As I sit down to write this message (and watch the Jets game) it is -22 outside and supposed to be dropping to -31 tonight. I can’t help but think of those of you who are in the midst calving. As you are concentrating the majority of your time and energy on keeping calves alive don’t forget to take time to rest and recharge yourself as well. A special thanks to those MCA members that took time to represent at Mb Ag Days in Brandon. Your time and effort in promoting the Charolais breed is appreciated. Bull Sale season in Manitoba is quickly approaching. MCA members have worked hard in the past year to prepare and develop their sale offerings to best meet the needs of the commercial cattleman. As usual the Char cross calves have been topping the markets and now is the time to invest in your next calf crop. Add Charolais genetics to your herd for calving ease, hair, added pounds and above all buyer acceptance. Take this opportunity to look through our provincial magazine and see what the advertisers have to offer you this spring. Stay warm! Hans Myhre President 204-648-6416

CCA MESSAGE Mel Reekie

As I made the move to Calgary, Alberta in April 2012, I was an excited CCYA Alumni looking forward to working with the Canadian Charolais Association as part of my next adventure in life. Little did I know just what opportunities laid ahead for me. Over the past few years I’m happy to have been involved and witness to the momentum that the Charolais breed has enjoyed. This momentum is a true testament to the value and product that our breed has to offer both the seedstock sector and the commercial cattleman. Those Charolais calves are IDENTIFIABLE and they yield profit, plain and simple. There’s high demand for Charolais bulls and this can be seen through the Whole Herd Enrollment trends over the last number of years; we’ve been on the incline and in 2017 hit a ten year high of 24,000+ females. As leaders in the industry, a number of years ago the Charolais Association moved to a Whole Herd Enrollment format. Since my time at the CCA, we too have continued to push onward for the betterment of the breed. Among many things, we’ve transitioned to SNP technology for DNA, upgraded our Registry system to an online format with a user-friendly approach, updated our Calving Ease EPD to a better reflection of what’s happening in the field, and in keeping to industry standard, taken the long path of developing genomically enhanced EPDs for improved progression of our genetics. One of the greatest strengths in our breed is the people. Our breeders care, our breeders are passionate, and our breeders lead the industry. From day one, I was welcomed into the Charolais family in my new capacity. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed serving you, the members in the best manner that I could and to have helped in anyway to keep moving the breed forward. Representing the Canadian Charolais Association at industry events was always a pleasure as the question was never Why a Charolais, but always, Why not a Charolais? It was easy in that I could always be proud to be representing our group and our genetics both domestically and abroad. The comradery of Charolais breeders reaches international borders and my first taste of international Charolais events was at the 2014 World Charolais Congress in France. I was gobsmacked at a variety of things – the adaptation of the cattle, the innovation of the breeders and the different cultural practices, but the one thing that stands out everywhere you go is that Charolais ties us altogether as one. Cultures mesh, you break bread with your neighbour, and you share the passion for the Charolais breed. How cool was it that I could learn these things in the French countryside, the birthplace of Charolais? I was fortunate to have taken this further over the years and travelled through countless airports both in Canada and beyond, to represent you, the Charolais breeders at various industry activities. Charolais adapt to any climate and condition as seen throughout the weather extremes in Australia and Mexico, you can find Charolais cattle thriving along the fjords of Norway, and I’ve shared your breed successes on educating trade missions to Turkey and China. I encourage you as a Charolais breeder to participate in National and International Charolais events, you might not only find outcross genetics for your program, but also a lifelong friend with those you meet. Now, in pursuit of new opportunities, my next chapter is taking me back to Ontario. As reflection fills my heart, I know that it’s been a true delight to serve the Canadian Charolais Association, a time I will cherish for many years to come. See you down the road Mel Reekie General Manager, Canadian Charolais Association

With a concerted effort, the Canadian Charolais Association has developed and now published Genomically Enhanced EPDs. To collect the required data to build Genomically Enhanced EPDs, CCA has been and will continue to complete 50K SNP on all sires and embryo transfer calves when hair is submitted. We have been able to capitalize on government funding to offset significant costs thus far, but such programs have expired and as a result, the cost of 50K SNP samples will increase to $50 effective January 1, 2019. The Association is subsidizing the cost of 50K tests and at $50, this still reflects a savings to the member. Should you wish to complete 50K SNPs on your females, the Association is also offering this at the reduced price of $50. By combining pedigree, performance and DNA through 50K samples, this provides the most accurate EPDs available to you and your customers while moving the breed forward.

