “white Christmas.” Brady’s Garden Center also offers handmade Christmas wreaths. Dean said as a child, his family would create and decorate wreaths every year to take to school teachers. The store creates handmade wreaths and can customize to suit the customer’s preferences, and they can watch the wreaths being made in the store Mondays and Tuesdays. Dean said he takes great pride in every tree and wreath sold at the store. He enjoys being part of Fremont County families’ traditions. He strives for the highest quality and lower prices than big tree farmers in Colorado Springs or Denver. Some people have traveled as far as Fort Collins to get Christmas trees and decorations from Brady’s Garden Center. Dean said to make this time of the year a little easier for families, the center will be open seven days a week through Christmas. For more information, visit Brady’s Garden Center at 1121 S. Ninth St., call (719) 275-1286, www.bradysgardencenter.com or find them on Facebook.

617 Main St. 719-275-6783 “Common Courtesy”
At the local Wal-Mart customer parking area recently, I observed that many shopping carts are not returned to the cart racks provided. Some folks just put their bags in their vehicle and drive away, leaving their cart to roll or be blown into another shopper’s car. It only takes a minute or two to put it where it belongs: so why do so many people drive off and leave them? Are they so busy they just can’t take the time? Don’t they care that they may damage the car of another? Do they think, “Somebody gets paid to round them up and take them into the store?” This may seem like a petty peeve but it may be a symptom of a bigger problem in our society: are we losing our sense of common courtesy, respect and consideration for others? I don’t mean to make this a blanket criticism of everyone: I see lots of folks taking the time and effort to do nice things for others, yet there are some who seem most concerned about old Number One! The Biblical point I’m getting to is this: the root of practically any sin you can think of comes back to one word - SELFISHNESS! Think about it: murder, theft, adultery, coveting (to name a few) all go back to selfishness! When one cares more about pleasing and gratifying self than he does others, he loves himself more than God and others! The Bible teaches us to respect, be kind and considerate of others: qualities that are sorely needed - and attainable - in our world today!
