2021 has been an extremely challenging year in the livestock industry in Manitoba with the widespread drought. Hopefully everyone reading this is able to gather up enough feed and is able to take advantage of the drought assistance programs the government has announced. The Charolais cross calves continue to bring a premium at the auction barns. They are easily identifiable and with their added pay weight, they continue to deliver dollars to producers pockets. Without a doubt buying registered Charolais bulls is the way in increase your bottom line. It is never too early to start looking for your next herd-sire. If you are in the market for any registered Charolais females there are several top of the line sales in Manitoba this fall that are advertised in this issue. Wishing everyone has a safe and happy holiday! Stay warm! Michael Hunter 204-247-0301

Craig Scott
The CCA office staff have been busy implementing and administering the ongoing programs. The GPA program is still being conducted; this program allows all members to free 100K genomic tests on 10% of the females you enrolled in 2020. Please contact the office for more details and to get your DNA kits. Genomic testing is a great way to improve the accuracy of EPD’s. This program will run to the end of 2021. The Board of directors along with the breed improvement committee made the decision to take the performance page live starting July 1st, now when anyone does a search on an animal on our website all that animal’s performance data is available for viewing. This includes all data that has been collected and submitted to the CCA registry system. The Board and breed improvement felt that this information would be very helpful when searching out new genetics for your operation. If you do not want your performance data going public, you do have the option to click a privacy tab and your information will remain private. There is one other addition to the search page, any animal the has been genomic tested there will be a new GEPD logo on their search page. In June with some of the restrictions in Alberta relaxing the decision was made to have an in-person board meeting for those that felt comfortable or were able to attend. We are all tired of Zoom and accomplish much more face to face. Half of the board were able to meet in Calgary with the other half joining virtually. The board had very productive meetings. The nominations and election of directors was done very differently this year but was successful. The board of directors for 2021-2022 are President Kasey Phillips, Waskatenau, AB. 1st Vice President Shawn Airey, Rivers, MB. 2nd Vice President Ryan Nesbitt, Nestleton, ON. Past President Mike Elder, Coronach, SK. Darwin Rosso, Moose Jaw, SK. Jeff Cavers, La Riviere, MB. Mathieu Palerme, Gatineau, QC. Lorne Lakusta, Andrew, AB. Roger Maloney, Indian River, ON. Rod McLeod, Rocky View County, AB. The Board and staff would also like to thank Jim Olson for his time on the board. In conjunction with the board meeting there was also a virtual Town Hall meeting held and the board was very pleased with the response and the interaction from the membership. If you were not able to attend and have any questions, please feel free to call me any time. The Annual report that includes all the committee reports, provincial reports and financial report can be found on the CCA website. Craig Scott General Manager, Canadian Charolais Association

JUNIOR REPORT Fischer Cavers
BECOME A MJCA MEMBER TODAY! C2Charolaisjeff@gmail.com
Hi everybody, I’m Fischer Cavers. I am a member of the MJCA. I thought I would help out and write an article for the Bulletin this time around. This past July, I was lucky enough to travel with my Mom and brother to Alberta for two junior cattle shows. The first one was with the Canadian Junior Shorthorn Association held in Lacombe. My brother Lukas has a thing for Shorthorns so my Mom thought it was a good idea to go. I wasn’t too sure about it, but I’m pretty happy that I went. I met a lot of neat new cattle kids, learned how to do a few things differently and the coolest part was earning my first Aggregate buckle!! I was so excited and surprised! The second show was with the CCYA in Olds. Now, this is the one I was waiting for. I saw some old friends and made a few new ones. I really liked the mixer! Like every year it was sticky and messy. The best part was throwing cool whip pie in my big brother Keegan’s face… “Priceless”! The four days of CCYA went by quickly and ended with a really great show with lots of great cattle. It had been almost two years since I last showed cattle. Going to Alberta this summer reminds me how much I really like showing, the cattle and all the people that I get to see. It felt great to get back at it . The MJCA had a reorganization meeting on Oct 30 at AG-EX in Brandon. We voted to keep the executive board the same President- Madisyn Robertson Vice President- Fischer Cavers Treasurer- Claire Ramsey Secretary- Chase Airey They held a progressive 50/50 draw to help fundraiser for the 2023 CCYA conference that Manitoba will be hosting. The 50/50 fundraiser went very well. The winner was Robin Hill of Lenore, MB. Our group would like to thank everyone out there that bought a ticket and supported the MJCA. Keep an eye out for your opportunity to help out the Juniors with their fundraising this coming Bull Sale season. Donation items to be auctioned during sales or any other fundraising suggestions are greatly appreciated. We are working and planning hard so we can have the best conference ever in 2023. You can contact any MJCA board member or myself, Fischer @ C2Charolaisjeff@gmail.com with any questions or to become a member of the MJCA!

