Welcome to the 14th Annual Mar Mac Bull Sale to be held on the farm. Mar Mac Farms are proud to say in 2018 we have been members of the Canadian Angus Association for 63 years and 42 years in the Canadian Simmental Association

As many of you know on our bull sale date last year was the tail end of the 3 day blizzard in Manitoba. All highways were closed and after much stressful consideration we decided to go ahead with the sale at 3 p.m. as a video online sale as so hard to find another date. We ended up with 14 people in the stands. It is with heartfelt thanks to our past customers and new customers at last years sale that made it a tremendous success. 98% of the bulls sold sight unseen and we are proud to say that our customers were happy with their purchases. Again heartfelt thanks to our customers support, viewers online, DLMS, sale crew and neighbors who helped plow us out, for helping us get through this stressful time. A sale we will never forget. Mar Mac are very proud to offer you another top set of bulls. It is hard to say that our bulls seem to get better every year but they do. With the tools of BW, WW, YW, EPD’s and of course with the use of our eyes evaluating the confirmation. Mar Mac works hard to produce a top quality product for you our customers, who we hope will work in any purebred or commercial operation. We take time to attend auction mart sales and see what the market is moving towards and the kind of cattle that the commercial cattle buyers are looking for. Birth weight: The weights you see are the bulls actual birth weight. Within 12 hours of birth, our calves are weighed, vaccinated, tagged and tattooed. Let’s remember that we get paid by the pound for our calves and length of body adds pounds. Mar Mac has tried hard to keep that length and natural thickness in all of their divisions. This year in the Red Angus, Black Angus and Simmental, you will find power bulls for your cows, and heifer bulls for those ease of calving individuals. 98% of our calves are born unassisted and we feel mainly due to our cowherd being fed out in paddocks with lots of exercise, blended rations, and bull selection. When we select a herd sire, the bull’s mother or grandmother is an important part of our selection. Stop by anytime to view the dams of these bulls, we are very proud of the cowherd we have assembled. We have spent long hours researching our herd bull battery and are very proud of the cow bulls and heifer bulls we have added to our program. If they do not work for us they are long gone. Our cowherd grazed most of the winter on corn and bale grazing till calving season. Once they are brought home from our other farm, the cows are fed a silage, hay and straw mixture. Our calves are not crept fed in the summer, so we can evaluate the full potential of the cowherd. As you will see in this book, Mar Mac really concentrates on cow families and they must produce to stay here. Their actual weaning weights also help you evaluate what cows are working for you. One month before weaning, a feeder with an oat pellet ration is put in the field to get the bulls used to eating away from their mothers. Then one week before weaning, the quiet weans are used. Weaning day the bulls are weighed, weaned and brought home. Once home they are started on corn silage, hay, grain and supplement ration that has been balanced and formulated for longevity and fertility. These sale bulls have been through a strict culling process with structural soundness, ease of fleshing, and disposition taken into consideration. Any of the bulls in the sale, we would use in our program. We would like to retain the right to collect 200 straws of semen for our own herd use at your convenience and our expense, on any of these bulls. At Mar Mac Customer Service is very important, we talk to our buyers at least once during the year to see how the bulls are doing. If you have a problem with your bull, we expect you to call and talk to us. Our Angus bulls have been Leptin tested as requested by some customers see the result sheets on sale day. Brett McRae (McRae Land and Livestock) has expanded his program in the Angus and this year is offering some long yearling Angus bulls. Our cousin, Bruce McRae (Angus Valley Farms) has a top end group of Black Angus bulls The bulls are all fed in one spot, you will find fatter bulls but these are fed to last. We will be offering this year, bred commercial females and open commercial females. The bred heifers are all raised at the McRae’s. All bulls have completed a breeding soundness evaluation. If your bull fails to be a satisfactory breeder, we will replace him with a bull of equal value or give you your money back. We guarantee you will have a sound bull to service your cows. We will not provide a replacement if your bull has been miss managed. At no time shall the liability exceed the purchase price of your bull. Bulls under one year of age on semen test day will be tested after their birthday, before you need them.

Calving Ease Score...

We evaluate each bull for calving ease determined by bone size, birth weight, birth weight EPD and profile. Scoring is as follows: ••• Recommended for use on moderate framed first calf heifers, of same breed. Should produce minimal or no calving trouble. •• Recommended for use on large framed first calf heifers & cows. Should produce minimal or no calving trouble. • Recommended for use on cows. DELIVERY

If you pick up your bull at the farm on sale day, you can save $100 off the purchase price. We offer to board your bull free until April 15, after that at cost until you need him. As well, we will deliver your bull free to central points in Western Canada or the US Border and cost will be shared to Eastern Canada. We will make every effort to get the bull to your farm. Delivery will be as close to the date you request your bull, but will be at our convenience. If you can not take your bull when we are in your area, we would appreciate if you made arrangements to pick up your bull.

