At the MCA pen show and AGM this past July, I was elected president of the MCA. Thank you to all that attended, brought cattle and helped to make the pen show a success this year. I believe the AGM in this format brought out the most members that I have seen at a meeting since I’ve been involved with the MCA. I look forward to working with the group of directors we have on the board. We are a young and enthusiastic group. Looking forward into the fall I would like to encourage everyone, whether you’re a purebred or commercial producer, to get involved in our upcoming events. Your participation will help to keep the excitement going around the Charolais breed in Manitoba. The end of October brings our National Show and Sale to Brandon. I hope to see everyone out to support and share in the fun that the planning committee has got in store for us. Later this fall there are dispersal sales for Pleasant Dawn Charolais and Tee M Jay Farms. There is also the No Borders female sale and the Stepplers will once again be hosting a female sale. Don’t miss out on your chance to add excellent genetics to your herd. If there is anything you feel that the MCA could or should be doing, please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the directors. May your harvest and other fall work progress well and we’ll see you in Brandon! Hans Myhre

Mel Reekie

It’s our pleasure to be headed back to Friendly Manitoba for the 2017 Edition of the Canadian Charolais National Show and Sale. Building upon the enthusiasm of the last National held in Manitoba, this year is sure to be another standout. Hosting the National Show and Sale is an event to celebrate not only provincial prosperity but also national accomplishments of our breed. Our female enrollments have been on the rise the last few years as breeders make decisions to increase their Charolais genetics; given the continued demand for Charolais bulls, it’s no secret they add to your bottom line. As I’ve travelled through the provinces this year, it has been a widespread enthusiastic atmosphere. Charolais isn’t just a buzz word, it’s the product producers are seeking. As breeders, you can pat yourself on the back for sustaining and improving upon the breed while continuing to provide a commodity that’s in high demand. Success breeds success. So, why not celebrate? Plan to join us October 26 and 27 during Manitoba Ag-Ex to support your breed and network with fellow breeders whether in the show ring, the sale crowd or back at the show box. See you in Brandon! Mel Reekie General Manager, Canadian Charolais Association

CCYA Report Keegan Blehm CCYA 2017 was held in Barrie, Ontario with 59 juniors being in attendance from New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Throughout the week everyone had fun, lots of laughs and a good time overall with lots of new friends being made. I would like to thank the Ontario Junior Charolais Association for being so hospitable and hosting a fantastic and memorable conference. Now it’s Manitoba’s turn to host CCYA in 2018. We have decided to have it in Brandon. With great facilities and lots of planning going into on, it’s sure to be a great adventure filled with memories. Some events that will be happening in the next couple of months; the MYCA will be having a donation heifer draw at Manitoba Ag Ex to raise money for next summer’s CCYA. Tickets will be $10 and be purchased from any MYCA member or Andre Steppler. Thank you Steppler Farms for donating the heifer. Next the CCYA national board will be holding their semen auction at Agribiton in November. The semen auction proceeds go towards programs of the National Board. Particularly, the leadership scholarships which are presented at the conference.

Keegan Blehm

CCYA Mission The objective of the CCYA are to develop and strengthen youth involvement in the breeding, raising, and promotion of Charolais cattle, as well as to unite youth from across Canada. The existence of the National Board, which includes representatives from the various provinces/regions, ensures that all regions are given an equal opportunity to be involved with the CCYA, and fosters communication between the various regions. The board is responsible for providing insight and recommendations to the Conference and Show executive, maintaining a positive relationship with the Canadian Charolais Association, and overseeing the various CCYA programs that take place.

Purebred Charolais Breeder of the year C2 Charolais - Jeff & Jackie Cavers & Family