CCYA Conference
JULY 27-30, 2022, RENFREW, ONTARIO The Canadian Charolais Youth Association offers a number of programs and incentives throughout the year for juniors to start or grow their own Charolais herd. The genetics program allows Junior Charolais members to receive two free straws of semen from a bull that Genex, Semex or Select Sires offers. Check the CCYA website in February for the application form. The Buy & Show Program provides a monetary rebate to Juniors who purchase their own Charolais or Char-cross animal, with additional money available if the purchased animal is then showed. Up to $125 is available for rebate. The purchase incentive program allows Juniors who purchased a Charolais animal the opportunity to awarded 2 free straws of semen from the CCYA semen inventory list. A bill of sale must be presented and sent to the CCYA youth Coordinator. The CCYA also has two scholarships that are available. First, the Travel Opportunity scholarship provides youth members with a chance to receive funds in order to travel while attending an event involving the Charolais breed or the cattle industry in general. Second, the Leadership Scholarships are presented at the conference and show. Funds are raised through the Semen Auction. These awards recognize senior members on their contribution to the Charolais breed and their leadership among other Charolais youth members. If there are any questions or how to apply for all these great programs visit the CCYA website or contact one of the national board members. R4 Ranch Pierson MB, MB
COMMERCIAL BREEDER of the year
Greg & Brenda Riddell
Written by Alexis Stockford - Manitoba Co-operator
Greg Riddell of R4 Ranch near Pierson remembers that his father kept cattle on a small scale. So the decision to ramp up livestock operations was not totally novel after he and his wife, Brenda, took over the family farm in the late 1970s. In the decades since, the fourth-generation farmer has expanded that foothold in the beef industry, with hopes that a fifth generation is well in the works. Since taking over the farm, the family’s smallscale cattle numbers have expanded into a solidly sized cow-calf herd. Over the years, they have experimented with different breeds and different management practices. New technology has been added to help meet increased feed demand. New family members have been added. “The number of cattle has certainly increased, but the machinery that we use to put the feed out has changed too,” Greg Riddell said. “Originally it was square bales to now round bales and silage. It’s just more intense, I suspect would be the right word.” Why it matters: The Riddell family is the latest to be honoured by the provincial Charolais association. The bulk of that shift has taken place since 2000, he said, noting that the farm has, “kind of grown into it.” Today, the farm runs about 7,500 acres of cropped land and 550 commercial cow-calf pairs, crossing Charolais and (mostly) Red Angus genetics. Calves are fed through winter to be marketed in spring. Management has also changed over the years, a shift that Greg Riddell describes as more “in tune with nature.” Extended winter grazing, rotational grazing and fencing off of riparian areas on forage land — methods often touted by sustainability movements like regenerative agriculture — form key pieces of their system.
10
Manitoba Charolais Bulletin
On a more personal level, the Riddell family itself has grown. The couple’s three sons — Daniel, David and Garrett — along with their families, have all returned to farm full time following stints working for the oil industry, while three grandchildren (aged 10 years, six years and one year) promise yet another generation of Riddells will grow up on the family farm. “I guess they never really left the farm, but they always had off-farm jobs, and now they’re full time on the farm,” Greg Riddell said.
