Foreword ‘Samyak – Journey to Perfection’ was the theme for 2018 Foundation Fortnight at WeSchool Bengaluru Campus. Each year Foundation Fortnight is held to celebrate the commencement of the new academic year and to welcome the new batch into WeSchool family. Samyak stands for getting polished and the WeSchool fraternity look forward to help students chisel their knowledge and skills in more than one dimension. The Neev 2018 was inaugurated by Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri Dr. B. N. Suresh, Chancellor, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, and President of Indian National Academy of Engineering, Delhi. Each day during the Neev 2018 – Samyak was truly engaging as students listened and interacted with leading personalities from the industry. The ‘Guru speak’ article by our faculty member speaks about the Blockchain in Supply Chain Management. We are glad to map entrepreneur Ms. Malabika Das’s journey from being a Design Consultant for a home furnishing brand to starting her own venture. Her passion would surely encourage the youngsters. There was the 6th AIM – AMA Sheth Foundation Doctoral Consortium and International Research Conference on the theme “Marketing in a Digital Age”, mentored by Dr. V. Kumar, the Co-Founder of Academy of Indian Marketing and the Executive Director of the Center for Excellence in Brand & Customer Management at the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, US and Dr. Jagdish N. Sheth, a Senior Professor at Emory University and a cult ﬁgure in the ﬁeld of Marketing Management. The issue also covers various events organized by different departments – Arthakul – the Finance Club and BD Start Inc., besides the Summer Internship Contest 2018. Further, WeShool hosted the 30th AIMS Annual Management Education Convention 2018. This issue offers a glimpse of students’ achievements, Celebration of Family Day, Independence Day and Joga Bonito – the annual sports event.

Involve me and I learn.” - Benjamin Franklin In a recent study by Microsoft, it has been found that the average human attention span is now less than that of a Goldﬁsh – less than nine seconds. This drop is attributed to the proliferation of technology, including smartphones. Needless to say that in such an era teaching and providing the right learning environment has become a challenge. Humans usually display two types of attention – external and internal. While external attention is related to processing information through our senses from the world, internal attention refers how we select and process information from our memory and feelings. Learning happens when we encompass both. Consecutively, one of the key factors in learning is involvement of the learner in the learning process. Keeping that in mind, WeSchool provide a wholesome approach to education through the state of art facilities such as innovation lab, learning resource center, a transformative and intensive curriculum, dedicated faculty members and an opportunity of collaborative learning among students that come from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. The basic principle is to be aware of the changing industry needs and equip our students with conceptual knowledge, application tools and shape them as globally responsible citizens capable of addressing the industry needs. I welcome the students of the new batch 2018-20 to our WeSchool family.

The world is rapidly changing. For today’s students, it is no longer enough to know only the basic facts and skills. Rather, it has become indispensable to hone the capacity to think analytically to solve problems and train the mind for continuous learning. Thus, a culture of thinking has become very essential to our learning framework. Our strength lies in our ability to adopt a balanced approach towards education that encourage teamwork, help developing complex thinking skills and focus on future needs of the industry. We nurture students to become ‘complete’ individuals in the two years of their tenure with us by inculcating understanding, curiosity and ‘concern for truth’ in their minds. Prameya- the campus magazine is a students’ initiative supported by faculty members that captures the details of our events, activities conducted, latest trend in the external environment as well applauds the achievement of both students and faculty members.

‘Samyak – Journey to Perfection’ was the theme for ‘Neev 2018’- the Foundation Fortnight at WeSchool, Bengaluru Campus.

Neev 2018 started with zeal and enthusiasm on 20 June 2018, with lighting of the lamp ceremony in the esteemed presence of our Chief Guest, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri Dr. B. N. Suresh, Chancellor, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, and President of Indian National Academy of Engineering, Delhi, Advocate Shri S. K. Event | Neev 2018 Prof. Dr. Salunkhe in his opening address welcomed all the dignitaries and students. He shared the core values of We School – Passion, Breakthrough thinking and breakthrough execution, Result oriented process driven work ethic, Care for society and nation at large. He urged the students to internalize these values. Students should ﬁnd their “role of self in the society” and work towards it. He wished and hoped that two years at WeSchool Bengaluru would bring phenomenal transformation in the students - the raw diamonds would get perfectly chiseled.

Space scientist Dr. B. N. Suresh shared his managerial experiences and wisdom. According to him, management should involve innovation, creative leadership, taking a wholesome approach, ability of the leader to take apt decisions keeping in mind the sustainability of the planet.

