Yoga for Your Hands? The Pratt team recently had some interesting discussions about the benefits of making art. Among lots of different insights, one person described a benefit as being “like yoga for your hands.” On the surface, there are obvious physical similarities in terms of flexing, stretching and dexterity in the actual hands. But I think the correlation goes far deeper than that…
The psychological benefits of
Yoga:
Making Art:
• Improved psychological/ mental well-being
• Improved well–being; increased positive emotions
• Reduced anxiety and depression
• Reductions in stress, anxiety and depression
• Boosted memory and improved concentration
• Improved medical outcomes
• Prevention of mental health conditions • Reduced effects of traumatic experiences From examinedexistence.com
• Improvements in flow and spontaneity, expression of grief, positive identity, and social networks From The American Journal of Public Health
Whether you are exercising your mind or body or both, you are clearly benefitting from very similar (and powerful) intrinsic outcomes. So, the next time you make some excuse for skipping yoga, don’t feel guilty. Just make art instead! Cheers,
Steve Galatro Executive Director

Work together as a group to design and assemble either a stainless steel garden trellis, chair, or sculpture using the tools and techniques associated with the metal inert gas (MIG) welding process. An extraordinary and collaborative experience for corporate groups, consider incorporating a company logo or other custom design for an additional fee.

Interview with
LisaZerkowitz BY HEATHER OLSON
Lisa Zerkowitz was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She attended the University of California at Santa Barbara, where she earned a BA in Studio Art, with an emphasis in printmaking. Upon graduating, she took a glassblowing course at Santa Barbara City College, something she had always wanted to try. The material was exciting, challenging and intriguing. Lisa continued her studies at Rhode Island School of Design, where she received a MA in Art Education while simultaneously completing the undergraduate program in glass. After graduate school she relocated to Seattle where she currently resides. She was deeply affected by the lush foliage of the Pacific Northwest and it’s contrast from her native Los Angeles. The new environment hugely influenced her work.

Initially Lisa embarked on a body of work based on childhood memory, creating pieces that she describes as landscapes through the eyes of a child. Today her work is nature inspired and combines the use of blown and cast glass, steel, ink and bronze. She has found a way to marry her background in printmaking with her passion for glass. Zerkowitz’s work takes her all over the United States, Canada and overseas for exhibitions, teaching opportunities and for visiting artist engagements. These travel opportunities allow her to be exposed to different cultures and experience the varied natural surroundings. She enjoys hiking and taking photographs of the outdoors during her travels, which allows her to come back to the studio with an abundance of ideas and excited to make new work. @PM: Tell me about your
process of incorporating pate’ de verre into your current glass art.
LZ: Being able to get more
detailed with color application has been a longstanding desire in my glasswork. Pate de Verre is painting with glass powders into a mold and then firing it in a kiln. This process involves applying layers of colored glass powder with water and a binding agent, using paintbrushes and a water dropper to build the powder into very specific areas of the mold. This technique now offers me the opportunity to really examine colors in nature and to have fun with color. @PM: Does childhood
memory continue to influence your work today? LZ: Currently I focus on the
present, what I love about life in this moment. And that is to be outside, surrounded by nature, which has become the ultimate influence in my work.

your greatest challenge in making art? LZ: Feeling overwhelmed
at the start of a new piece or project, or lacking the confidence needed to dive right in. You have to be confident when you stare at a slab of clay or chunk of wax – to know that once you start working with it you will be able to create what you intend. The other challenge for me is time. It’s nice to have a beautiful facility, but ultimately, it is the people - staff, students, independent users and supporters that make the place. I value the Pratt community – everyone who seeks to have creativity in their lives. I really love the hugely successful efforts that have been put forth in programming for youth, teens and seniors, as well as the opportunities Pratt offers those who most likely could not afford to have art a part of their lives. @PM: Seattle has an amaz-
ing array of glass art and glass artists. What inspires you about this community? LZ: The people inspire me.
It truly is a great group of individuals that are there for one another in good times and bad. Certainly it is great that we help one another with technical problems and share information and resources, but in times of sadness or joy, we know how to connect and be there for each other. I feel very fortunate to be a part of the glass community in Seattle because I think it really is a special thing. COURTESY OF BOYD SUGIKI

@PM: What words of wisdom and
advice would you give to a new student wanting to pursue glass art? LZ: Be prepared to work hard, have
patience and a positive outlook. Approach everything with rigor and honesty, by making things from the heart with passion and soul, to the best of your ability. Challenge yourself and take risks. Apply for competitions, shows, residencies and funding whenever you can. Be inspired by others, but find your own voice. Learn skills from as many people as you can, but always create unique work that you can call your own.