MCA nod The farm’s efforts won them laurels from the Manitoba Charolais Association earlier this year. The Riddell family of R4 Ranch was named the latest commercial breeder of the year by the provincial organization. “I guess we noticed they’ve had very good cattle,” association director Mervin Nykoliation said. In particular, he noted, cattle from R4 Ranch have previously topped the competitive
Virden auction barn for several years in a row. The association also noted that the farm well represents both white and red facets of the Charolais commercial herd. “They were kind of a hidden secret,” Nykoliation said. “The cattle buyers knew about them, but they just (kept on) doing their job and doing an excellent job. We just kind of thought maybe it’s time they got recognized for a job well done in promoting the Charolais breed in the commercial end of it.” Part of the award’s mandate is to highlight and provide regional recognition for some of the customers buying seedstock from local breeders. Greg Riddell says the current Charolais base for his herd came after many years of experimenting with breeds. Crossbred bulls formed the base of his first efforts to grow his herd. The first animal with Charolais ancestry passed through the ranch’s gates in the late ’70s. Soon, however, calving difficulties began to frustrate Riddell, and he turned instead to purebred bulls, in the hope of resolving the problem. The Riddells then turned to a local breeder, a resource that Greg Riddell now says played a critical guidance role. Since then, the R4 Ranch has developed a web of seedstock operations in western Manitoba and into Saskatchewan through which they buy their bulls. “We always seem to go back to the Charolais because of the reliability at the marketplace,” Greg Riddell said. Crystal ball The next big steps, according to Riddell, look to the next generation. After decades in the driver’s seat, Greg and Brenda Riddell are shifting gears, looking more towards succession planning and stepping back from management decisions in order for their children to eventually take over.

JMB Charolais - Brookdale, MB Bert McDonald & Judy Hart
2021
PUREBRED AMBASSADOR of the year
During the Annual General Meeting held July 21 in Brookdale, the Manitoba Charolais Association membership voted JMB Charolais, Bert McDonald & Judy Hart the 2021 MCA Charolais Ambassadors. The delicious supper for the evening was capably prepared and served by Judy Hart and Darlene McDonald.
No strangers to the Charolais breed, Bert & Judy have been members for over 36 years. They have been tireless members of the MCA Board, Judy having held the position of secretary/treasurer for many years and Bert serving several terms as director. Bert & Judy are great ambassadors - promoting the breed to its full potential. They have been long standing exhibitors at Manitoba Ag-Ex, where Bert was barn boss in 2021, and Canadian Western Agribition. They participate in other smaller events such as Harding Fair and Sandhills Showdown Jackpot Show. If there is a show, they are sure to be there with or without cattle. If they are at a fall show, the coffee pot will always be ready and a chair available for a visit. Regardless of the number of banners or colour of ribbons after a show, the stall is always a gathering spot to shoot the breeze and visit with friends. They have raised and exhibited many champions in the show ring over the years, most recently RJP Diesel 802F, JMB Fisher 604D and JMB Renaissance 444B. Bert & Judy are passionate about the youth. They have helped many a junior through 4-H, CCYA or young people get started in the business from their own nieces and nephews to neighbors. Bert was the co-founder in the Manitoba Youth Beef Round Up and served on the board for a number of years. Bert & Judy are always available to lend a hand, wisdom or an animal. They are quick to sponsor any 4-H or youth event -whether it be organizing or prizes. Judy is always ready with ideas and inventory to whip up coveted prizes for any event. For Ag-Ex 2021, Judy sponsored and embroidered eye-catching jackets for all of the Manitoba Junior Charolais Youth exhibiting in the junior show. No matter what the event, if there is a chance to promote the Charolais breed, Bert and Judy will do whatever they can to make it a success.