MJCA REPORT Madisyn Robertson

CCYA @charolaisyouth charolaisyouth@gmail.com

2018 CCYA was held this past July in Brandon. It was very well attended and enjoyed by all. The success of the conference would have not had been possible without the generous support from the Manitoba breeders. The Manitoba Junior Charolais Association held a re-organizational meeting and Christmas Party on December 15 in Brandon. I, Madisyn Robertson was elected the new President, Zach Baron Vice-President, Kiernan Olson as Treasurer and Chase Airey as Secretary. Jackie Cavers is our adult adviser. We have a very young group but we are all excited and enthusiastic. We will be holding a few fundraisers this year: letters have been sent to all purebred breeders in Manitoba advising them of our two fundraisers for 2019. Some breeders will be holding a separate auction during their bull sale with all proceeds going to the MJCA (ie. semen, pies, etc). In July we will have an online auction, so please watch the spring the MCA Facebook Page for more information. Our next meeting will be held at Boston Pizza in Neepawa, April 12 at 7:00 p.m. Please come early for supper and visiting. We welcome anyone who is interested to attend. If you would like any more information on our fundraising or want to join our association, please feel free to contact me at robertsonmadisyn@gmail.com or 204-476-8856. Wishing you a successful calving season!

Thank you to Hard Rock Land & Cattle for sponsoring pizza and pop at 0ur last meeting!

MJCA FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE In July 2018, the Manitoba Junior Charolais Association (MJCA) hosted the Canadian Charolais Youth Association Conference and Show in Brandon, MB. The event was very successful and brought together over 80 youth and their families from across the country and around the world. The MJCA is a young, enthusiastic group that is looking to the future and the opportunity to once again host the CCYA Conference & Show in Manitoba in 2022. The MJCA has put together a fundraising committee to work towards their financial goals which will allow them the opportunity to host this fantastic event. Watch for upcoming opportunities to support the MJCA at upcoming Charolais events! MJCA Fundraising Committee: Madisyn Robertson, Ethan Myhre, Noah Myhre, Chase Airey, Kiernan Olson, Erik Olson

PREMISE IDENTIFICATION Q: How will premises identification benefit my farm in an emergency or during an animal health disaster? A:The Manitoba Premises Identification (PID) program links livestock, poultry and producer contact information with their geographic locations. This information is used to rapidly alert producers about emergencies that pose a risk to the health and welfare of their animals. A premises is a parcel of land where livestock and poultry can be grown, kept, assembled or disposed of. This includes farms, veterinary clinics, auction marts, stables, abattoirs and fair grounds. In Manitoba, premises identification information has been used to respond to natural disasters such as flooding, wildfires, natural gas explosions and many animal disease issues, including Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDV), anthrax and avian influenza, for both small and commercial farms. PID is used to identify farms with any susceptible animals on a map. If a disease only affects certain animals, a map can be generated to show only the locations of those species. For example, cattle are susceptible to foot and mouth disease (FMD). Although not deadly, FMD is one of the most devastating livestock viruses, and is highly contagious. The sooner FMD is detected, the easier it is to control or stop a widespread outbreak. In this situation, a map would be created to show all farms with animals susceptible to the disease. Producers and veterinarians that have a PID would be notified if they were at risk. This information is critical for producers so they can take extra precautions, enhance biosecurity and minimize the risk of transmitting disease to their farms. If a flood is expected, the same type of information available through PID can identify all livestock and poultry locations, so producers can be notified and ensure their animals are moved or protected.