The day progressed with Prof. Dr. Uday Salunkhe’s Address to the New Students and the Keynote Address on Sustainability by Mr. Ashwin Mahesh, A social Technologist and the Co-Founder of Lithium. The second day of Neev 2018 started with celebrating International Yoga Day. Yoga is a 5,000-year-old tradition from India that combines physical, mental and spiritual pursuits to achieve harmony of the body and mind. Mr. Supriyo Ghosh, an alumnus of We School Bangalore took the Yoga sessions and the students participated enthusiastically.

Event | Neev 2018 Second day onwards, on each and every day of Neev 2018 students enjoyed the opportunity to interact with corporate guest speakers in the WeDwath session. Day – 2 guest speaker for this session was Mr. Ganesh Kumar Ramanathan, Director, Strategy & Operations, CISCO India delivered an encouraging and insightful talk on “Building The Brand You”. Mr. Ramanathan enumerated the ﬁve Golden rules of personal Brand Building:

Mr. Ramanathan enumerated the five Golden rules of Brand Building, which are as follows: 1. It takes time to build a brand. 2. You are unique. Create your own brand. 3. You are unique, but never indispensable. 4. Don’t compare yourself with others or compete with other brands. 5. Brands go through tough time. Resiliency and consistency are important. Just as it is true for an organization, the brand building for an individual requires one to focus on defining the vision, mission and values that will define and guide one’s career path. In order to find out what our “core” values are, we must identify our strengths, our interests and then try to see if these strengths and interests benefit others or not.

Our next guest speaker was Mr. Swami Krishnan, VP & Head Talent Engagement and Development, Sasken Communication Technologies, was our guest speaker to start the day. Being a “talent-mentor”, Mr. Krishnan knew how to energize, engage and educate the audience. The session was interactive and he shared valuable tips to students to attain a happy and content life. He advised the students to be slow and steady, give importance to professional network and stress management, must take care of their health and stay ﬁt, try to simply life, serve people in need and inculcate spirituality. On Day-4, the guest speaker was Mr. M. Ramani, MD, Load Control Group of Companies. Mr. Ramani gave an interesting probe on the ‘3C’s to build one’s career’ namely Clarity, Competence and Commitment. To gain clarity on their career path, he urged the students to spend meaningful time to discover their subconscious mind. The students need to understand their means goals and end goals. While the end goals could be the larger aspects of life such as health, good relationship and ﬁnancial freedom, the means goals are the various paths to achieve end goals. Competence, on the other hand, could be built only after understanding the competency gap. Former US President Abraham Lincoln once stated that “commitment is what transforms a promise into reality”. Setting up our ‘end goals’ and steering ourselves towards the right ‘means goals’ is very important for building a satisfying career.

Event | Neev 2018 Next day, Mr. Prateek Madhav, GM-Accenture and Board Member & Former CEO of Samarthanam Trust for the differently abled persons was the guest speaker. The session started with a short video clip of Paralympics with a “yes, I can” do attitude to do the impossible and come off in flying colors, despite life’s hardships. It’s the hope, courage, conﬁdence and passion that steers human beings to win against all the odds. Mr. Shekhar Naik, the former Captain of the Indian National Blind Cricket Team shared the podium with Mr. Madhav, and divulged his encouraging life journey. Mr. Naik encouraged the students to take every life challenge as an opportunity….and sometimes one could end up in a better position after the adversity or inconvenience. The session ended with a positive feeling when Mr. Madhav urged all the students to chant “yes I can” along with him. ‘It’s never late to become what you might have been’ was his parting message.

The next guest speaker was Dr. Angshuman Ghosh, Lead Data Scientist at Target. He started his session right from the basic understanding of data science. “What is data science?” – was his ﬁrst question to the students. Through an interactive brain storming he made students understand the need for data science, the difference of data science from data analysis and the factors contributing to the increasing importance of data science. Data science is an evolving ﬁeld and he was sure that many of the students would curve a career as data scientist in future. Next day, our guest speaker was Mr. Prabhanjan Deshpande, Co-Founder The Higher Pitch, a performance marketing company, specializing in digital marketing, digital experience management and integrated marketing services. The session started with interesting responses from the students to Mr. Deshpande’s question “Why an MBA”. Using the analogy of a conditioner and shampoo, he emphasized that an MBA curriculum ﬁne tunes a student’s career choice. Mr. Deshpande’s mantra for Millennials to create their own Brand Identity was: • Practice the strength of silence – the students need to learn to say the right words at the right times and also practice silence when needed. • Break the limit – one should know what he/she does not know • Play a long game • Follow the 90:10 rule – 10% of our success is dedicated to our core work whereas 90% of success depends on our people management skills. His parting message to the students was “Be yourself to be different”.

