BULLET I N The official publication for the Manitoba Charolais Association

Michael Hunter

Publisher

Hello everyone! It’s been a roller coaster of weather this winter, seeing 30 degree changes in under 24 hrs and more than our fair share of blizzards. It has made for a challenging few months. Hopefully with March approaching we are in for the inevitable warm up we are all looking forward to!

Publications Agreement #0041265055

The official publication for the Manitoba Charolais Association

There is some optimism heading into spring on the cattle market. We have seen the heavy calves in the new year bringing nice money but we sure do have a long way to go to catch up to the inflation that has occurred on all of our inputs into this industry. One thing remains the same, this year char cross calves continually lead the way and topped the markets across Manitoba. I think with some timely moisture this spring we could be in for some good times this coming fall. This issue highlights many operations current bull offerings of the spring. There are excellent Charolais bulls available across this province whether you are looking to purchase privately or out of a sale so make sure to reach out and get that next herd sire you’ve been looking for! -Michael Hunter

The Robertson Family

Kelly, Yvonne, Paul, Dalyse and Madisyn

2022

COMMERCIAL BREEDER of the year

Operating under KYR Farms Ltd and Hard Rock Land & Cattle, the Robertson family work and farm together. They calve 160 cows and run approx. 3000 acres of grain land. Their cowherd base is Simmental x Red Angus which are bred Charolais. They calve in January – March and sell most of their calves through Heartland Livestock Services in Virden in the fall. For commercial producers, calving in January‐March isn’t always popular. They calve that early to get the calves they want to market in fall at a profitable weight on the calves. They also prefer to have calving wrapped up before hitting the fields in the spring. The Robertson’s take great pride in their herd and producing a top-end product/calf crop. They see the value in the Charolais cross and producing the calves that the feedlots desire. Soggy, hairy calves with lots of muscle and frame to grow. Their char-crossed calves consistently top the market the day they go through the ring and are often sorted in large, uniform groups. Utilizing Charolais bulls has allowed them to increase weaning weights on their calves which generates more profit for their operation. Not only does the Robertson family use Charolais bulls and see the value for their own operation, they also openly share this and promote it with their peers in person and on social media! There are many tweets Paul has written regarding the benefits they have found using Charolais bulls in their herd. This well-respected family are known advocates for Charolais. Paul, Dalyse and Madisyn attend and participate in many Charolais events including: Manitoba Charolais Association AGM, Manitoba Junior Charolais events, CCYA, Manitoba Ag Ex and Canadian Western Agribition. Dalyse was an integral part of the Manitoba Junior Charolais Association (MJCA) CCYA planning committee when Manitoba hosted in 2018 and Paul volunteered many hours to help ensure the show was successful. Madisyn is also the President of the MJCA, to which her parents are fully supportive and volunteer their time to the youth association as well. Madisyn is as keen as they get and can be found participating in Junior shows such as CCYA, Manitoba Ag Ex, Canadian Western Agribition, Harding Fair, Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup and her local 4-H show and interclub show. She is often found befriending and helping the younger kids. Madisyn has won Grand Champion Steer and Female with her Charolais and char crossed calves several times in the short time she has been a 4-H member. Paul & Dalyse have volunteered countless hours to their local 4-H club and the MJCA.

Tips and Tricks from the Manitoba Cattle Ranchers Facebook group chat and Manitoba Charolais Association Breeders. REITERATE SOME BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES YOU ALREADY KNOW OR MAYBE LEARN SOMETHING NEW!

NEW BORN CALVES

-Make sure that pairs mother up and get that first suck into the babies within hours of calving. -Castrate your bull calves that you want to be steers at birth. -Always have powdered colostrum on hand and don’t be scared to tube them if you haven’t seem them sucking. -Sometimes heifers don’t produce high quality colostrum right off the start. Giving all calves off of heifers a bag of colostrum is a good way to ensure they are getting all the nutrients they need and has cut down on calf sickness for us a lot.

