Your artist is inside.

I don’t know about you, but I could sure use some art therapy about now! I have great respect and admiration for the people who are standing together so passionately to make their voices heard in our starkly divided political landscape. The collective resonance is both inspiring and, if I’m being totally honest, a little overwhelming. The daily barrage of political messaging is unrelenting and difficult for me to process all at once. I find that I’m going about my everyday with an elevated stress level and a heightened emotional state. It is unsustainable and I know I need to release this pressure somehow. In times of great change and struggle, we often turn to art and artists to help us process. We depend on artists to reveal the world through a different lens, to show us ourselves in ways we could not imagine on our own. And through the process of making art we make similar discoveries, drawing out insights from within that we could not otherwise tap into. Art is a uniquely human experience. In that way, I guess it makes sense that we would turn to it when our humanity is tested. So that’s exactly what I’ll be doing: making art, seeing art, supporting artists. It’s just what I need right now. Perhaps you’ll join me? Cheers,

Steve Galatro, Executive Director

Masu Box Progression

Working in 3-D Stained Glass

March 18 – 20, 2017 10am – 4pm

March 22 – 26, 2017 9:30am – 5:30pm Learn painting, airbrushing and silkscreening on glass, as well as cutting, copper foiling and soldering to create one or more three dimensional glass forms.

The Masu box is one of the most basic (and awesome) units of origami, and can be morphed into a myriad of structures. We’ll start by making a selection of boxes, lids and inserts and then we’ll flatten the boxes and use them as sections in a 4-needle Coptic binding. Erin Sweeney lives and works in southern New Hampshire. She received her MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she was awarded the Elizabeth C. Roberts Prize for Graduate Book Arts. She also has a BFA in Sculpture from the Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine. Sweeney exhibits nationally, most recently at St. Anselm College, Manchester, NH, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Additionally, Sweeney is an instructor, teaching book arts workshops at her Lovely In The Home Press. She can also drive a backhoe, rake gravel for extended periods of time, and install septic pipe. Erin will give a special lecture on March 19 at 6:30pm in the Draw/Paint Studio. Learn more about Erin at www.erinsweeney.net

Pratt Artist 8

Interview with Wyly Astley, Youth Program Instructor by Heather Olson Wyly Astley is a youth instructor, and will teach several classes at Pratt this summer. From her bio: “While I have a survey understanding about the mechanics of natural systems, I remain captivated by the magic of it all. I find animal remnants and geological treasures particularly fascinating and good materials for storytelling. I also have great fondness for found hardware, cast-off lumber, metal, animal and plant fibers and wax. I find that these items possess dual intrinsic properties that tell stories about such things as loss, inconsistency, error, protection and concealment. ” When did you first become interested in making art? I think “making” and “art” were two separate things for me growing up. I’ve always been a maker. My earliest memories are of making my own pets, and I was very interested in dolls, doll clothes and designing environments for dolls also.

Pratt Artist 9

Facing page, top: Dr. Good, The Apothecary, detail

I didn’t know any “artists” as a very young person nor do I have memory of experiencing or seeing art then. At some point I came to believe that artists were sculptors and painters, and I did not make work like that. I started calling myself an artist about 10 years ago when I made a conscious, daily practice of making.

“I did believe, for a long time, that artists were magic, but now I know that artists are people who work very, very hard...”

How do you find ways to maintain the joys you discovered as a child—how do you stay captivated by the magic of making art? Good question. I think I know what you mean about “the magic”; however, I would not use the word “magic” anymore. I did believe, for a long time, that artists were magic, but now I know that artists are people who work very, very hard and sacrifice much to do their work and do so with great purpose. This discovery was important because it shifted my understanding about who artists are and what they do. Back to your question though—I think I am simply captivated by art, both in making and experiencing it. That just doesn’t waver.

What are the delights of working with kids? I have worked with kids in some fashion for nearly 40 years. In fact, I bought my first car with babysitting money. I love working with and being around young kids because they go-go-go. They are running, throwing, exploring, creating, failing and getting right back into whatever. Older kids spend their energy differently but they are just as immersed in whatever they’re up to. Because of my position (teacher/parent), I am often invisible even though I’m right in the mix. This affords me a front-row seat to process and what new discovery looks and feels like on a daily basis. This is invigorating and inspiring for me. Plus, I generally score a deep belly laugh at least once a day.