PIECE OF MIND

Your new bull is a valuable asset and we recommend insuring your bull for infertility coverage and all risk mortality. If you are taking advantage of our wintering program, your new bull must be insured so we both have peace of mind. Insurance will be available from Keystone Livestock Services.

We are so impressed by how docile, free moving, structurally sound and thick topped Ribeye is. A number of the Red Angus bulls are out of Ribeye females. It will be very hard to replace Ribeye as no matter bulls or females, they worked. We are so proud of the Ribeye females they are strong producers in our program.

In our search for some new outcross genetics, we searched out this Capacity son out of a Wallstreet dam. Some new genetics that we felt would benefit our program. We are extremely impressed with the depth, volume and natural meat and muscle that Capacity has injected into our calf crop. In our search for some new genetics in our Black Angus program we found Insight at the Right Cross Bull Sale. We were impressed with his ease of fleshing, good strong head and lots of length. Look at the stout set of bulls in the sale out of Insight. We tested Insight and he is homozygous black.

Mar Mac bull program has been developed using the highest amount of silage and hay in the ration along with grain and supplement to achieve the energy and protein requirements they need to develop. The program is designed to achieve optimal gain, lean growth and skeletal frame but not to have excess condition on the bulls. The supplement used is the Nutre Beef Bull Developer Supp which enhances fertility, testical size, hair growth and foot health. Regards, Doug Allison

Tiger and the outcross sire Rex from New Zealand. When in New Zealand, both Brett and Melissa were impressed with the Turihaua Rex cattle. We have used him in our herd and have some very moderate framed, tight uddered daughters. Here is a Tiger son that I think has a great future ahead of him.

The expected difference in performance of a bulls progeny when compared to the average progeny performance of all bulls evaluated. EPD’s cannot be compared cross breed. Breed Averaged are at the start of each breed section.

CE Calving Ease - percentage of unassisted births with the more positive number indicating greater calving ease. BW Birth Weight - the birth weight of a bulls progeny when compared to the breed average, in pounds. WW Weaning Weight - the adjusted weaning weight of a bulls progeny when compared to the breed average, in pounds. YW Yearling Weight - the adjusted yearling weight of a bulls progeny when compared to the breed average, in pounds. M Milk - a measure of amount of pre weaning performance gained by calves which can be attributed to the milking ability of a bull’s

daughters. The EPD is expressed in pounds of calf.

It predicts the weaning weight of a sire’s daughter’s calves. If is equal to the milk EPD plus 1/2 of this weaning weight EPD.

TM Total Maternal - each of these terms measures a sires ability to transmit milk production and growth rate though his daughters.

Therefore, 2018 marks the first year of McRae Land & Livestock! My goal is to provide high quality Angus genetics that are especially selected for: • Fertility - Masculine bulls with abundant testicular development. Feminine cows that breed back quickly and bring a calf in their belly and a calf at side every fall. • Soundness - Cattle with correct feet, leg and udder structure, as well as soundness of mind (docility) • Low Maintenance - Easy keeping cattle that can efficiently convert forages into beef, and don’t require a lot of fuss! Another first this year will be the first time I have April/May born long yearling bulls for sale. These bulls are the first of my spring calving program. They were born and raised on pasture. From weaning to the fall of 2017 they were put with the herd bulls to grow on a low energy ration. Now they are ready for the sale, and ready to work! On offer this year will also be the first crop of calves from the Sandy Bar cows. In November, 2016 I began renting 50 bred heifers from Sandy Bar Angus, Aneroid, SK. These bull calves came in dam and are the mix of Sandy Bar’s breeding with a Manitoba environment. The Sandy Bar program has been long known for producing cattle with calving ease, thickness, and eye appeal that can work in harsh conditions. I am very excited to offer these cattle for sale, and I am very confident that they will work for you! If you have any questions about them or would like to come take a look at the herd, I would love to show you around!

In our search for some new genetics, we came across Marksman. A strong maternal dam, and going back to the Trademark son of Kopp Farms. His first 2 calf crops have left thick made, meaty progeny that are working well in our program. We have a smaller number of Simmental bulls this year as we had a big heifer calf crop but we feel the quality is as good as ever before.

Johnny Cash sold through our Mar Mac Farms and Guests Bull Sale to Wayne Heinrichs. Wayne lives close by and calves later in the season, so we use Johnny Cash before he starts breeding. Since day one, Johnny Cash was a stand out with his blaze face and lots of natural thickness, depth of quarter and just the cowboy kind of bull. In our Simmental program, we want to add some performance to our Simmental cattle as those extra pounds are what brings in the big pay cheques at the auction marts.

This may be one of the best Simmental bulls we have ever raised. A soft made, naturally thick, full of red meat, structurally sound, dark cherry red hair coat and great testicular development. Look at his EPD’s wow. Here is a Herd Bull. His dam 79U is a Red Label female of Melissa’s that always lays down and has a good one. One of her son’s Johnny Cash was used extensively in our program and a number of the top sons sold in the sale last year.