STRESSED NEW BORN CALVES

-If a calf is born and is unresponsive try putting snow in their ear -With a harder pull or a weaker calf, put calf into the calf recovery position (see picture) -A gob of corn syrup or honey will give a really chilled calf some energy until it’s warmed enough to absorb a colostrum tubing or bottle. -We give colostrum to every calf that’s had a tough delivery, is stressed or a twin within hours of birth. As well if a calf for any reason is slow just keep giving it colostrum until it’s up and going. Seems to help ensure a healthy calf. -If you have a “dummy” calf with no suck try the Madigan Squeeze!! Works wonders!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gh7wqE8RlnA

VACCINATIONS

-Vaccinate your cows for scours and make sure the calf gets colostrum. If you have a coccidiosis problem in your yard ask your vet about giving Baycox at birth. It works. You can also give intranasal vaccine to newborns for pneumonia and respiratory diseases. Check with your vet about that. It seems like you are spending money but you are actually making money. A calf that has never had to recover from illness will do better it’s whole life. And everyone knows that a calf that dies is a huge loss. -If you routinely have coccidiosis issues, start feeding a coccidiosiostat or monesin to the cows pre-calving. -We haven’t had any sick calves at weaning since adding Inforce 3 at birth to our vaccination program. -Toltrazuril pill for coccidiosis, it’s in our soil and we haven’t had a case in 3 years since we started using it.

ASSISTING DELIVERY

-Don’t get too anxious with the pullers. -Don’t rush heifers. -Keeping things slow and quiet around the soon to be or new mom will pay off loads in terms of recovery and mothering up. And save you time in the long run. -When pulling a calf and the cow is quiet enough allow her to lay down. She has so much more room that way and usually pushes way harder than standing. If using the chute make sure that the head gate isn’t choking her. -If helping a cow only pull when she is pushing. -We give oxytocin and meloxiam to any cow that you have assisted or had a tougher delivery. Works wonders on making her feel better, wanting to mother up sooner which makes things easier for you in the long run.

COW HEALTH AFTER CALVING

-Meloxiam- it’s like hot sauce- I put that **** on everything! Works for pouting, soreness, stress, etc. If you can eliminate pain from the equation 9/10 times it creates a winning scenario!! -If a cow is kicking at a swollen udder after she has calved when the calf is trying to suck, meloxiam will help take the swelling away and make momma and baby much happier. Meloxicam can be given orally or mixed with grain or silage and they eat it right up! -Give a cow a drink of warm water after pulling or harder calving will help her clean. (Water fountain temp, not straight cold well water) -Atravet in some grain when fostering calves can work wonders. -Oxytocin when adopting new calves works too. Or on any cow that hasn’t dropped milk yet. -Give 1 cup of apple cider vinegar in the cows grain after calving to help her clean out easier and faster. If I had one that held on to her after birth for some reason I kept giving her 1 cup till she cleans. My Uncles who had dairy cattle gave me that piece of advice and it truly worked for me.

CALVING SUPPLIES

-Always have powdered colostrum on hand -Get a sun-tag calf sled. Locks the leg of the calf into the sled. Momma cow sees her calf because of open back of sleigh and follows. At least 95% follow. One person can pull sled by hand or with a 4 wheeler.

ALL TIPS AND TRICKS ARE PRACTICES OF INDIVIDUALS. Please talk to your local vet for any pharmaceutical recommendations and practices that might be a fit your herd.

CALVING TIPS & TRICKS

-A hotbox/calf warmer is a must have. Use it once and it’s paid for itself. -Check supplies before calving- OB gloves, calving chains, hooks, colostrum, milk replacer, bottle and tubs, and your items too… stock cane, flashlight, working cameras. Anything you might use for warm-up, heat box, ear muffs, heat lamp, multiple rags/blankets etc. -We love our orange hook doctor. Small hook works to hook a newborn calves legs and drag it into the shed or into a calf sleigh. Or works for catching a calf by the leg to hook on a panel and treat. Big hook works for guiding calves as you move them. Or use it to mouth cattle to safely assist in tagging, administering boluses, etc. -Calving cameras can pay for themselves pretty fast in a saved calf or in your time.

YOUNG CALVES

-Save some of your best grass hay, let the calves have access to it. It’ll help reduce scours. -Put a tub of diatomaceous earth in a calf shed where no cow can reach. It really helps reduce scours. -If you have a calf that isn’t thriving- try feeding it, make sure it’s warm enough and giving it a shot of painkiller. Taking hunger, chills and pain out of the equation often is enough to get the calf up and going. Hopefully preventing a future sick calf. -Electrolytes if calves are scouring and often until the stool stiffens up. -Lots of bedding and a shelter where calves can stay out of the elements really helps in keeping calves healthy. -The monensin in treated feed helps reduce coccidiosis.