CYL now accepting applications for 2019 program

The Cattlemen’s Young Leaders (CYL) program is accepting applications online for 2018. The CYL program is an exciting opportunity for young producers between 18-35 to engage with the Canadian beef industry. Each year, 16 enthusiasts in the cattle industry are awarded a mentorship with an industry expert and a travel budget that allows them to get the most out of their time in the program. Selections take place at the Canadian Beef Industry Conference each year, with the opportunity to attend the conference in conjunction with selections. CYL also offers many exciting travel opportunities including the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, and the International Beef Alliance, which travels around the world each year. Please visit cattlemensyoungleaders.com for more information.

BULLETIN BOARD

A PID number is also required for all lab test submissions to Veterinary Diagnostic Services and some government programs, such as Ag Action Manitoba and the Crown lands leasing program. Q: How do I sign up to receive a premises identification number? A: It only takes a few minutes to complete an application online at manitoba.ca/pid or at your local Manitoba Agriculture office. After your application is processed, you will receive a letter containing your farm PID numbers in the mail, as well as email, if an email address is provided on the form. Many producers have chosen to identify all their parcels of land with livestock or poultry to be sure they are informed about all emergency situations that could affect them. Every second counts in an emergency. To respond quickly, up-to-date information is critical. Any changes in land ownership, emergency contact, or species information, must be reported to Manitoba Agriculture within 30 days to ensure information is kept current and accurate. If you have previously applied for a PID number, but have not updated your information in the last two years, you should resubmit an application form to ensure your information is current. To date, 73 per cent of cattle operations in Manitoba have a PID number. By completing a PID application and keeping your information up to date, you are taking an important step towards protecting your livestock and the livestock of other Manitoba and Canadian producers. You can visit manitoba.ca/pid, email traceability@gov.mb.ca or call 204-945-7684, to learn more about the Manitoba Premises Identification program or to update your existing PID information. You can also add your PID number to your Canadian Cattlemen Identification Agency (CCIA) Canadian Livestock Tracking System (CLTS) account by calling them at 1-877-909-2333.

COMMERCIAL CHAROLAIS BREEDER OF THE YEAR By: Hans Myhre

Darcy and Barb Kozack Farm Rossburn, MB

Their operation consists of 120 Charolais cross cows and a backgrounding lot for their own calves. Darcy and Barb began farming together at Darcy’s family farm in 1992 after taking over from Darcy’s parents. Prior to this, Barb had a vet practice in Rossburn and she jokes that Darcy was one of her best clients. Darcy comments that his parents also used Charolais bulls as far back as he can remember. Because of Barb’s vet background the Kozacks pay excellent attention to detail when it comes to herd health and nutrition. The Kozacks take great pride in their herd and it shows. As you visit with them you quickly see that they know each individual animal by name and their history. The cows calve in March and they background the calves until February of the next year when they typically sell at Heartland Livestock in Virden or Brandon often topping the sale. Their high quality Charolais cross steers and heifers have been fed and managed to be ready for the feedlot. They also keep their own home raised replacement females. This shows the versatility of the Charolais breed, that they are suited to both the feedlot and the breeding program. Darcy and Barb have supported several different Manitoba Charolais breeders over the years, most recently they have run a battery of exclusively Myhre Land & Cattle bulls. It has been a pleasure to get to know these fine folks and to see the pride they have in their animals. This is why we were pleased to nominate Darcy and Barb Kozack for the MCA Commercial Breeder of the Year award. Congratulations!

