CCA MESSAGE Craig Scott

As I write this article for the Manitoba Charolais Bulletin, I am closing in on 6 months as the General Manager for the Canadian Charolais Association. The old saying “time flies when you are having fun” very much applies. We have been busy at the CCA working to increase services for our members. We now offer new tests such as the Homo-Polled test and are in the home stretch with our Leptin test so we will be able to offer that test to our members in the very near future. We are in the final stages of working with our health care providers to offer our members a health care benefit package. We will be doing an E-blast and mail-out soon with all the information in it. In other news, I attended the Beef Industry conference in Calgary this past July and found it to be very informative and I highly recommend attending if you get the chance. I also attended my first MCA AGM and Pen show in August. Hats off to the MCA for hosting a great event. I hopped onto a flight to Brandon this past week to attend the Manitoba AG Expo and although the number of cattle was down, the quality sure wasn’t. A great set of cattle were there representing our breed regardless of the poor fall weather we have had. Thank you to the breeders who took the time to come out and support the show. I would also like to congratulate the Manitoba Junior Association for being proactive and jumpstarting their fundraising efforts for upcoming CCYA shows. I will be attending all the major shows this fall, so if I have not had the pleasure of meeting you yet, please introduce yourself. If you have any questions about anything happening at the CCA, I would love to answer them. (Or find out the answer from Lois or Haylea.) Looking forward to the future of this great breed! JUNIOR REPORT Madisyn Robertson Hello everyone! The Manitoba Juniors have been very busy since the last issue. Fifteen Manitoba youth attended the CCYA Conference in Weyburn from July 24 to 27. As usual, it was full of fun and learning and we congratulate the SJCA for an incredible event! We enjoyed a lot of laughs, especially with the Barnyard Olympics! Full results are in the October Banner, which can be found at charolaisbanner.com. The Manitoba representatives to the Canadian Charolais Youth National Board are Keegan Blehm and Megan Perih. Thank you to Keegan and Megan for letting their names stand. As we are such a young group Manitoba would have lost one of our voting positions for a year until we had another member of eligible age. For more information on the Canadian Charolais Youth Association please visit their website https://youth.charolais.com/about/ ccya/. There are lots of programs and resources available to junior members. The August 2-4 weekend saw six of us Charolais kids represent Saskatchewan and Manitoba at the Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup in Neepawa. It was a great weekend of interacting with other youth from different breeds, lots of interesting learning and tons of fun. Congratulations to Zach Baron and Kamryn Gilliland winning Grand & Reserve Mixed Breeds Champion Females respectively with their Charolais entries. Thank you to the MB Youth Beef Roundup Committee for a successful weekend. After two busy weeks of Junior shows, I am not sure who the most upset it was over – the parents or us kids! If you haven’t attended a junior show I strongly encourage you to check it out. You don’t need to have an animal to attend and I guarantee the knowledge and friendships you will gain will be well worth it. We decided to try a Progressive 50/50 starting in September with the draw to be made at Ag-Ex. This fundraiser far exceeded our expectations, raising $1352. Melissa McRae was the lucky winner of the other $1352. Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets! I am sure we will be making this an annual fundraiser. There were six Manitoba Juniors participate in the Ag-Ex Junior Show. Congratulations to Brynn Steppler for exhibiting the Grand Champion Female with Steppler Miss 98F and Zack Baron for having Reserve Grand Champion Female with Hidden Lake My Moo 1G. Brynn Steppler was also the Overall Pee-Wee Champion Showperson! The prize committee provided each participant with a Sullivan comb and the winners received beautiful show stick bags and chairs. Our 2019 Bull Sale Fundraiser was extremely successful. We will be reaching out to all breeders to see if they would continue to allow our fundraiser as a small part of their 2020 bull sale. Please watch for those letters soon! Our next meeting and Christmas Party will be held on November 11 in Brandon and new members are welcome to attend. On behalf of the board, I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and hope that 2020 is prosperous! Sincerely, Madisyn Robertson

