As we move into our 60th year of operation, we take the time to reflect and thank the pioneer breeders for their forward thinking and courage to venture into the unknown of the Charolais breed. These breeders were ridiculed and bullied but didn’t waiver. These men and women truly laid the groundwork for the success we are rewarded with today. The Manitoba Charolais Association will be hosting the 60th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Charolais Association in Russell, June 18th to 20th. This event includes herd tours, the CCA AGM, the Charolais Foundation fundraising auction and the 60th Anniversary celebration. We hope to see all past and present members of the Canadian Charolais Association in Russell. In 2020 the CCA will be working hard on your behalf to keep this great breed moving forward. We are about to start our first intake of heifers for our Residual Feed Intake trial at Lakeland College in Vermillion. We will be doing more trials next fall; we will send out more details closer to that time. The Board of directors and staff of the Canadian Charolais Association are always available to answer any questions or help in any way we can so please reach out to the director in your area or give us a call in the office. I hope this note finds that calving is going well for everyone. The Junior’s met on November 11 in Brandon for an early Christmas Party. We attended a Wheat Kings game and then enjoyed a meal together. Elections were held and our executive remained the same, except Claire Ramsey will be our new Treasurer. A brief online meeting was held February 9 to do a few housekeeping items. CCYA will be held in Olds, AB in early July. This earlier date will conflict with many of our 4-H achievement days, so it was decided that we would request the Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up Committee to include a Charolais class at their summer show. We are working towards getting 10 entries to make this happen. A good discussion was held on new ways we can encourage more Junior’s, such as those from outside of the breed or 4-H members, to join us in 2022 for CCYA. A Promotion Committee was formed and they are busy preparing a recruitment letter to include with the Charolais tokens that are provided to 4-H members showing Charolais sired animals in 2020. The Fundraising Committee got to work in early January sending out letters to all active breeders in Manitoba. We will once again be holding our donation fundraiser during bull sales and/or requesting items for an online auction to be held early summer. We thank the following breeders for allowing a Junior Donation Item at their 2020 bull sale: C2 Charolais, High Bluff Stock Farm, HTA Charolais, Pleasant Dawn Farms, R&G Farms and Steppler Farms. The CCYA is very excited to provide a scholarship opportunity for members of the Canadian Charolais Youth Association. The scholarship opportunity provides youth members with a chance to receive funds in order to travel while attending an event involving the Charolais breed or the cattle industry in general. Applicants must fill out the application form and submit a write up which includes the following: - Your involvement in the cattle industry, specifically with the Charolais breed - Where you wish to travel and what event you will be attending - What you hope to gain from the trip - A detailed summary of your travel plans and itinerary - An estimate of your expenses for the trip

Jaylin Hill - Lenore, Manitoba
My name is Jaylin Hill, my parents are Robin and Connie Hill and we live on a cattle ranch just outside of Lenore, Manitoba. I am 17 years old and a grade 12 student at Virden Collegiate Institute in Virden. After graduation I will be attending the University of Regina to pursue a degree in Biochemistry. I have been a member of the Lenore 4-H Beef Club for the past 10 years and the Archie 4-H Light Horse & Pony Club for 2 years. Overtime, I have learnt that in order to be successful you need to put in the effort which will prove to be more beneficial to my future. With this being my last year in 4-H, looking back I have learnt many skills that will never be replaced but will help me grow as an individual. I do not view the last 10 years of being a 4-H member as a waste of time. 4-H has taught me that winning is not the key when entering the show ring. Hard work, responsibility, commitment and a positive attitude can make an underdog rise to the top. Besides showing cattle in 4-H I have shown cattle at Manitoba Youth Beef Round Up, Harding and Oak Lake Community Fair and CCYA in Brandon. When I’m not at work you will find me playing volleyball, hanging out with my friends or watching movies. I want to say Thank You to the Manitoba Charolais Association for choosing me as the recipient of the MCA Scholarship it will definitely help when I go off to University in the fall.

Scholarship Recipients Hello, fellow Charolais breeders! I am Madison Johnston of Rathwell, Manitoba. I am a grade twelve student at Treherne Collegiate Institute. I am heavily involved in the school’s sports programs such as cross-country running, volleyball, basketball, badminton, and track and field. Along with playing my own sports, I also take great pride in my role as a middle years volleyball coach at the Treherne Elementary School. Aside from my academics and sports, I am employed at our local restaurant as a cook and waitress. In my spare time, I enjoy working on the family farm. From a young age I have always enjoyed and taken great pride in the responsibilities that come from being raised on the farm. Being involved in the cattle industry and spending lots of quality time doing chores with my father has taught me many of the life skills I use today and will in the future. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Manitoba Charolais Association for this scholarship. These funds will go towards my post-secondary education at Lakeland College where I plan to obtain a diploma in Animal Science Technology.

