Art is a human service. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Too often we think of art as extra. It falls into the category of leisure or entertainment. But if we expand our thinking and view art as an integral part of the human experience, we begin to see the power it holds to be positive influence on all aspects of our lives. And if we believe that art engagement makes for healthier humans, couldn’t it also be part of the solution to the problems of our time?

PRATT FINE ARTS CENTER
Youth & Teen Classes Youth Art Works: Weekend Classes Pay-What-You-Can Weekend classes run fall, winter and spring during the school year on Saturdays and Sundays. Pratt offers experiential 8 week art classes for youth ages 5 – 13 where students explore self-expression through painting, drawing, sculpture and other media as they delve into the elements and vocabulary of art. This Fall’s theme is “Animals.” The pay-what-you-can model depends on your donations and support to ensure our sustainability. Pratt provides suggested donation amounts for selected classes with the goal of “paying it forward” and assisting those who struggle with providing affordable art experiences to their children. If you’d like to pay an amount that's not listed, please contact mkaha@pratt.org. Register in person at the front desk starting July 31, 2018. CLASS

2017–18 Edwin T. Pratt Scholarship Winners Our recipients of the 2017–18 Edwin T. Pratt Scholarship did some amazing things over the past year! The Edwin T. Pratt Scholarship aims to amplify the work of underrepresented artists of color and equip them with education and tools that will help them progress to the next level in their professional journeys. My sincere appreciation goes out to the Edwin T. Pratt Scholarship! It has given me the opportunity to experiment, fail, and be prolific throughout the scholarship year. The support that I received from the staff members has been tremendous while my project required some special arrangements in the hot shop and the kiln studio. My scholarship proposal was to create a series of new work that involves using uranium glass. It is a part of my ongoing project that is a result of marrying my love of my home country of Japan and its cultural heritage with my concerns over the Fukushima nuclear disaster and Hanford nuclear waste management. I’m happy to report that the artwork that I’ve produced at Pratt was exhibited in Seattle this spring and will start traveling to four more venues beyond Seattle this fall.
Classes at Pratt, through the Edwin T. Pratt Scholarship, have been very engaging and have opened me up to new ways of design and thought. My work is in a constant state of shift, and so I look forward to seeing how a year’s worth of learning new skills will affect my art practice. In the last year, I created a mylar stage installation for an evening-length dance piece on the ephemerality of dance, a camouflage net made of kimono fabric for the Seattle Center Sculpture Walk as a response to the 75th Anniversary of Executive Order 9066 and the tens of thousands of camouflage nets made by incarcerated Japanese-Americans for the US Army, and a window installation of 30 Perler Fusible Bead abstractions mounted in acrylic boxes, as well as a solo gallery show featuring the abstractions and new paintings.
