PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

BULLET I N The official publication for the Manitoba Charolais Association

Michael Hunter

Publisher

This has been a fall to remember! Historic calf prices have made this an extremely fun time to be in the cattle business. It is long overdue that we see this level of prices and I sure hope that it stays at this level for more than just a year. The cow calf sector of the industry needs this to maintain ourselves.

One thing that has remained consistent from last fall to this fall is that the Charolais cross calves continue to command top dollar across auction marts in Manitoba. Char calves continue to be some of the most identifiable and with this trait continue to pay a premium. If your cows are red, black, white tan or any colour I believe that a Charolais bull has a spot that can add dollars in your pocket. Brandon Ag Ex was an exciting place to be this year. It was the 50th Anniversary for Ag-Ex and for the 50th almost every breed National show was in town. The Charolais National show was very well attended with over 80 head exhibited from three different prairie provinces. The MCA also hosted the Player’s Club which was also well attended and received. Until next time, Michael Hunter 204-247-0301

CCYA Programs Buy & Show: provides a monetary rebate to juniors who purchase their own Charolais or Char-cross heifer or steer, with additional money available if the purchased animal is then used as a show heifer or steer. Up to $125 available Purchase Incentive Program: Applicants who meet the Program rules will be provided with a copy of the CCYA semen inventory list (held by Alta Genetics in Alberta) and can select any bull from that list. Upon notification of the selection, the National Board will have 2 straws of semen released in the youth member’s name, with the youth to then arrange delivery to their farm. Genetics Program: The Genetics Program is run by the National Board with semen chosen from leading bulls in the industry. The program encourages youth to take an active role in planning their breeding program and allows members to use genetics that would ordinarily be inaccessible. For additional information on these programs, please reach out to charolaisyouth@gmail.com or Madisyn Robertson, Manitoba Director at robertsonmadisyn@gmail.com. Ron & Gail McDonald - Sidney, MB R & G McDonald Livestock

PUREBRED AMBASSADOR of the year

At the Annual General Meeting of the Manitoba Charolais Association in Brandon on October 5th, 2023 the Association voted and selected R & G McDonald Livestock, Ron & Gail McDonald of Sidney, Manitoba as the 2023 Purebred Ambassador of the Year.

Ron’s late father (Allan McDonald) started in the Purebred business in 1982 when he purchased 25 Purebred heifers from Clare Geddes of Pilot Mound. Ron registered his first Purebred in 1985 and started his journey of owning, raising and selling the Charolais Breed. After graduation in 1990 he started farming alongside his dad where he had built his herd up to a half dozen Purebred cows and around 40 Commercial cows. In 1996 he took over the Purebred operation from his dad consisting of around 30 Purebred cattle.

CONGRATULATIONS RON & GAIL!

In 1999 Ron met Gail who was working for Manitoba Public Insurance in Brandon and she continued working there for just shy of 27 years and retired in 2019. For many years Gail worked alongside Ron helping with the cattle and now works behind the scenes doing bookwork and most of the computer work. They were married in 2007 on the farm and thus began R & G McDonald Livestock.

They run a 180 head cow/calf operation which consists of 120 Purebreds and 60 Commercial cows with around 50 calving in August to September which spreads out the workload. They also AI around 50 head each spring to get some new and different genetics into their herd. They grow corn, barley, oats and hay which is all used for feed. Ron has been a board member of the Manitoba Charolais Association for 12 years and has also volunteered at Ag Ex and the Carberry Fair helping to judge. R & G McDonald Livestock is one of the original consignors to the Prairie Distinction Bull Sale held in Neepawa every March and this upcoming year will be the 10th Annual sale. They sell around 10 – 15 bulls at this sale and the rest of the bulls are sold by Private Treaty off the farm. Most years they also sell a few Purebred females at the No Borders sale in Virden. This year they sold and showed for the first time at the 2023 National Charolais sale at AG Ex in Brandon. Over the years they have always strived to improve their herd and provide what their buyers/customers are looking for. One of the things they are most proud of is their honesty and customer service which has given them many repeat customers over the years. They’ve enjoyed meeting so many Purebred and Commercial Cattlemen and some have become lifelong friends.

Manitoba Charolais Association hosted The Players Club Bull Jackpot at the 50th Ag-Ex. The Players Club is a $50,000 bull calf futurity that started in 2019 by the Alberta Charolais Association and has followed the Charolais National Show the last few years. Breeders can enter one bull in the jackpot for $1500 or 2 or more for $2000 to compete for the $50,000 cash prize. On August 4, 5 and 6th 71 enthusiastic Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario Junior Cattle Producers attended the 16th Annual Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup in Neepawa, Manitoba. Excitement in the cattle industry brought out a quality group of interested cattle producers and 77 head of cattle. This year 31 new members attended Roundup for the first time. Where else can you attend an event with 71 Junior members of all breeds working together as teams and in individual competitions, to learn the skills needed in the Livestock Industry. This is not just any cattle show, it is an all-around event to promote and educate youth to continue in the livestock industry. 16 years ago, this All-Breed Committee along with new directors has developed over the years with over 286 Juniors participating in the weekend. This show would not happen without our dedicated sponsors, parents, Juniors, Judges,Volunteers and Committee members who have stood behind this Junior All Breeds Show and helped to make it a success. Platinum sponsors for 2023 are Enns Brothers and Neepawa Veterinary Clinic Ltd. The weekend started off Friday afternoon with all Juniors participating in the Ag Challenge, trying new skills and competitions with their new team members as a mixer. Then on to presentations on Herd Health with Dr. Grayson Ross, Nutrition with Trouw Nutrition, and Showmanship with Naomi Best. Education is an important part of day one at Round Up, helping the Juniors learn new skills. On Saturday, the Juniors were busy with many different events. In the morning Junior cattle producers had hands on workshops on Judging Cattle, Sheep and Goats; Oral Reasons and how to fill out the Judging cards. In the afternoon, the Juniors took part in Team Judging and Team Grooming. The Pee Wees participated in workshops on parts of the animal demonstrations and learning new skills. A huge number of the Juniors exhibited Art, Photography, Graphic Design, and Scrapbooks for the competitions. Saturday evening was wrapped up with the Cook-Off competition sponsored by our Platinum sponsor: Enns Bros Equipment. Here the Junior Teams prepare 2 steaks along with a vegetable and a dessert with their own theme with unique costumes. Exciting to see the Juniors creations and tasty end products. This was judged by Trevor Bennett, Enns Bros; Dr Liz Ostendorf, Neepawa Vet Clinic and Jan Ivey; Cam Kloeck, Mazer Group Neepawa: Matthew and Jewel Kulbacki of Kulbacki Ag Supplies; Murray Parrott, Town of Neepawa and Lesley Hedley, Founding director of Manitoba Youth Beef Round Up. Sunday was cattle show day. Thank-you to our show day judges; Owen Legaarden and Darren Ippolito. These two Beef Producers did an outstanding job on the Judging Clinic and the cattle show, giving the Juniors many pointers to help them in their future in the Beef Industry. Juniors participated in showmanship classes in the morning sponsored by Neepawa Vet Clinic and then confirmation classes in the afternoon. We rounded up the day with a Parade of Champions and a Parade of 4-H Champions. This year was the first time we had a Supreme Female at the Show and was awarded to Brooke Collins of Darlingford on her Simmental cow and heifer calf. Judges for the Supreme were Darren Ippolito, Owen Leegarden and Jessy Milne-Smith. We completed the weekend with the awards presentation.
