Saving the Planet When waste food is discarded in a landfill, it degrades as an anaerobic process (in the absence of oxygen). This decomposition produces methane (CH4) which is 72 times worse for the atmosphere in the short term than carbon dioxide (CO2). The effect of this on global warming is huge, because the largest part of garbage sent to landfills in the US is waste food. Further, the decomposition smells and can cause health problems. Discarding 100 kg (220 lb) of waste food per day causes the equivalent of 153 ton of CO2 per year to be sent to the atmosphere. The decomposition inside the LFC is an aerobic process (in the presence of oxygen). This produces CO2 and water in a natural manner that is accelerated in the machine. This natural process is carbon neutral because the carbon was taken from the atmosphere to produce the food in the first place. The Food Waste Decomposer uses minimal electricity that causes (for the OK- 100) the production of about 1.2 ton of CO2 per year.

How it works

The Food Waste Decomposer uses a series of processes in which microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the presence of oxygen. The environment of the Food Waste Decomposer with our special mixture of microbes and enzymes accelerates the digestion of most food products within 24 hours. The output is compost that is environmentally safe. You can use it to enrich your landscape. The Food Waste Decomposer is a practical alternative to the traditional disposal of waste food. Anything you can eat, including fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, bread, rice, and noodles can go into the Food Waste Decomposer . The machine can compost both raw and cooked foods. The process is totally green because it uses no chemicals. As one of earths’ oldest processes, composting is the most effective means of stabilizing and converting biodegradable waste. The waste food is not being chopped but it is decomposed to such a degree that 80 to 85% of food waste is decomposed. The rich by-product is therefore safe and replenishes nature.

Frequent Asked Questions How safe is the compost produced by the machine? Our machines were tested by A&L Canada Lab and in their study they concluded that good hygiene material is obtained from our composting machines. Test reports next slide

What happens to the food waste in the Food Waste Decomposer, and how long does it take to compost? The process reduces the volume of waste by 95% by evaporating water and discharging carbon dioxide gas. The remaining 5% is turned into compost. It takes from 12 to 24 hours for food waste to be composted. How do I optimize the performance of the composter? The composter performs best when different food waste types are mixed together. It performs less well on food waste of a single type such as only vegetable waste, or only bread and past ry waste. How does composting cooked food waste compare with composting raw waste? Typically, the composting machine processes cooked food much faster in 10 to 12 hours to complete the cycle. The cycle time will be longer for raw food waste such as eggshell, meat, poultry, fish, seafood shell and bones. The rule of thumb is the more raw contents you have in the food waste the longer the cycle takes to compost, especially if the raw contents are red and poultry meats. It can compost any food waste from kitchen. The compost derived from food waste with both raw and cooked contents is highly recommen ded for use as fertilizer.

How should the compost be used? After removing the compost from the unit, allow it to sit for a period of 23 weeks before using it as fertilizer. The recommended ratio for application is to mix ten parts of soil to one part of compost fertilizer. What happens if non compostable items are put into the composter? If non compostable material such as plastics, metals, construction wastes is accidental put into the machine, it will not do any harm to the machine nor the compost. Just make sure to separate these items before use it for fertilizer. What are the “other waste materials that should not be put into the composter? Plastics, metals, construction waste, textiles and wood in the form of toothpicks or chopsticks.

The tests reports from A&L lab; they reference a significant weight reduction, which Is going to be mostly water. That is expected. What I would like to see is the AMOUNT of organic matter (that is the fuel that makes compost heat in a pile) that goes in and the AMOUNT that comes out. NOT percent, but quantity: The machine does provide a significant weight reduction, at 90- 95 % as estimated by these calculations: For every 100 kgs of waste, with 60 percent water that means 40 kgs of dry material. The organic matter content of the dry material is 87 percent; that means that there are 34.8 kgs of organic matter in, plus 5.2 kgs of inorganic matter. At the end of the process, there is around 8 kgs of dry material remaining, comprising of 2.8 kgs of organic matter and the original 5.2 kgs of inorganic matter. In summary, of the 34.8kgs of organics in, we have 2.8 kgs of organics out, which is equivalent to a 92% decomposition rate. Most paper or plastics (which make up the bags, containers) are not decomposable within a short time, so we group them into inorganic matter. In addition, there are the minerals such as phosphorous, magnesium, calcium, Potassium, sodium etc., which are again not bio-decomposable. This is in fact one reason why your compost has so much sodium, because after the volume re duction, the original sodium are all there still, and so the concentration which is mass/volume, becomes extremely high.
