Meet Julie. Julie is a practicing jewelry artist and one of Pratt’s many incredibly talented teaching artists. “Pratt is the first place I visited to teach before moving to Seattle. It has a presence across the country and it’s evidenced by the amount of people who love Pratt, continue to take courses and support its non-profit status. There are professionals working right alongside beginners, sharing ideas and connecting people to more people/artists and places to explore their creative endeavors.” When asked what keeps her coming back to Pratt, Julie credits the high level of student engagement. She describes the student breakthrough that she looks forward to in every class: “When they are having fun while learning something they never thought they could do and have that “a-ha!” moment. That pulls the heart strings.” We need your help to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to have that “a-ha!” moment. Your donation allows Pratt to: subsidize the cost of every class provide tuition assistance to those in need
advance the work of local artists through scholarships and access to facilities
offer free programs for youth and teens deliver our programs to underserved communities
Make a gift today at www.pratt.org and help us advance our mission to make art accessible to everyone. No gift is too small – every gift is meaningful. Thank you for your support! Cheers,
Steve Galatro Executive Director

SILVER FILIGREE IN OAXACA
FEBRUARY 11-18, 2017
with Rafael Bautista
The region now known has Oaxaca has a rich tradition of metal arts going back some 2500 years to the establishment of Monte Alban, one of Mesoamerica’s first cities. The production of lace-like metal filigree has flourished since colonial times, captivating viewers with its combination of fragility and strength: “For openwork filigree, jewelers require a minimum of metal: delicately twisted wires may make up less than half the surface; the rest is air.” Study abroad students will receive instruction on the traditional methods of Oaxacan-style filigree in the workshops of El Oro de Monte Alban, the city’s most prominent jewelry company. Our instructor Rafael Bautista has been creating filigree since the age of eighteen.

STUDY
MIXED MEDIA IN CHACALA
FEBRUARY 5-11, 2017
with Miguel Perez and Larry Calkins
Join Kamla Kakaria and Romson Bustillo for a weeklong printmaking intensive in Oaxaca, the printmaking capital of Mexico. Work with Mexican artist Enrique Flores and his assistants for five days to combine etchings with woodcuts to create uniquely layered prints in the tradition of Oaxaca. We will tour some of the many printmaking studios in the area and meet printmaking artists that reside in Oaxaca. Join Kamla Kakaria and Romson Bustillo for a week long mixed media printmaking intensive in Chacala, Mexico (one hour north of Puerto Vallarta). Work with Mexican artist Miguel Perez at his studio Grafica Chacala and our own Larry Calkins (www.calkinsart.com) to create works inspired by the environment of the beach and the jungle. We will visit and take rubbings from the petroglyphs at Alta Vista. This region was originally home to the largely unstudied (Tecoxquin) native culture dating from approximately 2000 BC to 2300 BCE. It contains 56 petroglyphs whose antiquity cannot be accurately determined.

It’s a big holiday and as the Latino community grows in the US, it is becoming an increasingly popular celebration here. We started creating installations for Day of the Dead at SAM 21 years ago, in 1995. We also do installations at El Centro de la Raza, Seattle Center, and six or seven other venues. We do this to share the Oaxacan tradition of Day of the Dead with other communities. We create sand paintings by spreading sand on the

We have incorporated contemporary images like skeletons, candles, flowers, and musical instruments into the sand paintings as well. We are very grateful to the Seattle Art Museum for giving us this space and for sharing this with the community. Every year we invite students and volunteers to help us with the installation because Day of the Dead is all about bringing people together. We did this at the Tacoma Art Museum for seven years as well.

1990, it was very hard. I had to figure out how to create relationships, and support myself as an artist. I now have 26 years experience as a full-time artist and it is still hard to

I believe I have a responsibility to help pave the way. I want to create more pathways between Seattle, Oaxaca and Japan.
