With nighttime lows in the single digits as I write this it feels like an early fall is here. After a very dry summer throughout most of the province many cattle producers are working hard to gather up enough winter feed. We wish all the best to everyone in this endeavour.

CCA Message

Mel Reekie

The third annual Canadian Beef Industry Conference (CBIC) presented by five partner organizations – Beef Cattle Research Council, Canada Beef, Canadian Beef Breeds Council, Canadian Cattlemen’s Association and National Cattle Feeders Association - was held in London, Ontario this past August where every facet of our beef industry was in attendance concentrating on the theme, Driving Demand. If you haven’t attended one of these conferences, you should consider attending next year’s CBIC in Calgary, Alberta. These conferences open and expand your mind and possibilities. CBIC not only houses the opportunity to listen to many speakers on topics such as domestic and foreign trade updates and the latest updates in technology but also the opportunity to network with fellow beef industry stakeholders. Rex Murphy, CBIC’s keynote speaker offered his sarcastic intellect to the crowd, but all jokes aside, his message was loud and clear. Rex had a strong message to share; take pride in what you have accomplished. Together we have accomplished a sophisticated and well-established beef industry recognized around the world, there’s a lot to be proud of. When all groups of the beef industry have the occasion to come together with the common goal of educating and networking, join us and we can continue to take this industry to new heights and build a prosperous future. CCA is pleased to announce that the first official EPD Evaluation that includes genomics has been completed. The addition of genomics improves the accuracy of EPDs and allows for much improved genetic evaluations in young animals. Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI), our service provider has applied the single step procedure that was developed by the University of Georgia and has incorporated DNA into our EPDs. Pedigree, performance and DNA data will now all be included in the development of our EPDs. Research has proven that the Single Step Method of applying genomics to EPDs is a valuable tool for speed and improvement of genetic evaluation and will provide Charolais breeders and their customers with the most accurate genetic evaluation possible. Are you or do you know someone involved in agriculture and are registered in a post-secondary education program? Do you or your family use Charolais bulls? The Canadian Charolais Association offers scholarships to those involved with the breed whether it be a purebred breeder, commercial cattlemen or feedlot operator. Submit your completed application to the CCA office by October 31 to be considered for one of three available scholarships totalling $3500; application forms are available at www.charolais.com/association/ scholarships. Accept this as your invitation to join us this November 8 & 9 in Edmonton, Alberta for the National Charolais Show being held at FarmFair International. Breeders from across Canada will meet in Edmonton for all the action the event has to offer. Kicking off the festivities on November 8 is the 2018 Elite Charolais Breeder’s Bull Calf Futurity Player’s Club featuring a $50,000 prize purse. The National show on Friday, November 9 starts with a bang, the Pair of Heifer Calves class leads off the show with a $10,000 prize purse. If you haven’t already, make plans to attend! ATTN MEMBERS: Weaning Data Deadline – October 31, 2017 Submit your calves and performance data ASAP to ensure you’re included in the fall EPD Evaluation. As breeders, please contribute your performance data. Performance data is imperative for the maintenance of accurate breed evaluations to ensure positive breed improvements. As well, do you collect chute-side ultrasound data? CCA can utilize chute-side ultrasound records and incorporate the data into our genetic evaluations. Contact Mel at the CCA office for details. Purebred Charolais Breeder of the year Cline Cattle Co. - Brad & Juanita Cline

By: Joan Airey Cline Cattle Company, owned and operated by Brad and Juanita Cline was name Purebred Charolais Breeder of the Year at the annual Manitoba Charolais Annual General Meeting, Pen Show and Picnic on July 14th. Cline Cattle Company is located near Belmont Manitoba which is about 10 minutes east of Pelican Lake. “We have had commercial cows for about twenty-six years, which have been bred to Charolais bulls. We felt they always gave us the heaviest weaning calves come fall. We started adding Purebreds to our heard about 8 years ago; it just seemed to be the right next step for our operation. Our operation includes 150 Charolais purebreds (including red factor) and 50 commercial cows along with 1200 acres of grain land.” said Brad Cline. Brad has been on the board for the Manitoba Charolais Association for the last three years. They sell their bulls by private treaty from the yard with an open house held in November of each year “Our son Logan is attending agri-business in Brandon and Kendra our daughter is going into grade 10 in the fall. They are both very involved in all aspects of the farm operation. We don’t venture from home often but when we do it’s usually to go to a pen show, Agribition, Ag-Ex or a bull sale!” said Juanita Cline. Over the years the Cline’s have tried to donate as much volunteer time as possible to their community. They have been on the board for their local rink, helped run town’s fall super, involved with fundraising and construction of a new playground. Brad served on council for one term; both of them did a term on town board. Brad, Juanita and family hosted the Annual Pen Show for 2018 and annual the Manitoba Charolais Association AGM, and provided the picnic supper.

