Your artist is inside.
Summertime and the livin’ is easy… There is nothing quite like Seattle in the summer. While most of the country is planning trips to destinations far from home, we are far more likely to stick around. We awaken from a deep winter slumber to find the treasures of the northwest super-charged by the sun and there’s nowhere else we’d rather be. The energy is infectious. We embrace a go-go-go attitude, determined to make the most of each beautiful day. We pack our schedules with barbecues and bonfires, camping and concerts, ferries and festivals. Sun-kissed and smiling, we enjoy. Inspiration is all around us during this magical time as we see the world with fresh eyes and new light. These are the best possible conditions for experiencing art. So let’s do it! Let’s make a commitment to making art a key part of our season-long staycation. However we choose to experience it—see it, buy it, or make it ourselves—art will amplify our summer to next level greatness! Cheers,
Steve Galatro, Executive Director

Pratt Artist 10
Interview with Sharrey DorĂŠ by Heather Olson Construction, problem solving and ultimately creating a piece of art are what inspire me. My love of texture and form has influenced my work over years. Patterns, layering of metals, colors, and the beauty of precious and semi-precious stones are the driving elements to my work. For years I had created needle art, designing and hand painting canvases. It was through this process that I discovered my love of textiles, texture and color. It was by pure adventure that I also discovered my love of metal. I did not realize it at the time but my journey to become a metal smith began when I started making beaded jewelry. I started constructing my own findings for my pieces. I was intrigued by the process of fabricating the elements of the piece and the design challenges that presented themselves for each piece. One piece led to another and thus I was destined to continue my journey. My work reflects my constant quest in discovering and learning new techniques, yet stays true to the nature of what inspires me most: the stones and metal that mother nature provides, texture, pattern, form, and color.
When did you first begin making jewelry? My mom turned me on to beading, which I did for a while, and then I wanted to make my own findings so I had to learn new skills. I took classes
at Pratt from Frances Baker around 1997, and then I took a class from Virginia Causey, and I was truly hooked. I started taking jewelry fabrication classes at North Seattle Community College from Lynn Hull in 2000. Dana of Danaca Designs taught there as
Pratt Artist 11
well. I was working for a graphic design placement company then, and I learned from the artists how to put a portfolio together. I’m not classically trained in the arts so I have learned a lot from others and from workshops and fabrication classes. My first oneon-one workshop was with Marilyn Nicholson in Taos, New Mexico. I spent two amazing weeks with her. I’m very passionate about my art and I keep learning all the time. I could never afford the jewelry that I liked, so I wanted to make my own.
What kinds of projects do you most enjoy creating? I really enjoy making neckpieces, because they have evolved so much. I love the process of making the centerpiece and designing the chain to complement it. The mechanics of the pieces are interesting to me—it has to be well-engineered in addition to looking good. I have enjoyed making rings recently. I was apprehensive about them at first because they either fit or they don’t and when you are making a sale, if there is an obstacle there, it can be tough to overcome. I like earrings the least because you have to make two of them. I don’t like matchy-matchy things. I want the earrings to be unique and I want the work to flow so you can mix and match pieces. I like to mix metals and stones in my work.
“I am a very hands-on teacher. I learn as much from my students as I hope they learn from me. It’s a give-give situation where we problem solve together.” in an era where we were taught to get an education and go for a corporate job. I didn’t know there were African-American jewelry artists. When I started doing this, I would go online and I knew I couldn’t be the only one, but there were very few. Art Smith was unique in his gift and opportunity to be recognized for his talent. Most jewelry before that time reflected a more traditional European style and that was what was considered “acceptable.” Wolfgang Vaatz is another jewelry artist that is an inspiration. His technique and design is breathtaking. I am drawn to texture and color. When I see color, shape and definition, I love it. The stones I use in my work are blue, orange, purple, green, yellow, like yummy jellybeans. Last but not least is my friend and mentor Virginia Causey. She is an inspiration and always makes me feel like I can do new things. I’m not good at tooting my own horn. I tinker in my own studio. I’m not much of a joiner, I just like doing my thing, and I am passionate about my work and growth.