Mid-West Cattlemen News Don’t Forget the Bull! By: Wesley Moore, Beef Technical Specialist, Cargill Animal Nutrition
For most producers, breeding season is a ways off, but right now is the perfect time to get the bull primed for breeding. The process of spermatogenesis takes 60 days so how we influence the bull now will impact his fertility two months down the road. Typically, any investment in nutrition and management of the bull is money well spent as he will influence our pregnancy rate for multiple females in any given year. Breeding Soundness For starters, I highly recommend a breeding soundness exam be performed no later than 4 weeks prior to the breeding season. Four weeks allows the producer time for a re-test or to find a new herd sire without delaying breeding season. Most breeding soundness exams performed by your veterinarian can tell you a lot about the bull’s ability to get cows bred. Make sure you get
the most out of your dollars spent during a breeding soundness exam. Quiz your vet on any information the test results may not obtain to get the full dialogue of the bulls breeding soundness. Results I would look to get from my vet include: testicle circumference, feet and leg soundness, penis abnormalities, sperm morphology and sperm motility. A breeding soundness exam should be performed prior to every breeding season, not just once when you purchase the bull. The bull’s fertility is far too important to your bottom -line to skimp on a breeding soundness exam! U.S. Body Condition Score Much like the cow, we can manage the bull’s condition based on the body condition score system (BCS). With U.S. BCS, the goal should be for the bull to start the
breeding season at that 5.5-6.0 BCS for optimal fertility. If the bull is doing his job, he will lose around 1 BCS during a 60 day breeding season (100 -200 lbs.). The absolute worst thing we can do is to get our bulls too fat! I see this happen more often than I would like, but a fat bull will have reduced fertility and a lower ability to physically cover the cows. When a bull is made too fat, he deposits fat in his scrotum which impairs the bull’s ability to thermoregulate his testicles which can ruin fertility. Just like humans, unnecessary condition on the bull can lead to joint problems, reduced libido and reduced fertility. If we manage the bull as an athlete by keeping him trim and fit, he is more likely to perform for our operation! Nutritional Influence on Fertility A bull’s fertility can be

influenced nutritionally but it is important to remember that nutrition is only one component of a successful bull fertility program. Good protein and energy nutrition is essential to keep the bull in good body condition with a healthy rumen. Feeding the bull to target a BCS of 5.5 to 6 means the bull will have the power needed to get out and service cows. Research suggests undernourished bulls exhibit reduced libido and decreased ejaculate volume. These same effects can also be seen with bulls on high energy diets or bulls that are overly fat. When supplements are used to prepare bulls for the breeding season, it is important to remember bulls are often maintaining 30-40% more body weight than a cow and maintenance requirements will be higher for the bull. Outside of protein and energy nutrition, it is important to evaluate vitamin and trace mineral status to exceed what the bull needs. Good trace mineral nutrition is essential to bull fertility and should be practiced year-round. Vitamin E and selenium supplementation are also good tools to improve bull fertility. In general, don’t forget vitamin and mineral nutrition in the bull. When developing bull feeding programs remember to target that ideal athlete that will go out and work for you! Bull to Cow Ratio One of the most critical

decisions we can make in bull management is how many cows will that bull be able to service. This question gets asked a lot, but it is one that is almost impossible to answer. I think in general a bull should cover between 15 and 35 breeding females during a 60 day breeding season. For me, this decision is influenced by age and previous service history, size of breeding pasture and reproductive synchrony in the cows. To provide a little detail, a mature bull with a history of covering 35 cows well in the past will be a good candidate to do it again. At the same time, a young bull in his first breeding season should have a lighter load of 10-15 females to determine if he is a satisfactory breeding. Also, it will take more bulls if the cows are synchronized and all come in heat at the same time and the larger the breeding pasture the lower the cow to bull ratio needs to be. Observe Breeding Performing a breeding soundness exam is important but at the end of the day, it still won’t tell you if the bull wants to breed cows. Take time during the breeding season to watch for breeding activity. If you observe cows in heat but no interest from the bull, the end result is still an open cow. Not only is observation important to evaluate a bulls willingness to breed, frequent observation will allow you to find bull injuries or repeat cycles in cows so you can respond quickly to breeding

problems. Selecting Replacement Bulls There are a lot of things to focus on when selecting replacement bulls and every producer has a different phenotype or genotype he is looking for. I would ask every producer to also evaluate how that bull was developed and put your seedstock supplier to the test. Most seedstock operators do a good job of growing bulls but a bull that is fed diets too high in energy during growth and puberty can experience impaired reproductive performance. Research has shown when dietary energy is too high in developing bulls, testicle development can be impaired having lasting effects on ejaculate volume and semen quality. In addition to semen quality, bulls fed very high energy diets could also see reduced longevity as a breeder due to feet and joint health. Quiz your bull supplier on his feeding program when developing bulls. If he is pushing bulls with high energy or starch dense diets, be cautious of the bulls that are over-conditioned on sale day. For every seedstock producer, the number one priority is to make a fertile bull that becomes a satisfactory breeder for your operation. If the number one goal is to make bulls look good at sale day, their priorities may not be in line with yours, which is to get cows bred first and foremost!