CCA WEANING DATA Submit your weaning data ASAP to ensure you’re included in the fall EPD evaluation. As breeders, please contribute your performance data. Performance data is imperative for the maintenance of accurate breed evaluations to ensure positive breed improvements.

Australia meets canada By: Alizah Fogden

Canada has been a dream since I was just a little girl hearing stories of my parents time in Canada when they worked on different properties in Alberta as part of a trainee program. After I finished school towards the end of last year I worked and worked knowing my end target was to have saved enough money to tour Canada. As I waved my friends off to university my family let me go on an adventure of a lifetime. On the 21st of June I waved to my family at the gates of the Adelaide airport with minimal plans knowing I wouldn’t be returning until the 17th of January 2019. My time in Canada has been amazing so far and I look forward to the time I have left with the fall shows going to be here before we know it. I came with one plan and that was to pay my own way to participate at the recent CCYA held in Brandon. It was a great learning experience for me and a great way that I knew I would be able to meet fellow Charolais breeders like minded as myself. After the conference myself along with the other international participants were given the opportunity to tour Steppler Farms, C2 Charolais, Hunter Charolais and High Bluff Stock Farms. Little did I know this would lead to me doing a further 5 youth shows across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. At the conclusion of CCYA I went back to C2 Charolais and prepared for the Manitoba Youth Beef Round Up. This event made me feel home with our junior show the South Australian Junior Heifer Expo known to most as the best junior show in Australia an event in which my mum is the coordinator of. Here I really enjoyed the team events of the cook off and team fitting. I loved how everyone got involved to help one another. It has been an incredible learning experience to attend junior shows across Canada. In Australia team judging and fitting along

8

Manitoba Charolais Bulletin

with the cook off are unheard of events. I cannot wait to take these new ideas back home. Planning is well underway for the international program to come to Australia next year along with the world congress. It is shaping up to be a must attend event for our international guests. Back home in Loxton, South Australia my family run a 15000 hectares, beef cattle and cropping operation. We farm with my father’s parents who own a 200 head herd of Santa Gertrudis cows under stud name Nangaringa. While back in 2006 myself and my younger brother Thomas and sister Eleni decided to purchase 6 of the top Charolais cows from my mum’s parents herd when they dispersed. We now have grown to run a herd of 50 purebred cows under the stud name Boulview. Each year we crop 8000 hectares of wheat, barley and oats. As a break crop we plant a mix of sorghum and vetch. Australia is in a serious drought with hay and grain becoming very expensive to purchase. There is very little hay left in the eastern states resulting in farms trucking it from 3000 km away. Some parts of Queensland have been in a drought for over six years. Never can imagine trucking water into troughs because water holes are bone dry or being the farmer that has livestock to weak to walk. The government is doing nothing and its up to us as producers to stand up and start fund raising ourselves. I would like to say a huge thank you to any one who has welcomed me to come and tour so far its hard to believe I am a little over half way. It’s flying by a little faster then I would have ever expected. I can’t wait to cover more ground across Canada to find genetics that I can import back to our herd at home.

Stop by anytime to view our bull & heifer pen!

Commercial Charolais Breeder of the year Allan Farms - Ron & Shirley Allan

By: Joan Airey

Ron and Shirley Allan operate a mixed farming operation northwest of Rathwell, Manitoba. Their herd consists of a hundred and forty head of percentage Charolais as well as a group of forty Black Angus cross cows. They breed everything Charolais except their home raised heifers are bred Red Angus. “We start calving in March and generally back ground all their calves till a year of age bunk feeding them a corn silage base ration. Previous to BSE we fed all our calves finishing them through to slaughter.” said Ron Allan. “I feel the Canadian Charolais Association should promote the Charolais carcass as it is tasty and tender as the blacks. How they are fed, the age at slaughter, how they are handled is what makes the difference.” said Shirley Allan. Ron’s father the late Joe Allan was a pioneer commercial breeder who started using Charolais bulls in the late sixties and continued to during his farming career. “Although we feel the hybrid vigour adds to the performance of the Angus calves, our strong percentage tan and white Charolais feeders always wean heavier and gained better post weaning on our back ground ration. More pounds means more dollars in our pockets. Over the years we have purchased Charolais bulls at Manitoba Bull Test Stations and from many Manitoba Charolais Breeders. ” commented Ron Allan. World Charolais Congress By: Jim Olson