THANK YOU HARD ROCK LAND & CATTLE (PAUL & DALYSE ROBERTSON)

The Canadian Charolais Youth Association offers a number of programs and incentives throughout the year for juniors to start or grow their own Charolais herd. The genetics program allows junior Charolais members to receive two free straws of semen from a bull that Genex, Semex or Select Sires offers. Check the CCYA website in February for the application form. The Buy & Show Program provides a monetary rebate to juniors who purchase their own Charolais or Char-cross animal, with additional money available if the purchased animal is then showed. Up to $125 is available for rebate. The purchase incentive program allows juniors who purchased a Charolais animal the opportunity to awarded 2 free straws of semen from the CCYA semen inventory list. A bill of sale must be presented and sent to the CCYA youth Coordinator. The CCYA also has two scholarships that are available. First, the Travel Opportunity scholarship provides youth members with a chance to receive funds in order to travel while attending an event involving the Charolais breed or the cattle industry in general. Second, the Leadership Scholarships are presented at the conference and show. Funds are raised through the Semen Auction. These awards recognize senior members on their contribution to the Charolais breed and their leadership among other Charolais youth members. If there are any questions or how to apply for all these great programs visit the CCYA website or contact one of the national board members.

PUREBRED CHAROLAIS BREEDER OF THE YEAR Sunblade Charolais - Tyler & Nicki Stewart

Sunblade Charolais of Foxwarren, MB is owned and operated by Nicki and Tyler Stewart. A family operation that got us started in the cattle industry helping with our parent’s commercial herd, using Charolais genetics for as long as either of us can remember. Our purebred venture started with our first purchases of purebred Charolais cattle in the Fall of 1994 and officially establishing Sunblade Charolais in the Fall of 1995. Over the last almost 25 years Nicki has not only been a member of the Foxwarren-Solsgirth Beef Club, but a leader for 10 years as well, attended multiple CCYA Conferences in Manitoba, Ontario and Alberta, and held Director Positions on the MCYA Board for the CCYA Conferences in Dauphin (2002) and Portage la Prairie (2006). Tyler has been a member of the Foxwarren-Solsgirth Beef Club, attended multiple CCYA Conferences in Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta, and held the position of Treasurer on the MCYA Board for the CCYA Conference in Portage la Prairie (2006), as well as represented Manitoba on the CCYA National Board. Tyler is also currently a Director on the MCA Board and the President of the Foxwarren Ag Society. Along with the help of our parents Bill & Donna building our name and growing our herd has been a slow, but steady process which has seen us grow to just over 60 Purebred Charolais and a small Commercial Herd. Over the years we have been a part of different Bull and Female Sales and appreciate everyone who has supported those sales. Getting out to as many shows and events as possible to learn more about and promote our breed/industry, while meeting and networking with other breeders across Manitoba and Canada is something we strive for and hope to do more of. Lastly, Thank-you to our fellow breeders that have supported and encouraged us over the years! It makes being in an industry full of ups and downs that much more enjoyable.

COMMERCIAL CHAROLAIS BREEDER OF THE YEAR

Darcy & Barb Kozack

By: Joan Airey Darcy and Barb Kozack were named Manitoba Charolais Commercial Breeder for 2019. They ranch south of Rossburn, Manitoba. Darcy and Barb began farming together at Darcy’s family farm in 1992 taking over from Darcy’s parents. At that time Barb had a veterinary practice in Rossburn and she jokes Darcy was one of her best clients. For as long as Darcy can remember before he and Barb took over his parents farm his parents used Charolais bulls. .