PLANNING IS UNDERWAY FOR 2020 Manitoba Farm Women Conference 2020 MFWC Planning Session was an opportunity for farm and rural women to come together to generate innovative ideas for the future and sustainability of the Manitoba Farm Women Conference. Leanne Tibbatts, Rural Leadership Specialist in the Industry Advancement Branch for Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development facilitated the planning session in Portage recently. Tamara Peitach commented “My first conference was 2019; honestly I didn’t have high expectations about another conference. My friend who went before was enthusiastic about going together, so I registered. I have to say ‘once you’ve gone to one, you won’t miss another’. Being in a room filled with women, with the same ideals and passion is so invigorating. I’m excited to see what MBWFC 2020 will bring us. My partner took over his grandfather’s farm and we’ve recently doubled both our cattle and grain acres. I’m in my mid 20’s and the extra demand on work can sure take a toll even though I have the energy to do it. July 31 - August 2, 2020 - Neepawa, MB MANITOBA YOUTH BEEF ROUNDUP AND CANADIAN JUNIOR SHORTHORN NATIONAL EVENT PRESS RELEASE July 31, August 1 & 2, 2020 will be the Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup 13th annual event in Neepawa, Manitoba, along with hosting the Canadian Junior Shorthorn National Event. This exciting three-day event will bring together Junior members, 4-Hers, and enthusiasts from all across the country. The show is organized by representatives from various breeds that have been involved with National and Provincial shows in the past. Our goal is to prepare young entrepreneurs in the livestock industry, thru this exciting showcase of youth, cattle and friendly competition. This event will educate, encourage, stimulate and unite participants in the business of agriculture and the beef industry. It encompasses a variety of competitions and events to match all interests and skill levels of participants. Some of the events are Team Grooming, Individual and Team Judging, Showmanship, Marketing, Sales Talk, Impromptu Speeches, Art, Photography, Scrapbooking, as well as cattle classes. This will be a celebration and showcase of Canadian Youth and Agriculture in our province. We encourage young and old to stay involved in the agriculture industry, explore career opportunities, increase national trade and awareness, and be proud to be part of one of Canada’s largest industries. We feel the celebration of our past shows exemplifies the importance of youth and agriculture, and will strive to present innovative opportunities that promote and educate future cattleman dedicated to the cattle industry. NEW IN 2020 for the 13th Anniversary- National Junior Shorthorn weekend, Embryo Transplant workshop, Cattle Presentations, workshops, and invitations for 4-H Champion Females from each 2020 Club Achievement to attend Roundup with entry fee paid by Roundup. Along with Ag Challenge competitions, Cook-off, cattle shows, scholarships and Selection of Canadian Western Agribition Judging Team. Our 2019 Agribition Judging team did extremely well winning the Dairy cattle and Horse judging be part of this opportunity by attending Roundup. Roundup is being undertaken as an all breeds show to bring young purebred and commercial cattle producers from across the country to see friendly competition amongst the new and upcoming producers from within Canada. APPLE FRITTER CAKE
Kelly from the Oak River Inn posted this recipe on Facebook a lover of Apple Fritters I had to try the cake recipe. The recipe turned out beautifully. Kelly and her husband Richard English farm in the area and purchased the Inn and made it family friendly so kids can enjoy a meal with their parents. Richard loves to cook and my favourite time to visit the Inn is Friday or Saturday nights when he is barbecuing local Rib-eye steaks. Being he still farms he takes time away from cooking in seeding and harvest. I recommend phoning ahead to make sure he will be available and have enough steaks on hand so you can enjoy a delicious steak in an old fashioned pub. Please read all the instructions before you make the cake I nearly screwed up the recipe by not reading the whole recipe before starting.
DIRECTIONS
For filling: make your filling by combining apples, sugar, water, cinnamon and cornstarch in a small pan. Cook low heat for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring constantly until the sauce is thickened and the apples are a bit soft. Set aside to cool. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together until well combined and set aside. For cake: Preheat oven to 350F. Grease and flour a 9 by 13 baking dish. Set aside. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add applesauce and vanilla and mix till combined. Add the eggs, one at a time beating well after each addition. Sift the dry ingredients together. Add the dry ingredients to the batter in three parts alternating with the yogurt in two parts beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Beat until just combined. Spoon half of the batter into the prepared pan. Spoon the cooled apple mixture over the batter carefully and spread as evenly as possible. Sprinkle 2/3 of brown sugar cinnamon mixture over apples and cover with the rest of batter. Sprinkle the rest of the brown sugar cinnamon mixture over the top. Bake for 45-55 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. For Glaze: While the cake is baking, make the glaze. In bowl mix the powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until the glaze is desired consistency. When the cake comes out of oven, immediately but carefully pour on to hot cake. Try to pour as evenly as possible. You might have to pick up the cake and tilt it to spread the glaze evenly. Let the cake sit for a while for the glaze to set.

For filling 1 heaping cup of sliced apples (peel, core and quarter then slice) 1/3 cup sugar ¼ teaspoon cinnamon Small pinch freshly grated nutmeg (I used ground) 2 Tablespoons 2 teaspoons water Plus ½ cup brown sugar ½ teaspoon cinnamon For Cake: 1/3 cup butter ¾ cup sugar ½ cup apple sauce 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 eggs 2 ¼ cups flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup Greek yogurt (you can use plain yogurt I did or sour cream)