What a great experience! We arrived in Copenhagen a few days early to get our bearings and recover from the anticipated jet lag. I am sure glad we did. It is a long flight (8+ hrs) through the night which I think helped as we could settle down and try to rest during the flight. We quickly got our baggage together and headed to the train station. An excellent way to get around in my experience. Off to check in to hotel and then off to check out some sights around the city. We did a little touring then enjoyed a nice dinner and sleep. Day 2 off to tour Copenhagen proper. We travelled by train to the downtown station and were immersed in Copenhagen. Right across the street is Trivoli an amusement park and garden area that is huge and varied. We walked the downtown area and enjoyed the architecture and soaked up the history that is evident at every corner. We toured some royal residences and castles from the outside as they are working palaces still. Rae even got me on a hop on hop off tour bus which turned out to be kind of fun. Surprise. The people everywhere were extremely friendly and helpful. Quite a few tourists like ourselves but not too bad. The history is all around you here. For lunch we met up with a friend of Rae’s through the IAEA exchange program and she toured us around a bit. We departed after lunch to arrive in Stockholm to join up with the Charolais Congress. We travelled by train to Stockholm about 5 hours from Copenhagen. We were warmly greeted by the host committee and quickly

16

Manitoba Charolais Bulletin

settled into our room. The host group had a reception mingle event underway in the hotel entrance which we joined after checking our bags to the room. The next morning the group attended a welcome event and promptly whistled off to go sightseeing in Stockholm which included the old town and castle. We enjoyed a traditional lunch and a visit to the museum of ones choice. (Wasa or ABBA). We returned to the hotel to freshen up and then loaded onto the buses to attend the official welcome dinner. This included a dinner aboard a tour boat while cruising the archipelago of Stockholm. For those with any energy left there was a walking tour of Stockholm by night. Early the next morning we departed the hotel and travelled to Stora Sundby, a castle originally built around 1546. The castle was rebuilt in the 1800s but the Hall of knights is from the 1600s. The family now owning the castle have been there since 1888 and it is being passed down to the next generation of that family. After a lunch on the castle grounds we loaded the buses and headed off to Knutsa Charolais where we were warmly greeted by Anna and Mattias Wistrand. We toured their well presented herd and enjoyed a nice lunch in their impressive new barn facility. Time to reload the bus and off to Wiklert Charolais were we enjoyed a very nice barbeque and herd visit. Back on the bus and off to the hotel in Orebro. Early the next morning it’s time to board the bus and we head for the Vita Fall operation of Sofia Persson and Stefan Johansson. There we of course enjoy a nice lunch and tour of their herd. Next it’s time to head for either the Vaderstad factory tour or the Vadstena abbey and old town tour. After this we load on the bus and head for a herd tour at Fogdegarden Charolais. This included a evening surprise and some dancing. Then off to our hotel in Jonkoping for the night. The next morning the buses headed for the largest commercial beef breeders operation in Sweden, Johan Tell-Olanda/Dagnas. They have their own brand marketed on grocery shelves through Sweden that is very popular because of the commitment to quality