Event | Neev 2018 The next guest speaker was Mr. Prataap B, CEO, Ground Reality – a company that works for social and community development. The theme of the talk was “a journey towards excellence”. Mr. Prataap started his career as a pilot in Indian Army and then explored different avenues like entrepreneurship, national level shooting and marathon running. Later, during his talk, decoding leadership he urged that a leader is the one who is ‘asked’ what to do rather than being ‘told’ what to do. A leader strongly anchored to ethical values displayed through his actions will be able to sustain success. While values, vision and learnings guide us towards excellence, the mediocracy, doubtfulness, directionless act as hindrance to achieve excellence. A visionary leader is the one who can think beyond others and reach his/her goal before others. He enthused students to transcend the boundaries and become visionary leaders.

Next day, Mr. Nitin Bhatia, Managing Director, Meltwater India was the guest speaker. Mr. Bhatia has more than a decade's experience in mainstream media, sales, people development & introducing new products and business lines in the Indian market. Popularly known as "Mr. Bean of Digital Marketing in India", Bhatia launched Meltwater's ﬁrst offering in Artiﬁcial Intelligence in Digital Marketing called 'Executive Alerts' in India & across Europe, Middle East and Africa. ‘Executive Alerts’ is a tool designed for Top Executives who can get real time alerts on threats & opportunities arising in their business. Mr. Bhatia urged students to understand their purpose in life and then live such a life that would help them to serve the purpose. He shared his life-story and various anecdotes to explain the students that how he is living a life that serves his purpose. He believes “sales is a life skill” and some way or the other, each and every one of us is selling something. More than ‘talent’, it’s the perseverance that pays off in life. It’s the inner grit and hunger to excel that keep us moving forward. Students should grab the opportunities as the opportunities available today might not be there in future. The next guest speaker was Mr. Anil Kumar Patro, Director HR, Asia Paciﬁc, Meritor Commercial Vehicle Systems India Pvt. Ltd., was our guest speaker today. Mr. Patro, a results-driven and metric focused HR professional, had a strong belief in leveraging diversity to drive business results. His session focused on “Career Life Cycle and Self – Management Approach”. He said that career planning was a life -long process. Career planning encompasses choosing an occupation, getting a job, growing in the job, possibly changing the job and eventually retiring from the job. Along all these milestones, he urged the students to keep “upskill” and differentiate themselves from others. Time and again one should ask the question “Who am I?” and introspect to understand one’s core values and likes/dislikes. Employees are happy when their value system closely matches the values of the organization. Young executives should be able to seek their “role model” and mentors who can guide them towards new learnings and experiences. Once the students decide on their life goal, they should asses the skill gaps and work towards bridging it. Every year they should map their success and failures. While success is going to boost their conﬁdence, failures will provide great learning and insights.

He has over 30 years of experience in handling the transformation of Human Resources into a Strategic Partner, facilitated organizationwide transformation and capability development and was instrumental in building a strong talent pool through a series of Leadership Development initiatives. It was an interesting session where Mr. Shankar made students aware of the three important areas of change that the human race is going through right now that would shape our future. The most signiﬁcant one is technology. Artiﬁcial intelligence (AI), automation and Internet of Things (IoT) is changing our lifestyle. AI is basically an algorithm that keep improving itself. AI is powered by fast processors and data science. Together, they can predict many of the repeated human behavior and trends.

The next guest speaker was Mr. Deepak Prabhu Matti, Director CSR, Cognizant was the guest speaker today. He has more than 22 years of experience in Project Management and over 8 years in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). As a CSR leader, he helps company’s executives and senior managers achieve their CSR goals. The students were highly encouraged to know about the wide range of CSR activities practiced by Cognizant.

Blockchain in Supply Chain Management

Dr. Karishma Chaudhary Assistant Professor - Operations, WeSchool Bengaluru In this digital era, almost all business models have been undergoing unprecedented disruptions due to endless advances in cutting-edge ICTs. Blockchain being the most prominent and highly disruptive technology is already remodelling traditional business models and creating new opportunities across the entire supply chain. Blockchain is basically a distributed ledger technology which has the potential to eliminate huge amounts of record-keeping, save money and disrupt IT in ways not seen since the internet arrived. First and foremost, Blockchain isn't a single technology, rather it's an architecture that can be openly shared among disparate users and that creates an unchangeable record of their transactions, each one time-stamped and linked to the previous one. Each digital record or transaction in the thread is called a block (hence the name), and it allows either an open or controlled set of users to participate in the electronic ledger. Each block is linked to a specific participant. Hence, Blockchain is a public, distributed and immutable database. In essence, blockchain represents a new paradigm for the way information is shared and tech vendors and companies are rushing to figure out how they can use the distributed ledger technology to save time and admin costs. Numerous companies have started rolling out pilot programs and real-world projects across a variety of industries - everything from financial services to healthcare to mobile payments and even global shipping. Where is blockchain useful? With blockchain, we can imagine a world in which contracts are embedded in digital code and stored in transparent, shared databases, where they are protected from deletion, tampering, and revision. Such contracts are called Smart Contracts. In this world every agreement, every process, every task, and every payment would have a digital record and signature that could be identified, validated, stored, and shared. The smart contract will function exactly as it has been programmed providing no scope for fraud or some other interference. A smart contract can take input from a ledger and trigger an event. For example, if a payment has been received, the smart contract can trigger a delivery. Or if a condition has not been respected (for example, timely delivery or proper storage), the smart contract can trigger a penalty or another action. Hence, third-party go-betweens are not needed and manual checking of conditions and events can be avoided which will save costs and time. Intermediaries like lawyers, brokers, and bankers might no longer be necessary. Individuals, organizations, machines, and algorithms would freely transact and interact with one another with little friction. This is the immense potential of blockchain. Hence, Blockchain is useful in situations where: - There is lack of trust i.e. dealing with unknown suppliers, customers and service providers. - Many parties need a single version of the truth i.e. coordination among multiple parties, processes and assets is needed, where disputes are common and their resolution is expensive, proving authenticity and ownership. - Where multiple serial steps of paper work slowdown the processes such as global trade documentation, Supply chain finance etc.

