CCA MESSAGE Craig Scott
cscott@charolais.com
The Canadian Charolais Association Board of Directors along with the Breed improvement committee are very pleased to introduce the Genomic Producer Advancement Program (GPA). The GPA program is open to all members of the CCA and is designed to 100K SNP test females. Genomic testing will offer benefits to both seedstock and commercial producers. •
Early predictor of genetic predictability.
•
Increased value of breeding stock.
•
More accurate EPD’s.
•
More genomic records keep the Charolais breed informed and ahead in the industry.
The number of free 100K SNP tests that each breeder will receive will be based on their 2020 Whole herd Enrolment numbers. The GPA program is available for our members to test up to 10% of females in your herd (100 female enrolled in 2020 you can request 10 tests at no cost). The Canadian Charolais Association board of Directors are committed to moving forward and providing every tool possible to breeders. Please take advantage of this and any other programs that will be offered on the future. For more information and to request your test kits please contact the CCA office (403)250-9242. As we move into bull sale season, we would like to wish every good luck. Take Care, Craig Scott

MJCA REPORT Madisyn Robertson
CCYA @charolaisyouth charolaisyouth@gmail.com
Hello everyone! I hope calving is going well. For the most part the weather has been decent. We held a quick zoom meeting on January 20th. It was great to have almost all of our members attend the meeting. The members decided to forgo a general election for 2021, however, we had a vacancy at the vice president position. Fisher Cavers was elected to fill this roll. We will once again be asking breeders for their support with our bull sale auction fundraiser. If you already haven’t received a letter you will be getting one shortly. The Manitoba breeders have been extremely supportive of our association and we are very grateful. Pending COVID regulations, it is hoped that we can hold an outdoor Junior Show in Carberry in early June. This would be in conjunction with the MCA annual meeting. Our promotion committee will be sending invitation letters to all Manitoba 4-H clubs, in hopes that we can entice juniors with a Char cross steer or heifer to attend. The goal would be to keep them interested enough to attend the CCYA conference in a few years. Our next meeting will be held April 7 on zoom and we welcome all new members. If you would like to be included in this meeting please feel free to contact me for more information! I can be reached at 204-841-2496 or robertsonmadisyn@gmail.com. Happy calving everyone!

Kendra Cline - Belmont, Manitoba
My name is Kendra Cline and I live on a mixed farm just outside of Belmont, MB. I am 17 years old and currently a grade twelve student at Baldur School. I have been involved in my school’s sport programs which include basketball, volleyball, and curling. Aside from extracurricular activities and summer jobs I am involved with our family farm. This year I purchased my first purebred heifer with the intent of developing my own herd. Farm life has taught me the value of responsibility and hard work. After graduating I will be attending Assiniboine Community College to receive a diploma in Business Administration where I will be specializing in financial services. I hope to then use my knowledge of the agriculture industry and my secondary education for my future endeavours. I would like to thank the Manitoba Charolais Association for this scholarship as it will help with my educational goals.
MANITOBA CHAROLAIS
Scholarship Recipients My name is Megan Perih and I am 19 years old. I am attending my second year of the veterinary technology program at Saskatchewan polytechnic college in Saskatoon, SK. Along with my parents, we have a cattle farm just north of Dauphin Manitoba where we have a herd of Charolais cattle. I have been in 4-H showing Charolais cattle for a couple of years and I am currently a national board member of the Canadian Charolais Youth Association and have been on the board for the last 2 years. I have shown cattle with CCYA for 2 years and loved everything about the experience. In the past year I have purchased my own pure bred Charolais heifers and look forward to expanding my herd. When I’m not attending college or helping on the farm, I work part time at a veterinarian clinic. Being a part of this industry has taught me so much about how hard work pays off and that trying your best will allow you to feel pride in what you have accomplished. Working with cattle has taught me many life lessons and skills that will help me in the future. I would like to say thank you to the Manitoba Charolais Association for choosing me as the recipient of the MCA Scholarship, it will definitely help me further my education!

One of our main goals in the Charolais business has always been to raise bulls with a POLLED HEAD and a HORNED HIP. Renaissance our senior herd sire does just that. This polled bull has French in his pedigree and has left us with a tremendous set of females and bulls. His calves are all born easy, super aggressive, and are up and ready to suck in minutes. We strive to raise and develop athletic bulls while maintaining calving ease and good disposition, performance and longevity. All the bulls are developed slowly on grass and wintered on corn silage, free choice hay and oats. They are raised with the commercial man in mind we only sell bulls we feel are good enough to be used in our own commercial herd. The bulls we raise will provide you with great replacement females.