and consistency of the product. A very large operation that was impressive to me. Onto the buses and off to Lofwings art studio and cafÊ for lunch. Back on the bus to tour the herd of Backgarden Charolais, Anna and Nils Johan Ingvar-Nilsson. After which we returned to the hotel Scandic Elmia in Jonkoping for dinner and rest. The next morning saw us off to Askome Charolais for a very well presented herd tour that included lunch of course then off to Hotel Tyosand where some beef seminars were held that provided an interesting inside look at beef production in Sweden. After the seminars were complete we enjoyed a lovely dinner and entertainment at the hotel. The next day was spent sightseeing in Soderasens National Park after which we enjoyed a herd visit with lunch at Torstarp Charolais, Kristina and Stefan Bergman. Back on the bus and off to Sonarps Charolais for a herd tour and barbeque hosted by Helena and Sven-Olof Hagg. Then off to Hotel Ustad followed by a guided walk through Ystad. Up and at them, next morning off to Degeberga Hills for lunch hosted by Brodakra Charolais. Back on the bus and off to visit Margretevall Charolais with hosts Gunilla and Hans Christersson, we did a hike over the sand dunes to the pasture and cows beside the Baltic Sea. Nice warm cinnamon buns and coffee, for those who wished. Then we hiked a little farther to view ales stenar stones an unusual arrangement of huge stones laid out in the shape of a ship 220 feet long. The carbon dating has determined the stones to be there for about 1400 years. Some of the stones weigh 1.8 tonnes each dating back to the iron age? Back to the bus and return to the hotel for the AGM of Charolais International after which we enjoyed an excellent dinner. The next morning we boarded the buses and headed for Simontorp Charolais for a herd visit and lunch hosted by Kerstin and Per Martensson. After lunch we received a ride to Malmo to meet friends and tour with them for a bit before making our way to the airport to fly home. This was one of the greatest experiences of my life I encourage everyone to try to take part in this type of learning adventure. I apologize if I have missed anything in this report I tried to include as much as possible. There was so much more I can’t get it all down here. Charolais is the largest breed in Sweden, with more than 60% of the cows having Charolais blood. Strict performance record keeping and selection are responsible for reliable performance as required by commercial and purebred breeders alike. The dedication of the breeders has allowed them to develop their animals to what the market wants. Sweden only produces 50% of their consumption of beef so the market is strong to develop. Many pedigrees popular today contain Canadian genetics. Much of the herd is polled(85%). Birth weights average 108 lbs on male calves and slightly less for heifers. This is considered good by the commercial breeders. I want to say during this trip we were exposed to some of the most enthusiastic Charolais breeders of not just Sweden but the world. The conversations on the bus and during every opportunity to get to know them was super. Thanks to the Swedish breeders for hosting the event and thanks to all who attended for getting to know you. My name is Lindsay Verwey, I received $750 in scholarship money from Manitoba Charolais to help with the cost of taking my Agriculture Diploma at the University of Manitoba. I am grateful for all the help I have received from the Charolais association, they truly support the youth and help us to grow to as we are the future of the beef industry. I graduated from the agriculture diploma class this spring and am lucky to have had this experience. I will be furthering my education by taking part in an international agriculture exchange this November to New Zealand to work on a dairy operation for six months. While in New Zealand I look forward to learning more about the cattle industry and bringing back my knowledge to the family farm. Thank you again to the Manitoba Charolais Association for their generosity and support I greatly appreciate it. Sincerely, Lindsay Verwey

11th Annual MANITOBA YOUTH BEEF ROUND UP Manitoba Charolais Youth included: Fisher & Lucas Cavers, Brett & Angel Grieves, The cattle industry is in good hands after watching the participants at Round Up go through their educational and cattle show weekend. On August 3rd to 5th sixty-eight enthusiastic Manitoba and Saskatchewan Junior Cattle Producers attended the 11th annual Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup in Neepawa, Manitoba. Excitement in the cattle industry brought out a top-notch group of interested cattle producers and 96 head of cattle. This year 24 new members attended Roundup for the first time. Where else can you attend an event with 68 Junior members all working together as teams and in individual competitions, to learn the skills needed in the Livestock Industry. This is not just any cattle show, it is an all-around event to promote and educate youth to continue in the livestock industry. Our show would not happen without our dedicated sponsors , parents, Juniors and committee members who have stood behind this Junior All Breeds Show and helped to make it a success. The weekend started off Friday afternoon with a presentation from Sullivan’s Stock Show U instructors Laura Horner and Jake Rawluk on showmanship, hair products and cattle fitting. Friday evening all juniors participated in the Photo Identify Contest.– a fun, hands on challenge where teams work together to complete 10 stations related to the cattle industry. It is a great way for Juniors to work together, make new friendships, learn something new and have fun while doing it! On Saturday, the Juniors were busy with many different events. In the morning they participated in public speaking, individual judging and attended an electric fencing demonstration by Grant House. In the afternoon, the Juniors took part in team judging, team fitting, the stockman’s knowledge competition and the Pee Wees had a demonstration .On Saturday, Scholarship Interviews also took place. Saturday evening was wrapped up with the Cook-Off competition sponsored by Enns Brothers Equipment and a slip n’ slide to cool off for the day! Sunday was show day. Thank-you to our show day judges, Chad Hollinger and Austen Anderson. Juniors participated in showmanship classes in the morning and then confirmation classes in the afternoon. We rounded the day off with a parade of champions and a parade of 4-H champions then finished the evening off with awards. Each and every year Round-Up is a weekend filled with friendships, learning, skills and knowledge. It was once again another successful weekend! Thank you to the judges, presenters and helpers for the weekend