Guruspeak - Where auditability is important like regulated supply chains, socially responsible supply chains. - where reliable visibility of events across multiple parties has high value eg. Recalls, chain-of-custody tracking, provenance, etc. - where fraud and data tampering is problem e. fraud - prevalent supply chains and information chains. - dealing at spot markets and marketplaces and using shared resources. - asset management. Benefits of Blockchain One of the biggest problems faced by companies with complex supply chains is a lack of transparency. Sometimes, if you have multiple suppliers across multiple states and countries, it can be hard to keep track of everything. Pinpointing issues can be difficult because of all the moving parts. This is where something like blockchain can shine, according to the Harvard Business Review article. Specifically, blockchain supply chain innovations can deliver the follow key benefits listed in Table below:

Supply chain applications of blockchain: The following examples are now in use or can be implemented today using existing technology. Automotive supplier payments Blockchain allows the transfer of funds anywhere in the world directly between payer and payee. It is also secure and rapid – in minutes, compared to days for automated clearing house payments. Bitcoin transfers speciﬁcally also offer lower fees. Australian vehicle manufacturer Tomcar uses bitcoin to pay suppliers. Currently, three partners in Israel and Taiwan accept this. Tomcar’s supplier agreements use standard terms. The advantage is in the cost savings. Meat traceability Product status at each stage of production can be recorded using blockchain. The records are permanent and inalterable. They also allow the tracing of each product to its source. Global retailer Walmart uses blockchain to track sales of pork meat in China. Its system lets the company see where each piece of meat comes from, its processing and storage, and sell-by date. In the event of product recall, the company can also see which batches are concerned and who bought them. Unilever, Nestle, Tyson and Dole also use blockchain for similar purposes. Diamond-giant De Beers uses blockchain technology to track stones from the point they are minded right up to the point when they are sold to consumers. This ensures the company avoids ‘conflict’ or ‘blood diamonds’ and assures the consumers that they are buying the genuine article.

Guruspeak Electric power micro grids Smart contracts are being used for redistributing excess power from solar panels. The Transactive Grid is an application running on blockchain to monitor and redistribute energy in a neighbourhood microgrid. The program automates the buying and selling of green energy to save costs and pollution. The technology for running the program is the Ethereum platform, designed for building smart contracts of any kind. RFID-driven contract bids and execution RFID tags for cartons or pallets store information on delivery location and date. Logistics partners run applications to look for these tags and bid for delivery contract. The partner offering optimal price and service gets the business. A smart contract then tracks status and final delivery performance. Cold chain monitoring Food and pharmaceutical products often need special storage. Also, enterprises also see the value in sharing warehouses and distribution centres, instead of each one paying for its own. Sensors on sensitive products can record temperature, humidity, vibration, and other items of interest. These readings can then be stored on blockchain. They are permanent and tamperproof. If a storage condition deviates from what has been agreed, each member of the blockchain will see it. A smart contract can trigger an action to correct the situation. Depending on the size of the deviation, this action may be to simply adjust the storage. However, it could also extend to changing “use-by” dates, declaring products unfit, or applying penalties. Blockchain and Internet of Things Other ambitious ideas come from using blockchain and IoT. One suggestion is for smart contracts to manage rentals of driverless cars. A smart contract could check for rental payments. If payment has not been made or simply at the end of the rental contract, the smart contract could lock the car and tell it to drive itself back to the renter. Maersk and IBM have created a blockchain-based electronic shipping system which will allow companies to track their cargo in real-time. It's expected to save the global shipping industry billions of dollars every year. TradeLens is an open and neutral industry platform underpinned by blockchain technology, supported by major industry players. The TradeLens ecosystem currently includes more than 20 port and terminal operators across the globe, including PSA Singapore, International Container Terminal Services Inc, Patrick Terminals, Modern Terminals in Hong Kong, Port of Halifax, Port of Rotterdam, Port of Bilbao, PortConnect, PortBase, and terminal operators Holt Logistics at the Port of Philadelphia, join the global APM Terminals' network in piloting the solution. This accounts for approximately 234 marine gateways worldwide that have or will be actively participating on TradeLens. The Big Four accounting firms, IBM and JP Morgan have been driving uptake by investigating applications. The Journey of “Pakhi”

