CLASSES EVENTS LECTURES
@pratt magazine AUG-OCT 2015
It’s time to get loud. Lately, I’ve been attending a lot of meetings related to social issues. As leaders in the arts community, we are collectively questioning what our role ought to be in responding to deeply concerning current events and systemic social issues. It seems that every day the news is populated with new stories about systemic racism, income inequality, gentrification, and other disparities. In times of great change, artists have historically played a major role, giving voice and perspective to key social issues. And so I’ve been asking myself, what responsibility do we have at Pratt, an organization with a huge community of artists and a namesake who fought tirelessly for civil rights? I’ve heard arts organizations referred to as culture makers. But I think we’re more like culture amplifiers. We give artists the resources they need to express themselves and we provide a giant megaphone to amplify their voices. We need those voices more than ever. Artists, it’s time to get loud. I challenge you to use your art as a platform to reflect on these issues. Apply what you’re learning in our studios to work that is culturally responsive. Help us see change through your eyes. I want to help. Email me at getloud@pratt.org. Tell me how your work is responding to a social issue and show me your images. I will gladly do my best to amplify. Cheers,
Steve Galatro Executive Director

Master Artist Ken Parker: The Unexpected Image Irish Master Printmaker Ken Parker returns to Pratt to teach his unique collograph workshop: The Unexpected Image. A collograph is essentially a collage that is inked both by wiping and by rolling. This creative technique leaves room for lots of experimentation, and pushes the definition of a print. During this four day workshop we will cover ideas for the images, how to make the plate, the inking, and the printing, hopefully breaking rules along the way to create a collection of work to enhance any portfolio. All this and with Ken's great communication skills, not to mention Irish charm, magic is sure to happen! PREREQUISITE: Basic printmaking experience. SUPPLY FEE: $35. INTERVIEW WITH
James Ellingboe BY HEATHER OLSON
James Ellingboe is an emerging artist with extensive experience in giving form to the built environment. Recently he has committed himself solely to artistic expression through sculpture. His sculptural works are primarily direct in nature and are often abstract manifestations inspired by math, science, and his life experience with the natural world. He often looks to the human body at the cellular and molecular level as an artistic muse. Currently his work is of two veins, the first of which examines opposing elements, namely the interplay between positive and negative space, and light and shadow. The second vein is realized as biomimetic assemblages of eviscerated, inanimate, industrial materials… a sort of re–evolution.
Tribalisk

In all of his works, James seeks to imbue the philosophy of Christopher Alexander’s “Phenomenon of Life” which he was introduced to as an undergraduate. James also hopes that through his sculpture he is able to pique the viewer’s environmental interest and curiosity in what he feels is becoming an increasingly homogenous and lifeless built environment. James is a firm believer in the artists as masters of their medium and thus fabricates his own work in the studios of Pratt Fine Arts Center. He produces highly crafted objects, reflecting what he refers to as the “art of the hand”, and being a life–learner, he is constantly seeking new ways to manipulate materials in order to give form to his ideas. He considers himself to be both self–taught in the discipline of sculpture, and educated by the fellow artists he works and studies with at Pratt Fine Arts Center.

P R A T T @PM: When did you first become inspired to make art? JE: I’ve been building things since I was a kid. I like giving form to things, and that inspired me to try creating new works. I started out being very interested in science and the natural world, all through high school and college, and then I diverged away from that into making things. That led to an undergraduate degree in interior architecture and furniture design, and teaching woodworking at the University of Oregon for five years. I’ve made furniture for years and moved back into the natural world to do landscape design as well. I learned to weld when I was a teenager, and then started getting into more metals in the outdoors. I am technically an emerging artist. I’ve only thrown myself into it full–time for about two years, but I’ve been designing and giving form to interior and outdoor environments for over 30 years. I bring that all with me and it goes into my art. I started out doing small “sculptures” as a kid, and then furniture, which was very sculptural, and now I’ve gone full circle to creating objects again. I love working with metal, but I still also work in wood. I’d like to do wood and metal together, which is difficult because they can’t really share the same fabrication environment. I’ve done some stone and would like

to do more, but right now I want to stay focused on metal in order to keep increasing my skill level. My whole life experience is poured into what I do now. In my work, I like to play with scale, with light and shadow, and with positive and negative space.
like bronze but it’s very expensive—about nine times more expensive than steel. @PM: Describe your dream project. JE: I have several pieces that I’ve made in maquette and then scaled up to larger sizes. I’d like to make something that is

too big for me to do on my own. I have a lot of experience working with teams and I think it would be great to do something beyond my capacity where I’d have to have a lot of people help with it. That would be neat. My ultimate dream project would be to have ongoing commissioned work.
do you like to work with? JE: I am too impatient to do indirect sculpture, such as cast bronze, so I make direct metal sculpture. I fabricate and build things. I do a lot of forged work and I like to mix forging and fabrication. I mainly work with steel, both mild and Cor–ten, and have done some stainless steel, but I don’t like finishing it since it’s harder to work with. I