COMMERCIAL BREEDERS OF THE YEAR Riddell Farms - Pierson, MB
Greg and Garett Riddell and families own and operate Riddell Farms, south of Pierson, Manitoba. Their operation consists of a 500 head cow calf as well as a back grounding feed lot operation and a 9000 acre grain farm. The Riddell family has used Charolais bulls for over 30 years. The majority of their cow herd are Charolais Cross. According to Garrett, they have always promoted the value of a Charolais cow when most operations don’t keep commercial Charolais females. “What good is bull if you have to throw away the daughters,” Garrett says. The Riddell’s are firm believers in the Charolais Female. Annually all females are bred to Charolais Bulls, in exception to the heifers, they are bred Red Angus. Calving starts in early April and calves are weaned in November and back grounded until spring where they are traditionally sold through Heartland Livestock Services, Virden. These calves are known to top the market. In the past their calves have got national recognition after being featured on the Livestock Market Association of Canada (LMAC) Facebook page after topping the market in Virden. Quality in Quantity! Unlike many other commercial breeders, the Riddell Family doesn’t just support one operation when buying bulls, they support the Manitoba Charolais industry as a whole. Greg & Garrett have supported many sales in the last few years, including the Prairie Distinction, C2 Charolais, Pleasant Dawn Charolais and Tri N Charolais. The Riddell Family are great cattlemen and they know Charolais are the type of bulls that work for them and their calf buyers. They are always keen to talk about Charolais Cattle!

IMPORTANCE OF TRACEABILITY Simply put, Traceability is the ability to follow an item or a group of items – be it animal, plant, food products or ingredient – from one point in the supply chain to another, either backwards or forwards.
REWARD PROGRAMS
As a producer that purchases and applies approved Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) tags, you are the important first step in the Canadian livestock traceability system. Premises Identification numbers (PID) and the ability to track movement of livestock are the other important components of a successful traceability system. Current contact information (account name, contact name, address, phone number, fax or email) makes a significant difference when communication is required.
This offer is for new Webstore accounts only. Call CCIA at 1.877.909.2333 to set up your account. Once your account is activated, you can use the self-serve webstore or continue placing your order by phone.
Current Health of Animals Part XV regulations focus on Animal Identification; where all cattle must be tagged with an approved tag/indicator prior to moving from their current location or leaving their farm of origin. Proposed amendments to the regulations will be shifting to a more comprehensive movement tracking system that will be dependent on Premises Identification. How do I get a PID number? Each Canadian Province and Territory has specific guidelines for creating a premises identification number. Canadaid.ca has a section regarding premises registration in your province https:// www.canadaid.ca/traceability/premises-identification/ What is the CLTS and how do I update my account? Everyone who has ever purchased tags already has a Canadian Livestock Tracking System (CLTS) database account and it is housed at clts.canadaid.ca. Your retail tag dealer uploads your newly purchased tags into your CLTS account within 24 hours of their purchase. CCIA manages the CLTS database and provides tools and information for data capture. CCIA is not government, we are non-profit, industry-driven and here to help you navigate reporting and recording requirements. New users to the CLTS database can call the CCIA call centre at (1877-909-2333) and a Client Support Representative (CSR) will be happy to get you started with a username for you. Once your username has been set up, the Client Support Representatives will generate an authorization code which will be emailed to you or given verbally over the phone so that you can to create your own personalized password. It’s that easy. Now you can start using your account to enter your PID and manage your tag and livestock inventory. From there, you can practice submitting events such as retirements and animal movements. Download the CLTS MOBO APP to have the CLTS database available on your mobile device, for fast and convenient data uploads. Buy tags online with the CCIA Webstore The CCIA Webstore offers all approved tags and matching applicators with a full selection at the most competitive price. Order online or by phone and you will receive your tags in the mail 5-7 business days later! The Webstore is run independently. You will need a CCIA/CLTS account and a Webstore account. While your information is mirrored, a CCIA Webstore account must be activated before you can purchase tags directly from CCIA.
New Webstore Accounts:
• At the time of activation, you will be entitled to 5 free tags and an applicator. • If you provide a valid email address OR your PID, you will receive 10% off your first tag order. • If you update your account with both your email AND your PID, you will receive 15% off your first tag order. Existing accounts: You will receive CCIA swag of your choice for updating any portion of your CCIA/CLTS Account information (account name, contact name, address, phone number, fax or email). You may pick one of these gifts: • Cotton gloves (2 pairs per account M, L, XL) • Tool kit • Wine bottle stopper • Leather gloves (large and XL only) Add your PID number, and you can pick and extra gift. Or choose a rebate card for 10% off your next tag order instead of swags. What resources do we have? CCIA has an online CLTS Resource Centre (CRC) that is new and improved. The new CRC is your “how to” destination for everything CLTS. At support.canadaid.ca you’ll find comprehensive guides for how to submit events, frequently asked questions and more. Each guide features simple instructions and screenshots to guide you through each process step-by-step to easily navigate your way through the CLTS. You can find guides on everything from pairing a tag reader to Bluetooth, to submitting a Birth Date event. Guides are organized in easy to navigate headings to help you find what you are looking for quickly. Knowledge of the CLTS and how to submit events are critical in light of proposed traceability regulations and for contributing to a world-class traceability system. To learn more about what we do visit www.canadaid.ca; to learn more about the CLTS visit support.canadaid.ca and login to your account at clts.canadaid.ca. Of course, our team of Client Support Representatives are available to walk you through any of the user guides or help you find the right guide for you. QUESTION &ANSWER
HOW DO YOU PREPARE YOUR REPLACEMENT HEIFERS FOR BREEDING SEASON?
Our heifers get vaccinated in the fall with a BVD and a blackleg vaccine and again at least 30 days prior to breeding. We make sure we feed plenty of mineral, and have them in adequate body condition to ensure they are ready to breed. 2 weeks prior to breeding we administer estrimate followed with a second dose 11 days later. The heifers are then split into groups of 6-10 head and placed with a bull, in 3 days they should all cycle. We achieve near 85% conception rates with this method. Getting the heifers to calve early gives them the maximum opportunity to rebreed for the following year. - The Ramsey Family, Rammer Charolais In the late fall/early winter after making the selection of what we plan to keep for replacement heifers they are sorted out of the larger group to get a little extra treatment and attention. We find it works best for us to have them in good condition and on a good mineral program well before breeding season. Our heifers are fed a TMR ration of tub ground hay, barley silage, rolled grain and mineral. In addition in their pen there is free choice hay, salt and a lick tub and adequate bedding. Getting closer to breeding season we’ll start watching and recording heats to make sure they are all in good reproductive health. We will make a decision to sync the heifers with Estrumate or watch for natural heats and AI from those. We have found that developing our heifer pen this way sets the females up well to maintain their condition and fertility, which ensures they stay in our herd. - The Jackson Family, High Bluff Stock Farms Once spring has finally sprung and the dugouts are thawed we turn the replacement heifers on their 6 acre pasture. We like to have them out on the fields as early as we can so they can get out and run around and get some exercise. They get their needles and brands before we turn them out. We feed them good grass/ alfalfa hay and millet or oat silage bales. We also give them a 1:1 breeding mineral and crushed barley every 3-4 days as a protein boost. - The Jared Preston, Double P Stock Farms