I always dreamt that one-day i will be running an enterprise of my own! I have been brought up in a traditional business family of Kolkata and hence I guess, it was somewhere always there at the back of my mind. As a child, though in a joint family, I was a very quiet person. I loved to spend time by myself, engaging in art and craft; always loved to draw a lot. I was far away from being studious, but once I completed my graduation, my mom insisted on doing masters. On the other hand, I was very keen to do interior designing. Apart from being creative, I was also very fashion conscious as a child. I was also very enchanted with the traditional and antique furniture in our ancestral house. So parallel to my masters, I completed my Diploma in Interior Designing and then started working with a boutique design ﬁrm. I got married in 2004 and moved to Bangalore and started working as a Design Consultant with Portico, the home furnishing brand. I used to go to the Portico showroom everyday and used to dream of having my own creations on display. Once I was on the family way, I quit my job and to quench my thirst for doing something creative, started doing oil paintings for my new flat in Kolkata. Also, from our extensive travel both within and outside India, managed to collect a lot of interesting décor items from different places. My friends started appreciating my collections. They also sought suggestions on both their wardrobe and home décor. Many of them encouraged me to start something of my own and that is how "Pakhi" happened in 2014….and the journey began! To begin with, I focused on home decor and home-furnishing, as people seemed to be looking for choices in this space. I was also keen to help and promote the artisans from the interior villages of West Bengal. So I started with our age old traditional kantha embroidery. I started designing and sourcing kantha embroidered baby kanthas, quilts, bedcovers, cushion covers, pillow covers, table runners, kid’s-room curtains etc. I started drawing motifs sitting in Bangalore and then sending them to select artisans to produce the desired item. There is a huge storehouse of talent in the villages of Bengal. Their intricate hand work with an earthy feel is spellbinding. If you can add creativity in design to their skill, absolute magic unfolds. I also started drawing on vases, lampshades to create signature pieces. I created coaster sets by drawing my designs and then getting expert embroiders work on them. I also started experimenting by mixing kantha with Sambalpuri and Ikkat weaves to make bedspreads with a contemporary feel. The journey has been very exciting so far! One of our big moments came in 2016, when, to our complete surprise, Economic Times, Bangalore recommended our Diwali Exhibition to be one of the events to go to, in the City section. We do a lot of exhibition from our home and our friends’ homes to be able to contextualize the display. Pakhi over time has also managed to develop a good following on FB; many of the followers are overseas residents . Thanks to our presence on FB, we have now been shipping all over India. One of the most fulﬁlling moments for us is when a recipient shares his or her joy on receiving a product which they like so much. We are planning to extend our range by leveraging the traditional textile and craftwork of the other states of India. There is much larger awareness today, of the need to sustain the traditional art forms and hence it is an exciting time to be in this space. There is a lot we can achieve by making our creativity work in close collaboration with the talented artisans of our villages.

"Marketing in a Digital Age" January 5th - 7th, 2018 S.P. Mandali’s Prin. L. N. Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research (WeSchool) Bengaluru Campus hosted the 6th AIM - AMA Sheth Foundation Doctoral Consortium on the theme “Marketing in a Digital Age” from 5th to 7th of January, 2018. The three-day Doctoral Consortium commenced on 5th of January with a welcome note by Dr. V. Kumar, the Co-Founder of Academy of Indian Marketing and also the Executive Director of the Center for Excellence in Brand & Customer Management at the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, US. This was followed by Dr. Jagdish N. Sheth, a Senior Professor at Emory University and a cult figure in the field of Marketing Management, sharing the history of Consortium to the audience. WeSchool Group Director Dr. Uday Salunkhe then set the tone for the coming three days in his welcome address. The field of marketing has well past the brick-and-mortar system now and vying for customers’ mindshare through the virtual world. In such a volatile business environment, what could be the right marketing strategy for the firms in future? The Chief Guest for the event Dr. Anil Menon, President of CISCO, enlightened the audience by sharing his valuable insights. The first session of the day was on “Conceptual and Methodological Issues in Empirical Research by Dr. Amalesh Sharma of Texas A&M University, followed by a teaching simulation by Dr. Ernest Cadotte of University of Tennessee. Post lunch, there was a plenary session on “The Tradecraft of Publishing” where the eminent National and International faculties shared their advice and experience on the essentials of publishing an article/ research paper with renowned publishing houses. This was followed by sessions on “Role of University Research Centers in Generating Scholarly Research” and “Bridging Research Perspectives”. The evening was fun-filled with the local troop performing Yakshagana and fire side chat with Mrs. Rohini Nilekani, an Indian entrepreneur and politician.