What things and people inspire you?
What do you most enjoy about teaching?
Other jewelers of course—I like to see their problem solving and techniques. One major influence was Eleanor Moty. She is a sculptor using captured settings, worked with tabs, hidden and visible prongs. Her partnership with Tom Munsteiner and other lapidary artists is so inspiring, and amazing. Art Smith is another inspiration. When I was a kid, I never imagined being an artist, and definitely not a jewelry artist. I grew up
I love the one-on-one interactions. I am a very hands-on teacher. I learn as much from my students as I hope they learn from me. It’s a give-give situation where we problem solve together. Sometimes students’ ambitions are way past their skill level. We figure out how to get from point A to point B in class. I don’t want them to stifle their talent. The interaction is a real gift. If I can encourage my students to learn several
Pratt Artist 12
techniques and get really good at those, they can branch out and learn more. I encourage them to take photos as they work so they can look back and keep practicing. I’m always learning as well. It’s a real joy. I never thought I’d be good at teaching, but the students keep coming back, so I must be okay.
What kinds of things are important to know for students who want to make jewelry, and who may want to pursue careers as artists? Patience. Practice, practice, practice and more practice. You can do production but it’s a different world today. I don’t do production work, but if you want to, you have to market yourself and your work. Use social media to find fabricators or people who will cast the work. Fabrication of the original and knowledge what one wants the piece to look like are critical. Should you decide go on the road, it’s hard. It’s highly competitive. It can be very satisfying to find your market, but you have to build it. Find shows that will support your price point. I put as much work into the $125 earrings as the $1000 earrings. If another jeweler picks up your work they will look closely, and you want it stand up to a critical eye. Have integrity about your work. Be the best you can be. If you really love it, you can do it. It’s hard, but if it’s your passion, that’s okay.
What is your dream project? I would love to work with more gold. I’d like to take an intensive one-on-one with a master goldsmith or silversmith. There is a master silversmith by the name of Albion Smith. He resides northern California, Albion makes goblets, jewelry and containers. His
work is very old-school—like Russian and European fabrication. My goal is to spend a few months working with him. You can’t gather all that information at once; you have to work and practice. He has a lifetime of knowledge. His hands don’t work as well as they used to so I’d like to work with him before he can’t do it anymore.
Where can we see your work this summer? I’ll be at the Bellevue Festival of the Arts, Art in the Pearl in Portland, Oregon, and I’m waiting to hear about Sun Valley. I’m not currently showing work in galleries. Making work for shows and commissions keeps be very busy. I could do more shows but I don’t want to be on the road all the time. My husband is my roadie so he travels with me. The buying public has changed. Much more is purchased online rather than in person at shows. Some artists mass-produce, or cast many of their pieces. I hand fabricate all of my work, so they are one–of-a-kind pieces.

Tuition Assistance 27
2018 Guidelines for Tuition Assistance We are committed to making our classes available to everyone by offering scholarships and tuition assistance. A dedicated amount of financial assistance is available each year to adults, youth, and teens that otherwise cannot afford to participate in Pratt classes or workshops.
For full information and to apply, please go to our website at
pratt.org/tuitionassistance.
Tuition Assistance Program Pratt’s mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Pratt raises funds to subsidize the cost of participation and maintain the lowest possible fees for its programs. And yet, there are many who still cannot afford to participate. The Tuition Assistance (TA) program aims to provide a deeper subsidy to those who would not otherwise be able to participate due to financial limitations. Tuition Assistance is applied as a 75% discount on the class fee for a class of the applicant’s choice. TA does not cover supply fees. Applicants are responsible to pay the remaining balance of the class fee as well as any supply fee associated with their chosen class.
The next Tuition Assistance deadlines are: Application period:
For classes that start between:
Apr 16 - Apr 26 Jun 4 - Jun 14

Applications may be dropped off at Pratt’s front desk, emailed to info@pratt.org or mailed to: 1902 South Main Street, Seattle, WA 98144 Attn: Tuition Assistance.