P R A T T
@PM: If you made
something monumental, where would it be? JE: Here in Seattle, but I’d be happy to have something monumental pretty much anywhere in the world. I think campuses are great venues for larger works, so I’d like to have something on a campus. I’ve always had the idea that some of the outdoor spaces I’ve designed could be a spots to house a large piece of sculpture. @PM: You are influenced by the natural and built environments. What are your thoughts on the rapid changes taking place in Seattle, all the new construction, and the impact that has on the community? JE: My greatest concern is with the rapidity of wholesale change within parts of the city. Most successful urban fabrics are often
Receptor

(continued from page 18)
accretions of change that have happened over a period of time resulting in a mosaic of scales, styles, uses, and materials…all elements that are attributed to giving a built environment a sort of “soul”. When change occurs too rapidly, some of these elements can slip through the cracks. With all that is happening in Seattle, I see an even greater need for art in the public realm to help humanize peoples’ experience. I’m a digital immigrant, having learned my design skills by hand rather than on a computer, so I have a considerable attachment to what I refer to as the “art of the hand”. This carries through to my sculpture and is hopefully recognized by those who view it. I have had conversations with Todd Jannausch over in Pratt’s
wood studio about hand– made versus 3D printed sculpture, and I think that given an even playing field, people will always prefer a hand made object over something the has been spit out of a 3D printer. I think that the more “art of the hand” that we can pepper the built environment with, the better. @PM: What do you enjoy about working on projects at Pratt? JE: I enjoy working in a studio environment that is also a learning environment. When I was at University of Oregon I taught and worked at the Erb Memorial Union Craft Center for five years. I like being in a place where you can learn from others. There are people here that will show you things, and you can show them things. Pratt is also an incredibly affordable resource for someone trying to get into the arts world. The sculpture studio provides ample room to work in and access to the larger tools that an emerging artist would have a hard time affording. The only down side is that I have to haul all my stuff in and out of the studio daily, but I’ve become very good at that. I can move a lot of weight in a very short time. When I first started I was making smaller work. Now I often move in 400–500 pounds

P R A T T of materials and tools, which I can load in and start working on in about 15 minutes. I’m currently working on two pieces weighing 200lbs and 350lbs so I have to plan ahead in order not over handle my materials. I produce maquettes for everything I build which helps me choreograph fabrication before I set foot in the studio. I know that may not sound very artistic, but time is money, and the daily studio regime keeps me efficient, which I like. @PM: Where can we see your work? JE: Some of it is currently in my garage and on my patio. I had two pieces that were at the Allison Inn and Spa’s 2nd Annual Outdoor Sculpture Invitational in Newberg, OR, but they have recently been moved along with a third new work up to Matzke Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park on Camano Island. I also have a sculpture in Lake Oswego, OR for the Arts Council of Lake Oswego’s Gallery without Walls outdoor sculpture exhibit. Currently, I am fabricating two new works that will more than likely be submitted for the Gallery Without Walls call this November. I’m not formally represented by a gallery right now, but would like to gain representation at some point in the near future.

Twist @PM: Are you interested in teaching? JE: Eventually. I really enjoy teaching and would like to work it into my schedule at some point. I feel that the best way to truly learn something is to have to pass that knowledge on to someone else. @PM: What advice would you give a new student who wants to make art? JE: If you are not already in art school, and even if you are, check out Pratt! It is an amazing resource for getting your feet wet and exploring your talents. Also, have a second set of skills that pays the bills and keeps you going while you are learning. I know that sounds awfully practical, but I’ve been doing
this for two years and haven’t sold anything yet, so I continue to consult on landscape and urban design. I’m also fortunate to have a very supporting spouse who encourages me to pursue my passion. My long–term goal is to make art a profession. This is the next phase of my life and I’ll keep doing it until I’m no longer physically able. I’ve been building a body of work for my portfolio which I can now show people to perhaps obtain commissions. If you are your own sole support, try to do something that hopefully pays reasonably well, and that will not deplete any artistic energies that you need for your own work.