“We run a hundred and twenty cows and usually have about three quarters calving in the first cycle and about ninety per cent have calved by the second. We see the value in good nutrition and the importance of feeding adequate trace minerals and vitamin supplementation in all aspects of our cattle program. Our area in Manitoba tends have a severe copper and selenium/ Vitamin E deficiencies in our feed and my years in large animal practice have taught me to be very aware of these problems and to address them properly. I think every veterinarian should own a herd of beef cattle to really learn this industry.” said Barb Kozack. They calve their cows in March and April and background the calves until February of the next year. Generally they sell the calves at Heartland Livestock in Virden or Brandon. Their high quality Charolais cross steers and heifers are fed and managed to be ready for the feedlot. They raise their own replacement females. “We really appreciate quiet cattle as we spend every day working with them. We look for cows that are productive and easy keepers that will stay in good shape. We look for sound thick bulls that will sire good carcass animals as well as producing good replacement females.” said Kozacks’. The Kozack’s are totally cattle ranchers growing their own hay and renting some extra pasture and hay land and buying cattle feed grains. “We have always been strong advocates of a good vaccination programs in our cattle. It is much more economical to prevent a lot of disease by using good vaccine programs and good nutrition and management. Healthy animals will always bring the premium and this will become increasingly important in the future as beef producers will have fewer options for antibiotics due to development of resistance to more and more of the antibiotics in use. I have always tried to educate my clients on the value of preventative medicine.” said Barb. Darcy and Barb have been around cattle all their lives. Barb grew up on a beef farm near Grandview and also was a 4-H member and now helps occasionally with the local 4-H Riding Mountain Wranglers and as well as helps with the annual horse show put on by the Rossburn Ag Society. She believes 4-H is a really important educational tool for children. Darcy and Barb have both been very active in their church, and Darcy was director on the church board for several years and was church president for a term. “Our parents instilled strong work ethics into both of us and taught us that anything worth doing is worth doing well. Add to that the quality of the great Charolais breed and life has been good for us!” said the Kozack’s

2019 BMO FARM FAMILY OF THE YEAR HTA Charolais - The Airey Family

HTA Charolais is a fourth-generation family farm owned and managed by the Airey family. The Airey family has been in the purebred Charolais business for over forty-six years, since Harry and Joan Airey purchased their first Charolais heifers in 1972. Currently, the operation consists of 150 purebred females with an annual bull sale in March. The farm is located west of Rivers, Manitoba. HTA Charolais is currently owned by Shawn and Tanya Airey, who bought the herd from Harry and Joan (Shawn’s parents) in 2013. Shawn, Tanya, Harry, and Joan are all involved in the day-to-day operations of the farm. Tanya and Shawn are also raising their two children (who will be the fifth generation) on the farm to help them understand how agriculture takes care of nature. Both children have participated in 4-H since preschool. Shawn and Tanya are involved in the local 4H club to support their children and to teach them about the importance of caring for the land and the community. Tanya and Shawn are actively contributing to the agriculture sector in Manitoba by continuing to develop the husbandry and management practices of HTA Charolais to produce better cattle. Moreover, both Harry and Shawn have been active members of the Manitoba Charolais Association to improve the Charolais breed in Manitoba. Shawn is currently Past-President of the Manitoba Charolais Association and serves as the Manitoba Charolais Association’s representative on the Canadian Charolais Association. He sits as Chair of the Breed Improvement Committee which is responsible for moving the breed forward within the cattle industry today. Tanya was part of the organizing committee that hosted the National Charolais Junior Show known as CCYA in Brandon, MB in July 2018. This event brings youth together from all over Manitoba and across the country and includes a variety of individual and team activities that develop valuable skills for future endeavors in the agricultural industry. HTA Charolais welcomed the participants and their families to their farm as they hosted one of the educational components of the conference. HTA Charolais is located on land that includes various soil types and has creeks running through it. To ensure responsible land stewardship, the Aireys closely monitor pastures and forage ground to ensure best grazing and growing practices are followed and to avoid creating areas where a lack of moisture leads to erosion or runoff, which would negatively impact fields and waterways. In January 2016, HTA Charolais was named Manitoba Charolais Purebred Breeder of the Year. In 2017, HTA Charolais raised and sold the highest selling Charolais bull in Manitoba HTA Contender 605D.