12th AnnualBEEF ROUND UP MANITOBA YOUTH ENTIRE LIST OF RESULTS AT WWW. MBYOUTHBEEFROUNDUP.WEEBLY.COM
Despite a challenging 2 years of let downs and cancellations, including our 2nd Round Up, participants at Manitoba Youth Beef Round Up have shown great resilience. It was with heavy hearts that the Round Up committee was forced to cancel our show for yet another year in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis. However, with a little outward thinking and help from Direct Livestock Marketing Systems (DLMS) the committee was able to host our annual event virtually to be broadcasted and judged online. It was a great success with 42 juniors entered and a total of 80 livestock entries. Despite a totally different approach to the August long weekend our juniors know and love, juniors were still able to participate in open livestock confirmation classes as well as skill building competitions such as public speaking, marketing, photography, graphic design and judging. Participants were given guidelines of how to present their animal via video. Animals were presented in show condition and videos were uploaded for broad cast on DLMS. Overall it was an incredibly strong presentation of animals and projects, juniors were applauded by the committee, peers and the general public for such adaptability and creativity despite a challenging circumstance. This is not just any cattle show, it is an all-around event to promote and educate youth to continue in the livestock industry. Our show would not happen without our dedicated sponsors, parents, Juniors and committee members who have stood behind this Junior All Breeds Show and helped to make it a success in past years. A huge thank you to everyone for their support and willingness to keep the Round Up spirit alive in our virtual show. Judges for our virtual event included judges of the confirmation show, Greg and Amanda Pugh of Pugh Farms Edgerton Alberta. Our Livestock Judging Competition judge Bevin Hamilton of Vermilion Alberta. Our Public Speaking Judges Carson Callum, General Manager of Manitoba Beef Producers and Shannon Carvey of Alexander MB. Manitoba Farm Women Conference Committee Plan Webinars for Rural Women On November 15th at 7 pm. Kim Moffatt is doing a presentation “Wellness on the Farm”. Kim Moffat is a trained psychiatric nurse and is a certified crisis counsellor who worked for Manitoba Far, Rural and Northern Support Services as the Manitoba Suicide Prevention Support Line for twenty years. For over ten years she facilitated a Suicide Bereavement support group for farm and rural people providing care and comfort to those impacted by the loss of a suicide. She has been a lead facilitator for the University of Guelph’s In The Know mental health training program for farmers and people working in the ag industry and has delivered more than forty trainings across Canada. Kim grew up on a farm and raised cattle for several years with her partner Brent while raising their three children. Following the fallout of BSE in 2003, they made the difficult decision to leave farming. She continues to use that experience to help understand and connect with farmers who are facing increasing
stress levels. She is a vocal advocate for making mental health services accessible to our farmers and their families. Kim has recently gone into private practice offering in person and online sessions prioritizing farm and rural populations. Her website is www.kmoffat.com If you haven’t received an e-mail on this webinar check out www.manitobafarmwomensconfernce.com. November 17th evening will be a second webinar featuring direct from the producer to the dinner table featuring two families that make it happen. Elsie and her daughter Emily operate “Porch Drop Produce” in Winnipeg. Recently have started a commercial kitchen. This mother daughter team pack a powerful punch when it comes to connecting with Manitoba Producers. They help market the goods and distribute fresh produce directly to the people of Winnipeg. Bringing yet another meaning to from the farm to the city table. Their website is www.porchdropproduce.com
Mark and Yanara Peters call their farm Spruce Drive Farms, located about 20 minutes north west of Portage la Prairie. They produce about 100 acres of seed potatoes and about 500 acres of grass and alfalfa hay. “I find potatoes to be a pretty intensive crop so a smaller amount is manageable for me, and doesn’t need a huge land base to draw from.We are located close to marsh land, Portage diversion, and Lake Manitoba. Being in close proximity to this causes our land to be prone to salinity. So, a good fit was to focus on hay production to help for soil recover from high water events.” said Mark Peters. The last few years Yanara have started a flower business called Stone Shed Gardens. It’s something she’s always loved doing and decided to make a business out of it. Stone Shed Gardens can be found on Facebook. Keep checking the Manitoba Farm Women’s Conference web page for more free webinars to come in January, February, and March.

BEEF COTTAGE PIE
JOAN’s KITCHEN
The following recipe originally came from an Australian friend but as my aunt often said when I got finished with it the list of ingredients had changed somewhat. She called it Beef Cottage Pie and I normally refer to it as Shepherd’s Pie.When making it for just the two of us I half the recipe. Beef broth can be used instead of Consommé soup, I prefer the flavour of the consommé. Recently when I made it I had no sour cream so used Greek yogurt. Heat oil in large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add onion, garlic, celery and carrots and cook for five minutes or until softened. Add beef and cook until browned. Add flour and cook for one minute. Stir in remaining ingredients. Cook, uncovered, stirring occasionally, for twenty to thirty minutes or until thickened. Spoon mixture into large, greased casserole dish. To make the potato topping, place potatoes in large saucepan, cover with water. Add a pinch of salt. Cook, partially covered for about fifteen minutes or until cooked; drain well. Mash potatoes with a potato masher. Add sour cream, butter and horseradish. Stir with fork until smooth. Spread over ground beef. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake 375F oven for about 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
