Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand. — ALBERT EINSTEIN A good friend recently shared this quote with me and I was immediately taken with it. It reminds me that I don’t have all the answers, that there is always more to explore. A little imagination can go a long way. Children know this. But as adults, we tend to forget. We can become complacent, somehow satisfied with all that we know and in turn, ignoring the possibility of new discovery. Art can remind us. Art can revive our innate spirit of wonder and lead to positive outcomes in all aspects of our daily lives. It encourages us to unburden from the conclusions that we’ve been conditioned to draw and embrace the awe of infinite discoveries. We see this every day at Pratt. Through the making of art, imagination is ignited and students learn things about themselves and the world that they previously never thought to explore. Smart man, that Einstein. Cheers,
Steve Galatro, Executive Director

Pratt Artist 9
Interview with Jamie Randall by Heather Olson Jamie Randall is an emerging artist who pursues new and experimental directions in glass art. She earned a BFA in Glassblowing from the Appalachian Center for Craft and has been based in Seattle since 2008. Jamie received the 2016 Jon and Mary Shirley Scholarship in Glass from Pratt Fine Arts Center. This scholarship is awarded to artists who demonstrate exceptional promise in the medium and whose past work and exhibition activities show strong potential and dedication to the glass arts. Through this scholarship, Jamie is experimenting with glass casting texture that focuses on the precision of small details. You are a recipient of the Jon and Mary Shirley Scholarship in Glass. Tell me about that and how your time at Pratt has influenced or helped your art making. I moved to Seattle for the second time with the intent of focusing on my work rather than putting most of my energy into assisting my mentors
(which is a great experience and something I still do, but my focus is split now). Pratt gave me the access to develop my casting skills without owning much, but more than that the advice and encouragement from the relationships I’ve made have helped me the most. Knowing that people believe in what I’m doing and watching them so willingly pitch in knowledge, time,
Pratt Artist 10 supplies, and funding through the Shirley Scholarship has encouraged me more than anything. I want to make my ideas a reality when I see that people are interested. Talking through my ideas with other craftsmen coming to Pratt to make their work feels like grad school. I have more meaningful conversations in passing sometimes than in my intended conversations.
When did you start making art? My family lives in a lake house in the country where I used to spend all my childhood time at the dock. In between ski sessions I would make little boats and set them free on the water. I especially liked when my dad would put gas in the boat and little bits would spill, making color patterns reflecting in the light on the water. I started thinking seriously about art as a career when I was in high school, working with ceramics.
Do you still work in ceramics or are you focused exclusively on glass? I am not currently working with ceramics, but I know what I would start with if I picked it up again. I would like to make a picnic set, where everything is handmade. My grandmother wove elaborate baskets so I have one of those waiting for me. I’m quilting the blanket with glow-in-
the-dark embroidery thread depicting constellations in a stitch and bitch with friends. I’m casting the forks and spoons in silver in a jewelry centrifuge casting class next month in a vintage style with monograms on the handles. I’d like to throw the porcelain plates and learn screen printing on them, and I want to blow the cups out of glass and dip the bottom halves of them in silicone to protect them. I’d weave napkins on a loom, casting little bronze bugs as part of this also. I’m fascinated with insects because of how they are anatomically evolved to problem solve; some are almost architectural wonders. This dream of mine would require trying a lot of new crafts. It’s kind of a bucket list of objects I would like to make as excuses to try new mediums. When I think about finding work/life balance and happiness, making art comes into that too.
Describe your dream project—big, pie-in-the-sky, no limitations. I have an idea to do an installation in an airport with large panels, using an Arduino or Raspberry Pi which is a robotics format to build on. I want to create a pulley system on three axes and hang the panels on two or three motion sensors. As a person walks up to one motion sensor, the imagery on the panels move for that one person. The imagery if one sensor is tripped would show feelings of independence. If two people walk up the panels would move, overlapping and composing to reflect a relationship. If all three sensors are tripped, the imagery would be about community. I haven’t quite worked out the imagery yet, and I would need to outsource an electronics consultant and maybe get grant funding. I want it to be in an airport so I can reach people outside the art community, and I like the idea of focusing on different kinds of relationships because it’s something objective.
Pratt Artist 11
What are you currently working on that you are excited about? I have three projects in the works and two others I’m thinking about starting soon. The first is a mother and baby whale snuggling. They have little remoras across their mouths. It’s about the sacrifices that people—and especially artists—make in order to have a baby. I picked the humpback whale because after they have their calves, the mothers don’t eat and all their resources go to the babies while they migrate from Mexico or Hawaii to Alaska. My big casting project for the year is a hare with long ears and I’m asking Carol Milne to come in and do a one-onone class with me on how to improve or expand my handbills casting. I want to slice the original sculpture into different sections and cast it in different colors, coldwork it, and put it back together, so it will be like a rainbow. I’m sure others have done this with sculpture, but I haven’t seen it so I’m giving it a go. The last on-going big project I’m working on is a collaboration with Mark Clarson making wine decanters with extinct bird heads as the decanter
tops. Mark is designing them and I’m engraving the surface in patterns Mark and I design together. Austin Stern has been killing it as our gaffer, successfully blowing and hot sculpting anything we ask. Each one takes so long to make. This series of five decanters won’t be finished for quite some time, but I’m documenting my processes and my experience with the scholarship on my Instagram and if anyone wants to follow it’s @jamie.randall. Another new piece I am starting in May in the centrifuge class is a dissected frog with its guts in metal, and the frog made from glass, in a bell jar with the base and top in green accents. I have already sculpted the guts. This is mostly an expression of craft for me, learning inclusions, but there is also a show at Ghost Gallery every year called Bell Jar, and I’ve always wanted to do it. I haven’t known until now what I wanted to make.
Where can we see your work? I’m showing at Vetri Glass here in Seattle.
What words of wisdom would you like to share with young artists who want to work in glass? I’d say don’t think about what people want to buy. Make what you want to make. If you love it, part of you will go into it and it becomes a more natural and mature piece of art. People want to collect you as a person, not just the object. Your art is your story. I don’t always know the story when I start making things.