BULL EVALUATION

Hello again everyone, I hope everyone is keeping their ears warm this winter. Depending on which groundhog you believe spring is on the way and that means that bull sale season is right around the corner. Semen testing is, in my opinion, one of the most valuable tools that any producer can use to give them the best chance at having a successful year (and vaccination… always vaccinate!). I know everyone wants to get their bulls tested before the bull sales but this is not ideal. Mature bulls are not ready to be tested at this time of year, they need to get out on green grass and, smell the roses before you can accurately determine if they are going to be good for the breeding season. A lot of mature bulls tested this time of year have a high number of abnormal sperm, mostly detached heads and midpiece defects. This is commonly referred to as being “rusty”. Yearling bulls tend not to have this problem as much because they are essentially teen age boys and there hormones are ragging so they are more likely to pass their semen evaluation earlier on in the season. Semen evaluation is a snapshot in time that is used to determine a bull’s ability to breed. During a semen evaluation, the semen that is being collected that day was started being produced approximately 6 weeks prior. The abnormalities that we see during our semen evaluation can at times help to determine what was happening while the sperm were being made. Different defects can point to illness, trauma, cold stress, and nutritional problems. In these cases retest recommendations can be made to see if the bull is improving with appropriate changes to his environment.

12

Manitoba Charolais Bulletin

There are other defects that are genetic and are not going to completely disappear regardless of what we do and may wax and wane throughout a bull’s life or be grounds for culling. Other abnormalities such as degeneration, trauma or infection can be found during your routine evaluation. The purposed of semen testing is not to determine which bull is the best (that is why this is a pass/fail test and not a grading system). Choosing a bull which is a good fit for your operation should be based on a variety of different factors including but not limited to: genetics, conformation, calving ease, and the corresponding factors in your cow herd. Having cows that are physically and nutritionally fit to healthy calves on the ground is a whole other conversation. There are many other factors that go into getting a cow bred including female fertility, size of pasture and bull: cow ratio. Putting all of these factors together will be the right recipe for the most productive calf crop… as long as the weather co-operates. Scrotal circumference is a big area of debate among producers and the average scrotal circumference has greatly increased over the years. Scrotal circumference is related to age at maturation and the bulls capacity to breed multiple animals in a day. Bottom line is a bull will fail his entire evaluation regardless of how nice his swimmers are if his scrotal circumference is below the minimum for his age. A declining scrotal circumference is a different story; in an older bull it can point to some underlying issues with testicular degeneration that needs to be addressed. The biggest thing that I have found from experience is to have your bulls fit NOT

by: Marshall McDonald, DVM

FAT. Fat will deposit around the scrotum and affects the bull’s ability to regulate the temperature of his testicles (they are outside of the body for a reason!). Carrying around too much extra insulation will also affect their ability to get out and walk around the pasture decreasing the longevity of the bull and their willingness to go out and get the job done. For all those people that get their bulls tested once as a yearling and then never get them tested again you asking for trouble, a lot of things can change over a winter to impede a bulls ability to breed. The most common problem arising over winter would be frostbite. A small amount of frostbite to the scrotum isn’t a big deal but a lot of frostbite can cause significant issues with sperm production and may not resolve or may not resolve in time for your targeted breeding season. A possible scenario that reappears time and again is one of the bully in the school yard. For arguments sake lets say you have 3 bulls (2 yearlings and 1 mature bull) in a pasture of 80 cows. The mature bull will be the boss bull and likely breed the majority of the herd without letting the yearling bulls getting a chance to breed them. If your mature bull has degenerative testicles, and is only producing 10% normal sperm… you are going to have a bad year. Finding the issues with your mature bulls by semen testing your bulls before each breeding season will give you the highest likelihood of having a successful calving season. And for those of you out there that say “I have never tested my bulls and I’ve never had a problem” I would like to add one word to your sentence … YET.

JOAN’s KITCHEN A recipe shared from Joyce Stewart’s Kitchen, a long time member of the Charolais office team.

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350F (180C) In a medium bowl, mix together brown sugar, flour and lemon zest. Stir in nuts and butter. Mixture should be crumbly. Muffins In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, lemon, zest, cinnamon and salt. Make a well in the center and add milk, butter and egg mix until smooth. Carefully fold in berries. Place paper liners in muffin cups and fill each 2/3 full. Top each muffin with a tablespoon pf topping mixture. Bake on middle rack for 20-25 minutes, until a tooth pick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Place on a rack and cool 5 minutes. Remove muffins from tins and serve warm. Makes 12-15 medium muffins. I find these a nice light muffin and if they pass the Blake taste test they must be pretty good.