Sitting at home in Australia I continue to reflect on the past month of opportunity and lifetime memories. My time in Canada flew by, I am so eager to return. In May I was awarded the Australian Charolais Youth Ambassador for 2019. This entailed travelling to Weyburn Saskatchewan to attend the 2019 Canadian Charolais Youth Association conference and show. Canada has always been a country that I have wanted to visit. The opportunity to represent Australia and attend CCYA was a very exciting and rewarding experience. I wanted to extend my time in Canada as far as I could meaning flying out the day after the Australian Charolais National events and returning straight back into the University term. During my time in Canada my aspirations were to visit Charolais farms, tour cattle, meet new people and make lifelong friendships and memories. I believe I achieved all of this! I was welcomed at Regina airport with an excited Candace By and a quick selfie to mark my safe arrival. Candace and Helge were very welcoming and very enthusiastic chaperones. After a beautiful supper I was on my way to my first farm visit.

My tour began with Michael and Candace of Hunter Charolais at Roblin. My time at Hunter Charolais was spent touring and working with cattle, baling hay, the odd Vet call with Candace and a few days spent touring Manitoba. The program at Hunter Charolais is similar in some aspects to home. I enjoyed seeing the performance of the genetics we have introduced into our herd. I have learnt a lot from my travels and time spent on the farms, I look forward to using this knowledge and putting some of these ideas into practice. I spent the following week at High Bluff Stock Farm with Carman, Donna and Erin Jackson at Inglis. I enjoyed viewing and working with the cattle at High Bluff Stock Farm.

The performance, style and uniformity within their herd is very impressive. I was able to grasp an understanding of the different genetics and how they are performing. Donna and Erin were also eager to show me around Inglis and wider Manitoba, including; the Five Prairie Giants, Clear Lake and the Riding Mountain National Park. Along our travels we managed to see a huge variety of native wildlife which was very exciting. My next visit was with HTA Charolais with Shawn, Tanya, Chase and Blake Airey. HTA had organized to attend the Harding Fair where Chase and Blake competed in the cattle classes. The Harding Fair is very similar to our local shows in Australia, I enjoyed the day spent watching the cattle classes and the involvement of the youth in these events. We toured cattle and spent time discussing bloodlines. The exceptional temperament of the cattle at HTA was evident. Tanya also introduced me to Tim Horton’s and Cow Town describing Brandon’s store as only a smaller store; I was amazed walking in and finding a whole wall of boots!

I then spent my final days in Canada with Kelly and Julie-Annie Howe of Howe Farms. I was amazed with the scale of the Howe’s embryo programs and how successful this program has been. Kelly explained their contract with the City of Moose Jaw for the effluent water for irrigation of their crop. We are currently experiencing one of the worst droughts Australia has ever seen, I could really appreciate the collaboration and the advantages this system has provided for both businesses. Kelly also introduced me to the Canadian Baseball league, spending my last night in Canada watching Regina vs. Moose Jaw These friendships and memories will last a lifetime. Thank you to all my host families Hunter’s, Jackson’s, Airey’s and Howe’s and all the Charolais members that made me feel welcome at CCYA. I look forward to coming back to Canada in the near future!

Attending CCYA 2019 as the Australian Ambassador was the most rewarding opportunity. The International Exchange began on the 23rd of July where all the International Delegates met and spent a day in Regina to recover from the jet lag and tour the history of Regina and the Canadian culture. The International Delegates reigned from 6 countries; Australia, Hungary, USA, New Zealand, Ireland and Astonia. The following day we made the eventful journey to Weyburn for the commencement of CCYA, with a smell of skunk in tow… The week was smooth sailing from then on! I enjoyed the youth initiative to have everyone involved and to ensure everyone was enjoying their time and getting the most out of CCYA. The highlight for myself was the keep and cull section. I believe this is a crucial part of every operation, there is no right or wrong answer it was all based on your opinion and thoughts. I was interested to learn how differently the youth had placed this class and their emphasis on the different traits. I was delighted to be announced the 2019 International Grand Aggregate and would like to thank everyone involved in providing this invaluable experience. The major difference that was evident to me was the way CCYA was run, with the Youth committee but also the layout of the herdsman groups. I really appreciate the idea that all age groups are dispersed, the seniors are there to guide their herdsman group to work as a team as you would a real cattle show. In Australia this layout is not included in our Charolais Stampede, I believe bringing this system back to our youth events would encourage the youth to socialize, make new friends, learn new skills and most importantly work as a team.