Event | Doctoral Consortium 2018

Day -2, 6th of January started with reflections of the inaugural day and continued with the topic of “Bridging Research Perspectives”. Post lunch there was “Speed Dating”- a mentor mentee interactive session where the research scholars discussed their research topics and received feedback from the distinguished faculties. In the evening, all the participants enjoyed a cultural event at The Lemon Tree hotel. On day 3- 7th of January, there was a plenary session on “Linking Academic Research to Business Practice” followed by an insight on “Research and Teaching Development”. The consortium concluded with closing remarks from the co-chairs Dr. Jagdish N. Sheth, Dr. V. Kumar and Dr. Uday Salunkhe. The Doctoral Consortium was attended by 36 faculty mentors (21 International, 15 national) and 48 participants (17 International and 31 national) from renowned universities across the globe such as Yale University – US, University of Munich- Germany, Florida Atlantic UniversityUS, University of Leeds-UK, Curtin Business School-Australia etc. (list of faculty and scholars are given in Appendix I). Some of the research scholars such as Hulya Karaman, Ayan Ghosh Dastidar, Rumela Sengupta, Kaushik Jayaram were sponsored candidates.

The consortium was followed by the International Research Conference on the theme - “Marketing in the Next Decade” on 8th of January, 2018. The conference was attended by 56 participants, 8 corporate speakers and 30 industry guests and academicians. It was started with a vigour with key note address by Mr. Sharad Sharma, Founder, iSpirit, followed by a CMO roundtable on conference theme. Then the academicians shred their views on “Marketing Research in Digital Age”. In the afternoon session 56 participants presented their research paper/ case studies/ practicing papers in 6 tracks. The valedictory session had Ms. Bina Patil, VP-Human Resources - Indegene Lifesystems Pvt. Ltd. as the Chief Guest. The best presenters were awarded with Rs. 30,000 prize money by WeSchool Group Director Dr. Uday Salunkhe. Mr. Alexander Witmaier from University of Munich- Germany received the best paper award while Dr. A. Satya Nandini, from BMS College of Engineering, India received best presenter award for case studies. WeSchool management thanked all the corporate guests, academicians and research scholars for their enthusiastic participation and constructive inputs – inspiring learning by interaction for all.

“ Future of Fintech ” was an event organised by “ Arthakul – The Finance club ” of Welingkar institute of management, Bengaluru on 10 August, 2018. The event was held in the presence of some great industry peoples coming from different verticals of finance i.e. Venture Capitals, Risk Consultants and Some Start-ups too. The event was started with a brief presentation on evolution of Fintech industry followed by discussing the main aspects & problems faced by the Fintech industry by the panellists. Fintech, a combination of technology along with financial services have helped to manage the traditional business of finance in a very efficient manner with the help of new softwares, applications and business models. Fintech model is majorly adopted by some of the sectors being Insurance Companies, Mobile Banking & Payment, Loans & Borrowings and financial Planning & Investments. The evolution of Fintech started with first Barclay’s ATM followed by Electronic Stock Exchange to Online Banking and now it has reached to Robotics & Algo-Trading. 2008 Financial Crisis proved to be a major boom to the Fintech industry due to regulatory changes in Financial Laws and boom of technology became a positive factor for new start-ups to enter into this industry. In India the pace of growth of Fintech sector was good until November 2016 when Demonetisation happened. However the after effects of demonetisation leading to a cashless economy have again created great opportunities for Fintech industry. India is on the 2nd position in adopting Fintech services all over the globe with China being on the Top. As every booming industry faces some kind of hurdles, the Fintech industry too has got some issues relating to security and data privacy. Therefore financial services regulation in aspect to Fintech is crucial for the growth of Fintech Industries. Some major topics discussed during the event were: 1. Will Fintech disrupt the banking sector ? a. Growing NBFC’s is an example to disruption of traditional banking sector. NBFC using Fintech services prove to be more efficient in their working with less loan defaulters. Convenience to customer by making banking process much shorter and more effective has led to the growth of NBFC. For Example, in a NBFC, loans are being given within a fraction of minutes as compared to weeks or months taken by traditional banks. Opening & Handling of accounts are much faster in NBFC than signing set of forms in banks and taking days to open. 2. What could be the Future of Fintech in the Coming years ? Any Recommendations for finance Graduates ? a. Fintech has a huge potential in the coming years as most of the sectors are moving towards digitalisation and paperless work. For Finance Graduates to be in this field they would need some understanding of finance along with some basic skills in technology. Keeping a track of major events occurring in finance like cryptocurrencies along with technological changes can be an edge over others for them. 3. If all transactions, agency and management fees were slashed to zero, where would the company’s revenue come from ? a. The revenue would come from the customer itself, a quite simple answer given by one of the panellist. It went along with a good saying that, “ If the product is free, than the Product is You ”. Finally the event ended with brief set of knowledge regarding the Fintech industry and a vote of thanks by Dr.Hema ( Finance Faculty ) for the panellist for investing their time & sharing their skills with the students of Welingkar Institute of Management.

