Someone made a donation to make your Pratt experience possible It’s true. And it’s a fact that most don’t think about when they sign up for a class or access one of our studios. Each and every Pratt experience is made possible by the kindness of a stranger. We are passionately committed to our mission of making art accessible to everyone and we know that affordability is a key factor in our efforts. So we raise money. Year after year, we work tirelessly to secure enough funding to support thousands and thousands of Pratt experiences. Some support comes from grants and government sources, but most of it comes from generous individual donors who share our passion for art-making. These contributions allow us to apply a deep subsidy to class and studio fees. You may have noticed that Pratt is growing fast. Classes are filling up rapidly and demand for our programs is as high as ever. In order to meet this demand and keep our prices low, we need to raise more money. And we could use your help. Are you willing to share the experience? Would you pay it forward to make sure every person has access to the powerful experience of making art? Our goal is to raise $100,000 before the end of the year. Will you help us reach our goal and make a donation today? Thank you in advance for your support and Happy Holidays! Cheers,
Steve Galatro Executive Director

INTERVIEW WITH
A R T I S T
Charlie Culler is a retired teacher who rented space in Pratt’s Wood Studio for the months of September and October. He is making an entire set of furniture and accessories for his home. His work will soon be featured on the Northwest Woodworkers Association website at www.nwwoodworkers.org.
@PM: Where did you
learn to make furniture and wood art? CC: I grew up in South
Carolina, and I studied two years of industrial arts in high school. I’ve always been interested in wood— toys, trains and furniture. I moved to Boston and received my music degree there. In 1965, as a musician, I became a music teacher. I started getting
into audio electronics, and I needed speaker boxes. I made the speakers, and then I needed end tables to match, so I made those too. I’m self-taught. I retired in 2007 and moved to my present home. I finally had time to make more furniture, and my apartment looked a bit bare, so I started doing woodworking full time. Now I’m making all my own furniture.

P R A T T
@PM: What inspired you
to come to Pratt and rent space in the wood studio? CC: I was at another studio
before, and it became too expensive there. One of the employees at Rockler Woodworking recommended Pratt, so I came here. Pratt has great prices, and I’m renting studio space for the whole months of September and October. I live close by and I don’t have a car, so I travel by Metro bus. I bring things back and forth from home to the studio here. @PM: You’re working
on several different projects. Can you tell me about them?
CC: I’m working on a mirror
for a dresser, and a chevel mirror that will go in a swivel stand. I’m also making a computer center that will have a drop leaf desk and cabinet doors. I’m outfitting my entire apartment with my own furniture. @PM: What has been
your favorite project?
CC: It’s hard to decide! I
made a futon sofa out of bubinga with veneers of curly and birdseye maple. This piece will be featured on the Northwest Woodworkers Association website soon. I’m going to take some pictures of the other pieces I’ve made and put them up on their website.
@PM: Do you have a
favorite kind of wood to work with?
CC: I really like bubinga,
curly maple, and birdseye maple for the living room. For the dining room, I like cherry and jatoba, which is Brazillian cherry. I also like padauk.

@PM: My grandfather loved
to work with wood. He had a small workshop in his basement where he made picture frames and furniture. What do you enjoy about being in the studio?
CC: I’ve had my own space
like that from time to time. It’s great to have a place

GIVE TO THE ANNUAL FUND Pratt is on fire! Why? Because we’ve just been presented with Seattle Met maga-
zine’s Light a Fire award for Nurturing Creativity. And the Puget Sound Business Journal recently recognized Pratt for emergent vision and leadership. We are serving more creative minds than ever and we need your help to meet this growing demand! Whether you’re a student, parent of a student, or studio artist, you have benefitted from the generosity of a stranger; someone gave a donation that made your Pratt experience possible. Now you have the opportunity to share the experience and pay it forward. Your gift to Pratt’s annual fund keeps our programs as affordable as possible and our studios running smoothly. Your contribution also ensures Pratt can continue to present free public events like artist lectures and demonstrations, offer free weekend classes for neighborhood youth, and provide greater access through our tuition assistance program. Will you share the experience and make a gift today?
