She enjoyed her new home until the last few years, where she spent time in and out of Lutheran Hospital in Westminster with several ailments. She also spent time at Clear Creek Care Center, first in Rehabilitation and then was moved to the Nursing Care Unit on Jan. 8, 2016. On July 24, 2016, she had dinner, laid down to take a nap and never woke up. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Louis Edwards (8-9-1993), granddaughter, Carol Dena (11-23-2013), and son, David Louis (1-1-2014). She is survived by: son, Edward Clifton, grandson Daniel Edward, daughter-in-law Linda, grandson Mark David, great-granddaughter, Marisa Ann, and Carol and Scott’s children, Zoe Mackenzie and Robert.

Dorothy R. Arko

Dorothy Arko was born and raised in Cañon City. She loved everyone, (especially children) and everyone loved her. She married Lou on Dec. 21, 1939, in Raton, N.M. She and Lou had David Louis and Edward Clifton. The Royal Gorge Post Office opened Dorothy R. Arko June 1, 1949, with Dorothy as acting Postmaster, she was commissioned in April of 1951. In October 1988, after 40 years at the Post Office she retired. Dorothy and Lou loved to fish together and were big Denver Broncos fans and enjoyed dancing, entertaining friends and hunting arrowheads. Dorothy belonged to the BPW, Rebekkah’s and other

Cari Leanne Kerkman

Cari Leanne (Crossman) Kerkman was born October 9,1967 in Canon City, Colorado. She lived a bright and joyous life. She passed away at her home in Boise, Idaho August 5, 2016, with her husband and family by her side after bravely fighting an impossible battle against metastatic melanoma. Cari graduated from Canon City High School in 1986, where she was a varsity tennis player and captain of the CCHS pom squad. After graduation, she studied Fashion Design at Colorado State University, and Deaf Education at the University of Northern Colorado, in Greeley. She married Andrew Kerkman on Sept. 14, 1991. Along with being a mother of 5, she was a National Dance Alliance instructor, competitive judge,

and professional choreographer in Oklahoma, Colorado, Oregon, Alaska, and Hawaii. She was a Coach and Administrator for Les Boise Jr. High, and the Timberline High School Varsity Cheer Coach from 2010-2016. Cari is survived by her husband, Andrew and their five children, Torri, Colton, McCall, Keegan, and Katherine; her mother, Sharon Crossman; brothers, Kent (Connie) Crossman, Mark (Stephanie) Crossman and their children, Courtney, Kaleb, Clayton and Zachary; soon to be daughter-in-law Kaitlyn Dean; as well as enumerable beloved extended family and friends. She is preceded in death by her father, William Crossman. In lieu of flowers, The “Cari ‘Coachie’ Kerkman Memorial Scholarship Fund” has been created in her memory for those who wish to make a contribution: c/o Timberline High School 701 E Boise Ave. Boise, ID 83706 (208854-6246). Lula Amelia Benson

Lula Amelia Vories was born in LaVeta, Colorado on Oct. 9, 1917, to Eugene S. and Ruby Capps Vories. The family moved to Walsenburg in 1920 and Lula graduated from Huerfano County High School in 1935. After her graduation, the family moved to Grand Junction, Colorado where she graduated from Grand Junction Junior College in 1937. She spent several years as a country school teacher. In 1939, she attended William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri. In August, 1944, she married William (Bill) H. Schmidt of Redwing, Colorado. Bill preceded her in death in January, 1961. She moved to Canon City and worked for the State Division of Parole for the next 18 years.

Lula Amelia Benson Lula married Roy A. Benson in 1964, who preceded her in death in 2003. Traveling was a focus of her retirement, usually with family to accompany her. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Canon City for well over 50 years and she loved working in her church. She did hours of volunteer work at a care center and with the Fremont Concert and Fine Arts Center. She is survived by three grandchildren, Mickey Schmidt, of LaVeta, Colorado, Emit Schmidt, of

Morse, Texas, and Helen Whitener, of Pueblo. She also has three great-granddaughters, three great-grandsons, and three great-greatgrandchildren. Also surviving are two nieces, two nephews, and several great nephews and nieces. Funeral service, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2016, Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment, Huerfano Cemetery in Gardner, following reception. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to First Baptist Church of Canon City or the Southern Chapter of The Territorial Daughters of Colorado. Mike Angel Gonzalez

Mike Angel Gonzalez (birth name Miguel) passed away suddenly of natural causes on August 1, 2016 in Canon City, Colorado. Mike was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba on May 31, 1931. His parents were Jose Gonzalez and Maria Amparo Brito (de Gonzalez). Mike’s father, Jose, passed away when Mike was a young boy. Mike immigrated to the USA at the age of 18 with his mother. He met his wife to be and love of his life, Theresa Mary Sadowski, in Chicago, Illinois and they married July 14, 1951. Mike became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America on March 22, 1955. Mike and Theresa had five boys from 1953 through 1968. His beloved Theresa passed away on Nov. 1, 1990. Mike was a machinist in the Chicago area and retired in 1991 from R.F. Mau. In his retirement he spent time living in Wisconsin, Florida, Michigan and Colorado, the latter of which he called the red planet. He is survived by his children, David Michael (Rosa Tapia), Richard Joseph (Ernestine Flores), Michael Allen (Sarah Sirovina), Robert Anthony (Iris Borges), John Patrick (Dawn Wilson); grandchildren, Vincent, Yvonne “Bonnie”, Valerie, Eric, Mason; great-grandchildren, Annabelle, Luna, Amberlee, Yzobella, and Quest. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Evelio (Elisa Ramona Guerrero), Onelio (Aurora Lugo), Obilio (Helen Mazanares), Concepcion (Ramone Romero). Mike and Theresa started their family in Chicago, then moved to Wood Dale, IL (1960-1973) and then moved to Schaumburg,