Manitoba Charolais Bulletin
HOW DO YOU PREPARE YOUR MATURE FEMALES FOR BREEDING SEASON?
Our mature cows only go through the processing chute once a year, usually around late October. At this time, they will receive a 4 way BVD vaccine, Scourboss 9 and Ivomec. Aside from that we just try and make sure they are in nice condition and on a good mineral package. - The Ramsey Family, Rammer Charolais
WHAT ARE YOUR GO TO CALVING SEASON TIPS/TRICKS?
We do our very best to keep the barn clean and dry to limit naval infections. We generally select bulls with more calving ease (this does not mean low birth weight, this means calving ease) because Matthew is calving a large number of cows primarily on his own. It is labor intensive to be helping cows calve, not to mention the affects dystocia has on calf health and on the cows return to estrus. - The Ramsey Family, Rammer Charolais Canola straw! We like it for everything but especially for the calf sheds. We layer it with barley straw to keep them warm and dry. Throw in a square bale of hay to give them something to chew on (and stay out of and away from the cows bale feeders!). We like to have the calf sheds set up as soon as we start calving. Gets the calves used to going into them, which has worked out well for us in preparation for any storms and extra cold nights. - The Jackson Family, High Bluff Stock Farms
WHAT ARE YOU LOVING THIS WINTER?
We love soups in winter with some fresh bread. see our favourite Hamburger soup recipe on pg 27. This is a tough one, we are absolutely loving this winter.. family time, ice fishing, the girls are learning to rope, horse riding, calving in beautiful weather (except this week lol, toboggan rides, skating on the outdoor rink. - The Ramsey Family, Rammer Charolais