-Get feed tests done and work with a nutritionalist to make sure your cows are in the right shape and getting the right amount of nutrition to be able support the pregnancy, delivery of the baby and so that momma and baby can thrive the first couple weeks after calving. With the ultimate goal of weaning in a big calf and having a cow that re-breeds for next season. -If you can set your yard up to let cows into feed at night (4-5 pm open the gate) majority of the calves will be born during the day time and it keeps you fresh longer!

GENERAL

-Lots of bedding for cows and calves. -Canola straw is great when conditions get a bit soggier. -Take the after birth away so it doesn’t encourage coyotes to come into the herd. -Keeping the calving barn cleaned out and dry with fresh straw has helped us cut down on navel ill.

COW HEALTH

-Cows that have to walk a bit for water and keep fit with some muscle tone will have infinitely fewer calving difficulties than cows who don’t have to walk or stretch their les for feed or water. -A fit cow has smaller babies, with more vigour. As the weeks progress in January calving pens, the cows get sluggish. When the cows have had exercise it’s quicker turnaround for mom and baby.

TAG RETENTION IN 2022 Tag retention is an integral part of the traceability system and has long been a focus of the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA). Over the years, CCIA has collaborated on a number of research projects to better understand common issues and find solutions to concerns about lost tags, missing backs and poor overall tag retention. From 2011 to 2015, CCIA embarked on the National Tag Retention Project which involved the formation of a subcommittee to complete a tag retention study in a variety of environments in Canada as a way of better determining the long-term retention rates and operability of the current set of approved CCIA radio frequency identification (RFID) beef cattle tags used in Canada. Industry’s growing concerns regarding the effectiveness and long-term viability of the types of approved tags available, and the fixture mechanisms commonly used to manufacture tags for Canada, and poor tag retention within the value chain affects the accuracy and availability of livestock traceability data, which affects response time in an emergency (e.g., animal disease outbreak, flood, tornado, contaminated feed supplement recall). In 2019, CCIA ran the Automated Trace Sighting Data Collection (Remote Pasture Reader) which studied the use of portable RFID reader stations, to collect sighted movement event data at remote co-mingling sites. These portable, solar charged devices could store and communicate data using cellular modems to deliver data to a CCIA landing server. While this research was not directly related to tag retention, it did offer promising data points for the potential of automated traceability practices in the future.

22

Manitoba Charolais Bulletin

Recently, CCIA began working directly with manufacturers to improve issues reported from producers. This has resulted in enhancements and modifications to current tags on the market. Conformance testing of approved tags is conducted on a regular basis by CCIA. Annual testing is planned for early 2022. This testing ensures tags continue to meet the high standards of industry and CCIA. Tag retention will be the feature of CCIA’s targeted advertising in the Spring of 2022. Tag retention is improving through direct action, which will help with the growing demand for traceability in our industry. Ultimately, much of the responsibility still falls on the producers, who are relied upon to correctly apply tags and respect the environmental limits of the materials. By working together with both manufacturers and producers, CCIA is helping resolve the fundamental traceability issue of tag retention by addressing concerns through direct feedback from producers through the Approved Indicator Quality Control Form found on canadaid.ca under CLTS Forms (https:// www.canadaid.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/ApprovedIndicator-Quality-Control-Form_fillable-2021-11-19.pdf).

Manitoba Farmer Wellness Program, a new initiative aimed at providing mental health support for farmers and their families, was announced today in Manitoba. The agriculture industry is inherently stressful and overwhelming at times; the Manitoba Farmer Wellness Program has been designed to provide one on one counselling sessions by professional counselors with a background in agriculture to farmers and their families. “Farmers have a demanding lifestyle, and stigma remains a barrier for some to reach out for help,” says Gerry Friesen MFWP Board member “The Manitoba Farmer Wellness Program has been created to address the identified gap in availability of one on one counselling services for farmers, whatever stage of the journey they are at. There is no farm without the farmer.” Farmers and their immediate family members can access six free, confidential (one hour) counselling sessions with a registered and skilled counsellor with a background in agriculture, funded by the Manitoba Farmer Wellness Program. The services are available during the day, evenings or on weekends to accommodate farmers’ unique schedules, and can be in person, by telephone or video chat depending on the farmer’s preference. Appointments will be available beginning in March. The program is in the final stages of development and is looking for support on behalf of farmers in our province. “Any group or individual who works with farmers and is interested in financially supporting the Manitoba Farmer Wellness Program should contact us,” explains Roberta Galbraith MFWF Vice-Chair. “We are working collaboratively with the agriculture community in our province to bring this program to fruition for the health and wellness of the industry.” If you are interested in booking an appointment with a counsellor, donating, applying to work with us as a counsellor, or learning more about the program, visit manitobafarmerwellness.ca.