Portland, 2016

What are the unique challenges? The emotional aspect of trying and failing can be tough to work out. It’s a challenge to get what’s in your head out and into two or three dimensions. Kids (and grownups) often feel a lot of pressure to follow instructions and to make something visually appealing. The hardest part about teaching, for me, is to read individuals in an instant and try to extend engagement in a way that has real value for the kid. I hate losing someone to “I can’t”.

What will you be teaching at Pratt this summer? I am doing three one-week classes. We will be looking at art and learning about the artists who make what we’re seeing. We will try on some of these styles and subjects we see, and learn

Pratt Artist 10 how to take the elements we find in all the works and develop our own voice with the same kinds of materials the artists used.

What are you currently working on that you are excited about?

Another project I’m working on involves stitching on hundreds and hundreds of beads and sequins, which I love to do. This is a piece about gender - transgender to be exact. I am working with leather and fur for this piece and I am wrestling with that because these are materials I don’t necessarily feel good about using. They feel important for this piece, however.

[carrie] little farm, copper, reindeer moss, 2016

Where can we see your work? The installation part of The Apothecary is on the Amazon campus at South Lake Union. It’s in a window space in the Arizona building at John and Boren. And if you walk through Carkeek Park along Piper’s Creek near the orchard, you will find the vessels I’ve sewn into the trees. If people want to participate, I would love for them to check out the project at healeachother.net. They can then email me at healeachothernow@gmail. com with their stories of heartache. I will include the names given me in the scrolls, then I will post an image of the scrolls along with the names (real or pseudonyms) on the website under “scrolls”.

What advice would you give to a young person who wants to make art and to have a career as an artist? Don’t concern yourself too much about who gets to call themselves an artist. Just do what you do and do it with great love and devotion. Look for the teachers you need to guide you to your goals. You will find them. P H O T O BY M Y R A K A H A

I am engaged with an installation project called The Apothecary. Shunpike (a wonderful Seattle arts organization) invited me to show a previously staged outdoor performance-based installation as part of their Storefronts Project. I shifted the performance into a video installation and took the face-to-face aspect of the original work online. The essence of the piece remains - there is a shaman character named Dr. Good who helps people with broken heart type injuries. People can email Dr. Good their stories of heartbreak, for themselves or others, and she takes their names and sews them up into little vessels along with poems and images and then sews the vessels into trees along Piper’s Creek in Carkeek Park. I, of course, am Dr. Good. This piece has been up since mid-November and I had no idea we’d be in the political climate we are in now. This work has been very cathartic. It’s helping me feel engaged in a small but significant way. It helps me feel grounded and connected. I will miss the work when it closes in March.

Tuition Assistance 27

2017 Tuition Assistance Guidelines We are committed to making our classes available to everyone by offering scholarships and tuition assistance. A dedicated amount of financial assistance is available each year to adults, youth, and teens that otherwise cannot afford to participate in Pratt classes or workshops.

For full information and to apply, please go to our website at

pratt.org/tuitionassistance.

Tuition Assistance Program Pratt’s mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Pratt raises funds to subsidize the cost of participation and maintain the lowest possible fees for its programs. And yet, there are many who still cannot afford to participate. The Tuition Assistance (TA) program aims to provide a deeper subsidy to those who would not otherwise be able to participate due to financial limitations. Tuition Assistance is applied as a 75% discount on the class fee for a class of the applicant’s choice. TA does not cover supply fees. Applicants are responsible to pay the remaining balance of the class fee as well as any supply fee associated with their chosen class.

Eligibility Those whose household income falls at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines (shown below) are eligible for Tuition Assistance. If your household income is the same or less than the amount in the following chart, you are eligible for Tuition Assistance at Pratt Fine Arts Center. * Household Size: this number includes the applicant, any other individuals who share financial responsibility for the household, and all dependents ** Household Income: the combined gross income generated each year by all household members, as reported on IRS annual income tax forms
