CLASSES EVENTS LECTURES
@pratt magazine DEC 2015-FEB 2016
Have you ever felt like a passenger in your own journey? Like somehow you've succumbed to the mundane routine of life and forgotten to make room for the things that make it all worthwhile? I think we've all been there at some point. I know I have! That's why I love the concept of New Year’s Day. Sure, it's just another day, really. But it's also an opportunity to reflect on the past and commit to new choices in the future. What went well this past year? Where did I fall short? Am I fulfilled? What might I do differently in the year to come? These are the kinds of questions we ask ourselves. And as the clock strikes midnight, we inevitably resolve, one way or another, to be better or feel better in some way. I think this ongoing quest for betterment is one of the most beautiful qualities of the human existence. We may not always live up to our ever-reaching expectations, but dammit, we will always try. I hope you will choose creativity in your quest for betterment in this New Year. And there are hundreds of ways you can achieve that at Pratt (see all pages of this magazine). But whatever you choose (and however long it lasts), I wish you much success!
Cheers,
Steve Galatro Executive Director

INTERVIEW WITH
BenMoreau BY HEATHER OLSON
“
For over a decade I was primarily concerned with self-portraiture as a vehicle not only for personal reflection, but as an exploration into the human condition. I draw upon television, film, comic books and heavy metal music as aggregate elements that convey the loneliness of the individual amidst existential dilemmas. This allows for an intimate, uncomfortable and at times confrontational experience with the viewer. The self-portrait is symbolic of the daily internal struggles that afflict everyone. Fear and anxiety are projected into the work as I attempt to reconcile my existence with inevitability.

@PM: When did you
start making art?
BM: I’ve always drawn ever
since I was a small child. I really enjoyed drawing and coloring. I’ve been doing it my whole life. When I was a kid it kept my brother and I busy and quiet, so my parents were always pretty supportive. @PM: When did you
know you wanted to become an artist?
BM: Probably early in
high school, during my freshman year. I never stopped drawing or making art, but my mom was sure I would become a lawyer because I used to argue with her all the time. When I was 14 I found out there were art schools, and art colleges, and I was sure it was what I wanted to do. There was never really any other option.

dream project?
BM: I think knowing that
I could get a paycheck from sitting in a corner and drawing would be great. I don’t have grand aspirations. I don’t need to make monuments to myself. I want to do the work I want to do, and make sure my child has food on his plate and diapers on his butt. (continued on page 27)

@PM: From where do
you draw inspiration?

I hear people say they go to museums and they come away inspired. I don’t think I ever do. There are things that I like, and things that get me interested or excited, but there’s something weird about the word inspi-

@PM: What do you enjoy
about teaching at Pratt? BM: I like the variety of
people and perspectives that come through Pratt’s doors. I’m always surprised by the students in my class—students straight BM: That’s such an old out of college and those body of work; I’m not sure that have not made any art what I was trying to say in 20 years, or someone with those! I had to make who has just retired. There about 60 of those before is a huge range and I’m alI found five that I liked. I ways interested in that. It’s wanted to put the messaga challenge to make the es out there and see how class good for everyone. I people responded to them. want the classes to be best possible for each student— I’m just here to help them get the most out of the experience. In printmaking there is always pressure to “get it right” and I don’t want people to feel that pressure. You’re in the door—you choose how you want to spend the time. Take the weight off your shoulders and just work. your word balloons and the messages you wanted to convey with those.
@PM: Who were some
of the teachers that you most enjoyed working with? BM: I had a drawing in-
structor as an undergrad, Honor Mack, who helped me to trust my instincts more. That helped me open up and see that not everything had to be done in a straight line. Peter Suchecki and Carole Kim were also very helpful instructors and gave me great experiences working in a print shop. Seeing how they operated as both edFontanelle

ucators and participants in that space was really helpful. It can go really well if everyone takes ownership of that space. If everyone feels like that’s their space it works really well. @PM: Your dog drawings
depict animals wearing gloves, like the old Mickey Mouse cartoons. Can you tell me about the stories behind these drawings? BM: Those were based on
a dog I had growing up. The dog was a rescue and had been severely abused, so there was a kind of pathos to the drawings and I didn’t want them to be too realistic and heavy. We’ve all seen the early cartoons, the work of Tex Avery and the surreal aspects of aniLEARN MORE
mation. I wanted to have that kind of drawing. @PM: I really like your
Beta Male portraits. I’d like to know more about the ideas behind those. BM: You can see that I’m
pretty self-deprecating. I didn’t want to make myself the Alpha Male. I wanted to do a body of work and take into account what it meant to be the number two rather than the number one male. It seemed more appropriate. To call myself or the work Alpha Male would be ridiculous. Can you imagine? I don’t think people would believe it. Now I’m opening myself up to all kinds of vulnerabilities as a Beta Male.

It just feels more appropriate. If you google the term Beta Male, you get a bunch of Alpha Male stuff, like weightlifting and how to pick up women. Beta doesn’t have to bad. It’s just different. Being the Alpha Male seems like a lot of wasted energy. I don’t need to be the biggest voice in the room. @PM: Where can
we see your work? BM: Right now, on my
website. I was just in an exhibition at the Museum of Northwest Art over the summer. I’m represented by the Davidson Galleries here in Seattle and they have a lot of my work on file there.
