BULL SALE GUEST CONSIGNORS - ANGUS VALLEY FARM & MCRAE LAND & LIVESTOCK
Welcome to the
15TH ANNUAL MAR MAC BULL SALE TO BE HELD ON THE FARM.
Mar Mac Farms are proud to say in 2019 we have been members of the Canadian Angus Association for 64 years and 43 years in the Canadian Simmental Association We are a fourth generation farm where everyone is involved in the day to day operations. We make our living in Agriculture and are very proud of it! Mar Mac are very proud to offer you another top set of bulls. It is hard to say that our bulls seem to get better every year but we feel this group has the depth of quality all the way through and we are sure you will be impressed when you view the bulls. Mar Mac works hard to produce a top quality product for you our customers that we hope will work in any purebred or commercial operation. We take time to attend Auction Mart sales and see what the market is moving towards and the kind of cattle that the Auction Mart buyers are looking for. Birth weight: The weights you see are the bull’s actual birth weight. Within 12 hours of birth, our calves are weighed, vaccinated, tagged and tattooed. Let’s remember that we get paid by the pound for our calves and length of body adds pounds. Check out the article in the catalog on Birth Weight and Calving Ease. Mar Mac has tried hard to keep that length and natural thickness in all of their divisions. This year in the Red Angus, Black Angus and Simmental, you will find power bulls for your cows, and heifer bulls for those ease of calving individuals. 98% of our calves are born unassisted and we feel mainly due to our cowherd being fed out in paddocks with lots of exercise, blended rations, and bull selection. When we select a herd sire, the bull’s mother or grandmother is an important part of our selection. Stop by anytime to view the dams of these bulls, we are very proud of the cowherd we have assembled. We have spent long hours researching our herd bull battery and are very proud of the cow bulls and heifer bulls we have added to our program. If they do not work for us they are gone. Our cowherd grazed most of the winter on corn and bale grazing till calving season. Once they are brought home from our other farm, the cows are fed a silage, hay and straw mixture. Our calves are not crept fed in the summer, so we can evaluate the full potential of the cowherd. As you will see in this book, Mar Mac really concentrates on cow families and they must produce to stay here. This summer we were extremely dry and we had to wean a month earlier as we were short of grass. Two weeks before weaning, a feeder with an oat pellet ration is put in the field to get the bulls used to eating away from their mothers. Then one week before weaning, the low stress quiet weans are put in. These are nose clips that are inserted into the calves to prevent sucking. Calves are returned to the pasture with their mothers for 5 days. At the time of the nose wean insertion, fall booster vaccines are administered. They receive Bovishield Gold 5 One Shot ( BVD, BRSV,IBR, PI3 and Mannhemia) and an Ultrabac 7/Somubac booster. Calves also received an initial deworming with Safteguard. Pour on Ivermectin products are administered in mid October as a second deworming and for external parasite control. Weaning day the bulls are weighed, weaned and brought home. Once home they are started on a TMR ration of corn silage, hay, grain and supplement ration that has been balanced and formulated for longevity and fertility. These sale bulls have been through a strict culling process with structural soundness, ease of fleshing, and disposition taken into consideration. Any of the bulls in the sale, we would use in our program. We would like to retain the right to collect 200 straws of semen for our own herd use at your convenience and our expense, on any of these bulls. At Mar Mac Customer Service is very important; we talk to our buyers at least once during the year to see how the bulls are doing. If you have a problem with your bull, we expect you to call and talk to us. A group of our Angus bulls have been Leptin tested as requested by some customers see the result sheets on sale day. As you see in the catalog we have a larger group of coming 2 year old bulls. These bulls are virgin bulls and developed specifically for this sale. They are not leftovers; this is an added feature if you have a large pasture that an older bull can handle more cows. Brett McRae (McRae Land and Livestock) has expanded his program in the Angus and this year is offering a top group of yearlings and coming 2 year olds. In the future Brett will be expanding this division with his April May born Angus bulls. Our cousin, Angus Valley Farms (Bruce McRae) has a top end group of Black Angus bulls The bulls are all fed in one spot, you will find fatter bulls but these are fed to last. We will be offering this year, bred commercial females from our operation. We welcome the T Bar C crew to our 2019 sale. They have been out and evaluated the cattle. Please feel free to talk to one of them or any of our sale staff or our family members if you have questions about the bulls or our program. You can bid online sale day at DLMS and see the videos of the bulls at cattlevids.ca. or marmacfarms.net. Hosting a sale takes a lot of hard work and we would like to thank our friends and neighbors that have helped make these days so successful over the years. We look forward to meeting with you on sale day, although we can not visit with everyone, we would like to thank you for attending our sale and supporting our Beef program.
Blair and Lois McRae p.s. Join us for our tasty Mar Mac homegrown Roast Beef lunch at noon. Our sale barn is heated but the bulls are on display outside, so dress accordingly

