2015 Keystone Simmental Association

Commercial Producer of the Year The Keystone Simmental Association would like to congratulate our 2015 winners, Oliver Farms - Keith & Penny Oliver, Brad & Rochelle Oliver and Families Keith and Brad Oliver started farming in 1979 in Melita with a grain and livestock operation. The farm had been established by their grandfather in the Everett More presenting award to Keith & Penny Oliver late 30’s. Their livestock herd started with Hereford cows that have since been crossed with traditional Simmental and later Charolais, and are currently bred red Simmental. Their herd consists of 450 cows with calving starting February 1st. The calves are weaned in October and back grounded until the end of January. The cowherd and the bull battery is composed of 90% Simmental genetics. The cow herd is fed a blend of corn and alfalfa silage with free choice straw and hay. Calves are back grounded on a prepared grain ration which is fed free choice. Along with their livestock operation they farm 8000 acres of grain land which is sown primarily to canola, wheat, soybeans and corn. Keith is married to Penny and they have three children, Brooke, Lance and Wade. Brad is married to Rochelle and they also have three children, Alex, Luke and Cole. They all work together to make this fourth generation family operation a success. The Oliver’s would like to thank the Keystone Simmental Association and the Manitoba Simmental Association for this honor.

WELCOME President’s Message

Welcome to the 38th annual Keystone Konnection Simmental Sale. After 2 years of long overdue great calf prices, it appears there will be a little moderation this fall. In this atmosphere, the advantage of having productive efficient cattle becomes even more clear. This sale once again offers you a group of cattle that fit that criteria. This association’s mix of long time consignors and recent additions to our group are bringing you increased numbers this year especially in the bred heifer section. Hope to see you December 6th. Come early to get in on the fun of the Sim-Acta heifer calf event. Everett More President

KEYSTONE KONNECTION 38th Annual Production Simmental Sale This sale has a reputation of providing honest cattle that go on and work for their new owners and providing the best value for dollars invested. The people involved in this sale are some of the best you can work with. They all stand behind their cattle and all work together to make the sale a success. This year, we have a lot more bred heifers than we have had in the past. These heifers have noted breeding dates and will be the kind that could produce herdsires. The select group of heifer calves will be great additions to your herd whether you want a 4-H show heifer or one to make a cow. Look over these heifer calves. Cherry Creek is again coming in with a strong group of herd bull prospects. They will be thick beefy bulls, some with a little extra age to cover more cows for you. We hope to see you at this 38th annual sale to view this excellent offering. If you can not attend but would like some assistance with the offering contact Lois or myself or some of the sale staff.

Our 1st half blood Simmentals were registered in 1972 – mothered by our father Mel’s purebred Hereford cows. We were original members of the now dissolved SouthWest Manitoba Simmental Association. This is our 18th year as a member of the Keystone Simmental Association and we enjoy being part of this great group. Our herd is on a comprehensive herd health program and our consignments have all tested negative for BVDPI. The service sires to our sale heifers are in the top 1% of the breed for calving ease EPDs. Our females are only marketed through this sale and our sale bulls are consigned to the “Rebels Of The West” Bull Sale held at Virden in March. If calving in January is not part of your program, we are willing to make arrangements with you to take any of our consignments home and calve them out for you.

Who doesn’t love a good Simmental female? This sweetheart has the depth, build and muscle to go with it. The Beef King females are stellar. Beef King has established himself as one of the top performance bulls in the breed. Not a large framed bull but the muscle mass and body capacity he transmits is outstanding. He is quite easily the most consistent A.I. bull we have ever used. If you want a really good female, don’t miss this one! Bred A.I. IPU TIGER 73C was the $30,000 high selling and lead off black Simmental bull at the 2016 Labatte/Meadow Acres Bull Sale. Tiger is stylish, long bodied, thick through his top and hind quarter, very loose-made, and has an easy-going disposition. You have to admire the smoothness through his shoulder, which ties into a nicely extended neck and an attractive herd bull head. One of Tiger’s best attributes is the big, perfectly shaped foot beneath him, and his structural soundness is obvious as he walks out with an effortless stride. Check out his MRL El Tigre - Sire video on our website to see for yourself. His pedigree is backed by consistency and quality, yet offers an outcross twist on the bottom side. His sire, the $61,000 El Tigre, consistently produces highly demanded, performance oriented progeny, including very good daughters. Tiger’s dam is as dark red as they come, sound uddered, and has to be one of the best footed 10 year old cows I’ve ever seen. She is the mother of IPU Code Red 53Y, who was a herd bull for Barry Labatte and now walks the pastures at X-T Simmentals, as well as Labatte’s $13,500 high selling open heifer to Ferme Gagnon in 2015. This is your chance to get in on one of the only El Tigre sons with semen available for purchase. Semen is qualified for U.S.A. and Canada, and is stored at Bow Valley Genetics Ltd.