BULLETIN BOARD Obituary J. Allan McDonald, 71, of Sidney, Manitoba passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family after a battle with cancer on November 19, 2021. He is survived by his 4 children, Ron (Gail), Brian, Heather (Shea), Janna (Corey) and 4 grandchildren Shae Lynn, Casen, Lachlan and Kipton. He was predeceased by his partner Brenda who he was laid to rest beside. Some of his favourite things to do were hunting, fishing, quading, snowmobiling, boating and spending time around the fire at his lakefront cabin at Sandy Lake, MB. Farming was his life having grown up on the family farm with his parents Roy and Margaret, and three younger brothers Howard, Don and Colin and farming came very naturally to him. In 1970 he began farming on his own growing grain and starting to build up a cattle herd at which time he started using Purebred Charolais bulls in the late 70’s. In 1981 he ventured into growing potatoes which his son Brian continues to do to this day. 1982 marked the start of Allan buying his first Purebred Charolais females being the first in the area to do so. His son Ron took over the Purebred herd in 1996 and continues to raise Purebred Charolais cattle to this day under the name R & G McDonald Livestock. Next year will mark 40 years of raising Purebred Charolais cattle between Allan and Ron. Allan continued raising commercial cattle up until 2 years ago marking 50 years of farming in Sidney. Even in retirement Allan was regularly lending a hand on either of his son’s farms.

Steppler Farms - Miami, Manitoba A multi generational farm that celebrated their centennial year in 2021. The farm started as a grain and cream quote operation, then in 1973 when Dan and Pat took over the operation they sold the dairy and added Charolais to the program. Their 4 sons are all very involved in the farm. Ian and Sandy manage the Bee operation, Geoff & Sarah are directors, Adam & Amber manage the grain operation and Andre & Katie manage the cattle operation. The farm consists of 4000 acres of grain land, 600 purebred Charolais, 100 commercial cows, and 2500 bee hive operation. The grain farm uses minimal till practices to effectively manage the soil. At risk land is sowed down for rotational grazing to increase wild flowers and forages to feed the cattle as well as help the honey production and bee health. The Stepplers are community people, being leaders of the Miami 4H Club, directors on many local boards and sports teams. Andre is currently a foundation board member for the Canadian Charolais Association and is past board member for the MCA and CCA.

Congratulations to the

BMO FARM FAMILIES OF THE YEAR WINN MANN FARM - Winnipegosis, Manitoba Founded in 1973 by Mike and Aubrey Beyak, now celebrating its third generation. At Winn Mann Farms there are no hired hands it is strictly a family ran operation. Overseen by Kevin, Sherry and their sons Tyson and Bryce and Jeff, Ashley and their children Kassi, Rigg and Kruz. The farm consists of 1300 commercial cows, a 1500 head backgrounding feedlot, and 1500 acres of grain land and thousands of acres of grass and pasture land. Crop rotation is very vigorous. Cover crops are being used to contribute to soil health and minimize the use of fertilizer. The farm heavily implements alfalfa and different grasses in the rotation to conserve moisture and reduce erosion. The Beyaks are very involved in the community, hosting a charity golf tournament every year with funds going to different organizations in the community. They are involved in many boards for local organizations.

DON’T OVER COOK YOUR

ROAST BEEF DIRECTIONS

Recommended; let roast sit uncovered at room temperature for one to two hours before cooking. Preheat oven to 450F. In a small bowl, combine oil, garlic, rosemary, thyme, salt and pepper. Rub all over roast. Place roast in roasting pan fitted with a roasting rack. Roast for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 325F and roast one hour and forty-five minutes more for medium or two hours for well done.

Submitted by Joan Airey

INGREDIENTS 1 -4 lb. round roast ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil (I use canola oil) 3 garlic cloves minced 1 Tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary 1 Tablespoon chopped fresh thyme leaves 2 teaspoons kosher salt 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper

Remove from oven and let rest 15 to 30 minutes before serving. Cover with an aluminum foil till ready to carve. Information on cooking roasts can be found on Canadian Beef website. Planning a head for meals having meat thawed and at the right temperature makes quite a difference in how meat turns out. I have used dry herbs when fresh ones aren’t available.