You will notice in our catalogue that we have not printed the EPD’s for the Red Angus bulls. With the decision made by the Canadian Angus Association to change to the new “Angus One program” for their EPD calculations. We feel that they do not correctly reflect the true evaluation of the Red Angus breed. Our main focus is to breed Red Angus cattle with calving ease, performance, ease of fleshing and structural correctness that will work in the beef industry. We will continue to focus on that in our program. The Bolt numbers will be available from Mar Mac Farms and the Angus One numbers are on the Canadian Angus web site.

This Cash son out of an impressive feminine Gangster female is outcross genetics for our program. His first set of calves are very thick made, good footed, and will make a mark in our program. His first daughter sold at Red Roundup to Blake’s Red Angus and made the finals in the heifer calf futurity show. Check out his sons not many in the sale as we had mostly females in 2018 but his sons are impressive.

Capacity’s pedigree is outcross to many producers with a Black Angus, Wall Street dam. Capacity has done a tremendous job of breeding at Mar Mac with adding performance, meat, muscle and scrotal to his sons and adds natural thickness and leaves good milking females. Capacity daughters were some of the features in our fall New Generation Female Sale and his sons in the 2019 are an impressive group of individuals.

If you are looking for a herdsire with that herd bull head, good feet, extremely thick made from front to back and eye appeal then look no further. Firststep caught your eye all summer but now has put it all together. This is Ripzone’s first set of calves and WOW. A ½ sister sold in Canadian Red Roundup for $5000 to Blake’s Red Angus and was one of the finalists in the Junior Futurity competition. Thanks to Reece Wildman for selecting her to show. When Sunset Ridge dispersed, Mar Mac were lucky enough to purchase Meranda 3A. Her son was the top selling bull calf and this female is just starting to get into production in our herd. Her coming 2 year old son who was a twin is Lot 25 in this sale. A moderate framed female whose dam is the granddam of the mother of Lady Trooper cow family. If you are looking for a herdsire to add some new genetics, ease of fleshing and natural thickness with a moderate birth weight, Firststep is a candidate. Mar Mac reserves the right to draw semen for in herd use only.

When we go to select a herdsire, the dam is so important and First Class has a classy dam. I don’t know if we have ever raised such an unbelievable tremendous broody, heavy milking female that is one of Lois’s favorite at Mar Mac. Lady Trooper we sold a ½ interest in Red Roundup to Brylor Ranch and we flushed Trooper intensely and then Brylor sold their ½ to Dale McKay. First Class is one of the results of the flush if you want to add body volume, thickness and pounds to your calves here he is. Mulberry as many of you know was one of the top Red Angus bulls that ever walked in Canada and even with all his performance and ideal structure, he added calving ease to his progeny. This is a unique pedigree to add maternal and paternal strength. Mar Mac reserves the right to draw semen for in herd use only.
In 2018, Mar Mac Farms was honored to be selected as the Canadian Red Angus Promotional Society Breeder of the Year. Blair and Lois attended Red Roundup in 2018 in Olds, Alberta to accept the award present by CRAPS president, Brent Troyer, To see the full article, on our family history in the Red Angus breed visit our website; www.marmacfarms.net

You can never add enough strong genetics to your program if they are consistently working in the industry. That is why we A.I. ed Ruby 24Y to Mulberry. Mulberry impressed us from the first time we set eyes on him. His calving ease yet extreme length of body and thickness was impressive. Frontiers dam was the Heifer Calf Champion at the National show in Brandon and what an amazing job she has done for our program.. Sons are working in the Guild Farms and Rooke Farm herds. Wraz Red Angus selected a daughter in our Mar Mac Female Sale and at the recent T Bar K dispersal, 24Y’s Detour daughter was one of the sale features selling to Trask Red Angus in BC. Calving Ease here we are, the Riddler’s come easy but still have the length and hip for the end product .
BIRTH WEIGHT AND CALVING EASE
University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions.
1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%. 2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf. 3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny. 4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf has 35-40% influence on calving ease. 5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation. 6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation. 7. Size and maturity of the cow influences calving ease. Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer-bodied calf with weight more. If a calf is expected to have the genetics to growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb , it takes a calf weighing 85 lbs. at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200 lb cow should give birth to a 96 lb calf with ease.