over their hearts during the national anthem before the start of a ballgame on TV. Mike was an avid White Sox, Bears, and Black Hawks fan. Sarah Hooper Hill, 28, passed away July 25, 2016. She is survived by her husband, Delshon Hill; her grandparents, Tom and Rita Wilhem; daughter, Sabe; stepdaughter Janae; sister, Cheyenne Wilhelm; and brother, David Howe.

Ben Martin Haines went to be with the Lord on Aug. 8, 2016. He passed away suddenly from complications to diabetes. He was the middle child of Billy and Charlottee Haines, born in Unionville, MO. His parents moved their family to Cañon City in 1964. He was raised and went to school in Cañon City. He married Tracy Parnell in 1979. They have a daughter, Shana Haines Seibl. They divorced in 1980. He married Teresa Paul in 1993. They have two daughters, Jena and Ja. They divorced in 2012. He worked for Fremont Concrete after high school for 15 years. He was currently employed by Walmart Neighborhood Market in Colorado Springs as an Assistant Manager. He enjoyed reading and fishing.

He is preceded in death by his grandfathers, Woodrow Haines, Carl (Happy) Jones and Merle Baker. He is survived by his parents, Billy and Charlottee Haines of Cañon City, CO. Sisters, Pamela (James) Haines Threet of Cañon City, CO and Sarah Haines of Branson, MO. Daughters, Shana (Chris) Seibl of McPherson, KS, Jena and Ja Haines of Colorado Spring, CO. Elaine Freymann Blair Elaine Freymann Blair was born March 7,1929, to Ottillia Elizabeth Berner and Vincent Peter Freymann in Omaha, Nebraska, Elaine was the youngest of four children. Elaine spent her childhood years in Omaha, the family then move to Elaine Chicago, Ill. Upon finishing Freymann Blair high school in Chicago, she began work as a secretary for International Harvester. Elaine enlisted in the first groups’ of women in United states Marine Corps. In May 1956, Elaine married and had three children. The family moved to Aurora, Colorado then continued their journey to Aspen, CO in 1972. Elaine married her second husband, Marvin Blair and moved to Delta,CO, Elaine often recalled that in 1979, she found a renewed relationship with Christ and focused on dedicating the second portion of her life in service to him. During this time she began attending conferences in support of the Prison Ministry at the Delta Correctional Center in Delta. As Elaine’s vision and passion for reaching out to men and women in the prison system grew, she made the decision to move to Cañon City. While in Cañon City, Elaine began volunteering at Colorado State Correctional Facilities multiple times a week. She rarely missed weekend Seminars as well as the

weekly Bible Studies, sharing her beautiful voice with up to 150 inmates and volunteers at a time. She regularly attended bible studies and conferences at the Skyline Correctional Facility, Fourmile Correctional Facility and Colorado Territorial Facility in Cañon City. Her ministry grew to traveling to Florence and ministering to inmates at the Federal Correctional Institution(medium security),the United States Penitentiary(high security) and the Fremont Correctional Facility. Aside from Elaine’s work with Prison ministry she also enjoyed many years working at the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce, being a campsite host with her sister Phylis, volunteering at “Loaves and Fishes”, attending church, being the Quartermaster for the Royal Gorge Detachment 1318 Marine Corps League, making several trips a year to visit family, and making time to escape to the mountains to camp as often as possible. Elaine went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, the 18th day of June 2016. She is survived by her daughterVirginia, sons, John and James, stepson, Terry, 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Her family and friends will miss her deeply and will carry on the legacy that she begun. There will be a Celebration in the Chapel at noon Aug. 27 at E Free Church, 3000 E. Main, Cañon City. Please come join to celebrate her life and homecoming. Light refreshments will be served after the service.

“What is Truth?” (Part 2)

“Buy the truth and sell it not” (Proverbs 23:23). That’s more than just good advice it is divine wisdom. Last week we said that truth is objective: truth is also absolute and attainable for every responsible person! Sadly, many today do not seem very concerned with truth. In fact, some folks seem more willing to believe a lie rather than to believe the truth. Someone said, “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” A question: “How important is the truth to you?” Most folks are involved with buying and selling: let me suggest that buying the truth is the greatest transaction you can ever make, because it involves your most precious possession: your soul! If learning and holding onto truth is not important, why did Jesus and the New Testament writers spend so much time and effort warning us to beware of false teachers? (from Matthew 7:15 to Revelation 22:18). Truth is objective or Jesus could not have said, “Thy word is truth” (John 17:7). Truth is attainable or Jesus could not have said, “If you abide in my Word, then are you truly my disciples, and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32). Paul wrote, “So faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17). Without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6).
