CLASSES EVENTS LECTURES
@pratt magazine APR-MAY 2015
Self-awareness is a gift best received. We recently engaged an outside firm to conduct some research for us. We wanted to see how we were doing, to learn more about what people think of us, and to better understand how our community affects people. The results from a series of anonymous surveys and one-on-one interviews were truly overwhelming so I thought I’d share some of the sound bites. Here’s what people are saying about Pratt: “It was love at first class.” “It brings a ton of value to our city.” “An art community where everyone is welcome.” “Wonderful teachers, well-equipped studios.” “The quality of instructors is superb.” “It's kept me out of the shrink's office.” “The focus is on the experience more than the outcome.”
“I love how it’s an arts community where we can share the joy of being creative.” “You can learn and try new things; you don’t feel judged.” “Being not for credit, but for the love of self-expression.” “I love the cross-pollination, and community outreach in an underserved community.” “It involves the community and thereby enriches the community, making it a better place for all.”
And the quotes go on and on. Hundreds of voices collectively endorsing our efforts with a tidal wave of positivity that I admit I had not fully anticipated. As the tide now recedes, I am left feeling proud and energized. And I am more motivated than ever to make sure that Pratt lives up to these wonderful sentiments. You should probably get in on the action. Best,
Steve Galatro Executive Director

Foundry, Forging and Fabrication Women in Metal: Foundry, Forging and Fabrication will kick off during Women’s History Month, this March 2015, in celebration of local female artists who have successfully navigated a traditionally male-dominated artistic discipline. The intention is to not only celebrate artists currently working professionally in metal, but to also create exciting and inviting opportunities for women to experience working in metal for the first time or to further their artistic practice.
In addition to the Women in Metal: A Conversation, Pratt is offering twelve metals classes this March through May taught exclusively by female instructors including two “ladies forging and welding nights.” By offering classes taught by professional female instructors Pratt aims to create an environment where women feel free to create and explore in the realms of foundry, forging and fabricating metal.

SOME EXAMPLES
Blacksmithing
Welding
Blacksmithing, also known as forging, is the process of shaping steel with heat and hand tools. Using basic tools and techniques that have been practiced by blacksmiths for centuries, you will hammer, twist and bend hot stainless steel into a variety of sculptural forms and functional objects.
Work together as a group to design and assemble either a stainless steel garden trellis, chair, or sculpture using the tools and techniques associated with the metal inert gas (MIG) welding process. An extraordinary and collaborative experience for corporate groups, consider incorporating a company logo or other custom design for an additional fee.
• Suitable for 6-15 people • Pricing begins at $575 *
• Suitable for 6-10 people • Pricing begins at $725 *

Carla Grahn
BY HEATHER OLSON
Carla Grahn is a Seattle-based artist who has been working with metal for over 20 years. She has been teaching Creative Metal Working and Welding One at Pratt for over 15 years. Although her work has incorporated more mixed media and installations over the last six years, she continues to work with metal, primarily steel, pushing its limits and exploring different techniques and expressions. She also has experience working small/soldering and casting copper, bronze and silver. The scale of her work is quite broad, as well as diverse aesthetically, ranging from very decorative to minimalist and industrial. See her work at carlagrahn.com

classes coming up that you’ll be teaching.
CG: I teach Creative Metal-
working and Introduction to Welding on a regular basis. This spring, Mark Rudis and I will be teaching a garden art class. @PM: Where can we
see your work?
CG: You can see it in
public places such as Horizon house, Youngstown Flats, Lexicon, Terra Plata, Marjorie, University of Washington Medical Center, Curtis Steiner, and CVG Gallery currently, and my website: www.carlagrahn.com @PM: What advice do you
have for people interested in pursuing metal arts? CG: If you are thinking
about it that means you should check it out. The Welding Nights are a great way to get a taste of it, and so are any of the intro classes at Pratt that are offered regularly and are modestly priced and well timed for the wealth of information one gets. I think it’s a no-lose situation. You will either fall in love with it and have a new career, discover a great hobby, add a valuable skill to your repertoire, or make something that you are really proud of. If you find that you hate it, you can scratch it off the list and move on.