By: Joan Airey C2 Charolais a third generation operation located near LaRiviere in the Pembina Valley received Purebred Charolais Breeder of the Year Award at the annual Manitoba Charolais Annual General Meeting and Pen Show in Dauphin recently. C2 is owned and operated by Jeff and Jackie Cavers along with the help of their three sons: Keegan, Fischer and Lukas. They have thirteen hundred acres of grain and one hundred and twenty purebred Charolais cows with a strong yearling bull program. “Jeff ’s Dad always had cattle and used Maine Anjou bulls. From the day Jeff could walk he was always out helping with the cattle. His love for cattle grew when he was in 4-H and his career in 4-H was successful. In 2001 when he was in his early twenties he leased his first group of Charolais cattle from his Aunt and Uncle Lloyd and Lorraine Cavers who own Cavers Charolais in Neepawa .”said Jackie Cavers. “The Charolais breed is the easiest way to add value to a commercial herd as buyers want Charolais calves to feed! We were running two hundred and twenty commercial cows when he started into the purebred business. When we had the commercial herd we had various breeds bred to different breeds. Once we used more and more Charolais bulls those calves always brought more money. Especially the heifer calves. We were getting more money for the char heifer calves than the steers of other breeds.” said Jeff Cavers. “Jeff worked out west in Camrose for a year but wasn’t happy when not working with cattle. Cattle are part of who we are as challenging as this farm lifestyle can be in today’s world. The cattle end of our operation is what keeps us going. We promote our cattle at small community fairs all over southern and central Manitoba, Ag-Ex in Brandon, Agribition in Regina, Douglas Test Station, No Borders Purebred Sale, and Hi-Way Sale in previous years. We have exported cattle to Russia three years in a row through Xport International. We market our bulls through a purebred sale Prairie Distinction Charolais Bull in Neepawa every March.” said Jackie Cavers. Jeff has been active on the board of Douglas Test Station, Vice-President of the Manitoba Charolais Association, and involved wth Manitou Ag Society. Jackie is a 4-H leader on the committee for Manitoba Beef Round-Up. While son Keegan is a Junior 4-H leader and on CCYA National Board as representative for Manitoba MCYA. Keegan is attending his second year at Brandon University working on his science degree with an interest in agricultural economics. He has started his own Charolais herd, continually adding to it. The Cavers family strongly support many youth programs and event such as local 4-H shows, Young Ranchman’s in Swift Current, SK. and have attended the Canadian Charolais Youth Association Annual Event the past four years and Alberta Synergy. Jackie is a graduate of Olds College Animal Health Technology program. She worked in dentistry and general medicine for fifteen years in a small animal hospital. She is a advocate for youth programs. The Cavers let young people in the community adopt a calf so they can experience and participate in the 4-H beef program and also encourage these young people to attend events such as Round-Up in Neepawa. “There is so much untapped potential in our young people and so many opportunities and life lessons in the cattle environment that can build solid character, confidence, and good work ethic. I believe these values are not always presented in a young person’s life now a day. Cattle can help give them this.” said Jackie. Jeff, Jackie and family work together on the farm and make C2 a successful operation.

Commercial Charolais Breeder of the year

Sora-Horan Farms - Martin, Deona & Amy Horan

By: Joan Airey Martin, Deona, and Amy Horan, owners of Soura-Horan Farms from Bowsman, MB. were recently named Commercial Charolais Breeders of the Year at annual Manitoba Charolais Pen Show and AGM in Dauphin. “In 1973 my father-in-law Leland Soura bought his first registered Charolais bull. Deona and I began purchasing cows in 1998 and farmed with Leland and Russell until 2008 when we took over the farming operation. We continued to purchase Charolais bulls and run a commercial Charolais herd. Deona’s brother Russell farmed until 2008 and had a herd of eighty cows with a Charolais Influence when we took over the operation. We continued to purchase Charolais bulls and run a Charolais commercial herd of cows. We will be calving out approximately four hundred and thirty cows this winter of which three hundred are Charolais and the rest are percentage Charolais cross cows. We normally wean our calves in October and background them until January or February. Our calves are sold through WD Livestock in Roblin and are sent to a feed in Ontario. We have marketed them this way for two years and the same feeder is calling for our calves’ again.” said Martin Horan. Martin’s wife is office manager for Doaks Bulk Fuels in Swan River three days a week and the rest of the time she can be found working on the farm either running equipment or working with cattle. “Our daughter Amy farms with us full-time and has forty-five Charolais cows of her own. She owns some pasture and rents some grain land. Since 1998 we have had a meat goat operation around 2004 we were up to five hundred does kidding but have since scaled back to a herd of approximately seventy-five does. Our kids are marketed into Alberta for meat with some going to various producers as breeding stock.” said Horan. The Horan family also crop approximately eighteen hundred acres of canola, wheat, barley, oats and soybeans. “We are presently running twenty Purebred Charolais bulls. Charolais bulls mean performance for us that means more pounds at weaning which means dollars in our pocket.” said Horan