A TRUE LEADER IN CANADIAN BEEF AGRICULTURE Ernest (Ernie) Henry Esau

Article from www.manitobaaghalloffame.com, photos from Lois McRae In 1951, Ernmore Shorthorns began with Ernie’s purchase of two purebred Shorthorn heifers. Thinking that the breed was getting too small, Ernie set his sights on improving the breed. By selecting better breeding stock, Ernmore Shorthorns would become bigger framed and better muscled than other Shorthorns of that era. In 1955 Ernie married Irma and two years later, in 1957, they purchased their own farm—Ernmore Farms. That same year, Ernie officially showed his first animal. When the federal government decided to wind down the herds at their research farms in Brandon and Indian Head, Ernie took advantage of the opportunity by visiting these herds and personally selecting some very influential sires. These herds had been closed for many years and all selection had previously been based on performance. The sires Ernie selected were bigger, thicker and had more growth than most other Shorthorns in North America. As Ernie would often do, he looked at the size and structure of the animal instinctively knowing that they could be bigger and better. While having no formal training in animal genetics, Ernie was quick to practise line and cross breeding which ultimately resulted in Ernie becoming a trendsetter with his Dual-Purpose Polled Shorthorns.

Ernie spent a short but “expensive time” with the Maine-Anjou breed, which included raising the first polled Maine-Anjou calf ever born in Canada. However, Ernie quickly turned his sights to the more commercially coveted Charolais breed. After assembling a polled Charolais herd from cows and calves across North America, he crossed these with full French Charolais bulls. The results were impressive with Grand Champion prizes and top selling animals at places like the Denver Livestock Market, the Toronto Royal Winter Fair and the Canadian Western Exhibition. In order to ensure that improvements to the industry were realized around the world, Ernie sold semen from his championship bulls and embryos from his championship cows to places as far away as Australia. Ernie’s abilities and achievements would often come up in a variety of circles including well respected universities. Agriculture professors often espouse that he was the one responsible for driving significant improvements in the beef cattle industry. Ernie’s highly regarded reputation earned him hundreds of awards including the prestigious Builder of the Breed award from the American Shorthorn Association. Always one to give back to the beef industry, Ernie served on the boards of the Manitoba Shorthorn Association and the Canadian Charolais Association for many years. He was a livestock judge throughout Canada and the U.S. and a renowned guest lecturer. Ernie and Irma were most proud of their family consisting of six children, twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

JOAN’s KITCHEN THERE IS NOTHING BEYOND A GREAT STEAK! INGREDIENTS

I hate to see the snow come because I am not one for barbecuing in the cold. Yesterday in a conversation with Joyce Stewart an icon from the Charolais Office in the 1970-90’s, she was annoyed with all the beyond meat products showing up in stores in her area and her concern that children maybe not getting proper nutrition.

½ cup canola oil

Earlier this summer in conversation with John at Total Farm Supply I told him if he wanted steak on the barbecue when he came out for supper he’d have to warn me a day ahead. He was told while on a cruise by a chef lecturing on barbecuing a perfect steak the following advice. It was what I believed that the steak has to be completely thawed and at room temperature when you barbecue it to get the most tender and tastiest steak.

3 mashed cloves of garlic

Personally I let the steaks thaw the night before and put them in a homemade Teriyaki Marinade the first thing in the morning.

1 cup soy sauce 3 Tablespoons brown sugar 1 Tablespoon fresh ginger root Marinate the meat 4 to 12 hours, refrigerated. Personally I take the steak out of the fridge two or three hours before Harry barbecues it.