LIVESTOCK NUTRITION IS OUR FOCUS AT CARGILL ANIMAL NUTRITION We understand they are cattle producers but also understand they are grain producers as well. We encourage producers to grow as many ingredients on farm as they can and we will help fill the nutritional gaps that the forages and energies leave. McRae’s grow the silages, hay, straw and grains that help provide protein, energy and some minerals and their Custom Bull Developer Supplement will provide the nutritional shortages to balance their programs requirements. Our goal is to raise well grown out bulls that will go out and cover females without breaking down and melting away. We want the bulls to mature and grow in a sound development program and we are very conscious about not getting them over conditioned and to cool down the bulls post sale to get them used to their new surroundings and environment. This sound nutrition we design will help enhance growth and performance, sound structure, feet and legs, hair and reproductive development with increased scrotal development and semen quality. I balance MarMac’s feeding programs with Cargill’s BEEF MAX Ration Balancing Program. We balance to different types of proteins, amino acids, fibers, chelated minerals and selenium, vitamins and the natural Diamond V-NaturSafe product to enhance stronger immunity and absorption of nutrients. Cargill’s goal with Mar Mac Farms is to continue our communication with the success of their Bull Development Program for their customers.
RED ANGUS COMING 2 YEAR OLD BULLS
These bulls are not leftovers, these bulls were planned to be in the sale with a little extra age. As you will notice sale day these bulls have a great disposition for being born out on grass. Here are bulls you can buy with confidence as there are some top genetics in them

We are super excited to see the Tomahawk calves.

We wanted to add some outcross genetics to our herd with a sire that will add eye appeal, and performance. The reports are that the calves come small and grow fast making Sensation liked by purebred and commercial producers. This extremely fertile son grandson of Rito 707of Ideal bred to our Brandi donor female 9T is a Final Answer female who has been a very productive female. Rito, Traveller 004, Final Answer and Fortune 425C wow now those are interesting genetics to build a program on. Brandi 9T is an elite cow in the Canadian Angus, see article on the page to the left.

A 2 year old March bull that we really like out of a Commander Bond bred cow. Outcross genetics, the Bond females have made beautiful mother cows and very easy fleshing. This bull was under the year of age at sale time last year so he was held over specifically to add some bulls with more age. Lots of potential here. With Bond coming out of Scotland the EPD's started from 0, it will take time for the numbers to build up. BW 70

MCRAE LAND & LIVESTOCK BRETT MCRAE -- BRANDON, MB -- 204-729-1018 BRETT.MCRAE@ICLOUD.COM
McRae Land & Livestock cattle are put to the test and are specifically selected for Fertility, Soundness, and Low Maintenance requirements. I am pleased to bring you the 2019 MCLL bull offering. Again this year, I have some 2 year old bulls, as well as yearlings. All of the mothers of these bulls will be brought home for sale day so you can see them in their working clothes. 2 year olds: These bulls have been selected at birth for the 2 year old program, These are NOT left over yearlings! These bulls were calved on pasture and have been slow grown for increased performance and longevity. If you want the most bang for your buck, buy a two year old bull, they can cover more cows than yearlings, and they don’t need any special treatment after breeding season. Yearlings: I specifically selected a group of the Sandy Bar cows to calve in February to be able to offer a group of yearling bulls this year. To avoid a log jam in the calving barn, those cows were exposed 3 weeks later than the main winter calving group, and only exposed for 21 days. Therefore, all of the yearlings that I have to offer are 1st cycle calves. All of these calves are out of the legendary Mar Mac Tiger 170A bull. Tiger 170A, has left some tremendous females in our herd, and I am confident that these bulls can do the same for you!

Knight 232E is a very masculine but that is the only bull in the sale out of my own cows. I purchased his dam as a bred heifer from the Johnston/Fertile Valley sale in 2013. 311Z is a very capacious cow with lots of depth of rib and spring of rib. I have been fairly impressed with the Coleman Knight calves. He makes very nice females. They have lots of capacity and hair, and look like they will be great cows in the future.