1oth Annual MANITOBA YOUTH BEEF ROUND UP Manitoba Charolais Youth included: Chase Airey, Fisher & Lucas Cavers, Brett & Angel Grieves On August 4th to 6th, 2017 sixty-nine enthusiastic Manitoba and Saskatchewan junior cattle producers attended the 10th Annual Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup in Neepawa, Manitoba. Excitement in the cattle industry brought out a top-notch group of interested cattle producers and 78 head of cattle plus calves. Where else can you attend an event with 69 Junior members all working together as teams and in individual competitions, to learn the skills needed in the Livestock Industry. This is not just any cattle show, it is an all-around event to promote and educate youth to continue in the livestock industry. Our show would not happen without our dedicated sponsors and committee members who have stood behind this Junior All Breeds Show and helped to make it a success. The weekend started off Friday morning with a presentation from Liz Carey on cattle handling. In the afternoon, the Juniors had a chance to try what they learned with a hands-on cattle sorting demonstration and clinic. Friday evening all Juniors participated in the Ag Challenge – a fun, hands on challenge where teams work together to complete 10 stations related to the cattle industry. This competition is sponsored by Mazer Group and is a great way for Juniors to work together, make new friendships, learn something new and have fun while doing it! On Saturday, the Juniors were busy with many different events. In the morning they participated in public speaking, individual judging and attended a presentation by Carman and Donna Jackson on Advocacy. In the afternoon, the Juniors took part in team judging, team fitting, the stockman’s knowledge competition and the pee wees had a demonstration put on by Blair McRae. On Saturday, Ambassador and Scholarship Interviews also took place. Saturday evening was wrapped up with the Cook-Off competition sponsored by Enns Brothers and a slip n’ slide to cool off for the day! Sunday was show day. Thank-you to our show day judges, Levi Jackson and Jared Glasman. Juniors participated in showmanship classes in the morning and then confirmation classes in the afternoon. We rounded the day off with a parade of champions and a parade of 13 4-H champions then finished the evening off with awards and 10th anniversary cake. Thank you to the judges, presenters and helpers for the weekend were: Chuck Terin of Enns Brothers, Biannca Bernasconi, Pam de Rocquigny, Jay Rimke, Dillon Hunter, Peter Penner of Manitoba Beef Producers, Monty Thomson, Joanne Best, Laura Horner, Jake Rawluk, Brodie Hunter, Carman and Donna Jackson, Brett McRae, Bert McDonald and Raina Syrnyk.

Canola Connect Harvest Camp

Held at High Bluff Stock Farms

On September 9, 2017 HBSF had the privilege to host our 6th #CanolaConnect Harvest Camp. Each year farm families stop (yes, stop) harvest to share their farm stories, to answer questions, to give pasture tours and combine rides, to build relationships and trust and to share a meal with influential consumers such as nutritionists, media personalities, food bloggers, chefs, dietitians, home economists, and other interested stakeholders. #CanolaConnect is hosted by the Manitoba & Canadian Canola growers who do a tremendous job of making meaningful and lasting connections between farmers and consumers. The key message that HBSF hopes that all the campers take away from their stop at the pasture is that Canada beef is the most trusted beef source in the world and our standards are incredibly high. That they should feel proud to serve their friends and families Canadian beef. Additional conversations this year were around hormones, antibiotics, beef genetics, production, feed lots and animal husbandry. New this year was a section on sustainable land use as we took campers to a pasture where the ground has never been broken and native grasslands flourish. We dug soil cores and looked at the different horizons and the amount of top soil (3 inches of top soil and then rock) to discuss why the soil in this type of land is not and never has been suitable for growing crops, and that a good way to protect and sustainably utilize this grassland is to graze it for beef production. Hosting canola camp has been one of our most rewarding experiences. We have learnt that consumers want and are open to learning and talking about farming practices and that if we take the time to tell our food story to them that they can be our biggest advocates. We look forward to hosting many more canola camps and encourage everyone to reach out and get to know consumers because they want to know you and your food story!

Committed to Agriculture Advocacy at High Bluff Stock Farms

In June, high school students from Roblin went to High Bluff Stock Farm to learn about agriculture. For a hands on experience with real life application, the students were given tips on how to buy bulls – students were given sale catalogues, access to the Charolais registry, bull sale order and weights/ measurements. Students also had descriptions of the herds that the bulls would be purchased for and walked through the 5 bulls that HBSF had left to deliver. It was a great day, great students and amazing teachers!