In this pursuit, every year WeSchool organizes “Summer Internship Contest” for our Post Graduate Management Students (from all specializations) to develop excellence and competitive spirit among the students. This year, it was held on 22 August.

WeSchool in Association with Infosys Ltd. hosted the 30th AIMS Annual Management Education Convention 2018 from 30th August to 1st September’18 at the Infosys Convention Centre, Bangalore. The Theme of this year’s AIMS Convention was “Management Education : Connecting the Dots”.

All the delegates and the participants were welcomed to the Convention by the AIMS President - Dr. Anil Rao Paila- Senior Dean & Director, WeSchool Bangalore. The AIMS Convention also provided an avenue for institutions, faculty, researchers and students to participate in numerous competitions and showcase their contributions to Management Education in various capacities. One of the highpoints of these competitions was the AIM-AIMS Conscious Capitalism Simulation Competition, that saw more than 30 competitors battle it out over a 4 -day period at SIBM, Bangalore Campus. This year’s AIMS Convention also enriched the participant’s artistic temperaments through various cultural programs. The ﬁrst day saw performances by 50 member Infosys cultural troupe ‘Parichaya’ and blended by performances of students of various B-schools. On the second day Dollu-Kunitha (Karnataka’s drum based dance) performance was the highlight of the evening held in WeSchool campus.

The 3-day 30th AIMS Annual Management Education Convention 2018 came to a close with the incumbent AIMS President Dr. Rattan Sharma - Principal Director, Delhi School of Business, who spoke about way forward of AIMS. VOLTAS CHANNEL PARTNER MEET, 2018, SINGAPORE & USA As a Channel Partner of the VOLTAS - Unitary Products Business Group, I had an opportunity to attend a channel partner meet cum award distribution in February 2018 in SINGAPORE. VOLTAS Limited is the market leader in Air Conditioner Segment in India, with the market share of about 29%. There I got a chance to interact with all the top ofﬁcials of VOLTAS and understand how they are actually established in market. Specially, words of Mr. Pradeep Bakshi (MD, VOLTAS) were very inspiring for me. I learnt about the growing consumption pattern of the Consumer Durables in INDIA. And also happen to attend the launch of 4 new SKUs of VOLTAS Beko with many more to come soon, which will be a complete new range of refrigerators and washing machines, which shall be rolled out in the Indian market very soon. Also, by speaking to some other Business Heads of the company I could get very useful insights on how the company arrives at a decision to launch a new product, what all research is involved behind this decision, etc. The interaction I could have with the ofﬁcials gave me a lot of learning about the real-life scenario of the business in the consumer durables sector. The experience on this trip was a good exposure for me. I tried to relate some concepts that I have been taught in the lectures by my professors and actually visualize the practical applications of all, that added more to my existing knowledge. Attending this kind of meetings are a wonderful opportunity to open mind, interact and share knowledge and experiences with one another. I look forward to attend these kinds of meetings. Celebration | Family Day 1 - 2 February 2018

This year, WeSchool celebrated “Family Day” at its Mumbai campus on 1 & 2 February. The family members of all WeSchool employees were gladly invited to this gala event where the participants enjoyed different sports and cultural programme. The Bengaluru team started on 31 January for Mumbai in a sleeper coach bus. The fun and frolic began right from there. In Mumbai, all had a nice time while participating in Cricket, Tug of War and cultural program. The Bengaluru team showcased talents in music and Bollywood and regional dance. In between, almost everyone happily enjoyed sightseeing and shopping while roaming around the city. Some of the family members of Bengaluru team has shared their experience here.

My mom’s office conducted Family Day in the month of February. I had some good and exciting experiences. On the first day we had a Cricket match of Bangalore campus vs Mumbai campus. At first there was a group photo and then the match started. We children cheered the parents and enjoyed unlimited lemonade. Then, after the sports events, I went to Chowpatty beach with my mom and her friends. Next day, there was cultural programme in the evening. We all enjoyed watching dances, hearing songs and listening to a few precious words from the Chief Guest. Towards the end of the program, prizes were distributed to the winners of the sports events. Then we enjoyed a lavish dinner. It was a well-organized event and overall a nice experience.

Puff….was my first reaction after my dance. Okay, don’t get confused which dance…lets start from the beginning. It was a Thursday and in the morning we reached WeSchool (My mother’s office) – the institute had booked a sleeper bus for our journey from Bangalore to Mumbai – that’s where the head office of WeSchool is. Me and my mother got a double bed in the upper berth. In bus, we all had a lot of fun. We were singing and even playing. Finally, we reached Mumbai on Friday morning. We went to the hotel to freshen up and after that we travelled all day. Next day was the cultural programme, when I performed. My mother also participated in dance with her colleagues. We went to the dressing room to change costume. My no was 7 and my mother’s no was 8. I was worried that we might be late for the dance. But luckily we managed to complete when the 3rd performance was going on. When I was performing I did missed out some steps but kept dancing with a smile and confidence. So, I suppose, no one could notice. I know one thing for sure, and that is that this was the Best Family Day.

Celebration | Family Day 1 - 2 February 2018

Celebrating family day shows that Welingkar Institute encourage a healthy work life balance and support employees. It was a fun filled trip, could get a chance to interact with other families. Even all the seniors especially our Chairmen Adv. S.K Jain, Dr. Uday Salunkhe, Group Director, WeSchool and Dr. Anil Rao Paila, Sr. Dean & Director, WeSchool Bengaluru, made us to feel the support we provide indirectly for WeSchool progress. The family day was well organised including travelling, food, cultural programs - especially kids program. Sanjit Kumar, My son could get chance to perform in front of large audience for the first time which unplanted great confidence in him. Over all we have enjoyed a lot and looking forward for the next family day.

I enjoyed lot in WeSchool Mumbai by performing in stage, seeing dance and many others performances. I got so many friends, while travelling with other families. It was a very nice and comfortable Journey to Mumbai. I enjoyed my father’s funny dances with other colleagues. Thank you very much for taking us to the Mumbai trip for family day function.

It was a good experience overall. It was the ﬁrst time I visited some other state, outside Karnataka. I could see the different lifestyle and culture of people there. I am glad to share my opinion about Family Day. It was a great experience and each and every family mingled nicely. The ﬁrst day morning sports was their - Tug of War and Cricket. That time all Mumbai and Bengaluru Sir’s and ma’ams encouraged us to participate and we took group photo. In between, we went to visit Mount Mary Church, India Gate and Mumbai city around. We had nice time with family. I thank to management team of WeSchool to conduct this trip and Family Day Programme. Once again thanks to Bengaluru and Mumbai team...

Independence day

The 72nd Independence day was celebrated with much zeal and fervour at WeSchool Bengaluru. This year, the theme was “UMANG” (gusto). The celebration was dedicated to the undaunted spirit of the Indian Armed Forces. The Chief Guest of the day was Ms Rama, CEO ELCIA. In her address the Chief Guest emphasized on the need for citizen participation in the growth of the nation. Dr. Anil Rao Paila, Sr. Dean & Director, WeSchool Bengaluru, stressed on the importance of youth in nation building and working towards ensuring a progressive nation. Dr. Madhavi Lokhade, Dean, WeSchool Bengaluru, highlighted the supreme sacriﬁces of the Armed Forces and emphasized the need to be responsible and disciplined cititzens. The cultural events included dance performance, skit and music performance from both junior and senior batch students. The skit portrayed the relinquishment of the armed forces and their families. The event was well organised by the cultural secretaries Ms. Radhika Saraf, Ms. Shreya Daga, Ms. Vridhi Bhutoria and Mr. Pulkit Sharma with guidance from Prof. Anita Pillai. The cultural events were hosted by Ms. Monika Srinivasan, Ms. Pratiksha Jichkar and Mr. Vinay Tahalramani.

WeSchool Bengaluru provides its students with every possible opportunity to learn the art of leadership & team management – often by the means of outdoor activities such as Joga Bonito – the annual Football tournament. This year, Joga Bonito was held on September 9, 2018 at Sports Grounds, Electronic City Phase 1. Practice session was held for a week; wherein both the student and faculty were engaged in ﬁtness regime and the sessions gave them the ample time to rejuvenate their mind and soul to strategise their game plan. The Joga Bonito 2018 had participation from WeSchool faculty members, Staff, alumni and students. The football players congregated at the Sports Ground early in the morning wearing their team-Jersey which displayed their favourite number or nickname. Each team was determined to play with best foot forward and win. For the men’s – PGDM Seniors (2017-19 Batch) were the runners up and BD& I Seniors (2017-19 Batch) were the winners. For women’s Alumni won the ﬁnals against BD&I Juniors (2018-20 Batch).
